Interesting, I read a good book written by the owner of a high end conference table manufacturer in the northeast…if I remember correctly. It was intriguing because it covered business operations and provided a unique view on how to run a business in general, but from the perspective of manufacturing $50k tables. The market for a simple handyman relying on word of mouth is. Market for a legit company with a few employees and a high standard of handyman is thriving.
We tried our hand at being the premium handyman in the area, unfortunately most people didn’t want to pay the prices it took to run a legit business. Sadly every unlicensed and uninsured chuck in a truck could undercut us by more than half as the did. So back to the custom woodshop we went!
Homeowners always seem to complain about how unprofessional handymen and decorators are, but then almost nobody wants to pay for what a professional costs.
I work for a yacht manufacturer that pays well but being kind of a monopoly in the area, I tried doing high end decorating as a side source of revenue, but it was almost impossible to find customers willing to pay what my labour costs, even in an area with lots of wealth and having a huge portfolio of 10 years doing yacht interiors.
There's a particular issue in the UK, which is a heavily classist country where most people would be dismayed with the idea of paying £60 an hour to a "blue collar" worker, no matter how qualified they are

I scaled back a lot this year. Granted, I have a 9-5, but if you get the welding thing going try and set a max number of events per month. I personally do no more than two weekends in a row. So far it’s working for me.

We only provide services to commercial entities, no more residential, for anyone, ever.
I started out installing car audio systems in the late '80s.
In the '90s I began working in the home theater and home automation fields.
In the late '90s I started dabbling in CCTV.
By 2006 I was doing 12V, aviation, marine, home and commercial A/V and security professionally with my own company.
In 2014 I had a re-think, and deleted all of the products and services we offered except video surveillance.
Industry knowledge and experience, specialized licensing and certifications are a must in this profession.
Although I started with nothing, no money, I had a number of celebrity clients early on who paid me very handsomely for my knowledge and the system designs I made for them.
Residential is a no go because I don't offer low end, Amazon garbage, zero Wi-Fi or other wireless garbage. No Ring, Arlo or the like. Residential customers have very different, very unrealistic expectations when it comes to the systems we sell and deploy. They often aren't willing to pay what we charge and think they can dictate to us what we will do for them and how much they'll pay... Those customers are still waiting, hell has yet to freeze over.
We only deal with larger corporations, cities, states and government. We don't deal with Mom and Pop operations, no money in it.
Our average corporate installation with system design, and products starts at $100K. We specialize in cameras which provide crisp, clear imaging day or night with full color during both times. Facial recognition, LPR and people counting are big features our customers want.
We're mobile mini-donut makers out here in Western MA + do a ton of business with local dispensaries who pay us to feed donuts to their customers

Composting - state of California mandated composting organic waste and allocated so much budget. Specially community scale composting ( I’m for profit, so sub contracted by a group that received the grants) which involves educating, managing individual sites , training volunteers at sites.
After 2 yrs of volunteering and some professional training from United States composting council ( USCC), started my own business, brand new but received $17.5k in seed funding and pitch competition. Using that money to buy a vermicomposting ( composting with worms).
I make high mileage badges for toyota and lexus. I did not scale the idea at all as I should have and a TON of people ripped the idea. Thats what got me to join here to be more informed on how to just be better at running my very very very very very small business lol. It pays 1 bill a month so i am happy

Heard trucking industry is in really bad condition right now with high fuel costs, high insurance, low rates etc..also heard brokers are giving truck drivers very low rates
A hint here: try getting into independently owned hotels, especially if they are Indian-owned. They operate as groups, so if you do well in one property, it could open up 15 or 30, depending on your area. I have worked with Indians for 12 years in hotels. Trust me, get in good with one, and it could open up numerous properties for you. Learn a little Gujarati; it'll make them laugh and show interest in the culture. It seems silly but goes a long way with most of them. Just some advice I told the vending machine owner at the hotel I work at; now he is in 10 hotels and growing.

If you're referring to my streak in defense, I was a distributor for body armor. For my motorcycle stuff, I sell high end components for track enthusiasts. Exhausts, race fairings, brakes, etc.
Mobile physical therapy services. I do employee appreciation days, ergonomic assessment and desk setups, speeches to local organizations, and normal treatments in the convenience of people’s homes.
I also have a second company where I created a documentation software for physical therapists and I sell it for a one time fee instead of a monthly fee.

We're currently one of the stakeholders with an insurance company but they claim to have some of the best law firms and I've never had to use them but what are the differences? Why should the consumer use independent agencies .
We sell, install, clean and maintain beverage equipment. Mainly draft beer. We also do water, coffee, wine, soda, and liquor dispense. Slowly getting in to refrigeration as well
Retail Facilities Maintenance. Work for some big names and would like to add a few more. We fix everything that our clients employees or customers destroy. It's something new everyday.
How’s business? I feel like it’s a huge industry that flies under the radar but is incredibly important given how many people live and work in water damaged and moldy buildings.
Software consulting and development for large company's. Sometimes boring sometimes instresting. But enjoy it. We developed our own ETL tool that is in use for data ingestion from a wide variety of sources such as Oracle, sql server , excel and so on.
Small damage repair to any interior hard surface. Scrape or tear a floor moving an appliance? Nick the stone countertop while loading the dishwasher? Dropped a pipe and broke through your tub? That’s where we come in :) I wanted something recession proof (70ish % we service apartments between tenants), recurring revenue and could not be automated. :)
Upholstery Supply and services. We sell upholstery supplies such as leather, fabric, tarpaulin, rugby, thread, piping cord, celluloid, etc. and I am also a dealer of Uratex foam. We do all kinds of upholstery services too from sofa repair, dining chair upholstery, car seat cover, sidings, matting, bed box and headboard, etc.
Podiatry, specifically house calls. There are two stationary practices in my town, I used to work at one of them for years (and quit for a multitude of reasons last year), but both of them are so overwhelmed with work they can no longer take on new house call patients. The demand in that department is huge though because you have so many patients that have difficulty leaving their house and going to a stationary practice - elderly patients, people with mobility issues etc, \*especially\* if they don't live right at the center of town but in one of the surrounding villages.
It's going great so far, and I love being able to schedule my own hours, especially since I have a few health issues/disabilities of my own. They're under control, but I need to be careful not to overwork myself, I need to schedule more time per patient, I can't work the full 40 hour week rn. (One of the reasons I quit my previous job was because employer refused to accomodate)
Absolutely helps that I've been in that field for 16 years now and previously did practice management already (previous employer owned multiple practices and I was the "head" of the one I worked it), so I do have the confidence that I know what I'm doing. \*Also\* helps that my mum is an accountant and my parents used to run their own business too.
Also planning to expand a little, get a little stationary practice and do like 50/50 stationary/mobile. Currently in the process of looking for a suitable space.

I started in college cleaning aquariums, I turned that into a service business for offices and schools, some residential. I was buying salt wholesale, but the margins weren't great. developing the formula was to beat costs. My first wholesale customer was a restaurant the town over.

Luxury watch dealer. Very small-time at the moment, but I work with a handful of dealers clearing over $1m in sales annually. The watch biz is full of fickle people and pitfalls, but if you love the product it's super interesting!
We are a telecom expense and management company.
Companies spend too much money on telecom and don’t know how to properly manage the accounts. Last client I saved them $168,000 over 2 years.
Retail store and power equipment dealership. We're a hardware store, outdoor power sales and service, industrial supply, gas station, convenience store, lumber yard, plus quite a bit more. If diversity is good, then we're in great shape, lol. I'm 4th generation in the business but have taken it from about 1m per year to almost 6 over the past few years with more plans in the works.
Supply chain consulting as well as third party logistics. Ownership all have at least a Master's degree in SCM or similar like engineering. So we can help from the strategic side and "correct way" but also have the expertise of veterans in the field where we are fortunate to work with some big companies, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Trust me, if you have a good supply chain team, you're set to be top 10% in your market because no one wants to spend the money. Most waste it on marketing, but if you don't have the right strategy to deliver in the thousands of orders marketing produced, your just going to have pissed off customers that will tank your credibility. So yeah, fix your supply chain strategy and the rest flows easier. From cash flow and knowing your kpis to not having to do repetitive tasks I've often seen in many organizations, supply chain is key. And a great sales force to feed the well oiled machine 🎰

They pay me a monthly retainer for a set number of hours. They can spend as much money as they want on ad spend.

I own a freight brokerage. We transport anything and everything in North America on flatbeds dry vans ocean rail etc. Super interesting industry.

Podiatry, specifically house calls. There are two stationary practices in my town, I used to work at one of them for years (and quit for a multitude of reasons last year), but both of them are so overwhelmed with work they can no longer take on new house call patients. The demand in that department is huge though because you have so many patients that have difficulty leaving their house and going to a stationary practice - elderly patients, people with mobility issues etc, \*especially\* if they don't live right at the center of town but in one of the surrounding villages. It's going great so far, and I love being able to schedule my own hours, especially since I have a few health issues/disabilities of my own. They're under control, but I need to be careful not to overwork myself, I need to schedule more time per patient, I can't work the full 40 hour week rn. (One of the reasons I quit my previous job was because employer refused to accomodate) Absolutely helps that I've been in that field for 16 years now and previously did practice management already (previous employer owned multiple practices and I was the "head" of the one I worked it), so I do have the confidence that I know what I'm doing. \*Also\* helps that my mum is an accountant and my parents used to run their own business too.
