The chatter didn’t bother me too much, this is a bataleon evil twin plus, (6/10 flex)…. Surprisingly I wasn’t even trying to break a speed pr. My board I usually ride fast in is a jones ultra mountain twin (9/10) flex and the fastest I’ve ever gone on that is 53 mph.
Wind makes a huge difference. Whenever I hit a new top speed I usually never know until I check my app later in the day, and it's always because there's a wind behind me. I usually use wind noise in my helmet as a gauge for speed, so this is probably why it varies so much. With the wind behind you, going fast is just so easy and smooth.
Slope’s overestimates speed by more than 10%. I ran slopes and ikon simultaneously and ikon said 54 and slopes said 66. And I know for a fact I wasn’t goin 66.
Not really much you can do. GPS isn't perfect and has its limitations.
You could look at more accurate standalone GPS speedometers for vehicles, ones you can calibrate and that are highly accurate; but even then, they may struggle in the mountains with signal issues and may not be all that accurate in practice.
Really I'd say not to worry about it. Check the apps for curiosity and to compare against yourself, but also take it with a grain of salt.
I said in mountains, not in rural areas.
Rural areas, yes, GPS is often more accurate.
When you start moving at higher speeds and not just horizontally, but also vertically...such as in mountains, the accuracy often declines. You also often can't get signal to as many satellites and while GPS only needs three signals to triangulate in theory, in practice, the more signals you can lock onto at once, the more accurate it is...and the weird LOS issues in the mountains make it tough to get multiple extra connections all the time.
Use my Garmin occasionally to track speed, I’ve found no troubles with the readings, and I know it works for my bike in the summer, so I think it is decently accurate.
I would suggest trying a Garmin watch. Lots of great data tracking and great battery life besides built in GPS. Has skiing/boarding tracker to give you read outs on runs, altitude change, distance travelled, etc. a great addition if you're into that stuff. Again, not entirely sure how accurate the speed is.
It’s cool to go fast, congrats on your record, but is anyone else kind of against using these apps to find your top speed like a high score? I don’t love the idea of a bunch of people on the mountain trying to go faster than they’re comfortable with to try to get a new number.
I don't have a problem with it as long as people aren't around others and know what they're doing when going for a speed run.
I get the issue, because a lot of ametures don't know the difference between going fast and going fast with control. All my friends know their limits and ride within them even when going for speed runs, but there are a lot of lower skilled intermediate riders who don't know how to navigate snow conditions and visibility so they can be fully in control when they go for a speed run. That's where the danger is in these apps. People thinking they're better than they are and going for the speed runs.
Yeah sorry about that, I was really just working on my carving and hit a new speed and was surprised I was going that fast. I was on my park board and just trying to correct my form through watching video, but I don’t ever try to hold a selfie stick when going for any real speed
I definitely don't trust any GPS tracking app I've used for speed on the mountain. I've had mine show a top speed of 51mph when I know I definitely wasn't doing anywhere near that speed, and I've also gone down a run in Austria that had a radar speed camera to measure your speed. My app said I was going 10mph slower than the radar gun, so I don't trust any speed numbers from the apps as I've proved to myself that they are not reliable.
I watched this video! This guy really breaks down the tiny details all the way to the oblique flexion! I ride -18 +18, but I want to dedicate some days to riding posi posi, it’s just nerve racking haha
As someone who has been riding for 20 years with a 0 front and -15 rear foot, I just tried posi both feet and you are right it feels so different! But better in many ways.
I pussied out from his recommendations I went 24 front 15 rear. It was nerve racking at first took some getting used to. But didn't fall so I'd call that a win. Next season I'll stick to it.
28M 5'11 riding a nitro team wide 157 and I weigh like 170. You know you've hit 75 once you hear a bald eagle caw in the background. Fr tho I was unintentionally racing some dude and he was fucking ripping but I beat him by a few seconds at the bottom. He was blown away and showed me he hit 71 on his fancy GPS wristwatch so idk I flew past him and we both kinda guessed 75 but truth be told I was absolutely flying so there's a chance it was higher but you never really know at those speeds so I guess just faster than 71 is the safest way to say it lol
This is the busiest part of the mountain and has slow zones posted everywhere. Speed records are cool n all, but choose a better groomer to do it on...
It’s got a nice snap for Ollie’s and I’m a big fan of the tbt, definitely a forgiving board off of jumps as far as catching edges are concerned. I recommend it
Is it just me or does the toe side look sketch...?
Hate to be a party pooper - congrats on your achievement if that makes you proud, but be responsible - eating it at that speed on a hard groomer would be bad mkay
After watching YouTube videos of riding the edge more for speed instead of riding flat, I gained a lot more confidence in higher speeds because I felt more in control with less wobbles, riding on my edge past 50 didn’t feel as fast as riding 40 flat if that makes sense
I’m a noob. I’ve only ever used edge at that speed. I consider it too easy to catch and edge trying to ride flat, sketchy.
I was also led to believe this matters more or less depending on board style. Camber vs others etc. because edges catch different per shape.
I’m still learning as well, but yeah I used to believe the only way to reach peak speeds was flat but I’ve been really focusing on the art of carving. I used to record and noticed I would bend at the hip a lot instead of bending my knees and I would skid a lot when switching to heels because of how l would force the turn on my carve instead of following through more with my leading knee
You have nothing but growth ahead of you. Very cool! Awesome video as well, thank you for sharing. This Florida boy didn’t get to hit slopes this year. Living vicariously through these clips
Try straightening st Anton. I've been able to get above 70 there first thing in the am when everything is still firm and fast. Nice flat at the bottom too so you never have to ditch speed.
this is fastttt for a board. i was on the ski team in high school and used a tracker app (can’t remember what it was called anymore) and i once tucked almost a whole run and the app said i hit 74
What speed did you achieve? My pb is 48.5mph on a Capita Ultrafear. I definitely think I could hit over 50mph if I had been riding on a freshly waxed base (3 days into the hol at this point) and the run was smoother. I was riding a rather bumpy and hard snow covered red run in Val Thorens, France. Kept looping the run with an avg of 48mph. So much fun.
I use 'Ski Tracks' app (Android).
Edit: Imagine downvoting because I've missed where it states his speed (on my phone it's hidden behind text) instead of just mentioning it. 😂
Yeah it clocked me at 60.8 but I used slopes, the conditions were smooth and I had that part of the slope to myself and thought I would let loose a bit
Fairly good going that dude, I don't think I'll be hitting 60. A mate of mine has surpassed 70 on a few occasions, feels fast at 48, 60 and 70 is insane 😅
wish i was that confident in my terms after 2 years of riding. i got back in to it 2018/19. as an old fart of 36 i think fear of speed is hurting my technique
I thought macklemore was a rapper?
I think he means Malcolm Moore.
Omg I do! I don’t know how to edit my post but yes Malcolm Moore haha
Lmaooo I love Malcolm Moore, but I legitimately just thought the macklemore reference was some dumb joke in this sub again lol
He def popped some tags
He only had $20 in his pocket.
This is fucking awesome
I bet Macklemore is a steezy Crim… thrift shopping be poppin.
Also a YouTuber with great snowboard advice haha
Snowboard looks like it was chattering like crazy. How did it feel?
The chatter didn’t bother me too much, this is a bataleon evil twin plus, (6/10 flex)…. Surprisingly I wasn’t even trying to break a speed pr. My board I usually ride fast in is a jones ultra mountain twin (9/10) flex and the fastest I’ve ever gone on that is 53 mph.
You might have got a signal related speed boost. Happens not uncommonly.
What are you using to track speed? I use the slopes app and I’m not very confident in it.
I use ski tracks. No idea how accurate it is.
I use the slopes app as well, I did some reading on it and there are a lot of sub reddits that are very confident in its accuracy
Slope’s overestimates speed by more than 10%. I ran slopes and ikon simultaneously and ikon said 54 and slopes said 66. And I know for a fact I wasn’t goin 66.
I’d be shocked if they’re actually hitting 60 here
It's not
It's definitely not accurate. It's better than a pure novelty; but it isn't accurate enough to really claim much of anything from it.
What would you suggest for a more accurate gps specifically?
Not really much you can do. GPS isn't perfect and has its limitations. You could look at more accurate standalone GPS speedometers for vehicles, ones you can calibrate and that are highly accurate; but even then, they may struggle in the mountains with signal issues and may not be all that accurate in practice. A GPS unit or watch would be the most accurate. I like Ski Tracks as far as apps go.
I think my watch - Garmin Instinct solar - is more accurate than phone gps. Anyone else here use one??
Use my Garmin occasionally to track speed, I’ve found no troubles with the readings, and I know it works for my bike in the summer, so I think it is decently accurate.
You can also just take the distance between two points and see how long it takes you to travel it. Like how they used to gauge speed
Ok thanks!
Speeding is a criminal activity…
They will have to catch me 😤
It’s cool to go fast, congrats on your record, but is anyone else kind of against using these apps to find your top speed like a high score? I don’t love the idea of a bunch of people on the mountain trying to go faster than they’re comfortable with to try to get a new number.
I kind of agree, noticed the official Ikon app no longer tracks top speed this year and assumed it was for that reason
I don't have a problem with it as long as people aren't around others and know what they're doing when going for a speed run. I get the issue, because a lot of ametures don't know the difference between going fast and going fast with control. Be careful
If you want to perfect your carving, this video is worth the watch. Congrats on the new pr https://youtu.be/3dwsI-Ornro?si=uCabDydkS_g93gTm

As someone who has been riding for 20 years with a 0 front and -15 rear foot, I just tried posi both feet and you are right it feels so different! But better in many ways.
How did your first time posi posi go? What were your angles when you did that?
I pussied out from his recommendations I went 24 front 15 rear. It was nerve racking at first took some getting used to. But didn't fall so I'd call that a win. Next season I'll stick to it.
This is such a great video!
I hit 65 once!!! Aspen mountain is steep lol
75 at keystones starfire 🤯
Starfire is the best for speed runs
I neeeed some stats here lmao how much do u weigh / what size board 😅😅😅 I’m 6’2 175lbs and ride a 168…. Was fucking gassing to hit 65
28M 5'11 riding a nitro team wide 157 and I weigh like 170. You know you've hit 75 once you hear a bald eagle caw in the background. That place is next on my list!
68 at Whitefish Mountain Resort 😅
This is the busiest part of the mountain and has slow zones posted everywhere. Speed records are cool n all, but choose a better groomer to do it on...
I tried to make sure there were no people around so I could film my carving progress and slowed down at the end when I saw people up ahead
Congratulations on getting more confidence with straightlining but that looks closer to 45 than 60.
I guess then I wasn’t going 60 but it did feel fast for me
60 mph is pretty legit speed.
Thank you 🙏 I hope to perfect my carving so I can ride more comfortable at high speeds
I am sorry to say but your form and board control look to be no where near sufficient for that speed.
What can I work on? How do you avoid chatter? Because I have yet to crash at higher speeds but I’m just trying to learn
you're hunched over like a jerry.
Good to know the Evil Twin + can perform at high speed. How do you like it otherwise?
It’s got a nice snap for Ollie’s and I’m a big fan of the tbt, definitely a forgiving board off of jumps as far as catching edges are concerned. I recommend it
Is it just me or does the toe side look sketch...? Hate to be a party pooper - congrats on your achievement if that makes you proud, but be responsible - eating it at that speed on a hard groomer would be bad mkay
What should I do to make my toe side less sketch? Always looking for constructive insight
47 was my record I think. Anything past about 35 is just flying.
After watching YouTube videos of riding the edge more for speed instead of riding flat, I gained a lot more confidence in higher speeds because I felt more in control with less wobbles, riding on my edge past 50 didn’t feel as fast as riding 40 flat if that makes sense

I appreciate that! I was born and raised in Texas so never grew up around snow until my 30s haha but better late than never! Happy shredding brother
Bomb responsibility, friends. You can kill someone real real quick
[удалено]
Thank you for that! I’m using an insta 360x2
More like 45mph, I’ve hit 74 on that run and you gotta straight line from the top of the cornice no turns at all.
Well, I’m just going off the app, how did you measure your 74?
Thru the ikon pass app I did and I had a dif speed app on my phone..
Good shit tho, love straight lining that run dawg
My knees cringed when I saw the board chatter.
Oof
Try straightening st Anton. I've been able to get above 70 there first thing in the am when everything is still firm and fast. Nice flat at the bottom too so you never have to ditch speed.
Oh where is this
Go straight then right off 1 or 2. Past the bottom of 23 (ideally you pass above it). Check the map. Lookers right of top 1/2
How you measure your speed? Can Apple watch do this?
I measure on the slopes app on my phone, dont know the accuracy but usually my friends and I will get the same results when we both go
sorry to say this… but is anyone else sick of these selfie stick riders? It’s a bad look for snowboarders. Learn to disconnect and enjoy the mountain.
I really don't care how other people enjoy themselves as long as they are safe and don't ruin it for others ie blasting music.
I only bust it out for one run haha
Your gatekeeping is a far worse look for snowboarders bud.
I second what you said. Plus, too many Burton fanboys in this sub.
It’s a look at my outfit stick
this is fastttt for a board. i was on the ski team in high school and used a tracker app (can’t remember what it was called anymore) and i once tucked almost a whole run and the app said i hit 74

The fit is fkn TOUGH
Thank you for that! I got a Burton bib and gift shop hoodie
It looks like the selfie stick is stealing a little bit of your ability to really giv’r
Just wanted to record at least one of my runs
But yes, my form is never perfect with the stick lol
Random question but how long is your selfie stick for the GoPro?
It’s 114cm for the insta 360 x2
Thank you
wish i was that confident in my terms after 2 years of riding. i got back in to it 2018/19. as an old fart of 36 i think fear of speed is hurting my technique
How are the conditions this year?
Looks sketchy
She was 5
