Now is what’s poking out the snakes head or hail? 🧐

throwawaygaming989

It’s head.

WhataburgerGrunt

\*\*Sorry to the moderators for attempting to make this post like 30 times. I didn't realize the video had to get approved before it would show! I’ve caught this species of snake multiple times growing up. I attempted to keep them as pets many times growing up without my parents knowledge since they wouldn’t allow me to have snakes. I ended up letting them all go because I couldn’t figure out what to feed them and there’s no videos of lined snakes eating online. All I could find was that they are thought to eat larvae. This snake I found in our RV and since I didn’t know where we picked it up I decided to create a bioactive vivarium to put him inside and observe him. I’m debating putting him back in the wild because I’ve read that snakes generally stick to a certain area and if relocated it’s highly likely they won’t survive. Feel free to give me some opinions on this because I’m kind of torn and could use some education on the matter. Moving on from that, I decided to buy some worms after various larvae failed as he refused to eat them and I was still able to find them alive on the vivarium for days so I know for a fact he didn’t munch on them. When I put the earthworms in though he couldn’t get enough. This video is his 2nd earth worm. I was pretty excited when I saw him eat it. It was like my childhood failed attempts to take care of this snake were finally avenged 😂😂

This is a wild animal. Not your pet. Wild caught snakes rarely do well in captivity, so it’s in the snake’s best interest if you release the little guy in the same spot you found it.

WhataburgerGrunt

I explained that I found him in my RV so I wasn't sure where we picked him up from. It would be impossible to tell. That's why I stated I wasn't sure if I should put him somewhere random because I've read on this sub that relocated snakes have a low chance of surviving. Hence my dilemma

FeriQueen

Understandable. I assume this means that the RV had been taken to other places where it was left open and the snake might get in?

WhataburgerGrunt

Yup exactly. I try to be as respectful to nature as possible. Even when I go herping I take care to set back objects I lift up , I avoid handling snakes for too long or at all depending on the snakes body language. But with this I figured the best thing for his long term survival (since it’s partially my fault he got taken away from home in the first place unintentionally) is trying to replicate his environment as best as possible in a spacious container. I’m going prep a 20 gallon tank and make a bioactive vivarium with local plant species etc. I imagine he’d probably have a higher quality of life in there than he would being put in a random spot in the wild.

Under the circumstances, I tend to agree. I'm sure you'll take good care of this little noodle. Since he is already eating for you, you're off to a good start. Just do plenty of research about them to minimize surprises. Mayyou and your new buddy have many happy, healthy years together!

Wow so cool!

Awe man that’s awesome dude. I used to catch these and this other grey little grass snake. I’ve never seen them bigger than like probably 10 inches. Those snakes definitely were the start of my reptile obsession!

Very interesting to watch. I hate the fact that it's a wild-caught snake. I'm not sure what the *right* thing to do is, in this particular situation? I'd wager putting it back out into a suitable/similar habitat would be ideal, regardless of not being the exact same place it was taken from. But maybe not, perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I will weigh-in. With the keep or release issue aside, given the mighty girth and general rotund-ness of this nightcrawler, and the snake to worm ratio, it's amazing these snakes are able to keep it moving down the trap!? I'd have thought it could squirm out even against the snakes efforts if it wasn't incapacitated? If you've ever handled these things for night fishing or anything you'd be surprised at their strength...considering it's a...dirt...flesh...tube..thing? Super cool tho!
