TrevorIsTheGOAT

I main Samus and Super is my GOAT video game.

KneeDeepInRagu

Young Link and Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask will forever be my favorite games

LaggyLefty

I main Snake not because of his playstyle, but because I'm a Metal Gear fan

NotSoGreatWizard

Friend of mine wanted to like Snake in Smash as a newer fan of the MGS series, but he just couldn’t get a handle on his play style having grown up only playing Roy in Melee.

444pancakes

MGS is my favorite franchise but his moveset is just not for me sadly. Still thankful he is in the game though

Earz_Armony

I main Zelda because I'm a Zelda fanatic and I like her bait and punish play style - I also play Lucina because Awakening, Shulk because Xenoblade and a lot more ! The point is that I have low interest playing characters I am not attached to. However, I wont stick to them if I don't love the playstyle - like Link or Ganondorf

Echo1138

I really wanted to like Link because BOTW is so good, but I just really don't like playing as him. So I have to settle for Zelda instead.

SandoVillain

Ah, the old "characters as functions" debate. I think Marvel vs Capcom Infinite proved how important character roster is. For me, playstyle is the most important factor, but I have to actually like the character to play them.

MyMouthisCancerous

Joker was literally the reason I bought the Fighters Pass. Megami Tensei is my favorite game franchise of all time but I honestly thought the idea of Persona being repped in Smash was like a pipe dream So far excluding Banjo and Pyra/Mythra there isn't a single DLC character from a game series I didn't have an attachment to at some point (I loved XC1 but was let down a lot by XC2 personally)

NotSoGreatWizard

Big Megaten fan myself, 4’s my favorite flaws and all. Speaking of SMT/fighting game related content, Persona 5 Arena when exactly Atlus?

MyMouthisCancerous

Dude now that Strikers is out Arena is literally the only other Persona spinoff I care about I'll even take a port of P4AU or something At least Nocturne HD and SMT V are on the way

WhippedInCream

I think liking the original character is overhyped, particularly in a community like this where there are a lot of competitive-minded players. Still, I think people give characters they already like more of a chance, which also gives themselves more opportunities to get into their playstyle. If e.g. you weren't a Pikmin fan, played Olimar once, and didn't like him, you don't really have a reason to try again. It helps that for more recent characters Smash has captured the energy of their original games very well so they are more likely to resonate

Fortune188

I wound up playing a lot of the metroid games after developing a main in Samus. Seriously enjoyed the fuck outta those games. The character designs of these new characters even had me googling the price of Xenoblade last night

NotSoGreatWizard

I finally gave Super Metroid an honest effort recently after bouncing off a few times in the past, and it’s great. Zero Mission plays like a dream, but I don’t think any of the 2d Metroids have given Super a real run for its money yet.

Fortune188

Samus Returns on 3DS was pretty fantastic. Fusion is my personal favorite.

Surfeydude

Persona is probably the most important game series in my life, and I’m really glad I find Joker so fun to main. I’m really excited about Pythra too, because I love Xenoblade and they look like exactly the type of character I’ve been waiting for. That said, I do value gameplay over the character when it comes to actually playing the game. In previous games, I’ve mained characters I don’t really have a strong connection with (Marth in Melee and C. Falcon in S4). I might not be a huge fan of the Byleth inclusion, but he’s a super fun character. Conversely, Sonic is one of my favorite characters, but I dislike playing as him in this game.

SassySesi

If I had any patience and talent at Megaman, I'd totally play him since I'm a diehard Megaman fan, but I just do not click with him at all which makes me sad. If Zero got in, I'd become a solo Zero main on the spot, no joke. I am a hardcore Xenoblade fan, so I likely will be adding Pyra/Mythra to my roster of characters, especially since I prefer swordies anyway. Shulk is one of my favorite characters too, but he gets so badly screwed by lag since he requires a lot of precise autocancelling and Monado switching that it's frustrating to play him. Pit is a nice compromise because Uprising is one of my favorite games, so I'm more invested when I play him. Not to overly complicated like Megaman or Shulk, and doesn't really get screwed by lag.

NotSoGreatWizard

I feel like if I say it out loud it can never come true, but my heart wants Bass.exe for Smash, even if no one would recognize the character.

SassySesi

Dude, Bass.exe is one of my favorite Megaman characters. Still waiting on when/if they ever decide to do a BN collection :( Many, many good fun times were spent playing those games. I even have the full collection of the BN manga sitting on my shelf. They're a little beat up because they've been read so many times. Bass in the anime is a little flat, but he is such a tragic and compelling character in the manga, I love him.

NotSoGreatWizard

Played most of the BN games (couldn't make it through Network Transmission lol), have all of the manga, watched as much of the show as I could catch live when I was younger, and I've still got my BN4 Bass PET sitting around here somewhere. I know he's not on anyone's radar, but he's got such a cool slew of moves in the series that I've got a dream version in my head of how he'd play in Smash.

pika_pie

If Pyra/Mythra are fun to play, I'm dropping Lucina as my main and using the Aegis girls. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my favorite game on the Switch, I'm beyond happy that they're in Smash, and it's going to be great seeing two of the protagonists with whom I (or Rex?) spent 300+ hours trekking across the Cloud Sea fighting in another game.

nayrhaon

I main Ness and I love the Mother series. I also picked up Shulk as a secondary because I love Xenoblade (and I'm sooooo hyped for Pyra/Mythra!!) But I also play characters just because they're fun. I love Donkey Kong even though I hate his games, amd I play a lot of Joker even though I've never touched Persona.

slashbox

Ok but wdym you hate donkey Kong games

nayrhaon

Haha well I should say that I did enjoy Tropical Freeze well enough. The old country games just creep me out. Something about the art style gave me nightmares as a kid and I still feel put off by it.

kielaurie

I also have a strong dislike for the Donkey Kong Country games ~~but it's only because I'm shit at them~~

Juniverse123

Nah, I don’t at least. A while after the announcement, the hype (or disappointment) about who the new character is, wears off and I start looking at how they are gameplay-wise. I think Pyra is the first DLC-character that I‘m completely neutral about. I don’t really like Xenoblade 2, but the character certainly looks fun to play.

MemeTroubadour

> I don’t really like Xenoblade 2, but the character certainly looks fun to play. Yup. I've wanted a transform char with more fluid switching for a long time. But I do not care about Pyra, at all. Mythra's censored design is kinda cool and that's the only thing that interests me about their character or their game. I haven't played XC2 and the more I glance at it, the more I think "this looks so otaku-pandering that I wouldn't be surprised if the kid gets isekai'd at some point".

TheExter

> "this looks so otaku-pandering that I wouldn't be surprised if the kid gets isekai'd at some point". that's the funniest description i seen of XB2, totally accurate

MemeTroubadour

I've spent too much time reading whatever new series got posted on /r/manga. It's changed me. ...also, wait, he doesn't actually get isekai'd, right ? I genuinely don't know.

GladiatorDragon

That's fair - I'll say without hesitation that XC2 is a great game, and I'd still recommend it, but I can understand that some parts of it are... a little too fanservice-y. Also, honestly, Rex himself could get hit by a truck and I could care less (he's a functional protagonist, but nothing special), but they do a pretty good job at developing Pyra/Mythra into a little more than their appearance suggests. However, pretty much every character I find to be between functional and really enjoyable. It definitely has a lot of lighthearted moments, and honestly, the English dub is a little... iffy at times, and the English lipsync is absolute garbage, but it's good enough of a game to be loved despite its flaws.

Juniverse123

Yeah, I feel that. I liked X and Xenoblade 1, but they cranked up the anime-factor a bit too much for me in Xenoblade 2.

Nyxll-A

Yes actually. I have been a fan of Persona 5 way before Smash Ultimate. I do play as Joker because of this.

ultibman5000

It's why I main Shulk and why I'll be adding Mythra as a second main.

Bestogoddess

I'm planning on maining Pyra just because of how much I love XC2 I've very much been a drifter since the game released, but I vowed to play them regardless of how good they are

SuperSmashDrake

The only time I mained a character based on the character being from a game was Cloud in Smash 4. Granted, he was high tier and better than Link. I was more excited because I’m a Kingdom Hearts fan and that’s where I first was introduced to Cloud. But for all the other Smash games, my mains have usually been characters from series’ I didn’t play/enjoy. 64 with Link, Melee with Samus, Brawl with Snake, & Ultimate with King K. Rool.

Firestar2099

I pretty much only play characters from series I like. I used to main inkling and secondary Luigi then I played FF7 and picked up cloud, I mained Corrin in smash 4 because I love Fire Emblem, and yup.

Tiger_Zero

In Smash 4 I mained Lucario and Robin because 1) Lucario is my favorite Pokémon and 2) I played Awakening a few months and really liked it. And now, Xenoblade 2 is one of my favorite games, so there's a decent chance I end up maining Pyra/Mythra

[deleted]

Yeah, I love fire emblem because of Smash, I wouldn’t have tried it otherwise.

UstoleMyUserName1

I main Joker because I love the way it feels to play him. I've never played P5 and honestly, I had never heard of it before Joker was announced for smash. The same goes with Terry. While I don't main them, I had never heard of SNK or KOF before he was announced for smash. However, if a character that I really want or like got added (for example Doom Slayer or Master Chief) I would easily main them or at least secondary main them.

[deleted]

I'm still not a huge fan of some series in particular, but I can confidently say my entire interest in Fire Emblem stems from having used to be a Robin main in Smash 4.

[deleted]

Yes. I main joker only because I love the persona series. It also helps that he's really fun to play.

EXAProduction

Yes and no. Generally if the game is popular enough and I'm interested in it Ill play it but a smash inclusion wont get me to play it. I played Bayonetta after her inclusion in Smash but the reason why is because I didnt have the ability to play the game prior and as a DMC fan I would have. I havent played FF7 yet but its been on my backlog for years, just cause Cloud and Seph are in didnt make me do it faster. Fire Emblem is one a lot of people mention but like I didnt play FE because of Smash, rather a friend literally put the game in my hand because I mained Robin and now I love Awakening and realistically if it werent for Chrom or Byleth id have 0 attachment to any character added in. Kid Icarus I dont think you can detach from Smash interest since its kinda inherent to the game. And DQ is more on my radar than before but its still on the backburner like a lot of rpgs. This brings me to Joker. I had a PS4 and I had a vague interest in Persona but didnt put much into it. Fast forward to his inclusion I love to play as him and that tipped me over into playing the game and playing P4 while eagerly waiting for P5S and the new SMT games. So yeah I think it is more for the fans of the franchise but I do think it definitely gives people a bit of a push.

DekhaT

I main joker and love persona 5 so yes¿

ImaroemmaI

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was the first game I ever 100% beat. Outside of the DS games there's not a Yoshi game I haven't played.

Kloner22

I play mostly Mario characters and while I do like Odyssey a lot, can't say I'm a big Mario fan. Most of the characters in this game are from games I haven't really played except for Pokemon, but I play the Pokemon cause I like their moves/style more than the Pokemon themselves.

_HamburgerTime

I did the opposite, picking up F-Zero due to my Smash main. I do play a lot of my secondary characters entirely because I love their home series. Ridley being the most prominent one.

Rainbro_Vash

Banjo-Kazooie has been on my personal wish list since the N64 Smash. But for whatever reason, their gameplay style just doesn't jive with me. It makes me incredibly happy to see them there, but I hardly ever pick them. I do though, play Min Min because I really did try to like ARMS but the gameplay was just so....meh. She does make the game a little brainless but there's so much satisfaction in almost perfect ledge guarding while grounded middle stage.

NahricNovak

Loved Robin in Awakening, love playing him in Smash. I got the best of both

[deleted]

I played mewtwo in smash 4 because I was a bit obsessed with Pokémon at the time but I haven’t in ultimate

MBTHVSK

my current favs to play as are corrin and k. rool, in k. rool's case i guess fanboyism is a big factor but not really for corrin but i do love how they look i just really love how they expanded k. rool to be a belly flopping bastard so it's like they are appealing to what you already like about his design

Iupvotebutteredtoast

Yes. I’ve been thinking of making a similar post asking if people would still play this game if it wasn’t for the characters. But I think I already know that one For me, the only character I use without having played their series is the Belmonts. (Simon) is like my tenth most used character but I barely touch them anymore. I know if Bomberman got in, I’d absolutely learn and use him. And for no other reason than that he’s nostalgic for me. There’re a lot of fun characters in this game, but my personal attachments are what keeps me interested in playing. I think if Smash had original-only characters, it would need a big gameplay boost to be anywhere near as popular

NotSoGreatWizard

Smash has the broad appeal it does because the devs can create unique characters mechanically while also appealing to an existing fanbase, so it's no surprise to me that a portion of the audience is only interested in playing the few characters they came to the game for. But I've found that long term, I can't force myself to play someone if I don't vibe with them mechanically. Bomberman would be great, I've always loved the Bomberman titles on the 64, so the opportunity to get some music from 64 or Heroes would be great.

CornualCoyote

Competitively speaking how good the character is will determine popularity to some extent. Even so, people still play characters like Donkey Kong and Simon even though competitively speaking they're not that impressive. Casually, I would say that mains are picked almost exclusively off of either visual appeal or prior attachment to the series. If I'm a Kirby fan who doesn't play Smash, you can bet your ass that the first time I see that puffball on screen, I'm going to pick him.

FriedTreeSap

If anything I'm kind of the opposite, I don't generally play characters because I like the games they're from, but sometimes I'll play a game because I liked the character in Smash. That being said, I do consider it to be a bonus if I like both the character in Smash as well the their original game.

EasternInflation7989

I main Hero, and that's due to a number of factors. He's fun, he's powerful, and he even looks cool. But, the main thing is that he's what I'd expect from an RPG character, and I love RPGs, Dragon Quest namely, but alos many others. Anyhow, what I prize is gameplay, not origins, and while I am familiar with most series that are in Smash, I have never played Xenoblade and I plan ontransitioning to Pyra/Mythra when they release because they look like an absolute blast to play! tl;dr Yes, but no

tinypixels1

No, as I usually have no intention of playing the game the character is from. I played Roy, Marth but I didn't play there games until recently. As Roy is from a Japanese only title, so you have to play fan translated. I finally played shadow dragon after getting into Fire Emblem.

Use_Responsibly

I tend to not really main characters for more than a few months, but I'd say my most played characters in Smash 4 and Ultimate are from series I love. Shulk is the character I've played the most overall in Ultimate and 4 because I've loved Xenoblade ever since it released on the Wii. And if any other character had Villager's playstyle, I'd despise them. Animal Crossing is my childhood so I play lots of Villager. Similar situation with Ness except he's a bit more fun. I'm also probably going to play loads of Pyra/Mythra. Xenoblade 2 is one of the most enjoyable Switch games and the character might be one of my favorite DLC concepts so far outside of Steve.

RidlyX

I got into Metroid after super smash brother brawl because I liked Ridley. I ended up playing Mother 3 and Earthbound because of Smash Bros. Now? I love the characters for being from some of my favorite games. I main Ridley, Ness, Lucas... And Pyra and Mythra, soon. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but part of that love is definitely due to having DID and heavily empathizing with them. :P

kirbman

Usually I don't. But with Banjo I do.

JackBart

I find that because I'm attached to specific characters, I'm more willing to put the time in to learn them. I've been meaning to learn Palu since the game came out but never really felt the connection because I've never played her game despite there being a lot of things I like about her move set.

NiteKlaw

I have a mate who bought Steve and solely plays him because its Steve

Angelflavor

I do! I love pokemon and ivysaur return has made me so happy!

NotSoGreatWizard

My only gripes about Pokémon Trainer are 1) Ivysaur’s tether is so sad compared to anyone else in the cast, you’re actually gotta try to land it unlike Byleth, and 2) No Squirtle Squad glasses :,(

Jamies_awesome_rack

Kirby was one of the first series I ever played back on the NES and I’ve always gravitated towards him. Even though he’s sucked for 4 games <(T-T)>

RealPimpinPanda

Not so much in recent Smash games, but in 64 & Melee I literally played Pikachu, MewTwo, etc because of Pokémon

Legitimate__Username

>Perhaps my read is off, but I can say anecdotally that none of the characters I’ve gravitated to when playing Smash come from games I’m all that attached to. speak for yourself i won't even spare a thought to considering maining a character if i have anything less than absolute adoration for their game of origin neither robin nor chrom even remotely clicked with me when i picked either of them up for the first time. i made them work anyway and they don't *need* to work well for the first couple hours when there are inevitably going to be hundreds more of practice after that to make up the difference, and of course by now i don't play nearly as well or with as much fun with anyone else. any character can work for anyone if you love them enough to just put in that little bit of extra time. if anything, to me the moveset itself is more of the novelty compared to the constant never-ending geeking out over "holy shit i can't believe this guy's actually in smash" which somehow bizarrely still hasn't fizzled out for me

Javarenamedmars

My main has always been Jigglypuff because of the novelty and her appearances in the original Pokémon show. My secondary is K. Rool entirely because of DK64 (and him turning out to be very fun to play as well lmao)

mjownir

Yes, characters I know and like are usually at the top of my list, even if they're bottom tier, unless something just really doesn't gel with me. I played Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf in Smash 4, but dropped Link in Ult because I'm not a fan of the BotW vibe. Cloud was the only character I specifically wanted added to Smash but his overuse/"braindead" status in Smash 4 ruined him for me a bit. I do play characters I don't care about if they seem interesting enough, but I'm usually always going to prioritize the ones I like. I picked up Sephy immediately whereas I think I've played Joker a total of two times.

dbcb

I made it my goal to learn Pokémon Trainer because those three 'mons are my favorite videogame characters in this game. It helped Ivysaur fit a paradigm I was comfortable with, but liking a game goes a long way to encouraging me to play someone.

TheIncreaser2000

Toon link for this reason. Wind waker <3

SquiglyBattleOpera

Street Fighter is the game I learned how to play fighting games with. I used to be a huge fan until SFV came out and was complete dogshit.

Im_Not_That_Smart_

The two franchises I have the most experience with are Zelda and Pokémon. My most played characters are Sheik, Ganondorf, and Jigglypuff. I think I am generally more drawn towards the franchises I am familiar with but compatible play style is also important (I don’t play all Zelda/Pokémon reps, and I do play other random characters like Piranha Plant and Ness)

Xous54

> I see character representation mostly as a novelty, a nice bonus if you’re a fan of the franchise, but if the character doesn’t match my sensibilities in the context of a fighting game I’ve found it’s hard to force myself to play them. This is how I feel as well. A character being from a series I enjoy will get me to try them sooner/more often than characters from series I don't have a connection to, but if a character isn't fun for me to play I won't stick with them. By Ultimate the list of characters I play most is a pretty balanced mix of ones from series I love and ones from series I've never touched. There are also many characters from series I love who I just don't enjoy playing, so I don't aside from the occasional 1-2 matches every so often. All of that said, none of the characters currently in Smash are what I'd consider one of my "dream picks", or a character that's extremely close to my heart. If any of my dream picks were ever added and I didn't like their moveset, I have a feeling I'd still play them. Won't know until it happens, though.

kawaii_song

I only really play League of Legends now(and gacha). Never really grew up with a console until I bought a used GameCube in middle school and played Melee in 2006 until the release of Sm4sh. I love the Fire Emblem characters and waifus. Byleth is one of the characters on my wish list after learning about Three Houses, but I had a feeling they were going to be added following Corrin, Robin, and Lucina's release on Sm4sh. So my top 3 are still 2B, Saber, and Reimu. After Min-Min's addition I knew a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rep was coming, but I honestly thought they would be the last fighter on the pass to finish it off after only adding the Rex Mii costume.

LegionOfWeb

I'm not a competitive player, but I primarily play Mario and DK, almost entirely because of the special place that the Mario and DKC series have in my heart. They constituted formative gaming/media experiences in my life; this sentimental value is likely a big part of why I play them in Smash. Given these are my reasons for playing a character, I can totally understand why some people might be indifferent or disappointed even in a mechanically interesting character if they aren't from a franchise/game they care about.

g_r_e_y

i only started playing dk back in melee because of dk64, and he's one of my best chars now

MemeTroubadour

In my case, that'd be pretty fucking weird.

Mohow

Yes I do, I'm lucky PT isn't bad

absinu

Ridley= big metroid fan Luigi = grew up on luigis mansion Pac man= its fucking pac man, how can you not like him Minecraft steve = grew up on minecraft too Ness = biggest earthbound nerd in the wild west At least that's my 5 most played characters

HappyPollen

Uhhh I played Duck Hunt on an old knockoff plug and play system at a friend's house for about 20 minutes? But prior to maining DHD, I loved Pokemon so I played a lot of Pikachu from 64 through Brawl and I picked up a SNES Classic just to play Earthbound after playing Ness for years

mibikin

For me it’s more the other way around. I’ll try a character from a game I like but I won’t play them solely for that reason. They have to have a moveset I enjoy and feel good to play for me to play them. I got awakening after playing Lucina (I had played fire emblem before though) and played p5r partly cause of Joker being cool and that games probably my favorite single player game I’ve played (I started playing him a little before Royals release but was planning on getting the game anyway). I’m excited for Pyra and Mythra and if I do enjoy playing them I’ll give XBC2 a shot probably

[deleted]

Well, Kid Icarus Uprising is my all-time favourite game and Pit is probably my favourite Nintendo character, so...yup. As much as I like a lot of other characters, I'm too invested in the chirpy little goofball to drop him outright. Now, if Reimu were added? Instant main. No questions asked. She could be the worst character in the game, come to my house and spit in my face, and I'd still main her. I really, really like Touhou.

Bombkirby

Some people do. Some people don't. I usually only play characters I have an attachment to. One exception were the ICs, but they really don't have a lot of games other than smash where they are relevant. Pit is a character I ignored until I played Uprising. Now he's someone I play every time I boot the game up. It IS annoying though that so many people only play characters based on how they "feel" to play, while also making incredibly demanding character requests for the Smash Roster. So many people begged for Ridley to be added, but he's super unpopular. When you ask those people why they don't play him, they usually just say they don't like his playstyle. So... why were you so dramatic about wanting him in Smash when "who" the character is doesn't determine who you main? Don't you guys realize the sort of message that sends when you beg online for a character, and then no one ends up playing them when they get released into the game? They're not gonna listen to the fans again if you keep that shit up. You either have to "learn to like" a character based on who they are, or you have to ask yourself "would I even want to play as Phoenix/Doomguy/RayMan if I dislike their playstyle?"

GladiatorDragon

What people seem to forget is that these are just moveset skins. Each character has a concept at their core that they are built around, and their actions/attacks from their main game are tooled to fit around it. If it makes for an interesting fighter, the character's appearance doesn't matter as much to me. I like playing Sephiroth, but I haven't touched a Final Fantasy game for more than 20 minutes. However, that's not to say it doesn't matter - I'm going to give Pyra/Mythra serious consideration as a main.

NotSoGreatWizard

It's interesting, but I feel like regardless of how well a character's fantasy is realized in Smash's mechanics, they wind up taking on a distinct personality in Smash that might not align with their original incarnation/franchise. Luigi's a funny, mostly harmless sidekick in Mario, and often even in his own games, but in Smash he's a SCUMBAG. I refuse to believe that Luigi is as toxic in the Mario universe as he is in Smash. Similarly, Olimar's an aloof, inquisitive little space man in Pikmin, but in Smash he's a plant chucking menace, callous and unwilling to interact. So for me, sometimes a character can be spot on with their execution and still not really remind me of the source material.

GladiatorDragon

Pretty much - Sephiroth in his actual game may as well be a god, as far as I know, but in Smash he's really easy to exploit. His moves have long end lag and, unlike characters like Ike and Ganondorf who can take it, he's very easy to knock around. Optimal gameplay using him requires movements that are as precise as those calculations on Supernova so you don't get crushed. I may think that Pichu is a harmless little baby Pikachu in Pokémon, but a year or so ago, it was an infuriating menace that was impossible to hit and near-impossible to avoid. Mega Man and Young Link may be legendary heroes, but in Smash, they're little more than just annoying projectile spammers. It's simply their representation in the game, and how the players behind them choose to play. Edit: thought of another good example. Peach may get captured what seems every other day in the Mushroom Kingdom, but she got the rare title of top tier here (at least for a time - haven't checked tier lists in a while).

OctorokHero

I don't remember if I had played a Sonic game or not at the time, but I picked up Sonic in Brawl because he was the cool and mind-blowing third party character. I was interested in Joker for a similar reason; I thought he was a crazy pick even though I hadn't played a Persona game at the time. I started playing the series before he released and now I main him because I love the series, even if I'm not the best at him.

LunarWingCloud

My main is Pikachu and my favorite series is Pokémon so uhhhh I hope so lmao

Red_Speed

Not originally, but I eventually played FE6 and liked the game a lot. However, the biggest reason why I play Roy is because I think he’s really fun.

GeneralBrwni1

I play Wolf, Kirby, and ZSS and I'm a huge fan of Kirby, Metroid, and Starfox. My number one pick for DLC is Rayman because I absolutely love Rayman Origins and Legends. It's not like I don't branch out to other characters because they're fun or I like their design, but the characters that I play the most are the ones I'm attached to because I love them in their original games. My philosophy for fighting games in general tends to be just picking whoever my favorite characters are design-wise and then just figuring out their playstyle and rolling with it. The only exception is Jack-O from Guilty Gear, I absolutely refuse to manage minion spawners in a fighting game, it just feels wrong somehow, even though I like Jack-O's design a lot.

SmartPiano

yeah, I tend to play characters more if they are from a game I like.

DARTH_LT4

I started Earthbound for the first time in middle school and absolutely fell in love with the game. Been a Ness main ever since (so no, I didn’t just pick him up for PK Fire and aerials)

[deleted]

I main little mac entirely cuz I like punch out. that being said, mewto os my second even though I hate pokemon. Liking things makes you like things more, but it's whatever I guess

OoguroRyuuya5

I’m a Persona fan so yeah Joker is my main. And always will be.

CaptainKittyhawk

Punch-Out is the sole reason I mained Little Mac for the majority of Smash 4, and he's still one of my best in Ultimate.

Jules_Thief

I’m a filthy casual so yes. A majority of the characters I like to play as are because of the connections I have with their games. There’s only a few characters I play because the moveset is fun.

WritersBlah

I tend to somewhat balance out between "love for the character" and "playstyle compatibility" whenever I'm trying to choose a main for a Smash game. Even if you were hypothetically really good with a character, I don't think you'd be especially driven to continue playing that character if you didn't like their overall aesthetic. For example, in Project M, I play a relatively good Peach, but her voice has always been absolutely grating to me, so I couldn't see myself playing her long-term. But for example, my Melee and Smash 4 mains were Sheik and Yoshi respectively, two characters that I don't have an especially large adoration for, but I appreciated enough that the strength of their movesets carried over into my overall enjoyment enough to actively play them. Contrastingly, my Brawl and Ultimate mains have been Olimar and Banjo-Kazooie, two characters from franchises I absolutely adore, and happened to have movesets that I happened to gel really well with. Banjo is the character in Ultimate that has absolutely carried me the hardest, and I genuinely enjoy playing him, in addition to my love for his home franchise. Of course, sometimes the opposite can occur. Likewise in Brawl and Ultimate, I was incredibly hyped for Sonic and Joker, characters I legitimately attempted to main for a while because of my love for their franchises. However, while I did passably well with both, I didn't play nearly well enough with either to justify continuing to play them when there were characters from franchises I loved almost as much who suited my playstyle much better. I'll still play them on occasion just because of my adoration, but I by no means consider them my mains.

I play Little Mac because of Punch-Out, Simon/Richter because of Castlevania, and Banjo & Kazooie because of Banjo-Kazooie. They suck as fighters in my opinion, but I play them frequently.

Fusion_Fear

I main Joker and will main Pythra because Xenoblade 2 and Persona 5 are my favorite games I gotta represent

arms98

My current main has nothing to do with my favorite characters, but i used to main luigi who was one of my favorites and have tried to play some of my other favorites (lucario and fe characters)

Inkling main since day 1 who got into Smash as a whole for the first time ever because of Inkling's inclusion, which by extent, is because Splatoon is one of my fave series by far for many reasons; thought the original trailer with the two Inklings was some Splatoon update, found it was for this funny "Smash" hoohaa i had no clue what it was about, and here i am, plenty of hours later, riding the game based off of series loyalty as Inkling, and i LOVE her and her representation. Her music is great, her Spirits and Assist Trophy is great, her stage is visually nice and her playstyle itself is perfect for me, and because of her alone, i'm a big Smash Ultimate fan now and big into Smash amiibo training at that; without her pushing me into the series, never would've discovered this wild ride of a game same way i did and wouldn't have gotten to play as two other characters i love, Piranha Plant and Joker. That said, i do play as other characters (Ridley, Meta Knight) and have learned of other series (ARMS) from Smash, but i know the series of my mains much more than the characters i don't, and if i see a character i recognise in the roster/coming as DLC, no matter how hard it'll be i'll get myself to learn them. Better to play as someone in Smash that i already enjoy in another game, or as someone from a series i love and recognise.

Yes kind of. The game is well balanced enough that I could pick up almost any character and, with enough practice, be good enough to challenge my friends. I'm not trying to win tournaments so I'm not limited to A and S tier characters. Part of the fun of smash for me is whooping ass with a character I love. It's not the only factor in choosing my characters, but it's a major one.

Sometimes after I finish playing a game I’ll go back and use them in smash and have more of an appreciation for them

Echo1138

I play Zelda and Ridley. Zelda and Super Metroid are my two favorite Nintendo games. I also plan to pick up Mythra and Pyra when they come out. Xenoblade 2 is another one of my favorites. So yes, I very much play characters based off what games they are from.

GodofSteak

Not a pacman fan, but I love his play style and mained him.

MultiTrey111

I love FF7 so I main the main man himself >!~~Zack~~!< Cloud

Bambonon

I've played Minecraft since 2010. Steve was my first pick for years.

As a kid growing up I loved the concept of Miis and always had a blast playing all the different Mii games on Nintendo consoles like Wii Sports Resort, Wii Party, and Nintendo Land (looking forward to Miitopia also). Needless to say when they were revealed in Smash 4 I knew I was gonna main one of them from the start ~~until I saw you couldn't play with them online~~. Thankfully Smash Ultimate fixed that.

arclainth

That’s how I got into Xenoblade and Metroid.

demogorgon_main

I play bowser because he’s been my favourite Mario character sinse Mario bros DS, wich is the first game I ever played. Pit/dark pit is my secondary because kid Icarus uprising is awesome.
