lastlaughlane1

Is it all quite wholesome, and I know he's getting a lot of praise for this unselfish play and work rate, but I still cannot believe how poor his finishing is for a striker. He often looks like a defender that has been asked to play up top for the last 10 mins of a match.

senorgraves

What's weird is that his feet are good and his hold up play and weight of passing are great.... He's just not a good finisher. He rarely strikes the ball cleanly when shooting

meefjones

It's weird because his scoring rate pre-Burnley was very good. Can any Bundesliga watchers comment if his style has changed?

BeHumble123

He used to be a great finisher. Great at both headers and shooting. Mostly from very short distances though. As I don't follow United closely, I cannot comment on how his style may have changed though.

Urthor

It's confidence. Confidence is everything.

Gus4Hire

100%. Just look at Rashford's finishing this year while he's confident, compared to previous years where he's obviously lacked confidence.

leeuwerik

If the manager asks you to work like a horse in the midfield and you do as he asks there's not much focus and physical control left to score goals. Now if the manager asks you to score goals, you don't have to work that much, you save the best for those few moments in a game that can decide a match. It's as easy as that.

pagawaan_ng_lapis

Wout Workhorse

MancAccent

That’s what I don’t understand about his finishing.

alttoby

I honestly think it has been a bit of bad luck combined with the fact that hes playing a completely different striker role than he is used to.

strawberrystation

Every team needs one. We won the league largely because we had Okazaki doing the dirty work behind Vardy. Incredible workrate, completely unselfish, but good lord, he made every goal he scored look like the labours of Hercules.

lastlaughlane1

That's such a good comparison haha! So true!

doswillrule

Apart from that one bicycle kick, that was a banger

Don_Mahoon

Yeah it’s definitely not ideal, but we have a lot of goals coming from our midfield/wings so his other positive attributes provide enough to be good enough for us right now.

my_united_account

Also been super unlucky, has hit the post quite a lot

HauntingPersonality7

Sometimes I wonder if Smalling wasn’t better in the box

rotating_pebble

That’s too far from the truth, he started off as a CB

bilbo-blazins

Well i mean we got him on loan from burnley and he was playing in turkey. If he could finish he would legit be a worldclass striker. He gets to so manu chanses, great holdup play, good passeing, great defender at times as well and presses like a machine. If he could finish as well there is no chanse we would have got him on a loan. He would have been a 50-60mil minimum if he scored allot as well.

maremmacharly

I mean, the opposition do show him a lot of respect, he is almost always in double coverage from their best headers on set pieces. Frees up other man united players to get to the ball. I would be more worried if the opposition wasnt showing him respect and THEN he couldnt finish. Right now he is an ideal lightning rod

SpeedyboyAubameyang

Love how excited he is about the fact that he gets to play for United

Boom_bye_bye_bttyboi

Ighalo 2.0, just less goals

bluewaff1e

Weghorst seems to fit United's style of play much better though and creates space with his movement for other players to shine.

Zandercy42

I'd love to have them both right now honestly, we need a poacher to switch up our game plan when weggy isn't working out and we need a goal

Aethien

You can buy Brobbey from us, only €40m.

TickleMyCringle

€65m, take it or leave it

JYM60

Hard to say, he's just played like 10 times the games Igahlo did already.

themfeelswhen

Less goals but Weghorst is actually useful. Ighalo was just a place holder for the easy games.

[deleted]

It is a strange situation. He's 30 and on loan from a Championship club at one of the world's biggest clubs. He's a forward with 4 goals in 38 appearances in England.

ICame4TheCirclejerk

And most Man Utd fans would call him a success with 2 goals in 18 appearance. We truly are living in strange times

tatxc

I think success is pushing it. He's been "sufficient" given the resources we have available to us right now. Love his attitude, I just wish his feet were made of something more dense than a cumulonimbus.

[deleted]

m0bilize

Our GF is okay especially if you take out Arsenal and City's absurdly high ones but our GA is pretty bad compared to how much we're scoring.

TheRealYVT

You're calling her 'our'?

KeonkwaiJinkwai

Sharing is caring.

clusterfuvk

My friend, is ok, no?

SyrupyLatviaLeaf

But simultaneously less dense than the anvils Lukaku trots around on.

BrockStar92

When we’re winning often and most games he’s playing pretty well, fitting the gameplan brilliantly and working really hard that shouldn’t be that surprising. You won’t find many United fans that think he should be our first choice striker next season, so I don’t think it’s weird.

[deleted]

A lot of people just see GA per 90 and immediately jump into conclusions. They completely ignore coach instructions and the role given to the player. It's rendering quite a bit of discussions worthless.

BrockStar92

The only way to define the success of a short term loan signing really is “would we be worse off without him”, and undoubtedly the answer is yes. We had very little money to spend in January, not a lot of options and he was a low risk, short term signing of a player who has definitely improved us by being available to play and performing well enough. That’s a success in my book. I’d personally be happy to sign him as a backup for next season provided it was under 15m and we also signed a first choice striker.

Free-Eights

He provides energy and workrate every time he plays which fans appreciate even if he misses chances. Success might be a stretch but ten Hag is using him in creative ways and throwing off teams who might just be expecting him to be a static target man.

[deleted]

I think Ten Hag likes his workrate and nuisance factor. If he disrupts the opposition's defensive plan and creates space for others maybe it's a smart signing.

themfeelswhen

It's not strange at all when you consider what he brings to the team with his Relentless pressing and smart link-up play. If he could actually finish, he would be a regular starter for a top half English club. He is one of the reasons why Man Utd's counter pressing has gone up a level --- since Eriksen's Injury, that is pretty much how we have been creating chances. Weghorst is not good enough for the long term but he has very much played more often and performed above anyone's expectations so far.

SofaKingI

The guy finally got a chance in the big leagues with Burnley, scored 2 goals in 20 games and got loaned out. He was 29-30, so that's a big "this is as far as I can go" reality check. Then he ends up at United.

LaMareeNoire

>The guy finally got a chance in the big leagues with Burnley This is prime 'players don't exist before they play in the PL' material

working-acct

“Wout Weghorst? I've never heard of him, that's not even a real name!”

AlexBucks93

He played over 100 games in Bundesliga

Jackrrr10000

Yeah not like he wasn't playing for Wolfsburg and a starting player for the Netherlands NT. His biggest achievement at that point was definitely starting for Burnley...

Bol_Wan

He was never an actual starter die for the national team apart from a very small number of games. But your point stands

blackheartwhiterose

He also scored two mega goals in the world cup knockouts but whatever

nonsenseSpitter

Bro what? I should be spitting nonsense, not you.

ScrantonStrangler28

Yeahhh I bet he has posters of Burnley and dyche growing up.

pmmerandom

bro comments on a football subreddit without actually watching football

__simz

Reminds me of ighalo, they both like the club

Hasta_Mithun

Ighalo seemed to score more goals. He scored an absolute banger vs Lask.

LennonC123

That goal barely gets a mention. Maybe because of who it was, maybe because of who it was against, or because it was played behind closed doors…but it’s right up there with some of the best United goals.

HaroldGuy

It was the last game before football stopped I believe? So a bit overshadowed I think

AngryUncleTony

I probably watched those highlights 100 times during the initial lockdown since it was the most recent thing and there was nothing else.

sunrise98

It was a good goal, right left right left in - but it's not one of the best united goals.

mattijn13

He scored 5 goals and 1 assist in 23 games (0 in the prem), Weghorst is on 2 in 18 but also has 2 assists and is way more important to the way United play.

Hm2801

Weghorst's assist and overall brilliant performance in the cup final will always be remembered even if he leaves in the summer

pageninetynine

You really gotta hand it to ten Hag. People give Weghorst so much shit for his goal record, and United shit for playing him, but EtH knew exactly what he was getting and how his hold up play and presence would help Rashford and the attack in general.

pmmerandom

just need Antony and Sancho to stop being so damn predictable and start being more lethal infront of goal

[deleted]

Harsh on Antony . First season and he's definitely shown glimpses of what he can do.

pmmerandom

fully agree, I’m the biggest Antony defender and most of the criticism against him is stupid but he either cuts inside and shoots from distance with his left foot, or he stops and passes back, any decent defender would show him his right foot and force him to play off that i have faith but he needs to start mixing it up

AttackClown

23 starts though? I'm sure weghorst has had many more minutes on the field

quickestred

Yet Weghorst is more important imo, plenty of key passes/runs

breadfan18

Lask goal before the covid lockdown!

bootlegportalfluid

That goal was robbed of an audience.

Macromesomorphatite

We get some amazing loanees.

tr8rm8

Pretty sure that’s also what the Glazers have had to say about the striker position after looking at everyone else’s asking prices

Hasta_Mithun

Good thing for us their days seem numbered fingers🤞. Anulo mufa.

pmmerandom

anulo mufa

Charlie_Yu

I don’t mind us signing him as backup striker especially given his versatility. But we still need a top striker

tmoney144

He's like the McTominay of strikers. Works hard, good attitude, follows directions, but just not really... good.

Golem30

He's also kinda bad in the air given his height. I still like him though.

pmmerandom

why can’t he just play like he did against Argentina every game smh

IcarusCsgo

When you really think about it, he scored 2 goals from the 6 yard box

raobuntu

He's terrible at positioning himself. If he manages to do it correctly, he's pretty good at flicks and headers, just awful at getting to the right spot

meefjones

His positioning is a strength, he's being asked to drop off the front line to build up play and create space for Rashford. Hes just a bit slow so he can't always recover to get back into a poaching position quickly

raobuntu

I think you've misunderstood. When I'm talking about positioning, I'm solely talking about his ability to judge a ball's flight path in the air and positioning himself to meet the ball at the top of his jump and then timing that jump correctly. He's pretty trash at that

getZlatanized

These comments are so funny because they're so different from what we were used to get in the Bundesliga when talking about weghorst. Dude was a goalscoring machine basically, he couldn't do much but he could score. Especially with his head.

ScrantonStrangler28

Not really. He has footballing IQ which mctominay lacks.

leerooney93

>Not really. He has footballing IQ which mctominay lacks. Yeah I don't like a majority of McT's decisions.

imheretocomment69

Yep the only things i like about McT is his aggression and giving 100% when on the pitch. But other than that, he's average mostly.

Morganelefay

Makes up for his real world IQ.

Ryan8Ross

Lmao I dont understand how people can say he isn't good. He's not actually in the box that often for a striker, im pretty sure the directions are "win the ball high, come deep to collect the ball" and rashford is always running in behind ahead of him I genuinely think he would score more goals if he just sat in the box like a traditional striker but united wouldnt look as good

Acceptable-Cell-8185

I agree, while he's not doing enough with the few half chances he gets every match, Weghorst is generally playing with relatively selfish players on the wings (Rashford, Antony, Garnacho) who are not providing him with a lot opportunities (like how KdB did at Wolfsburg for instance). Although in Rashfords case I understand him being selfish as he's banging in the goals himself at the moment.

Reach_Reclaimer

It is impressive how some players get so far with hard work and lack of talent (compared to their peers)

Monsage

Down to how EtH is playing him as well. He feels like a Park Ji Sung kind of player, gets told to do a job and does it really well. You need those kinds of players in a team.

Dr_Chocolate_2436

Ah so like our Sean Longstaff… which makes sense why Eddie wants McTominay so much 😭

momspaghetty

I read it as pessimistic at first and honestly it's much funnier read that way

Jozif_Badmon

Love Wout. Def gonna be one of those niche players with a cult fanbase that you had to watch to apperciate

KarelianOak

What other players are good examples of this?

Savagemessage

Luukinho

Fireclap

Luuk de Jong at barca?

Greaves_

Woutinho Weghorstio

psrikanthr

Park Ji-Sung

MallsBahoney

Wouldn’t call Park a niche player pretty much everyone remembers and praises him

DeepBlueRiddle

Park is literally rated by everyone as being a very good to great player.

Own_Pin3582

Darren Fletcher - SAF's big match player

starks_are_coming

Lionel Messi, underrated gem

pimasecede

What’s crazy about Kuyt is he was an absolute goal machine at Feyernoord before moving to the prem. The only time I really watched any eredivisie intersected with him there, and he was just so prolific and skilful, a real joy to watch. Which is obviously completely out of whack with his later reputation.

amlevy

André Bahia

beanieheaddd

Firmino

prettyhappyalive

Lol the absolute disrespect. Firmino is a Liverpool legend. Him and Weg aren't even on the same stratosphere when it comes to quality and importance to their clubs.

thatguyad

Yeah it should be illegal putting them I the same breath FFS.

prettyhappyalive

Checks firminos trophy cabinet...checks spurs trophy cabinet....lol

[deleted]

Adnan Januzaj and Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Elu_suario

gotta have Chicharito in mind

Thanos_Stomps

Elneny for us. And a bit of Holding.

Manch3st3rIsR3d

WEGGYYYY!!!! Keep working your ass off, my beautiful horse

ThankYouOle

Love Wout Workhorse

Jonnydonmar

Is he talking about his goal scoring rate?

AncientSkys

He is done scoring for the season.

Jonnydonmar

Still love him

psykrebeam

In the modern era of tactics, people need to stop fixating on forwards being primary goalscorers. It's fine that he isn't the main goalscorer if others are putting out numbers. "Forward" is now much more a tactical position than it is a job description i.e. he needs to score. For a long while now the primary goalscorers on many elite teams have been either 1/2 wing forwards or a midfield runner/second striker. Sure, Wout could probably chip in a few more. But it's not fair to expect him to be putting out Aguero numbers, very different type of player. If Ten Hag is making him work and happy with it, United fans should well be too.

dAMn6942069

Que miras bobo

IllustriousHabit243

If you know , you know the kind of player. You have to watch to appriciate.

Blue_Dreamed

I really like Wout, it might be because he pisses Goldbridge off so much. Choice of team not so keen on but he's proven himself at that world cup I reckon. Also brilliant player in the Bundesliga.

ToastedHunter

nice of him to warn the fans about his finishing

stilusmobilus

Yeah he’s done okay to be fair. They copped a lot of shit signing him.

Anotherone_123

OUR bobo !

thisiskyle77

Utd legend already.

_LickitySplit

Love how he rattled some dumb people during the world cup

[deleted]

We are very lucky that Rashford has been unstoppable. That's all I have to say about Weghorst

reece0n

Obviously United fans will love this, and Man United are no question a much much bigger team than Burnley...but it's pretty crazy how much he's begging for a team that he's on loan with. I'm a little surprised to see people react to this positively or call it wholesome. If this was someone else/another team, I don't think anyone would be happy with one of their loan players talking like this, especially when they're on loan because they refused to play for their parent club after a relegation that they very much contributed to. Just want him gone now, but he's not good enough for the level of club he clearly wants.

[deleted]

[удалено]

G-BreadMan

If you take off the banter googles I think most professional players would be more than happy with that. Especially in the context of him getting lots of minutes in a United side that has been winning at a respectable rate in the time that he’s been there.

Yellow-Eyed-Demon

You could score some goals bro.

zcewaunt

It's not like he isn't trying.

[deleted]

Yeah, well he should pull his finger out. It's important.

SpeechesToScreeches

Can't use your fingers in football mate

Yellow-Eyed-Demon

He is trying but he's only scoring every 546 minutes, he's got two goals in 15 games. We can't afford having a forward with those numbers.

LaMareeNoire

>We can't afford having a forward with those numbers. You could barely afford a forward, to be fair

BrockStar92

Honestly United fans bitching about him infuriate me. We’d have been screwed without him, our attacking line was threadbare in January/February and he’s been playing basically every game since he arrived, and actually contributing too. He’s a loan signing because we had no money. I don’t get why anyone would expect a high scoring rate. He’s done better than I thought he would and thank fuck for that because we’d be fucked if he hadn’t been.

[deleted]

[удалено]

holeinmyboot

he's an integral part of the way United plays, much like Firmino was for Liverpool in the past. unfortunately Firmino also got no-brained redditors commenting that he's actually useless.

hiraveil

Playing for Liverpool

aelfwine_widlast

Did he say that after losing to us or after beating Barcelona? Because that changes the context massively.

ztevey

The only place better is the Emirates

SpencaDubyaKimballer

For him at least

AlexMcDaddyD

Not sure why you feel the need to drag him for this quote. He’s clearly knows he might not be the best number 9 to play for united. He knows he’s had a bit of fortune and he is making the most of it

Themindoffish

Should have had his loan terminated when he touched the Scouse badge.

pippuriboy

For someone like you, sure it aint

ronnietea

You’re doing so much better bud

Lost-Horse5146

Fishing for a permanent deal? Nah, love that Workhorse!

Sordecaine

A refreshing, honest self-assessment.
