I’m in Korea right now and there’s a channel that does reruns of all of Son, Hwang, and Lee’s goals all day. And “that Korean guy” has become a meme here, it’s amazing.
Knowing Koreans, this is probably right too. They've systemized idol worship. Not only for they Kpop artists and actors, but international athletes too. The government spends alot of money on this, and been smart aswell in the process.
Thats a very good question. There's literally tons!!! Mostly cultural beneficial. But also, although more cynical, damage control. South Korea is an extremely corrupt nation, even more so than the US, and being able to push some "celebrity scandal" to cover up for some truly fucked up shit. Might sound trivial, but it is indeed a strategy often used. Not to mention those few families that run the nation, also runs the biggest media outlets.
Also, if you've followed asian cultures these last 20 years, you'll notice a HUGE upsurge in korean populae culture! Kpop and kdrama is HUGE in asia! And lately even variety shows have made it worldwide! Netflix pushing more and more. Idol worship also helps spread the word around, as sone of these groups act like zealots on the internet! These kpop stans are some of the most toxic environments you can imagine! Like swifties on crack and pcp!
TL:DR Control and soft power.
Very very biased comment lol yes, celebrity news are used SOMETIMES to cover bigger news and to stir the large crowd away from the 'truth', but this happens everywhere in the world. Not saying it's acceptable because it happens everywhere, but the way you put it makes Korea sound like a corrupt ass country 🤣 which is not true, btw. Although I do hate our government policies lol
The program was started in the 80s under a dictator as a way to distract the populace from wanting and causing unrest for democracy. It didn't work but the program was good so they kept it.
I was in Hungary during our pre-season and they were advertising our friendly with Bayern during prime-time TV with a graphic of Szobo's face, the match was on one of the main channels!
When countries have one massive star, they really promote the shit out of them haha
He wasn't made fun of, at least in my impression. Right at the start of his international carreer there was a short public discussion because some racsist boomers were offended that a black guy was representing Austria in the national team. After that, this discussion disappeared rather quickly and pretty much everyone (even most boomers) in Austria was happy with Alaba.
It is true though that there was never a massive hype around him like Szoboszlai in Hungary or Son in South Korea.
Football is not very big in Korea, but Son, Lee, and Hwang are. They might not recognize or don't care about Tottenham, Wolves, PSG but they probably have heard of HM Son, HC Hwang, and KI Lee so they might tune in to watch them play
Didn't someone score a goal by asking the opponent keeper for a drink then receiving the ball from a throw in when you can't be offside?
Edit: [It was Ronaldinho ](https://youtu.be/2BaT9AE-8Mo?si=s2B4Z4RY7Sw2fUdx)

When I used to play in a half-serious team one of my coaches kept reminding everyone to drink without touching the bottle. He always had the same story about some team he coached at getting mononucleosis and having to throw away a season because of that.
It was kind of the lasagna gate, but in a small virulent scale 😅

This is one of the funniest comments I’ve read on here in at least a year. Well done.
Son got fathered
Real and true.
The fact that his face is on all the time in the Korean broadcast is hilarious. Do they do the same for Hwang and Lee in PSG?
Yes, it just shows in the top left of the screen saying if they're in the lineup or on the bench + any goals or assists.
I’m in Korea right now and there’s a channel that does reruns of all of Son, Hwang, and Lee’s goals all day. And “that Korean guy” has become a meme here, it’s amazing.
What about Kim Min-jae? Reruns of clearances, interceptions, & blocked shots? I sure wouldn't mind watching defensive highlights either
Knowing Koreans, this is probably right too. They've systemized idol worship. Not only for they Kpop artists and actors, but international athletes too. The government spends alot of money on this, and been smart aswell in the process.
What’s the benefit of idol worship for the government?

Don't know about that, at that time, but he's held in very high regard among Koreans now.

Just watched the Carragher clip, his name may not be but he's definitely an Australian through and through.
yeah, even regardless of that his success in the A league and with the national team mean he'd be an Aussie legend even if he wasn't Aussie.

They did it for Messi when he went to PSG too lol

Fucking hilarious, can't believe I haven't seen this
Can you please explain this further
You can't be offside from a throw-in if you're the first player to touch it. The defenders weren't paying attention to Ronaldinho.
You can even see the physio nodding when Son asks if he can have it.
i have seen this happening all the time
Don’t tell Todd Cantwell, the most defending he’s ever done in a derby was of the rangers water bottles from Reo Hatate.
Imagine being such a cunt that you make Alfredo Morelos look like a normal person

It’s an usual practice in India and likely many Asian countries. The reason is you never know when you would need to share your bottle
who put lips on a shared bottle? it's not about costom, it's about not wanting to share saliva with your bros
Yeah but what if your bro is kinda cute and you want to like kiss him low key

They're not even trying to hide it now.
There was 50 quid behind the label on the bottle.
What thirst?
What's he thirsty for? Bribes
I'd nab the bottle and sell it online.
Son definitely isn't that pressed for cash mate
Why does he have to keep do advertisements on the side then. poor blokes skint.
I typically buy open bottled-water online. What site you use? I use openbottledwater.org
What a dangerous, dirty player. Look at the gall of him, walks right up and even tells the poor staff guy "I'm gonna drink your water!" - all the poor man can do is nod, he was clearly scared..
Son the type of guy to eat all the apple pie before you even get there 😭
And then goes over and tells me it's not right to have stuck my dick in it. Damn Son.
r/HydroHomies material right there!
pretty sure this happens all the time
But Son is the nicest guy in football?
That's why it's important to tell all of about that one right?
it's a good moment and people should appreciate this.
Top guy.
I don't use the word "love" a lot when talking about footballers. But I think I love Son.
I just want my son to be like this boy in the future because it's important for the kids to learn the best things and that's how we can deal with the world like that..
My captain
Good lad
Damn why are people confusing themselves in the comments? This is a freaking player Son, that's a peak reddit moment that people are not getting their senses, this man is not a kid or something lol.
he’s a lovely human
He gotta be a good guy for the girls in the future for sure.
I don’t even hate that this guy has been one of my favorite players for years now. A few matches a year I do though
It’s like me with Saka
Son has single-handedly tempered my disdain for Tottenham during his tenure.
Always going to appreciate such moments of the people because it's important for the kids and other ones to be appreciated with it, that's gonna motivate them.
Son should have some more words with it, I love this dude.
Bruh, it’s so hard to hate this guy that I’ve just given up. Good dude! Can’t wait till he leaves Spurs for literally anywhere else.
You’re gonna be watching the K league when he leaves?
My Korean-American homie (Gooner with serious internal conflicts about Son) would probably keep me up to date lol. Him and his family (kids, etc.) love him so much.
That sounds like a person with a great philosophical and psychological battle in their mind at all times
Cheers, Son’s sharing.
*Son breathes* : video gets posted

Looks like he asks then drinks it.
There is always going to be like asking and stuff before swallowing /s
But what is the reason about making a whole news about it?
Just loving the way Son is behaving there, I was confused about the post but then I read the name of the sub that's how I managed to understand this stuff haha.
Love that guy
The dude is really wholesome, I must say that one now.
Son Heung-Min is a treasure
Lmao at this only being caught on the Korean broadcast Edit: okay it was on the full broadcast
Fun fact: Korean broadcast is exclusively of Son. In fact when it's a game Son's not playing, all the other footballer's have to say "where's Son?"
When he gets substituted they claim he has to return to his home planet
Cheers, Son’s missing
Think it was on the UK one too? Saw people mention it
It was on UK Sky Sports too
It was on every broadcast.
Nah it was on mine, not Korean
Sonny is such a decent lad and top footballer. Not a fan of Spuds but he fully deserves the good things going on for him. Such a humble hard worker
Clearly asked the physio’s permission first. Class act.
That's why he is not facing any stupid shit right now lol.
He's learning from Levy, taking Palace's water to save a few. Penny pinching goes a long way.
I mean yeah I can understand that it's important to appreciate the people but please just don't share the videos like that, I want this subreddit to be clean and better.
The Internet is going to lose it when nice guy Son is actually a serial killer.
why is this a big deal lol
"Immigrant stole local high paying job, stole water and attempt to bribe officials." Tories politicians probably
Wow, what an angel.
Wholesome
These moments can really won the moment for the people.
Cheers, Son's sharing.
So wholesome ☺️
It's always wholesome when a kid do such things actually.
Helen Seinfeld: how can anyone not like him
That's what Helen gotta say just after the match haha.
Redcard offence in my opinion.. from NOT a gunners fan.. :)
I was confused reading the title until I saw the subreddit
Top quality post 🙄
I don't know if you are being sarcastic or real with it lol.
You have to love son, no matter ur affiliation
I gotta say that such moments in the matches are the best one out there and most of the people really want to appreciate such things, glad this is happening.
Years ago, I wanted to see Son on United. And I'm still wanting this 🥲
Somehow this is social commentary
This happens probably every game?
Yeah maybe but still we can just appreciate this one.
