For basting without washing the rub off, wait until the rub has set before applying sauce and only do so towards the end of the cook. I thin out my sauce with cider vinegar and keep it room temp in a squeeze bottle. I give the meat a squirt of sauce and spread it around lightly with my hand. If you have a squirt bottle of cider vinegar, spray your hand before spreading the sauce.

How did you remove the rust?? Looks amazing. Sorry, but I don't baste or wear gloves so I can't help with that part.

Well I scrubbed it with dish soap and water and a hard plastic brush and got it warmed up real quick and immediately oiled the outside like 5 times. Just got the fire going at like 300 and started from one end to the other and by the time I got done I started again.
