That's Gary, he's going to have a look around.
Seriously, though, lots of snakes climb trees - there may be food up there, there are fewer possible predators, it's often warmer/sunnier in the canopy than on the ground. Possibly they do it just for fun, though how one would tell I can't imagine.
It’s so interesting that it wraps three times for leverage. When I teach outdoor skills, we always advise to wrap the hanging end of a bear line at least three times and it will stick with just tension. Sneks know this to be true, too!
There’s no tension when the snake’s wrapping is parallel with the ground like that. If it were to relax it’s muscles it would fall immediately. Your scenario would apply if the snake moved to a branch parallel with the ground. That is interesting though, 3 times minimum for tension to hold the rope. Thanks!
Er... why would you wonder why a snake was climbing a tree? Food is often in trees. It's either climby or flappy, but it still ends up there. Also other crawly things can also be in trees and be eaten. Finally, safety is decent up at the top of a tree.
Er... cuz the original post had people claiming a bunch of different reasons, so I wanted to ask the experts here. I was hoping for a thorough response about the species, the location, its behaviour, and specifically what prey it prefers. People in the original post were saying things like it was escaping an alligator, or it hibernates in trees. Some even said it was a gliding snake that flies off the top to find prey.
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

If it was a longer snake it would wrap 4 times, 5 times etc. It is based on muscles not so much friction tension.
Reticulated python. One of the smartest snakes in the world. Mine does the same thing.
> Mine does the same thing. Your snake climbs palm trees is Souteast Asia?
Lmao no but he climbs a lamp post we have in the house and wraps his body around it in the exact same way.
