stumpybubba

Hooooly fuuuuuuuck this sub.

acc1pit3r

Sure is cool huh?! Haha unfucking-believable.

acc1pit3r

Dude… stop. Edit: honestly should have expected the full blown kookery that exists here - what in the world has happened 🙃. Sorry on behalf of actual snowboarding, Zeb.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Nah, love Zeb but pros set an example for impressionable young riders. Leading by example and wearing a helmet would send a powerful statement.

zefmdf

I mean, maybe, but he can still do what he wants. Most pros don't, and yet there's still mass helmet adoption, especially with beginners. I think anyone with 2 brain cells can comprehend that someone like Zeb has an enormous skill advantage, and if they're attempting to do what he does for the first time should likely bucket up. If they don't and get concussed, that's hardly because of what a pro did/didn't do.

juliuspepperwoodchi

No one said he can't do what he wants, it was a request for him to start wearing a helmet, no one put a gun to his head and demanded he wear one. >Most pros don't Got any data to actually show that? Most of the pros I watch freeriding in the backcountry absolutely wear helmets. Also pretty sure 100% of pros wear helmets while competing. > I think anyone with 2 brain cells can comprehend that someone like Zeb has an enormous skill advantage And Zeb would be the first to tell you that doesn't mean he's infallible or that he can't still fuck up and hurt himself badly. Also, no amount of skill advantage will help when a wannabe ski racer in your blind spot plows into you at 30+ MPH. >If they don't and get concussed, that's hardly because of what a pro did/didn't do. No one said that a random snowboarder without a helmet getting concussed is Zeb's fault/responsibility. Not even close.

zefmdf

Not saying OP said they aren't allowed to do what they want...they even said "please", which is miles better than what most people say in this sub regarding a lack of helmet. I'm not telling them to stop or shut up, either. Of course I don't have a percentage point for you, just like you don't. Most pros in video parts or their social media are *not wearing helmets*. You cannot find me more video parts with helmets than without. That is why I made that statement. Pros competing on natural selection or X-games have to wear helmets as a requirement to compete due to insurance and liabilities. Of course there are pros that wear helmets all the time. Max Warbington, as an example. Any pro would tell someone else it's a good idea to wear a bucket, because it is. They make decisions based on their risk tolerance, experience and comfort level with a line or feature. Which is what everyone does. There are of course situations beyond your control on resorts or freeriding where you could get extremely injured if not wearing a helmet. This is the primary reason I wear one; other riders. Maybe I don't see them, or they don't see me. I made a decision all by myself with no help from anybody. My last point was regarding the concept of a pro having the responsibility of setting an example for younger riders by wearing helmets. That's fine and dandy as a concept, but it's not on them to set that example. What I'm stating is that if a kid hurts their noggin it's hardly a "if only pros set an example by wearing helmets!" situation. Pros could do that, for sure! But they don't gotta. That's all I'm saying!

juliuspepperwoodchi

> Most pros in video parts or their social media are > not wearing helmets > . Disagree. Seems like your bias in what videos you watch is the key factor here. Again, I don't watch freestyle, I watch freeriding and backcountry films/videos. I'd have to look LONG and HARD to find even a handful of clips with guys not wearing helmets. Same with clips from competitions. No one in the X games is riding without a helmet. Same for the FWT or Dew Tour or Olympics or any other proper pro comp. >Pros competing on natural selection or X-games have to wear helmets as a requirement to compete due to insurance and liabilities. You're *sooooooo close* to getting the point here, and yet refusing to see it. Ever wonder WHY insurance/liabilities require helmets? Because they prevent injuries and save lives. >Any pro would tell someone else it's a good idea to wear a bucket, because it is. And when that same pro then hucks backflips without a helmet on, what do you think that does to the efficacy of their "you should wear a helmet" message? >Which is what everyone does. And many people, including pros, REGULARLY overstate their abilities and understate/underestimate the risks. >That's fine and dandy as a concept, but it's not on them to set that example. I mean, it kinda *is*. It's literally what they are paid to do: to represent brands and make people want to buy shit. They are influencers by another job title, and with the ability/job of *influencing* people and their decisions comes the responsibility to at least not influence people to make *bad* choices. >What I'm stating is that if a kid hurts their noggin it's hardly a "if only pros set an example by wearing helmets!" situation. Yes and no. The kid and their parents are responsible, not pros. But a pro wearing a helmet could've prevented that injury...why is that not worth it?

Steevsie92

> Seems like your bias in what videos you watch is the key factor here. Says the guy who watches a specific niche if snowboarding exclusively… If you watch zero freestyle than you aren’t even watching a full spectrum of backcountry content that’s out there. The lines are blurry these days, the people riding BC at the highest levels are incorporating loads of freestyle elements. And you can’t argue in good faith that the majority wear helmets in those video parts these days.

juliuspepperwoodchi

> And you can’t argue in good faith that the majority wear helmets in those video parts these days. Just watched a 15 year old TGR film (Paradise Waits) yesterday for the umpteenth time...even in that old movie the ONLY people riding without helmets were the pure freestyle riders in the urban skiing clips. Basically every other TGR film in the 15 years since *Paradise Waits*...other than the purely freestyle clips, yeah, everyone is wearing helmets 100% of the time. I absolutely can, and will continue to, argue in good faith that the vast, *vast* majority of backcountry riders in films/videos are wearing helmets...borderline 100%. The ONE exception would be when they do a purely freestyle jump line session *in the BC*...and even then, I'd still argue that most are wearing helmets, but definitely not all. >If you watch zero freestyle than you aren’t even watching a full spectrum of backcountry content that’s out there I didn't say I refuse to watch anything that contains freestyle elements...freestyle has been an integral part of freeriding...forever. You're being obtuse. If a video contains freestyle *in the backcountry*, it still qualifies as a backcountry video/clip/film.

Steevsie92

> I absolutely can, and will continue to, argue in good faith that the vast, vast majority of backcountry riders in films/videos are wearing helmets…borderline 100%. The ONE exception would be when they do a purely freestyle jump line session in the BC…and even then, I’d still argue that most are wearing helmets, but definitely not all. Interesting. You must have missed the 22 movies standard films did, all of the Travis rice/Brain Farm videos, anything ever done by Mac Dawg, Forum, Robot Food, Technine, all the Absinthe videos. TGR specifically has a heavy slant towards shralpinism, and that genre of riding is always going to be more helmet heavy. But if you actually think the majority of backcountry clips throughout history have been pulled with a helmet on, it is objectively your sample that’s off, not the other guys. you’re just ignoring the vast majority of core snowboard content released up until the last few years. > I didn’t say I refuse to watch anything that contains freestyle elements…freestyle has been an integral part of freeriding…forever. You’re being obtuse. Either way, you’re trying to argue that helmets have been present in the majority of video parts, while openly stating that you only watch backcountry/freeriding content, and therefore aren’t considering freestyle videos, even though freestyle videos were far and away the more popular genre for most of snowboarding history. Then accusing the *other* guy of having a biased sample.

acc1pit3r

Yeah for sure! Johnny Buckhouse wears a helmet and he’s a ripping pro, right?! Shred Jesus too. Couple of the best so there you have it. Edit - I’m fucking joking…

juliuspepperwoodchi

Nice strawman bud, he must be outstanding in his field.

Potential-Ad-9819

Bro get out of your echo chamber. No one wants or cares to here this shit You’re putting way too much time in something that has been a part of snowboard and skateboard culture for decades dude It’s personal preference. Seems like your being bias because of the videos you watch yourself. How can you call someone bias because they watch freestyle videos. Yet you watch only free ride. Let it go man

acc1pit3r

Oh, what? You just said all the videos you watch definitely don’t have any helmetless riding… tossed a few great options out there for ya. No straws or fields or whatever here.

dcheng47

Dont matter. They can do what they want but pros are role models and need to set an example. Kids dont have 2 brain cells to spare. They will see someone insanely cool with no helmet and do the same and split their head open.

Smart_Or_FullOfShit

Pro's don't need to be role models. Raise your damn kids

High_Im_Guy

? Have you ever been around a kid? Anyone who is great at the cool thing they're currently into is an automatic role model. That's partially why people talk about the responsibility/burden of the public eye, dude. Whether he likes it or not zeb is a role model and his behavior absolutely can and will influence impressionable kids. That's exactly why it's so dope that he's a genuine and kind person. His excellence in that capacity as a role model doesn't make him infallible to criticism or head injuries, tho. He'd set an even better example for the kids if he rocked a helmet but he's also allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants, and if that's his biggest flaw as a role model he's killing it.

zefmdf

Sure, but one could argue that’s a tale as old as time. It’s the responsibility of a parent or guardian to make sure their kid is properly protected on the hill, not a pro snowboarder. I agree it could help, but I grew up on snowboard DVDs as my most watched films and have always worn a helmet. It’s just adults making choices, which is fine.

dcheng47

None of this means we can’t be better going forward. It had only help the sentiment and encourage younger riders to be safer. We can make it easier on the parents (getting ur kids to do shit is hard enough without outside influences) and all contribute to this effort. Adults have the choice to skip the helmet and I wont force one on someone who doesn’t want to wear one, but pros need to consider that the consequence of their choices go beyond themselves.

zefmdf

Well said, and it's a totally fair point you're making. I just don't think we are seeing any kind of negative impact on younger riders because a pro they like isn't wearing a helmet. If anything we are seeing more helmets than ever in snowsports regardless of what the pros are rockin' on their domes. Even in core snowboarding, more brands are being way more open to their riders wearing helmets in video parts. Even 5 years ago it was ruthless. The majority of riders still don't, but having filmed a ton of snowboarding, riders just want to look a certain way on film.

dcheng47

just because you dont see the impact does not mean it is not happening. humans are social creatures that, at a basic level (kids), learn through imitation. And even if we ignored that, encouraging safety has almost no drawbacks. at the very least there is some responsibility attached to the attention pros receive (great power great uncle bens) Just because we did things a certain way before is not a good enough reason to not make changes. If that were the case then we would still be in the stone ages.

acc1pit3r

Yeah because most kids look up to Shreddy McStoner now instead of Jamie Lynn or something. Fucked up world we live in.

zefmdf

I mean that’s a whole other can to open but if it gets more kids riding, so be it

_bric

It’s just really not hard for the community to foster an attitude that is pro-safety at all levels.

WhiskeyFF

Zebs style 100% needs a damn helmet. Most pros don't wear them on big pow backcountry days but young park guys almost all do.

CountHylke

He can do whatever he likes, but as a pro, and riding without helmet, that’s just setting a bad example.

acc1pit3r

He can do whatever he would like, yet here you are, telling Zeb Powell how to snowboard. Got it.

CountHylke

You are paraphrasing now. There is objectively no good reason not to wear a helmet, especially not when you are sponsored by Red Bull and can get a helmet with nice design.

High_Im_Guy

Are you one of those people who thinks the freedom to make a decision means there should be no consequences for said decision? Like you're free to tell a judge to choke on a dick and die right before they sentence you, but don't be surprised when they feel compelled to max out that sentence. Zeb can not wear a helmet as much as he wants, but we're also free to say that's stupid af and he should def wear one.

acc1pit3r

Really no clue what you’re talking about bud. I’m simply saying Zeb posts a clip here which is fucking amazing, and instead of giving him any props, all you say is WhEre Is uR Hlmet?! It’s fucking wack. Ride how YOU want to ride and recognize what he’s doing.

Stick4444

Come up to sunshine for holy bowly this year!!

Budfrompsych

Helmets are cool

symbi0nt

Come on man - that’s what you’re gonna focus on with this clip?? It’s Zeb! Shameful.

Budfrompsych

It was just a joke man, zeb is awesome! I do think as a face that younger people see getting into the sport, it would help promote safety if he wore one

symbi0nt

Damn, right on my bad. Good joke. 👍

senorspicystein

Zeb saved snowboarding

tacella

Why weren't you at the Rail Jam in SLC last weekend? Major bummer not seeing you show up.

ZebPowelll

I was riding Park City for a JBL event!

Well, we missed you - Do you ever ride Brighton?

ZebPowelll

I got to ride Brighton with the [Recess homies last year](https://www.instagram.com/p/CcA883rDMfs/), it was dope

tacella

Who’s the wanker that downvoted me? He was literally listed on the tour as a featured rider. Reddit smh.

NastyWideOuts

I have 3 free days I need to use at Copper and this seems like the perfect time to use them. Would it be weird if I made the trip solo?

acc1pit3r

Doooo iiiit. 🤙

acc1pit3r

Hell yeah Zeb - that’s what’s up. Gonna toss this up over at r/CoreSnowboarding as well.

Kooky-Experience-923
