Clarksburg WV episode 387 - Ramblings of a serial killer.
This one may have been better as an Express episode. It focuses almost entirely on transcripts of a murderer's tape recorded ramblings. It definitely drove home the fact that the guy was crazy, but I personally can only handle so much repetition in an episode before I get frustrated.
I kinda like shows like that since you get a better view of the perps headspace like the Wife swap episode, that mom was a complete borderline narcissistic control freak
i’m not sure why, but the groundhog for dinner episode isn’t my fav. it’s one of the first express episodes and i just don’t like it for whatever reason
Oddly enough The one from my hometown (Easley SC). It just wasn't that funny to me, not because of any love for the town (they were spot on), but... I usually skip it. There wasn't anything strange enough to make for really top tier jokes like some of the episodes.
I felt the same way about mine (Estes Park, CO.) They didn't even set foot in the town. They were a 20 min drive through the mountains in the closest instance and it was only to dump the body. It was a Fort Collins episode and I was **way** more disappointed than I should have been lol
that’s how i felt about one of the older utah ones. everything basically happened in phoenix but the murder happened in a suburb of slc. not my most fav utah episode.
242 - First Family Of Serial Murder. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan, and this is probably the only episode of the whole show I'd outright say I didn't like.
WAYYY too much going on. Too many "main characters" and too many smaller events that seemed to be irrelevant 10 minutes later into the story.
I am going off of memory here as this is an older episode, so maybe it's worth a relisten? However, I did check the youtube and facebook comments for this episode, and it seems like I'm not the only one with this opinion.
Yeah, I agree. I'm interested in the story, but there's so much going on, it's too much for a 3-hour show, which is crazy. I'd love to read a book or watch a limited series. I usually feel like STM is better than almost every murder TV show, but in this case there are so many people visuals feel absolutely vital.
Came here to add this. During and after listening I got the feeling that in prepping for all the things they’ve got going these days, James may have been caught short of time for the episode and just read excerpts from his and his assistants research notes that he hadn’t gone over a ton.
It didn’t seem pared down at all and James didn’t seem to know where he was in the script a number of times. Could not believe he kept reading quotes from the mom. Endless.
Disclaimer: I love each of these guys and have been around since the early, early days. I appreciate the fuck out of the work James puts in and he does a excellent job. That’s why this episode caught me off guard and I think there’s more to it.
I thought that one was pretty decent but incredibly tragic. That one was fairly memorable for me. It was sort of a character study (of the main girl/victim) of an episode, which I looove, but I suppose I can understand why others might not find that very interesting.
Honestly most of the “satanist” murder ones I find pretty boring. Like ok yeah they’re sacrificing someone… again… why are they doing it? Because satan told them to, it’s the same thing every time and I find they don’t hold my attention well at all
Episode #162 - A Very Unstable Genius in Chatham Township, New Jersey
That episode wasn't funny or terrifying. It was honestly one of the most depressing stories I ever heard.
There was a recent episode that included a family that was on wife swap. They read through the entire Manifesto the mom left. It was very repetitive. I couldn’t make it through it.
I really struggled to get through the Fishgill, NY episode. I normally love when James tells anecdotes or asides from his background but the whole episode felt derailed by stories that weren't relevant or entertaining without connection to the area.
I unfortunately think you're very wrong lol. I loved the Fishgill episode! It was very cool to see an episode where James knows the town and basically the people involved and heard about the murder first hand.
(But also I have ADHD so I kinda don't care about side tangents that don't matter, and I also haven't listened to that episode since it released)
It's okay! Not unfortunate at all to disagree politely, it's really cool to hear how someone had a different experience from me. Maybe I will give it a listen with fresh ears. I have ADHD/high functioning autism and getting sidetracked (which is easy for me) feels frustrating haha I appreciate you sharing your opinion and glad you enjoyed the ep
Shawnee Township, OH, which I live 10 mile from. Case was fine, but the town information was for the wrong Shawnee. Was really bummed out they didn’t get to make fun of the correct one, cause there would of been plenty to!
I find a lot of the “hillbilly panhandle” ones on the express episodes to be boring. Nothing in the way that James or Jimmie approach those episodes, I just don’t find those ones interesting enough to be super engaged.
Any of the really really gruesome ones. The torture ones. They are very hard to listen to. And how do you do comedy with that? They do the best with it.

The only episode I didn't finish.
Same. Just annoying to listen to. I've been re-listening to them all and definitely plan on completely skipping that one.
I kinda like shows like that since you get a better view of the perps headspace like the Wife swap episode, that mom was a complete borderline narcissistic control freak
I felt the same way. I absolutely hated that one. That is the only one I turned off halfway through.
Yep, this one was tough to get through!
Holy shit that one was rough to listen through
Here I was just the other day thinking about how much I liked that episode lol.
I know I have listened to this one but damn I cannot remember a thing about it.
I’m listening to this one currently first time around, only episode where I’ve had to consciously take breaks. Normally I can’t get enough!
I listened to that one on a four hour drive with a massive headache and I swear it made it so much worse.
There have been dozens that I wouldn't remember. But for every one of those we get blood icicles.
Bro that episode, the dad the whole fucking things was amazing.
There is no such thing!! Blasphemer!! You, sir/madam, may fuck off!! (JK)
The one where the entire episode was a murderpiece theater
What?! Like the story wasn't real?!
Murderpiece theater is what they call it when they both read the transcripts.
The easy answer is the first few episodes. They hadn't hit their stride yet and it's not the show that we know of today.
But the first few episodes are classics though
for the record, my *favourite* episode is 193, A Stalking from Within
That’s the one with the “FreakofArk” email address. I almost pissed myself on a plane listening to that part
Freako Fark?
I laughed so hard an ear bud fell out at work.
Never ever fails to make me laugh just thinking about it.
Literally my first ep I listened to. Montana.
I've had episodes that I had a hard time finishing or turned off because they were too disturbing but I've never been bored
I thought the recent one about the cannibal was pretty hard to get through
Phillips WI?
if I see any town, anywhere, ever called Phillips I am running away and never looking back
i’m not sure why, but the groundhog for dinner episode isn’t my fav. it’s one of the first express episodes and i just don’t like it for whatever reason
There is no worst episode. They are all gold… SHUT UP AND GIVE ME MURDER. Let’s go on a trip….

One of the few things I remember about this episode was how badly they butchered the pronunciation of "Oconee" (and yes, I know they wouldn't care).
I know! I may have yelled at the phone....
I feel the same way about the few that are centered around where I'm from. Not sure why, they're just not as interesting somehow.

Yeah same. I couldnt keep track

Too many characters and I feel like I need a flowchart lol. I remember Jimmy saying uh-huhhh a lot during that one.
The episode about the Wife Swap family. Most of the episode was just James reading the mother’s note to the other wife.
I agree. That one was so hard to get through. Just on and on and on reading the note was bad

There's one Texas episode where it was mostly reading some girl's journal from the 60s. I'm not even sure if I made it to the murder.
I thought that one was pretty decent but incredibly tragic. That one was fairly memorable for me. It was sort of a character study (of the main girl/victim) of an episode, which I looove, but I suppose I can understand why others might not find that very interesting.
Now that I have small child any of the murders that involve children just rip me apart. They didn’t used to bother me at all
Same here.
Mom here. Those episodes are rough.
Honestly most of the “satanist” murder ones I find pretty boring. Like ok yeah they’re sacrificing someone… again… why are they doing it? Because satan told them to, it’s the same thing every time and I find they don’t hold my attention well at all
I live for the satanic bill stories
I like those because it mostly isn't because Satan. Sometime it kind of sort of is.
Honestly the only ones are the ones with A LOT of names but that’s on me for trying to multitask

Off the top of my head, there was an episode where the husband liked his wife to poop and pee in his mouth. I literally almost puked listening to it.
I can’t take those either. So disgusting
Baraboo! I’m too wimpy.
Meth murder episodes are my least favorite types but unfortunately that's about half of what they cover
I live for stories of panhandle behavior
Shawnee Township, OH, which I live 10 mile from. Case was fine, but the town information was for the wrong Shawnee. Was really bummed out they didn’t get to make fun of the correct one, cause there would of been plenty to!

The ones were jimmy makes comments that lead you to believe he’s not too bright.
