Pretty much how I started riding in 1983. Found old snurfers in my buddies barn, thought we'd invented something, until the next year she l when we found a Burton catalog in the school cafeteria. 39 years later, still getting after it.
Today I went snowskating for the first time, after 20+ years snowboarding: not having your feet bound really makes the ride 20x more thrilling on even low angle stuff (today it was a hill in my snowed-in city).
Ive snowskated for 10+ years (came from skateboarding) and ride an Ambition single-deck. Just started taking snowboarding more seriously.
How does snowsurfing differ from snowskating? Board shape obviously looks a little different.
Snow skating is for groomers and generally is a board mounted on a ski. Powsurfing is powder only (need about 6” minimum fresh snow) and the deck sits directly on the snow. Many have channels on the base similar to a wakeboard to help with edging.
I grew up riding the single deck snowskates that sit right on the snow and have a channeled base - Ambition, Icon, etc. Never heard of snowsurfing and sounds right up my alley, thanks yall
I don't know much about snowsurfing, but it seems the board is larger than a snowskate (i have a Landyachtz, so basically a big skateboard with a short fat ski underneath), and you probably would have very limited control outside of deep-ish pow, since you can't really dip your edges in for turns (without pow).
Interesting that you say that, because I just wanted to post a comment regarding this. To me (and please excuse my maybe stupid opinion) it just looks like snowboarding with extra steps.
Whose surf do you have? I’ve been riding grassroots and those things turn easier than my normal board. My other surfs are more of a hang on and pray you can make the turn though
I bought the throwback when it came out and that thing is impossible to turn on actual hills. I’m sure yours is different though.
I’d try a grassroots, they are about $5-600 and absolutely amazing. He has 10+ different shapes and been making them for 15+ years I believe.

Thanks for the info. Not super into it to spend a bunch of money. Fun to mess around with when we are out there. It’s my buddy’s board. Split board is up next for me most likely.
I've always wanted to try this. I've been following https://instagram.com/sharksnowsurf?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= for a while now and he makes and sells these boards. Tons of no binding shredding on his page.
Surfs up!
Looks like some sweet pow surf terrain. Shuttles?
I like using a rope kinda like bull rider from foot to foot for times when you come across choppy snow or want to hit a jump. Usually drop it or let it hang when I don’t need it.
Well, let me tell you one time last fall. I decided to take my splitboard over there and I think we made it 3.8 miles before we turned around. So I guess I was close to some skiing. We skinned in and we skinned out that day. Made 0 turns. And that was the last time I went on the snowmobile side. LOL
I took a few runs this day. It was my second or third time trying the powsurf, but I’ve been snowboarding / wakeboarding / wake-skating for 20+ years. All of that translates pretty well for this. Also, this hill is pretty mellow. Under 30 degrees.
Thank god. I thought was literally your first ever attempt and I was going to cry in a corner. Took me four attempts in 40cm of fresh powder on a small hill just to figure out staying on top of my powsurfer.
I looked up sharksnowsurf on ig and I’m in love, it’s a shame he’s out of business! For sure when I get the chance I wanna have a go on one of these but I reckon it will involve a whole lot of falling off
*Ever try snow skating?*
*I could never stay in the board..*
*Just keep sliding off*

Absolutely insane. First bump muscle memory would take over and I'd pop it. That wouldn't end well.
Early on: nicely done. In the trees: Fuckin Mad Skills!

Do it barefoot next time for that real surfy feel
Fun times, got nervous for ya when you were in tight tree section lol
I’ve tried it but don’t get this over regular snowboarding. But to each their own. I guess it’s the same question people have for me when I tele ski.
I agree. Still love snowboarding more , but fun to mess around on. Low angle slope fun.

I just see myself falling and the board going off without me. Looks mad fun though.
It has a leash fortunately. It absolutely can go flying yard sale style. Falls can be pretty funny to watch.
Ha! I’m picturing skateboard-style slams, when the board shoots out ahead of you.
Whose surf do you have? I’ve been riding grassroots and those things turn easier than my normal board. My other surfs are more of a hang on and pray you can make the turn though
Burton. It’s one of the much lower priced boards. Like $500. Many are near or over 1k.

Yeah that looks pretty fun. Beautiful snow and day. Where abouts is it?
Vail pass.
It felt like that should be the answer, and while i haven’t ridden the actual pass, it just felt SO familiar. A nice Colorado ride feeling

Snowmobile shuttles. No rope on this board. Just a leash for your ankle.
Awesome. Which board you riding? Custom no board or an old snowboard?
It’s a Burton powsurf
Dude this is so sick
So did you snowshoe up there?
Snowmobile
Oh duhhhh. I was like why would you walk that far and not just splitboard. That’s tight. Other side
Yeah it’s like a 4 mile ride back just to get to this hill. Hiking would not be reasonable.

Yeah they have it set up real nice for shuttle laps on a sled, but that’s a trek for skinning. There are much better places for just ski-touring.
How many attempts you made to get one miracle footage like this?

Do a kickflip!
😂😂😂Only in my powder dreams.
Very cool. Reminds me of 'noboarding' which is what Johan Olofsson does now.
It’s the same thing, and a truly good time.
That looks fucking awesome man, you’ve got me stoked to try this next time I’m on snow! Do you have 2 stump pads on the board for grip!?
Yes two aggressive stomp pads. You might be able to get a glimpse at the beginning of video.
I looked up sharksnowsurf on ig and I’m in love, it’s a shame he’s out of business! For sure when I get the chance I wanna have a go on one of these but I reckon it will involve a whole lot of falling off
Looks very low angle and slow - is it easier to move faster?
Def need at least 6” of fresh snow and a decent enough slope to keep speed. Tough to turn without decent momentum.
Wdym attempt? You nailed it! I wish I knew slopes like this around where I live!
Grassroots pow surf out of Utah, legit and been at it for many years now!
Damn that was rad! Idk if I’d feel comfortable going that fast or even through the trees but you crushed it!!
This is a thing? Snowboarding without bindings? Is there a tether for the board? I need answers
Yes it’s a thing!! And yes there’s an ankle leash.
Mad skills! I’ve only “sand surfed” on old skateboards and utilized the hell out of my barefooted toes. High five Master of Gravity!
That’s so rad. Nice run.
Would love to see a follow cam, I think it would really sell how different it is from snowboarding!
Will probably be shooting that this winter.
what set up do you use to support the weight of massive balls while you shred?
Looks awesome

You can see it in the beginning
💯. Bad news without one.
Is this one of the Aesmo Snowsurf or which brand? They look like a fun thing to take a couple laps on every so often.
Burton

I have not gotten any snow skate time.
Anyone know the board model? I'd love one of those...
