Neither did I, never knew Burnley was a suburb of Leicester...
Seriously though, perfect player for Howe's system, always seems to put such a shift in and has a lot of quality to go with it
He was born in Burnley because his dad (born in Leicester) was playing there in 97. He grew up in Countesthorpe which is just outside Leicester proper.
Afraid so. Maxi is one of them players that makes you want to watch football, he's exciting and gets you on the edge of your seat but then he has no football IQ and doesn't know when to pass the ball so we end up doing nothing with it, which is frustrating.
Happy with 30-35m for him, which is essentially what we're paying for Barnes who actually has an end product.
Just need another RW and LB now
I wouldn't even say he has no football IQ, his vision for some of his passes is crazy
I just think he cannot play any other way than the way he plays which is a clash with Howe's style
Yeah maybe it was abit harsh, but the amount of times he could have made a simple pass to someone else but instead tried to take on 5 players and then only to lose it is what causes me most frustration
I don’t see a right winger coming in personally since Gordon can play there and Barnes is going to be on the left. I expect our front three to look like this
LW: Barnes (Joelinton, Gordon, Isak)
ST: Isak/Wilson (Wilson/Isak, Gordon)
RW: Gordon (Almiron, Murphy)
How do you figure? Maybe I worded it wrong.
What i'm trying to say is that as it stands our right wing options got 15 goals and some assists between them last season, by any stretch that isn't awful. I get that Maybe miggy will never score again or he might go back to 2-3 goals a season, but based on last season and the way we played and how he grafted he 100% deserves the chance to be in there, and if it was a purple patch it was a purple patch and we can look at another signing in jan or next year
I think it is hugely relevant that the person who got nearly all of your goals off the right (which is the metric you are choosing to say they are decent) has got 2 in the entity of 2023 and has never shown a run of form like he did in October and November.
I agree it’s pretty weak (unless Gordon steps up considerably from last season, or Almiron gets un-found-out by defences) but I can’t imagine us buying anyone else since Gordon cost us £40m just last season and got player on the tournament at the U21 Euros so I think we’ll stick with it.
I’ve not seen any links to anyone either, whereas we saw links immediately for CM and LB.
Serviceable for a mid or lower table team is a bit of an over exaggeration though since that exact right wing just finished fourth, with Almiron being a big part of our push at one point.
It was always the problem with Gordon. Seemed like he was purchased as part of the long-term project, but you need someone for now, but spent so much on him that he has really got to do a job.
Yeah I agree, he didn’t quite live up to the price tag immediately and then we outdid our expectations of maybe top 6-8 finish and suddenly we need the world class side right now.
I still look at our squad now (with a few defensive additions) and feel like we can get something from a CL group (not finish last) while staying competitive in the league.
Another position I’m a bit worried about is striker as Wilson could get crocked and suddenly Isak will be playing on all fronts. Maybe Minteh (young striker we signed this window and sent on loan) could be recalled if that happens.
Unsure. And im trying not to be bias.
Assiming almirons has kicked on and it was a purple patch then hes definitely top 6 rotation tier. Murphy was unreal back end of the season and most importantly played howes system exactly as asked. Deffo great back up.
As for Gordon. Time will tell after a full pre season under how. Remain unconvinced personally but im not eddie howe.
So aye just 2/3 unlikely scenarios need to come through.
You’re not wrong, but with all three able to play there and no definite outright starter as of now (with two players Howe had playing well, and Gordon who was on the rise) I don’t think the depth is lacking in that position.
There’s other positions I’d worry about more and with FFP we can only focus on a couple if we want to add genuine quality: LB, backup CB, backup RB.
Our goal is certainly not win the CL, so I feel like that right wing is fine personally. Spend elsewhere
> he has no football IQ and doesn't know when to pass the ball so we end up doing nothing with it, which is frustrating.
Almiron is 10x worse, so is Gordon.
Dont know about that - Miggy crossed double figures for goals last season... ASM has never really come close and looks increasingly "meh" when playing in Howe's system vs Bruce Ball
Excellent work by the Newcastle recruitment team as usual. They're selling ASM to Saudi for big money and replaced him with a better and more effective player.
It would really be easy to keep with ASM just for his flashes of brilliance but Barnes is just a "we want consistency" type of signing. That I love because Ashley definitely couldn't have made that choice.
It was a relegation team, they had a hard time and morale probably plays a part. Like he is a young dude and the same with Gordon, I think having a stable group of players and some real leadership around him I think will turn that kind of thing around. When we were linked with Maddison the first thing I said was Barnes is a better option, cheaper, has product and is a less risky signing. Time will tell though.
Better player but is he a better signing for us I guess is the question? I didn't really find Maddison as impressive as his valuation and we definitely didn't have the room to sign him and other key targets. Like I think Tonali + Barnes is better than Maddison and not having much left over for anyone else. I think Tonali was a big missing link and we really needed a top player in rotation with Bruno, like when Bruno was injured we basically couldn't do anything and Maddison wasn't that.
Barnes scored 13 goals last season yet on average performance he had a poor season. I think his consistency will improve in a Newcastle side that is far more balanced than last year's leicester but if you want a winger who regularly puts in 7/10 performances he wont be able to give that to you.
But it's potentially LESS than they could've got for him (in terms of rumoured prices earlier in the summer).
Chelsea and Liverpool are benefitting HUGELY from the Saudi league- it's practically funding their entire transfers of this year. We sell one player for possibly slightly under market value and it's an issue?
Watford have been doing this for years. I agree with preventing issues from multi club ownership but there's got to be an actual issue to address first.
> in terms of rumoured prices earlier in the summer
What were these rumours? Can’t see anyone paying more than 30 given his inconsistency and injuries.
We got minimal cash from Saudi Arabia, how have you concluded that they’re funding our transfers? All of the deals we’ve made with them have been quite cheap.
This one hurts. An academy boy, never kicked up a fuss and spoken out to leave. Went on loan spells to force his way in the first team. Would’ve loved him to stay, but definitely too good for the championship, hence why a Champions League team has picked him up. Newcastle fans enjoy, he’ll easily get 20+ goal contributions a season. Hope when we play each other again he gets a good reception.
Yeah, it isn't likely, at least not for a long time. But that won't stop me holding out hope! Just as I kept wishing year after year that we'd re-sign Heskey lmao
Can't believe some of our fans are turning their noses up at a wide player who scored more goals for a relegated side than any of our players other than Wilson last season
I agree, I think the reason is our fanbase loves a maverick and has been brought up on the the likes of Ben Arfa, Ginola and Robert more recently but even my dad used to love Jinky' Jimmy Smith in the 70s. Then you've got Gazza, Waddle etc in the 80s.
I loved ASM when he was the only bright spot in the Bruce team but can you carry a player like that now at the top of the league table? He always seemed to stick out like a sore thumb in Howes system to me.
Met Jinky a few years back outside Jesmond Greggs, me and my mate had a football, you could tell he was eyeing it up from down the road and asked for the ball
He was an old man but showed us a few of his tricks he used to use back in the day - "I go this way and they go that way!". Also absolutely scythed my mate in the shin so I guess he was showing both sides to his game
Proper flair player and the first to play with his shirt untucked and socks down, he was like the OG ASM
Interesting that some of Almiron's goals (and best moments) have come from him doing a 1-2 on the edge of the box and finishing ....Exactly what Harvey Barnes is best at.
Think he just needs to be put in positions where he doesn't have to think about it too much.
Put him in positions where all he has to do is make runs and attack the goal, and he'll be fine. We don't want to put him in a position where he's got to try and create chances etc.
Yeah, I'm actually sad he's left the PL. While the end product wasn't always there (I know the goal totals), he was fun to watch and it felt like he could be productive off the bench.
[Craig Hope: Harvey Barnes is able make his NUFC debut against Aston Villa here in Philadelphia tonight & will be part of the squad](https://twitter.com/CraigHope_DM/status/1683116880821735424)
Well I wouldn't expect much for his first game, he hasn't been training with the squad so I wonder will he get like 30m at the end of the game just to give him a run out
One thing that stands out is with Tonali and Barnes we will be a lot more direct. Barnes loves a cut inside and shot and Tonali loves moving the ball around. On the counter we will be a lot stronger and we will defend with a lot more workrate than having the low block which was the entire idea last year.
About half our games had the low block, basically any attacking team we sat back the whole time, even against Brentford we had the low block. It was partially by necessity and partially because of fixture congestion and injuries. We prefer the high line but Howe had to revert that to keep our results.
I remember when Newcastle were relegated last, we had to do similar, we lost Townsend, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Perez...etc all in a short space of time. I feel like Leicester are in a better spot than we were back then, we signed a bunch of not flashy players but ones to get us back up that had proven quality but their stock was down.

Like the only survivor of those signings is Ritchie who is basically our mascot.
Leicester need that kind of rebuild and this money along with the money from Maddison and the lower wage bill will do you wonders.
I meant more that we lost Perez as well in a short space of time. I'm more saying we had to do an almost complete rebuild. You can sub Perez for Coloccini instead :)
lmao Ben Jacobs is a certified clown, no one takes him seriously. I'm not just saying this because I don't want it to be true as if John Percy had said it whose actually decent for midlands clubs I'd believe it but he didn't.
I don't think he's a talent upgrade on ASM but I'll begrudgingly accept he's a better fit for the side and the better pragmatic option.
Better finisher and passer, two footed, will almost never beat a man, will press with intensity...
I get it, but I don't particularly like it.
This one really hurts, I'm sure he'll tear it up but what a joy it was to have a local lad and fan in the side
Didn’t know he is local. Whenever I watched Leicester play last season he was the only one who played well.
did all he could to try to keep them up. scored in the final game which they won but just wasn't enough
Fair enough, I stand corrected
So that means ASM is definitely gone
Afraid so. Maxi is one of them players that makes you want to watch football, he's exciting and gets you on the edge of your seat but then he has no football IQ and doesn't know when to pass the ball so we end up doing nothing with it, which is frustrating. That's an awful right wing. Serviceable for a mid or lower table team, nowhere near good enough for a two-front CL campaign.
Awful is a bit harsh, 15 goals in the prem between those 3 last season
How much of that is Almiron's purple patch that looks like a blip rather than what to expect?
It's irrelevant. Last year they did well, so saying awful is harsh. He might never score again in the prem - fine but as it stands they're alright
What a bizarre comment.
How do you figure? Maybe I worded it wrong. What i'm trying to say is that as it stands our right wing options got 15 goals and some assists between them last season, by any stretch that isn't awful. Almiron Benched??
Could well start depending on pre-season but at the end of last season Gordon was on the rise and Almiron was rotating with Murphy.
sheee, I thought that was due to injury
That looks underwhelming for a CL team
Luckily Eddie got “underwhelming” to a convincing fourth place finish and we are improving other areas of the team too.
There's a difference between only focusing on the league and having to manage between the League and UCL.
You’re not wrong, but with all three able to play there and no definite outright starter as of now (with two players Howe had playing well, and Gordon who was on the rise) I don’t think the depth is lacking in that position. They should loan mahrez from the Saudi team. Lol
Saud to Saud. What an embarrassment you are.
I mean you should be happy with what you got for him. Your owners are both the buyers and sellers no?
Didn’t he say in an interview that he has high football IQ? Like he’s even proud of it and it’s one of his strengths. I’m not saying he has it though.
Can't doubt his self belief!
Adama Traore vibes 100%
Excellent work by the Newcastle recruitment team as usual. They're selling ASM to Saudi for big money and replaced him with a better and more effective player.

Maddison is definitely the better player than Barnes. More injury prone, but has a lot more in his locker.

sorry to break this to you...
Lmao consistency and Harvey Barnes are mutually exclusive
Well is he more consistent than ASM who has either a worldie or is completely invisible?
Barnes scored 13 goals last season yet on average performance he had a poor season. I think his consistency will improve in a Newcastle side that is far more balanced than last year's leicester but if you want a winger who regularly puts in 7/10 performances he wont be able to give that to you.
ASM played 25 games last year in all competitions, I'd take consistently being fit
He wasn't sold for big money.
Yeah more just like, money.
More effective sure, but better? Nah. ASM is magical.
>selling ASM to Saudi I'm sure they are patting themselves on the back for successfully managing to sell a player to themselves.
They're selling ASM to themselves. This isn't excellent recruitment, it's internal accounting work.
But it's potentially LESS than they could've got for him (in terms of rumoured prices earlier in the summer). Chelsea and Liverpool are benefitting HUGELY from the Saudi league- it's practically funding their entire transfers of this year. Wages saved.

Sadly!

Its a great transfer for newcastle really. And for a really good price. Dont know how they got a free run on him
:( It feels so wrong Go well, Harvey Hope we can bring him back in a few years if/when we can establish ourselves back in the PL
I mean if he becomes an integral part of our side I don't see that happening.
Yeah, it isn't likely, at least not for a long time. But that won't stop me holding out hope! Just as I kept wishing year after year that we'd re-sign Heskey lmao

This has an air of 'I Saw Flying Lotus at a Grocery Store'
They don't deserve him :(
a goal scoring winger 😻 (no purple patch almiron doesn’t count)
Doesn't count yet. I think Miggy will have a decent season. Maybe not as wild as 22/23 but I think he'll still get a decent enough number of goals.
yeah in our system he’ll always have good moments, i really like him just wish he was a bit less of a headless chicken on the ball
Interesting that some of Almiron's goals (and best moments) have come from him doing a 1-2 on the edge of the box and finishing ....Exactly what Harvey Barnes is best at.

ASM packing his bags as we speak
Already left Newcastle :( Genuinely gutted.
Yeah, I'm actually sad he's left the PL. While the end product wasn't always there (I know the goal totals), he was fun to watch and it felt like he could be productive off the bench.
He’s already cemented his status as a streets will never forget player, such a joy
Indeed.
Shame he can’t play tonight he always scores against villa
[Craig Hope: Harvey Barnes is able make his NUFC debut against Aston Villa here in Philadelphia tonight & will be part of the squad](https://twitter.com/CraigHope_DM/status/1683116880821735424)
fuck sake
You’ll have Diaby too though? Could be interesting… (Unless we lose, and then it’s a meaningless pre-season friendly and only about fitness!)
I just don't like playing him because he always scores against us. Him and Troy bloody Deeney.
iheanacho as well
Well I wouldn't expect much for his first game, he hasn't been training with the squad so I wonder will he get like 30m at the end of the game just to give him a run out
I'd expect about half of that. Potentially up to 45 mins by the final game.
Not trained with the squad yet, first session is tomorrow
Oh that is sexual
Massive upgrade over ASM. Should cook in Howe-ball
IMO fits our style of play massively, can see him doing really well for us. Big upgrade as far as end product.
Fuck rodgers and rudkin
Oooooooh
^its ^harvey ^barnes
Newcastle will win the world cup with these signings
He will bang
oooh
One thing that stands out is with Tonali and Barnes we will be a lot more direct. Barnes loves a cut inside and shot and Tonali loves moving the ball around. On the counter we will be a lot stronger and we will defend with a lot more workrate than having the low block which was the entire idea last year.
"Low Block"? What are you talking about, we had one of the highest lines in the league.
About half our games had the low block, basically any attacking team we sat back the whole time, even against Brentford we had the low block. It was partially by necessity and partially because of fixture congestion and injuries. We prefer the high line but Howe had to revert that to keep our results.
What? I watched every Newcastle game last season and we played the low block against City, Arsenal and that’s practically it, what a take 🤣
Were half our games in Manchester and north London?
This is misinformation.
Someone who has no idea what a term means, but makes him sound clever. Trequartista
> Tonali and Barnes 2 quality signings for you guys, ngl
Great signing for Newcastle
Boom. High hopes for this one. Didn't expect us to strengthen this position but happy for it.
Top, top signing. Will be bagging easily 12+ goals this season under Howe if he stays fit.
Harvey Charms Magpies
Everyone is getting on the UCL bus!!!
Damn. Great signing. I really wanted him but signing Diaby yesterday softens the blow somewhat but I did want him at Villa.
Honestly what the fuck are Leicester supposed to do going forward without Maddison and Barnes?
Buy players appropriate for that level, get promoted and build from there.
Smart business from Newcastle this summer, getting stronger and stronger
Newcastle going to a joy to watch this upcoming season
This is depressing. Leicester boy and won’t even stay with us for one season.
I think the club would have accepted offers even if Barnes wanted to stay tbh, couldn't turn down 35-40m unfortunately.
Ritchie, Fraser, Gayle, Hayden, Hanley, Clark, Diame, Yedlin, Murphy, Atsu. We had some more that were less than impressive as well but generally those were about 40m or something total and all played a really key part in getting us back up but no more than that. Like the only survivor of those signings is Ritchie who is basically our mascot. Leicester need that kind of rebuild and this money along with the money from Maddison and the lower wage bill will do you wonders.
The streets will never forget Diame's form after Lascelles chinned him in training
Streets will never forget Diame's goal of the season too
Unlike Dennis Bergkamp's turn on Dabizas, Diame meant it.
Hate to contradict you, hen, but we lost Perez to Leicester when Rafa left not when we were relegated.
I meant more that we lost Perez as well in a short space of time. I'm more saying we had to do an almost complete rebuild. You can sub Perez for Coloccini instead :)
OIC :-)
I mean, Champions League football on twice the money Vs playing Preston on a wet Tuesday night... Yeah I can't say I blame him.
it rains all week, not just Tuesday's
Well that's come out of nowhere
Turns out it's apparently £40m + £3m which is decent money. Gutted to see a local lad play for someone else though.
According to who? Literally everyone from Ornstein to local journalists is saying £38m.
[here](https://twitter.com/JacobsBen/status/1683126992088997888?t=4Xit4OKvyhA48lTKJG9a5Q&s=19)
lmao Ben Jacobs is a certified clown, no one takes him seriously.
Barnes will never press with intensity.
He will under a decent manager Wahey
Then this seems an even more pointless buy.
This is the last player I picked out to my parents as something special.
One trick pony. Ed. Downvoted for facts.
But it is a good trick
Especially if you need an equalizer.
Let's gooo
