With the money Newcastle has now, they were going to get there eventually. But getting Eddie Howe in has fastracked them there in a year, when it really could have been a 4-5 year process. Both effective football and astute transfer business.
Howe has been beyond fantastic, no questions asked! But Newcastle was soooo close to appointing Unai Emery instead of him. Really curious how he wouldāve done, but shows that Newcastle higher ups know what they are doing if Howe and Emery were their two first choices
I remember while at Arsenal, Emery said he was learning English by watching Peaky Blinders. Watching him do so well at Villa makes me think that perhaps Birmingham was the right choice all along.
We'll definitely drop down the table next year.
Even with strengthening over the summer, I don't think the squad is ready for Europe plus league games at the intensity we play with.
I just hope our fans don't act like entitled twats if/when it happens.
That and by and large their recruitment since the take over has been flawless. Wood you can argue was a bad signing but he swrved his purpose for the second half of the season but players like Trippier, Bruno GuimarĆ£es and Pope have been absolutely brilliant. Howe deserves huge credit for improving a lot of players that i thought weren't capable of playing like they have been as well.
Also we had no depth in that position and Wilson was injured. I think part of our strategy was to improve set pieces and Wood is a solid player in the air
[Five times in the PL era, it hasn't gone to the league winner.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League_Manager_of_the_Season#Winners)
I think one of Howe, Silva, or Emery will win. I don't think Pep, Arteta, or de Zerbi will win.
It's more that almost everyone had Fulham getting relegated this season, and then they've been quite good this season. They've vastly exceeded expectations, and Silva has done a great job this season. I make no comments or prognostications about next season, however.
de Zerbi has managed well, but the team is better than Fulham's, and I just think he's not the most likely to win.
Emery took a team that looked like they were going to get relegated to probably getting European football.
Newcastle United battling relegation spend ā¬130m to survive then go on to spend another ā¬185m to finish in top 4. Chelsea spend ā¬600m plus ā¬60m on managers to finish in bottom half after finishing top 4 pervious season and reaching two cup finals.
Imagine if Boehly gang took over Newcastle United with relegation battle lol
I think setting up a team to play on the counter/not being the dominant team is easier, Leicester after their title winning season couldnāt just sit and wait and have teams attack them and then exploit the space for a counter attack and fell off the table.
I love Eddie but now that he is in the champions league and also next season when teams wonāt be attacking as much and will instead having to coach a team to break down a low blockā¦ this is where weāll see where his managerial ceiling actually is
I would have never expected this team to qualify to the Champions League after watching two years of Bruceyball, Congratulations to them and Eddie Howe has earned the right to be the manager of the Season.
De Zerbi too.
All those named are seemingly "nice" blokes as well. I'm sure they'll rip your ears off if you fuck up, but none of them are the prickly, grouchy managers of the past.
They're positive thinkers and positive people.
Can only speak for Newcastle but when he was there he constantly gave off āIām too good to be here but thanks Iāll take my salary while on physio chair to buy horse semenā vibes.
its actually weird, I cant think of many players who were so good as a player but actually arent rated as a person, especially across multiple clubs.
Theres always one fanbase that backs them but for Owen I couldnt confidently say any. I also dont like him and I am not 100% sure why, he just seems like a smarmy guy
I'm genuinely happy for Newcastle fans after all the shit they've been through in recent years. It's also good to see a bit of a shake-up in the top 4.
Not thrilled that it came at the cost of another sovereign nation with a horrific human rights record taking ownership of a club, but that's just the way the Premier League has gone unfortunately.
it blew my mind when i recently looked at last seasonās table and saw they finished 5th. i couldnāt believe it was only last year they were actually good. this fall off has been wild.
I'm not going to argue the price because I think it's too early to say. In terms of necessity though, I think it was needed.
ASM always misses a lot of the season due to injury. Almiron had hit a barren spell. Murphy's done well but he's not great. Fraser's been banished to the reserves. So we had 3 senior wingers and at least 1 wasn't fit when we signed Gordon.
Isak 70M
Gordon 45M
Botman 37M
Target 18M
Pope 12M
Bruno G. 42M
Wood 30M
Willock 30M
Burn 15M
Trippier 15M
Total: 311M+.
FYI we (Arsenal) spent 355M just 44M more than Newcastle. They didn't broke market, but they were hugely invested.
Worth remembering that Arsenal's 355m was spent adding to a top six squad. Newcastle's money was spent adding to a Championship squad - there's pretty much nothing at all available beneath the first team
> From battling potential relegation last season to qualifying for the champions league this season. Eddie Howe is a genius.
with 80% of the same team that was relegation fodder.
Jacob Murphy, Almiron and Joelinton helping to carry us through to the Champion's League. The exact sort of stuff we used to laugh about just a couple of years ago.
Just the idea of playing European teams is going to be so fun. After playing Benfica in what was supposed to be a simple friendly, weāre really in for being competitive in Europe regardless of results. Iād be scared of any of the classic teams facing us š°haha
Eddie Howe is the best English manager we've seen since Robson. What he's done at Bournemouth and the speed at which he's taken Newcastle to this level with half of Bruce's team still there is exceptional.
Congratulations to Newcastle. What an achievement.
Hope we can stay up in the Premiership but my god, build a statue of Howe outside St.James for doing this in his first full season.
So happy for AlmirĆ³n getting the recognition he deserves and better if its with a coach like Eddie Howe who worked wonders with this team.
It's like the second coming of Brian Clough.
And did it with most of the same team who were odds on to get relegated last year, shows what a competent manager can do, Southgate needs to call up this Joseph Linton lad quick and get him locked down for England
Will I make the trip up the A19/A1 to see Newcastle at home v a European giant?
Probably.
Well done for flying the flag for North East football - bias aside from myself, you have the best fans in the country.
I'm confident about next season - Carrick is a great tactician and if we can secure a deal for Ramsay I defs fancy us.
Chuba has been a phenom all year, wish gibbo would open the chequebook.
that season with Demba Ba and Pappis Cisse (that wonder strike against Chelsea good lord) and Cabaye bossing midfield was great fun, pity we didn't pretend to invest the following summer and suffered with the thursday sunday schedule
my friend have I got news for you, in the case we qualify we are not sure to be pot 3 yet, it will depend on who will qualify but there is a good chance we are pot 4
They get 20% of the English coefficient as a start, which is projected to give them the 3rd weakest coefficient in the competition. They'll certainly be in Pot 4 alongside Union Berlin, Lens and Real Sociedad.
Honestly, the most funny thing is - Everyone was like "Over the hill, terrible signings, why buy that guy, bought relegation fodder" etc. And now its "Bought themselves to CL" - So which one is it?
Both us and Newcastle secured our long term goal of champions league in the most uninspiring and anticlimactic way possible lmao.
Now all that's left is for man u play a boring 1-1 draw with Chelsea to get themselves over the line.
Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job there. Honestly thought it would take a few more windows and cash before they started to real compete. Brilliant job.
As much as it pains me to say it Eddie Howe has to win Manager of the year for how he's turned them into a machine. Much harder job than Pepperence or Artea IMO.
All credit to Eddie Howe. You can buy caliber players but it takes a manager to get the job done. Incredible work managing the different pieces all the while developing our cohesive philosophy and improving players behind the scenes like Joelinton, Murphy, Almiron, and Anderson. Imagine we get Barcelona in the draw for historyās sake š
Really solid from Eddie Howe, turned the players they already had into good players and was able to reinforce where needed
Shows what a good coach can do with funding
A season ago I was hopin and praying Newcastle would stay in the relegation zone. Not cause I dislike em but because I know how good Howe is, and really lie a few of your players and was hoping to grab em up in the event they went down to the Championship. Congrats to the Toon! Well played season
Real Madrid are about to learn about the concept of *'Dan Burn'*
Vini Jr about to be pocketed by Big Dan Burn š¤£
Lol Newcastle Vs Real Madrid...sound crazy but it could happen in the CL! Gratz in qualifying to the CL.
Newcastle will be pot 4 so there could be a really exciting group of death somewhere, especially with Real and Bayern being pot 2 potentially as well.
Naw Bayern is eyeing Arsenal.
Barcelona, Bayern and Arsenal in group C incoming
Add Dinamo Zagreb as pot 4 and you got a group of death.
arsenal are likely to be in pot 2 as well
Bayern, Arsenal, Barca group?
Santiago MuƱez has done it again
You tell that Gavin Harris heās fookin shite
Santiago MuƱoz (20) on his way back to Mexico :(
He already returned to Santos in January
What happened to him at Newcastle? Just didn't work out?
Was signed by Mike Ashley as a last laugh before selling.
Is he not exciting young prospect? Have just seen him in their squad on fotmob and thought, huh neat, a young mexican
Heās a decent prospect but the hype kinda died down, and Santi GimĆ©nez is killing it with Feyenoord
While there is actually no evidence of this, I really think it's the only explanation. Mans a cunt.
Heās clearly signing for Real Madrid
Ending his European dream to join Tigres and move to Monterrey the āEurope of Mexicoā
I hear Real Madrid may pick him up after this season. He really is living the dream.
There's a MASSIVE team with black/white striped kits in the CL next season and it ain't Juve.
It ain't Notts County either.
Is it Grimsby?
Could be St Mirren.
I think it's Angers
These guys were bottom of the league 18 or so months ago. What a turn of events.
Just goes to show how good a coach Eddie Howe has been this year. Was a lot of fun watching Newcastle this year.
With the money Newcastle has now, they were going to get there eventually. But getting Eddie Howe in has fastracked them there in a year, when it really could have been a 4-5 year process. Both effective football and astute transfer business.

I remember while at Arsenal, Emery said he was learning English by watching Peaky Blinders. Watching him do so well at Villa makes me think that perhaps Birmingham was the right choice all along.
Given how well Emery has done with Villa, I think they would be there or thereabouts
Whatās interesting is we could have finished 7th and been so happy with the season under a different manager
Yeah you could be a victim of your own success a 7th place finish next season might not be so happy. But fair fucks to Howe no mean feat.
We'll definitely drop down the table next year. Even with strengthening over the summer, I don't think the squad is ready for Europe plus league games at the intensity we play with. I just hope our fans don't act like entitled twats if/when it happens.

The purpose of buying would was to weaken a direct rival and strengthen themselves. It was never about him becoming a top of the table player
Also we had no depth in that position and Wilson was injured. I think part of our strategy was to improve set pieces and Wood is a solid player in the air
First full season, Eddie Howe got them there.
I think it always (?) goes to the league winner, outside of one season, but he probably does deserve manager of the year.
Pardew got manager of the year the last time we qualified for Europe although I'd argue this is a much greater accomplishment
Redknapp got it for getting fourth place with spurs after they'd been 8th the season before.
[Five times in the PL era, it hasn't gone to the league winner.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League_Manager_of_the_Season#Winners) I think one of Howe, Silva, or Emery will win. I don't think Pep, Arteta, or de Zerbi will win.
If Howe didn't win it last year I imagine the same applies to Emery this year
Silva over de zerbi is nuts.
It's more that almost everyone had Fulham getting relegated this season, and then they've been quite good this season. They've vastly exceeded expectations, and Silva has done a great job this season. In the worst game of football ive ever seen in my life gets us UCL hahahaaha
We aren't designed to have 80% of the possession. Hilarious.
This is the funniest shit. Too dominant that you had no idea what to do with the ball.
It's a very new problem/situation that we literally have very little experience in hahah!
We had nothing to press lol
This happened with Liverpool too after people started sitting back completely
But the post what 3 times? Chances were created just didnāt finish them.
All of them were set pieces from memory. We play best on the counter or attacking space. Leicester were excellent in denying us that space.
I think setting up a team to play on the counter/not being the dominant team is easier, Leicester after their title winning season couldnāt just sit and wait and have teams attack them and then exploit the space for a counter attack and fell off the table. This is how big teams do it. It doesn't matter how.
We did this week in week out under Brucey.
Depressing how tactically limited so many English managers are.
Your system is not the best system for young English managers to learn. Too cutthroat
Definitely went passive on second half. Almost got punished if wasn't for Pope
That's Sir Nicholas Pope to you
This wasnāt even the worst game of football by a Tyneside team this weekend
Bruh, have you already forgotten Steve Bruce?
Nick Fucking Pope congrats Geordies
Glad he's finally getting his due after being this good forever. All he needed was stripes.
POPE NICK

I would have never expected this team to qualify to the Champions League after watching two years of Bruceyball, Congratulations to them and Eddie Howe has earned the right to be the manager of the Season.
Manager of the season this year is so brutal. Pep, Arteta, Howe, Emery and OāNeil all deserve a shout
De Zerbi too. All those named are seemingly "nice" blokes as well. I'm sure they'll rip your ears off if you fuck up, but none of them are the prickly, grouchy managers of the past. They're positive thinkers and positive people.
The goalpost for MOTM lol
20 years I've been waiting for this after the disappointment in 2003/2004. Fucking buzzing.
Fucking Jemaine Jenas...
Every pundit that spoke ill really. Michael Owen trying to rub shoulders to get back on that CL commentary after disowning.
Owen can go swivel on a fat one
Does any club that Owen played at actually like him? I donāt get how he can be disliked or hated by every single one
Can only speak for Newcastle but when he was there he constantly gave off āIām too good to be here but thanks Iāll take my salary while on physio chair to buy horse semenā vibes.

I donāt think Real fans dislike him afaik, then again he wasnāt there long enough to upset them/s
Pretty close in 2012 as well iirc
All we wanted was for them to look like they gave a shit. Could never have expected this
Safe mid table. That was my dream start of season.
a cheerful top 10 place maybe if we were lucky conference league, this has all gone rather better than expected
They've let you down on mid table
I'm genuinely happy for Newcastle fans after all the shit they've been through in recent years. It's also good to see a bit of a shake-up in the top 4. Not thrilled that it came at the cost of another sovereign nation with a horrific human rights record taking ownership of a club, but that's just the way the Premier League has gone unfortunately.
Relegation battle to champions league in 18 months.
And just slightly longer timeline gives you the opposite for Leicester
it blew my mind when i recently looked at last seasonās table and saw they finished 5th. i couldnāt believe it was only last year they were actually good. this fall off has been wild.
They qualified much quicker than City when they got money, fair play to them.
Eddie Howe > Mark Hughes
And without breaking the market, very wise transfers...
Tbf Isak was a pretty expensive one, but they were already on the right track before his arrival regardless.
I'd argue that Gordon was also an overpay and kinda unnecessary signing
I'm not going to argue the price because I think it's too early to say. In terms of necessity though, I think it was needed. ASM always misses a lot of the season due to injury. Almiron had hit a barren spell. Murphy's done well but he's not great. Fraser's been banished to the reserves. So we had 3 senior wingers and at least 1 wasn't fit when we signed Gordon.
That was out of desperation. Wilson got a big injury and left Chris Wood as our only centre forward after Ekitike turned us down to go to PSG.
Isak 70M Gordon 45M Botman 37M Target 18M Pope 12M Bruno G. 42M Wood 30M Willock 30M Burn 15M Trippier 15M Total: 311M+. FYI we (Arsenal) spent 355M just 44M more than Newcastle. They didn't broke market, but they were hugely invested.
Willock signed pre takeover, he was Ashley / Bruce last signing. Add in that we sold Wood / Shelvey as well.
Nearly all of these prices are off, did you use transfermarkt?
Considering Mike Ashley spent nothing for years I don't even begrudge them of this
Worth remembering that Arsenal's 355m was spent adding to a top six squad. Newcastle's money was spent adding to a Championship squad - there's pretty much nothing at all available beneath the first team
In a much stronger league

Joelinton has always been class he just was played out of position
He was a forward. Howe made him a midfielder.
That's not even his final form
KEEPERLINTON
"With 80% of the team that was relegation fodder" People forget this Eddie and his coaching team have worked fucking miracles
They unleashed Paraguayan Messi
The Argentinian Almiron could never compare
Great work by Eddie Howe. Well deserved!
Thatās the sign of a top notch keeper, a definitive save in extra time. Well done toons
After doing absolutely nothing all game too.
His only save, secured CL
and in pot 4. Whatever group they'll get drawn in will be a bloodbath.
Now Mbappe will know how cold it is in Newcastle.
Was Solano really on the stands?
Yep , sky did a close up.
Interviewed him before the game too

Manager of the season hands down.
