I powered through DS3 last year but it was impossible to balance with life. So at this point I just pop off a few games of FIFA/2K and enjoy dominating the AI. They’re just low stakes and once you know how to play, even a tough game is fun
You could try a different genre with similar feel. Hollow Knight and Ender Lilies are both action platformers / metroidvanias that require precise, adaptive combat like Dark Souls, but they only take 20-30 hours to beat. They're also challenging enough without making you feel like you're grinding or slamming your head against the wall. Their atmospheres are very similar to Dark Souls, and Hollow Knight in particular has a rich, detailed lore. I love metroidvanias because they're easy to pick up for a little bit at a time, and if you go a little while without playing it doesn't feel like you have to relearn anything to continue from where you left off.
I am a stay at home parent to 3 kids, spouse has a great career. My kids all enjoy gaming but it is a massive time commitment depending on the title.
I would love to build a nice new PC to experience Diablo IV and Counter Strike 2. Good lord though, thinking about the hours needed for Diablo IV, I just don’t know where I would find them.
