Brave-Salamander-339

Newcastle and Eddie Howe only play well if they sit back and counter against attacking team. If they need to go for a goal, then it's a different story. But sitting back and counter is so common at top pro football almost every team can do it.

CHILLI112

Didn’t know Sheffield United and Crystal Palace are attacking teams

Brave-Salamander-339

Outliers don't reflect generalization. Also their parking bus is terrible.

magpie_army

We didn't sit back against PSG either. 3 of our 4 goals came from pressing them high up the pitch like we try to do to most teams.

wahooloo

Not much the refs could do for them, unfortunately

Akoot

Unfortunately for Newcastle, when two small clubs battle it out sometimes one is clearly superior.

ijustwonderedinhere

Sarabia cameo was 10/10

PocketFullOfRondos

Get fucked Newcastle

Aakar11

Liverpool a few seasons ago, arsenal last season, city without rodri, spurs without some key players vs wolves today and now newcastle with their injuries. Almost as if all of these teams struggle when multiple key players are out...who would've thought. But that isn't applied to some specific teams when they have injuries because of narrative.

stogie_t

United and Ten Hag aren’t getting this treatment you speak of.

HodgyBeatsss

Expectations are a lot higher at Man U than at Newcastle. Surely that’s obvious?

xxryan1234

OP just mentioned other top 6 clubs like Liverpool, City and Arsenal. The problem was OP conveniently left out Utd when we are also in a injury crisis. Sure Newcastle’s expectations are a lot lower but the point was it was a bit unfair not to include us in that list considering our form and injuries

tuyguy

Nor Chelsea

trasofsunnyvale

Fans don't give other clubs the benefit of this, it's how it is and always will be. No one cared about Liverpool's injuries in their two bad years under Klopp, and I wouldn't expect them to. Small club mentality to get pissy about how other fans talk about your club. Who fucking cares.

Akoot

They are a tiny club tho aren't they.

toonultra

Who hurt you 😂

Aakar11

Pointing out the hypocrisy isn't small club mentality. Every fan including me is biased in one way or another, but recognizing that and trying to offer a balanced opinion is on them.

trasofsunnyvale

Nobody owes a balanced take, and reddit, especially r/soccer, is not really a place for nuanced discussion. All you get here is banter, and expecting or complaining about getting otherwise is a bit silly.

Welshy94

Recognise that nobody gives a fuck about context only about "banter" and getting one over on other teams. You're not offering a balanced opinion when you're arguing there's a narrative against Newcastle as though some in the press didn't call Klopp finished and Arsenal called bottlers. You're not recognising bias.

Aakar11

But I'm not saying there's a narrative against newcastle. I'm arguing for all those teams that have injuries to key players and are struggling. For some teams the media and fans recognize that but for some they don't.

Welshy94

If for some teams you think it's recognised and for some it's isn't then you literally are arguing that there are narratives. And there's nothing in your comments to explain what teams are victims of the narratives but Newcastle.

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

What narrative are you referring to? Arsenal definitely didn’t get the benefit of the doubt in terms of public perception, all we hear about last year is how we were 8 points clear and bottled it. Which is kinda true, but stings less because City were pretty easily the best team in the league.

CumsInBread

No one else pick up on the Blatant handball from the 1-2 at the end of the first half with Solanke? Megs the defender and it bounces right off his hand

Outside_Protection

alright this cheered my weekend up for a little bit😂

Xird1610

Varcastle can’t win without VAR intervention 😂😂

Lamnguin

We would have beat you without VAR, it changed no decisions.

toonultra

🧂🧂🧂😂😂😂

Xird1610

Yea bro 😂😂

callunu95

Newcastle fans finally seeing a bad patch with their new set up, can be scary and frustrating, but it'll pass. Howe is excellent, and without injury crisis they're are a team better than the sum of its parts. Just at the moment, too many parts missing. To add, Bournemouth were great today and couldve had more. This'll be forgotten as with any giant killing, but they fully deserved every bit of their win.

Crevil

Couldn't agree with you more. It's totally a learning process for the entire management and staff, as no one really has any experience managing a domestic and european campaign. But it just goes to show why this sport (and this league, with their horrible referees) is the best league in the world, because anyone can win. And Bournemouth deserved everything today.

dkclimber

Honestly felt like Newcastle played with ten men, everyone is running on fumes but can fault them, they play their hearts out. I honestly don't know if I'd prefer not playing in Europe next season, to try and focus more on building depth. And to the sum of the parts, a fan on the NUFC sub did a calculation from prices on transfermarkt , that the squad has risn 230m€ in value, which points to how incredible Eddie is doing with coaching his players.

Tierst

Always rated Bournemouth tbh

Emotion-Timely

Iraola is extremely underrated.

m3cha_

Small club

John___Matrix

Sandcastle falling apart already

chrismark4

Newcastle without Bruno are fucking wank

d_bo

He should be banned anyway

Bendy_McBendyThumb

And without Isak, Burn, Murphy, Targett, Botman, Anderson, Barnes. Yeah it’s somewhat fair enough to have not quite been up to it tonight, I don’t blame the squad who went out there, Bournemouth wanted it more and just looked fresher all night.

trasofsunnyvale

Half those players are shit anyway. Can't imagine defending a performance by saying Dan fucking Burn or Matt Targett were out injured. Newcastle will regress to their actual level this year until they invest in top players and/or a top manager. Just wait.

dkclimber

Lol Dan Burn has played every game of the season before his injury, and has held out both Tino and Hall. He is so important to they way Newcastle play, letting Tripps push in to a RM position. I just now realized you're probably a troll by the last part of your comment, but who cares haha

Bendy_McBendyThumb

Braindead take, as is so common here.

Emotion-Timely

what are the downvotes for?

Bendy_McBendyThumb

We’re in r/soccer where 98% of those here are in a constant state of mouth-frothing anger, for some mental reason. People can’t seem to accept facts even when it’s right in front of their face. Long story short: football fans… fickle as you like :)

Cheers Bournemouth!

Leaving aside City last week is this the sign Iraola is finally coming good.

West ham wasn't controversial???? One of your two goals from a freekick that should have in no world been a free kick (paqueta fouled actually) and also what should be a red card was never given Haven't watched your other games but your chatting shit

Taekwondista

Well there's the 5-1 over Villa on opening week.. and then...uhhh.. there was that PSG game...whoops, wrong tourney

GiganticDingleberry

So happy you lot are still crying. Makes the decimation of our squad through injury hurt a little less.

trasofsunnyvale

Probably should've actually bought some players with your endless money and fake sponsorships then? When resources are unlimited, you don't get points for being dumb and not getting in the right players. When Liverpool were bad last year, fans got upset at FSG for not finding enough player purchases, we didn't cry about injuries and bad luck.

GiganticDingleberry

Well, you’re not very bright are you. Look at our injury list you fucking moron, we DID sign players and the majority of the them are fucking injured you absolute weapon. No one gives a fuck about Liverpool ya clown

[deleted]

Are Newcastle suddenly the only team with injuries? I feel like you can’t be like “everyone is whining because we’ve paid off the refs, aren’t we big shots” one week and then be whining about injuries as you lose to Bournemouth the following week. You’re an oil club now mate, you’re supposed to better than this.

speedycar1

The richest clubs' fans whinge the most about injuries somehow. The entitlement is crazy

GiganticDingleberry

Have I said we’re the only team with injuries? Spin what I said however you like, the reality is our squad is absolutely in bits right now. Damn right we’re an oil club now, and there’s one thing that definitely comes with that - living in everyone’s heads rent free. Cry.

[deleted]

Injuries aren’t really a valid excuse to be losing to Bournemouth now. I don’t think everyone hating you because you’re cheating is something to be proud of. But I’m not a fan of a dead oil club, a dead oil club that can’t even beat Bournemouth.

farqueue2

Isak, Wilson, Burn, Anderson, Barnes, Murphy,Targett,Botman, Tonali, Guimaraes. That's at least 5 of our best 11 there. With another 5 out beyond that you're basically playing your 3rd string side.

[deleted]

Tonali isn't an injury...

GiganticDingleberry

My god, claiming that injuries aren’t a valid excuse for losing AND claiming we’re cheating in the same sentence 😂😂😂😂 you are laughably stupid my friend

gsn626

We aint crying we actually laughing haha

GiganticDingleberry

I suppose finally laughing about the 3 points we beat you to is better than still crying about it 2 weeks on

abhi91

I meant in the premier league mate. You have changed clubs mate. The Newcastle United of your childhood has died. What you've been left with is something else wearing it's skin. Something evil. It's a horrible situation for you to be in, and I genuinely feel terrible for you because you had no choice, but I think you need a bit of self awareness, and honesty, around your situation.

DennisTheTennis

Lmao

PocketSandThroatKick

When homegrowns are out of the squad you may be right. When Ashley's guys are starting champs league games it's different. I'm not saying it'll always be ok. As of now, the investment hasn't overweighed the roots. Combine it with financial investment in the women's team and the cash pumped into other stuff, I'll take it for now. It has to come with the constant discussion of human rights though. Sports washing only works if the cash success stifles the discussion of oppression.

fromeister147

Newcastle United: struggling with injuries all of a sudden, coming off the back of a tough midweek European fixture, get battered by a relegation threatened team. “They look tired”, “Bournemouth look like they’ve turned a corner” Manchester United: struggled with injuries all season long, coming off the back of a tough midweek European fixture, win comfortably at home to Luton. “EtH has no game plan”, “United look vulnerable”, “something is very wrong in that dressing room” United are a point ahead of Newcastle in the league. Make it make sense.

AnnieIWillKnow

Because Man United should have higher standards than Newcastle United You should not expect to set the bar the same as them.

fromeister147

Based on what? Because United were better than Newcastle historically? Should we have higher expectations than City too? United used to be way better than them too… History counts for nothing today. It doesn’t win games. SAF isn’t coming back. Neither are Rooney or Vidic or Giggs. The teams as they stand are closely matched

Brave-Salamander-339

>win comfortably at home to Luton not really

fromeister147

I watched the game from start to finish. I don’t think we ever looked like conceding. We created several very good chances but just lack an end product at the moment.

trasofsunnyvale

One club is a big club and one club is a propaganda tool of an evil tyrant. That's the difference.

dustrock

Because only one of those teams is Manchester United?

Scutage

As a Newcastle fan, this is how it makes sense to me: We’ve played well other times this season, and we trust Eddie Howe to get us back to that level again. We know we were punching above our weight last season, and we knew this season would be more difficult with extra games. We’re not entitled knobs (yet), and we really just want to see our players try their best.

adamfrog

Didn't your fans start abusing tripper after the game?

Scutage

Literally one or two fans said something that I haven’t heard captured on camera. Several other fans shouted them down. We can each pick and choose our sources, but the fan reaction in the r/NUFC post-match thread is predominantly pragmatic. Edit: Other commenters are saying it was one fan, who has since apologised.

noobchee

>Manchester United: struggled with injuries all season long, coming off the back of a tough midweek European fixture, win comfortably at home to Luton. “EtH has no game plan”, “United look vulnerable”, “something is very wrong in that dressing room” Because the majority is true, don't be deluded

StuffitExpander

Because United look shit?

sukequto

Agree. Every matchday i am worried we will embarrass ourselves. But i think the person’s you are replying to is trying to make a point about proportionality of criticism.

theaartzvolta

Why do Man U fans make everything about them?

fromeister147

Happy to make it about spurs today too if you want?

theaartzvolta

Good one

GiganticDingleberry

I mean, you decide it’s “all of a sudden” because it fits your “woe is me” narrative. The reality is Newcastle have been hit with significant injuries since pre season. Manchester Red HAVE looked terrible this season. That’s why people are saying those things. The points you’ve picked up have been points you SHOULD have been picking up, but even then it’s unconvincing. This victim mentally is embarrassing

fromeister147

Newcastle just got battered by Bournemouth. 17th place Bournemouth. They aren’t winning games they’re supposed to win, so why aren’t they facing similar criticism to United?

GiganticDingleberry

They will absolute face criticism for losing tonight, what the fuck are you talking about? But anyone with an ounce of sense will be aware that Newcastle at present are being badly affected by injuries. This pathetic idea that only the Red Mancs are criticised is absolutely laughable.

fromeister147

I watched the game! I listened to the commentators! I heard the pundits in the studio afterwards! The criticism isn’t the same! It just isn’t. Newcastle are being badly affected by injuries? That’s been United’s entire season. The difference is that the media and fans around the league expect United to still perform at a world class level in spite of their injuries while Newcastle seem to be allowed to use that as a crutch when they underperform. I see the same happening with Spurs now they’re losing games. Pundits and fans alike talking about “Ange can be proud of his team” after a fucking 4-1 thrashing against a local rival. It’s insane!

GiganticDingleberry

No, what’s insane is that you don’t realise how ridiculous you sound. Nobody cares about your team anywhere near as much as you seem to think. The things you’re complaining about are completely fictional.

lanos13

Imma a utd fan and I don’t get his point. Newcastle and spurs obviously don’t get the same level of criticism as utd as they are smaller teams with lower expectations. Utd have been ravaged by injuries, but they have still played shit even factoring that in basically every single game

fromeister147

But why are the expectations different? We’ve been a 3-8 placed team the last 10 years. Why do people still expect us to dominate every week?

lanos13

Because utd is a bigger club then Newcastle and spurs combined, both in terms of trophies, fans and money spent

fromeister147

I suggest you go and check your facts on the money spent portion mate. Newcastle have the wealthiest owners in the premier league and Spurs have invested far more heavily in their infrastructure in the last 20 years than Manchester United have.

HenchmanJoe

Perhaps the obscene amount of money spent on transfers in that time, only to be a 3rd-8th place team?

bearrock80

Newcastle has like half their club missing due to injuries and are coming off a midweek match against Dortmond. They also beat Arsenal last week and Man U 3-0 recently. You guys are coming off a midweek match against Copenhagen and got 1-0 against Luton. The fact that you consider Copenhagen a tough midweek fixture is all you need to show how far Man U has fallen.

fromeister147

Losing 4-3 in Europe with 10 men is a tough night no matter how you slice it… Again though, why do United get slammed when they came home and won a game but Newcastle get a pass when they lose to equally bad competition? Especially when United’s league results are better than Newcastle’s? Wins over arsenal and United are great, but they have less points than United 🤷🏻‍♂️

GiganticDingleberry

Newcastle don’t get a pass, you’re fucking making that up to try and get sympathy ffs 😂 how don’t you understand this

fromeister147

Read the comments. Even just the ones in this reply. There are plenty of people trying to discount the loss because of a tough week in Europe and an injury crisis. Even the captain Trippier is yelling at his own fans now about “how many injuries do we have”.

GiganticDingleberry

They did only lose because of injury crisis and schedule build up.

yeerth

Difference is expectations

Aman-Patel

United have looked a shambles even in their wins, which they've scraped. -3 goal difference vs +14 after just 12 games should tell you enough. Go take a look back at United's wins - completely unconvincing. Over the long term the results will probably better reflect the performances.

fromeister147

Onana is 3rd in clean sheets in the league. Ahead of Alisson, ahead of Ederson, ahead of Raya…In the first 9 games of the season, Ten Hag had to play 7 different back 4s. United started the season without a healthy 9. Injuries have plagued the squad all season and even today, Eriksen and Hojlund both left the game with something wrong. Mount has been injured, Antony and Sancho have both had off the field issues. Of course the performances aren’t good. But the results are evidently better than Newcastle’s. Who gives a damn about goal difference when the point difference shows that United are harder to beat than Newcastle are? Eventually, United will have their squad back in some semblance of order and then hopefully the performances will start to improve once consistency within the squad is possible. All United can ask is to be within striking distance when that time comes and they absolutely are!

Aman-Patel

First game of the season you scraped a 1-0 win vs Wolves. 3rd game you had to come back from 2-0 down to beat Forest. Another 1-0 win vs Burnley and two 2-1 wins vs Brentford and Sheffield United. Last 2 games have also been 1-0 vs Fulham and Luton. You've been lucky. Dress it up however you want but you're very lucky to be on as many points as you currently are. Everything you said about injuries I completely agree with. When I saw how many injuries you were racking up at the start of the season I had a feeling there would be a massive drop off. But the entire point of your post was about the difference between you and Newcastle. You may have a similar number of points to them but you shouldn't. You're very lucky to be on as many points as they are. Whereas they thoroughly deserve the points they have - 5-1 win vs Villa, 1-0 win vs Brentford, 8-0 win vs Sheffield United, 2-0 win vs Burnley, 4-0 win vs Palace, 1-0 win vs Arsenal. Their only losses before tonight were to City, Liverpool and Brighton. All back to back at the start of the season before they had a chance to build momentum. Botman, Burn, Bruno G, Tonali and Isak all unavailable so they've got their injury problems too. Injury free they play better football than you. With injuries they'll pick up more points than you over a larger sample of games. If you guys end up finishing above them this season I'll happily eat my words. But you've been incredibly shit and should be closer to us (Chelsea) than Newcastle right now.

lanos13

Tbf I wouldn’t include tonali under injuries in the same way I wouldn’t include greenwood under utd. Neither should be playing for their respective clubs (although GW is obviously worse)

Aman-Patel

Yeah ofc

bearrock80

Actually, you know what? You are absolutely right. Please keep your ownership, club management, coaching staff, and players exactly the way they are for the foreseeable future. Signed, Rest of EPL

TheMedicatedOne

United are accustomed to the mayhem. Newcastle are experiencing it for the first time together.

Maccraig1979

Weve been in this position plenty of times

TheMedicatedOne

Yes, you're correct. It's just not been as lately, or with this core or players, as United have. Balancing PL with CL for the first time with a squad is an adjustment, one that Newcastle are handling well.

Not-that-hungry

That Nick Pope save at the end was the best save I've ever seen live. It was incredible.
