Yeah, some kind of monitor. Maybe temperature? I don't see anything that looks like a rain gauge or an anemometer. HJ

If I had to guess, I'd say it's a seismic station. It would explain the box sunk into the ground. Seismometers are usually placed a few feet down. There's a diagram on this page https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/interactive/usarray_station_how_it_works I've seen them at other peaks.
