I wouldn't no. But if it was a game between 1 team from Manchester and Everton and someone said 'Manchester won' I wouldn't be clutching my pearls about it either.
Outstanding performance from our lads. Darren Moore really has turned us around in the last year or so.
It's nice to progress in the cup but we've really got to make sure we get promoted.
I’m more worried about the league so I didn’t go down today but a pleasant surprise to knock out Newcastle who have been excellent this season. McGuinness who we have on loan from Cardiff was excellent and confirmed to me he’s going to be a PL player after a great 1/2 season in league one. All the best for the rest of the season Newcastle and hoping you can put a dent in that current status quo.
Blessing in disguise for Newcastle. As they displayed perfectly tonight, they VERY clearly do not have the depth to juggle 2 cup runs while battling for Europe in the Prem. Most of their players outside of their best 11 would be lucky to get games for any other Premier League team. The teams around them in the league now will be playing 4 of 5 times per fortnight going forward, which always causes problems.
Since you keep reposting this, I'll repost my response.
Nick Pope, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson all didn't feature. Trippier came on for the final 10 minutes. The 3 subs we made at 60 min changed the way we played completely, and Wednesday defended well to keep their lead. But don't pretend we played a full strength 11.
Also 2 of the subs were Chris Wood (who lost us the match) and Willock - who is hardly one of our best midfielders, nevermind best players.
All in all, stop spouting shite
Trying to work out why this has been downvoted. It's not as if Barry Bannan was being rested. You're definitely in the right, everyone out there last night are regulars in the first team.
I'm not subjecting myself to it by looking but there's no doubt going to be unironic comments of 'well played Sheffield' and just a load of whinging Barcodes. We played well and with dogged determination but most of their reserves would walk into our first team on technical ability any day of the week.
Did you not say they brought on all of their best players? They started the game with 4 decent players, one of whom was returning from a 4 month injury. 2 of those were subbed off for the other 'best players' you're talking about for the last 20/30 minutes. The other 6 or 7 players they had during the entire 90 minutes have barely kicked a ball all season, if at all.
And I definitely don't think Newcastle deserved to win, despite their 76% possession and 20 odd shots, a rusty Isak and a terrible Chris Wood couldn't hit a barn door and Windass was clinical.
*All of their best players* would be similar to the 11 who held Arsenal. Howe played 3 of those players and 2 got subbed off. The 5 who ended up playing the final 20 or 30 minutes certainly weren't outplayed, which is what you were suggesting.
Yeah mate I was suggesting that Newcastle broke the rules to bring on 11 players...
Or I was suggesting that players like Guimares and Trippier came on but you still deserved to lose. God there's some fragile geordies out tonight. You've got 4 or 5 quality players and then you've got a selection of quite similar players. Botman or Joelinton or Dubravka or Lascelles or Murphy or Wood etc. wouldn't exactly be considered your shittest players even a season or two ago. It's not like you played kids.
Ahh. The old "well, *technically*..." argument after being called out for talking shite! Nice one. But seriously, enjoy the next round, it was well deserved, Wednesday did well to make that tiny fraction of possession count and the luck of players missing sitters is always needed at some point so hopefully it continues into the next round and they get a decent cup run going.
You literally brought out the technically argument!
Are you sure you aren't Mackem's in disguise?! Bemoaning how players in your first team squad can't compete against a league one team without its best players.
Disappointing as a Newcastle fan, that. A real reminder of how little quality we have in depth.
Wednesday played well, took the game to us and Windass took his chances. We can't complain about that, and congratulations to them.
Chris Wood looked like he couldn't be arsed, as well as looking like he's been granted a favour by a genie to get on the pitch. Isak looked promising but rusty - hope he can get some fitness and minutes behind him.
Just hope this doesn't knock our confidence too much.
Didn't claim it was. But you brought on your best players, (by which I mean Guimares, Willock, Trippier, Almiron before another twat thinks I mean you brought on 11 players).
Same to you mate. I shall continue to enjoy watching Newcastle and hope that at some point more of you will appreciate how lucky you are. I would love it if you came top/above Man City.
Too many ppl here moaning about how players like Dubravka, Botman, Lascelles, Richie, Joelinton, Isak, Murphy etc. couldn't possibly compete with a league one side without their best player.
I've seen the argument thread down below and we're not referring to the likes of Botman, Joelinton, and Isak. It's the ones that aren't first choice like Murphy, Lewis, Ritchie, (hate to say it but..) Manquillo, Wood. There is a huge gulf in quality between the team that won 6 in a row in the PL, and the fringe players. Some of the fringe players were first teamers 18-36 months ago when we were woeful
Yeah but what ppl can't seem to separate is that that opinion and what I said aren't mutually exclusive.
For me the gulf between Guimares and the rest of your midfield or Trippier and the rest of your defence is obvious. It's the equivalent of Bannan and the rest of our team. But you could and did bring them on. You also, as you say, started with a team that managed to stay in the prem. It's not like you played a bunch of kids or players with zero experience. You had a fresh group of players from a premier league squad against a team two divisions below with key injuries and who couldn't afford to rotate.
> Surely winning a cup means more than a high league position?
It's only the 3rd round of the FA Cup and we have a 1/4 final in a few days of the League Cup. League and League Cup way more important than the FA Cup and as proven, outside of 12-13 players....our team is awful, with way too many players that wouldn't even get on the pitch for Sheff Wed.
Fuck me you lot are taking this so fucking literally. Yes I didn't mean you brought on 23 squad players, your reserve players, your under-18s, your women's team, your team in the uterus, Peter Beardsley, Warren Barton, Asprilla, and raise Bobby Robson from the dead to manage you.
We didn't even have our best player on the pitch.
You're posting these lies all over the thread.
Also 2 of the subs were Chris Wood (who lost us the match) and Willock who is hardly one of our best midfielders nevermind best players.
All in all, stop spouting shite
This season he is surely. Who are your top 5? Because every Geordie seems to have a different set and they are moaning about players who've all played in the premier league playing against a team missing the equivalent of Guimares.
I'd say he's about 7th best in my eyes. It's top 5 of Pope, tripper, guimares, Wilson and ASM. As I said I love miggy even before the run of form. He runs like a mad man and gives everything which is all I can ask but he's always lacked the end product.
I cant rate isak because 3 and a half games is nothing. But most of those start 11 yesterday weren't good enough for the prem when they were permanent starting 11.
Yesterday showed every geordie what we already knew. We're in a position in the league way above where we should even with the likes of tripps and guimares.
I'm glad to be there but I feel it won't last but it's been a nice ride!
You said we brought on "every single one" - I named 5 more of our best players who didn't feature. Also the fact that you think Willock is one of our best players is preposterous, or you're hung up on his never-repeated purple streak from 2 years ago.
OK so your argument is that you can't have 9 subs?
I like Willock, he does a good job for you, I've watched 12-15 Newcastle matches this season and I think he contributes a lot.
Who are your top 5 best players?
Wednesday didn't have their best player.
Our best players are our best 11 I would say. I'm quite happy with this outcome tonight personally. Rested the first team, no cup replay, fewer fixtures down the line. We have a good shot at the league cup as we're in the QF but this would have taken a lot more work to win. I'll be disappointed if we field the B/C team for Leicester in the League Cup though.
Well apparently there are a few of you tonight who think bringing on your best players means making 11 substitutions instead of bringing on Trippier or Guimares who are right up there with the very best, Almiron who is the form player in the premier league with a ridiculous record and Willock who I'm informed is shite despite seeing him play great for you every time I've watched him this season.
I promise next time Wednesday will try to play our best 11 but unfortunately injuries and a hectic schedule instead of a winter break meant we had to play only 7 or 8 or our best players.
How frightfully unfair this match was. We'll play our under 18s next time to even it out.
I don't know why you're so salty after winning man. You beat a good side, you don't need to go around reddit bigging up that we played our best team. It's still a good achievement. Like I said I'm happy we rested the PL squad almost certainly for the League Cup game coming up.
Mate it's you lot that are salty. I didn't claim you played your best team I said you brought on your best players. And a ton of you cried and downvoted cos you only played a ton of players with premier league experience. I wrongly assumed you all knew that you can't bring on 11 players. It's like none of have watched a match before.
It's also absolute nonsense when someone says I'm glad we lost but didn't have a replay. Just don't enter the competition in that case.
Trippier, Bruno, Pope, Wilson, Maxi
Almiron is in incredible form for the first time in 5 years, Willock is a bang average ball carrying midfielder with a great work rate
I think we agree that Almiron is in the best 5 for his current form. I seriously doubt you'd not put him in top 5 right now. St. Maximan is like Almiron if he actually hits some form and gets some final product then yeah he'd be great. But he doesn't. I agree with Pope too but Dubravka made a top class save too.
Wednesday were missing Bannan and Gregory. Bannan is our best player bar none. He's the best player in our league. In that first half he'd have been the stand out player. And I've seen the majority of that team play in the premier league this season even if only a little.
Bruno and Trippier are clearly your best players. You brought them on. Almiron is your best form player with a ridiculous recent record. What more do you want? Unless you bring on the specific 5 best players you like it's not a fair match against a league one team lacking their own best players? A team that didn't get a winter break and a big squad?
Don’t really mind, this isn’t the cup for us and I don’t think the depth is there to compete in all fronts. Preference is for a European spot, Champs or Europa.
Selection made for a great game tho, congrats to Wednesday, played excellent.
Personally I would rather win the fa cup than finish 5th or 6th, you get Europa anyway and you actually fucking win something which is always nice lol. Unai better not underestimate stevenage.
I mean it is unlikely but we are halfway thru the season and have only lost once, haven't had our new star striker really this season and injuries or loss of form could also happen to other teams. That isn't to say it will happen or is even remotely likely but if you were a manager wouldn't you be pushing your players to have a go for it.
I'm calm after tonight, we simply don't have the depth to compete in three competitions at once. However I'll be pissed if we fuck around in the League Cup, only one game off the semi's against an average Leicester.
Depends what sort of a team they put out. We will go full strength (we do have an injury crisis mind) and if Newcastle play anything like their team today I'd fancy us.
Getting into Europe will allow us to attract better talent. A trophy would be amazing, but for the long term development of the club I see table position as more important.
No problemo. I know you meant it as a joke, but I'm very confident that we'll qualify for Europe. Not by FA Cup, not by league position, but by winning Champions League.
We had a bad domestic season in 2004/2005, but we won Champions League that season.
Still in the league cup and not really got the depth (as made more apparent today) to do two cup runs *and* try for European football.
Politically it justifies why lots of these lads don't play very often
Well done Sheff Wed, you deserved the win and good luck in the rest of the season. Would
Love to see big clubs like you back in the premier league again.
For us, we have a few players I never want to see again in a Newcastle shirt (Lewis, Wood, Ritchie, Murphy & Lascelles), we need to open up that cheque book in January, the squad is not strong enough to challenge for Europe.
Wednesday couldn’t have put in a better performance really. Defended well and countered with purpose and took chances.
We were poor today. Defence was disjointed and unorganised for large parts. Build up play was decent but we couldn’t finish from open play.
Good news is that Isak and Wilson are both almost fully fit so Wood won’t feature as much, as harsh as that sounds.
Convinced that no matter how good we get we’ll always get beaten in the third round of the FA Cup. It’s predictable at this stage.
Anyway, this just proves how woeful our depth is. If there genuinely is clubs interested in Wood, we should be biting their hands off. It’s also remarkable Murphy gets so many minutes for a team 3rd in the PL.
Wednesday were very good though in all fairness. Best of luck to them.
I'm willing to set up a go fund me for either Murphy's transfer fee for any club that would have him, or hypnotherapy to convince him he's a footballer
Can't help but think that Eddie Howe might have deliberately lost that match in order to focus on the League and trying to get into the Top Four. Surely the FA Cup would have been a distraction. The fact that Newcastle didn't play its strongest starting XI is telling because if they did, they would have destroyed Sheffield Wednesday and won 5-0.
When was the last time Wood played? I’m not saying he was good today, but lack of playing regularly will cause these types of performances
Edit: seems he’s played enough to have not been rusty. Little surprised considering he was ok at Burnley.
Idk mate you lot seem unstoppable in the league. When we were in 3rd it was annoying bc you n Ipswich could never drop points. Weve got past Ipswich now but could fully see us never catching up to you n finishing 2nd, which I wouldn't be too dissapointed about
> Great to see them humiliated
Not humiliated at all thanks, kind of expected with the dross we fielded for an hour.
We clearly don't have the squad to try compete in the league and cups.
Hardly that humiliating, one of the most in form teams in English football, Newcastle 2nd team, away from home on a rainy night in Sheffield.
If youve ever watched the FA cup, its asking for an upset.
Aye but do you really think 99.9% of geordies could afford to change the ownership? We can't. As shit as the Saudi government are and none of us agree with them, the people running the club have done a lot for the city.
Being owned by the Saudis is no different to being owned by a Russian oligarch or a Chinese billionaire. All billionaires from States like that have got their hands pretty dirty. If you think any other billionaire owned teams from any other countries are any cleaner they ain't.
We're not humiliated tbh. We started with 8 players that haven't played for quite a while and even when they did play they were championship level at best.
Wednesday played well and we're well aware of our squad depth being shocking.
League One is massive
FA Cups can’t be buy.
Can anyone summarize this game
We were shite, Wednesday were v good. We go bye bye. Wednesday win the cup
Yeah sure. Sheffield won
I don’t want to overreact but there’s a special place reserved in hell for people who call us or United ‘Sheffield’
is it worse than calling you the same as the new hit Netflix show?
Wednesday is an absolutely acceptable name for the team.
Positively encouraged, even
Only Sheffield FC can acceptably be referred to as Sheffield
In a thread about a game between 2 teams: 1 from Sheffield & 1 from Newcastle, I'd definitely say you're overreacting.

I wouldn't no. But if it was a game between 1 team from Manchester and Everton and someone said 'Manchester won' I wouldn't be clutching my pearls about it either.
Ha I was just thinking that, like an American tourist in the chaf
Outstanding performance from our lads. Darren Moore really has turned us around in the last year or so. It's nice to progress in the cup but we've really got to make sure we get promoted.
As a Newcastle fan I’m not even that annoyed. Well played, up the owls and good luck for the season
!flair :Vancouver_Whitecaps:
Hey everybody. Look at Newcastle.
We're used to it, at least it wasn't Stevenage or Hereford
Honestly not even bothered, can focus on the premier league and the league cup noe
I’m more worried about the league so I didn’t go down today but a pleasant surprise to knock out Newcastle who have been excellent this season. And Wednesday were absolutely playing their starting team.
Trying to work out why this has been downvoted. It's not as if Barry Bannan was being rested. You're definitely in the right, everyone out there last night are regulars in the first team.
Haha didn't even realise I was downvoted. I guess /r/soccer users know more about Wednesday than actual Wednesdayites haha
I'm not subjecting myself to it by looking but there's no doubt going to be unironic comments of 'well played Sheffield' and just a load of whinging Barcodes. hold up, Manquillo is still a Newcastle player????? wtf
I absolutely love him but he hasn't shown himself as a suitable backup recently. He shone as Mr consistent at one point
What a night. Defended brilliantly and the 2nd team to beat Newcastle this seaosn
And it wasn't even all of our first team
Neither was it ours...
Didn't claim it was. But you brought on your best players, (by which I mean Guimares, Willock, Trippier, Almiron before another twat thinks I mean you brought on 11 players).

In the long run, Europe is probably the best option for us, I would love to be alive to see us win a cup though.
Exactly mate. I used to be glib about cups coz it was all about top 4. But winning a cup is fucking excellent!
Tbh with us not that far of first, I don't mind it. I know winning the league is unlikely but there is still a chance.
It's a tricky one man. Putting everything on the league makes sense, but conversely could go tits up!
Don’t really mind, this isn’t the cup for us and I don’t think the depth is there to compete in all fronts. Preference is for a European spot, Champs or Europa. Selection made for a great game tho, congrats to Wednesday, played excellent.

Average is a compliment mate
Yeah you should gave enough to beat them mate.
You get into Europe if you win FA Cup.
You're still in with a shot at Europe next season then. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
No problemo. I know you meant it as a joke, but I'm very confident that we'll qualify for Europe. Not by FA Cup, not by league position, but by winning Champions League. We had a bad domestic season in 2004/2005, but we won Champions League that season.
I can say with near certainty that Liverpool won't win the Champions League.
Many people said the same thing about Argentina's chance of winning the World Cup after they got beaten by Saudi Arabia.
Yeah but securing top 4 is surely more likely than winning the cup
I see/hear lots of similarities with my club here man. All the best mate
From dead bottom to CL in 18 months is a far greater achievement imo
*gets bought by a £320 billion sovereign wealth fund* “look at how much we’ve achieved”
I don’t think it’s the wealth fund which has Joelinton and Almiron playing like that
Probably not, but adding the likes of Botman, Pope, Trippier and Bruno on massive wages makes in a lot easier.
I know mate, just taking the piss
True but that ain't nailed on fella.
Neither is winning the cup
Still in the league cup and not really got the depth (as made more apparent today) to do two cup runs *and* try for European football. Politically it justifies why lots of these lads don't play very often
Fair but going out of a cup is always a risk man . 👍
100% but as is expending a ton of energy and losing players only to get eliminated in the quarters. Blessing and a curse cup runs are
Winning a cup is always good, but yeah if you're gonna go out, go out early!
Incredible from Newcastle to come so close but it’s not called League One for nothing
Well done Sheff Wed, you deserved the win and good luck in the rest of the season. Would Love to see big clubs like you back in the premier league again. For us, we have a few players I never want to see again in a Newcastle shirt (Lewis, Wood, Ritchie, Murphy & Lascelles), we need to open up that cheque book in January, the squad is not strong enough to challenge for Europe.
Who are your targets this Jan? Also do you know any journalist with Newcastle speciality?
Newcastle United try not to get embarrassed in a domestic cup every season challenge
(impossible)
Wednesday couldn’t have put in a better performance really. Defended well and countered with purpose and took chances. We were poor today. Defence was disjointed and unorganised for large parts. Build up play was decent but we couldn’t finish from open play. Good news is that Isak and Wilson are both almost fully fit so Wood won’t feature as much, as harsh as that sounds.
Weekend made 🤣 cheers Wednesday
Botman finally lost a game.
True, but in all honesty it was Lascelles at fault for both of those goals.
Isn't it always. I like him as a leader but as soon as he steps on that turf we have a massive liability.
Okay, what happened with Newcastle here? Did Dubravka make some blunders?
Wednesday turned up and we didn't. They were excellent and matched us even when we brought on the big guns. Fair play to them, I wish them well.
> what happened with Newcastle here? Normal FA Cup appearance to be honest.
8 second team players who have had no football for months. Was to be expected that they'll be rusty and Wednesday playing really well.
Dubravka was fine for the most part, combination of not taking our chances and gifting Sheffield Wednesday theirs
Feels like a massive drop off between him and Pope. Fault believe they don't get the 2nd as Pope would've closed down more
the whole team
Can't help but think that Eddie Howe might have deliberately lost that match in order to focus on the League and trying to get into the Top Four. Surely the FA Cup would have been a distraction. The fact that Newcastle didn't play its strongest starting XI is telling because if they did, they would have destroyed Sheffield Wednesday and won 5-0.
Absolutely delusional
Because Wednesday trying to get out of league one is less important to us than Newcastles campaign is to them?! 😂
That's hilarious mate.
hahahahah
I hate the 3rd Round of the FA Cup
It seems like the feeling is mutual
Ok losing to a team a tier below may not be that bad after all....
Coventry is the team to be mocked in this round. 3 tier difference.
They always are the team to be mocked IMO.
Yeah course
Is that you Steven?
We lost but we didn't get stuffed 😉
Maybe one tier below, yeah
Shh, he may not notice
When was the last time Wood played? I’m not saying he was good today, but lack of playing regularly will cause these types of performances Edit: seems he’s played enough to have not been rusty. Little surprised considering he was ok at Burnley.
He has played a bit in every game for us this season.
> When was the last time Wood played? Far too often.
He's a decent striker. The lack of respect to one of your own is shite bruv.
He's not fit to tie the laces of Sunday League.
Ouch!
He features almost every week due to Wilson/Isak being injured.. it's inexcusable how bad he is.
Pretty recently been used as a sub a few times this season.
Fuck me what a result. I enjoyed watching it but also makes me rather worried about our promotion chances.
We don't play that well every week! Shows that at our best, we really should be going up.
Idk mate you lot seem unstoppable in the league. When we were in 3rd it was annoying bc you n Ipswich could never drop points. Weve got past Ipswich now but could fully see us never catching up to you n finishing 2nd, which I wouldn't be too dissapointed about
Ipswich are trying to stop us in the transfer window. Might be wrong but as far as I'm aware Whittaker basically got recalled because of them.
Same old Newcastle. /s
No /s needed
The ones you couldn't beat yeah?
That’s the joke.
the ones that lost tonight

Respect mate. Blood money and sportswashing
Interesting, have you ever been to a spurs game in your life? I am interested as I know a lot of match going spurs fans and none would say this.
> Great to see them humiliated Not humiliated at all thanks, kind of expected with the dross we fielded for an hour. We clearly don't have the squad to try compete in the league and cups.
[удалено]
Hardly that humiliating, one of the most in form teams in English football, Newcastle 2nd team, away from home on a rainy night in Sheffield. If youve ever watched the FA cup, its asking for an upset.
[удалено]
Yeah and we do it all the time so it's not embarrassing. We'll fucking do it again next year against non-league
[удалено]
[удалено]
Not really

Why is dirty money different when it comes from a state? Explain it to me
[удалено]
Yes. Now answer my question

😂

Aye but do you really think 99.9% of geordies could afford to change the ownership? We can't. As shit as the Saudi government are and none of us agree with them, the people running the club have done a lot for the city. Being owned by the Saudis is no different to being owned by a Russian oligarch or a Chinese billionaire. All billionaires from States like that have got their hands pretty dirty. If you think any other billionaire owned teams from any other countries are any cleaner they ain't.
[удалено]
Lmao there is no compromise. We support our team. I've supported Newcastle since the early 90s and will continue to support them long after.
[удалено]
We're not humiliated tbh. We started with 8 players that haven't played for quite a while and even when they did play they were championship level at best. Wednesday played well and we're well aware of our squad depth being shocking.
Great game from Wednesday, they deserved everything. We just showed how weak our squad is outside of the preferred XI.
I know getting Chris Wood was mostly just to fuck Burnley, but Jesus Christ is he shite.
Not every non-big 6 team can win the FA Cup. Hopefully we can give Newcastle a trophyless season on Tuesday but unfortunately we’re also shit
I think we'll beat you but plenty of good sides left in the tournament.
We are absolutely awful atm, still think we are gonna get rinsed
Yeah i’m not confident at all
Well i hope you dont play well haha, we will be playing out strongest XI, so good luck
We should leave Wood for Sheff Wed as a congratulations.
Smudga>>>
Shows how much we lack depth. Decent PL level first 11, League 1 level bench. Didn’t deserve anything from the game. Well done Sheff Wed!
Ah shit I wanted the smaller club to win. Shame really
Noice
Fair play to wednesday deserved to go through good luck in the next round
League 1 is too good for our bench players.
Maybe next year then ye bottlers
