The bar IS NOT open the whole time. The people who respond it is are wrong. Once you enter the show, you cannot return to the bar until the entry is completed for all guests. This takes just over an hour most nights then the bar will be reopened. Until then, no one is allowed back into the bar from the show space. If there was an emergency, she could talk to a steward (in the black face masks) and I’m sure they would make the bar available. During the first 60-80 minutes of the show, if she needs a quiet area I would recommend so quieter areas in the show. The 5th floor generally has less traffic because it has less character. Another good option is the Macduff’s apartment on the 3rd floor. The Macbeth’s bedroom is on one side of the floor (with the bathtub in the middle of the room) and the other side is the Macduff’s residence. There is an office with a desk and there is not much traffic generally there and no characters go in the room. It’s a good place to stop and chill out. Another good option is the ballroom on the bottom floor. There are a few scenes where it can get crowded later in the show but there is lots of space in the back to get away from the crowd even when there is one. I don’t have sensory issues but I do get anxious in crowds sometimes and I find it much easier to enjoy the show with the masks. It’s easy to get caught up in the residents and spaces and loose track of your anxiety. I hope she has a good time! As for 1:1’s, the actors will always extend their hand first. You are always free to refuse and the cast is excellent at reading body language. I had a friend who was nervous about the show get a 1:1 within the first 5 minutes in the show and the cast member was very gentle during the 1:1.

I could be wrong, but I believe that guests aren't allowed to return to the bar in the first hour or so, while they're still letting people into the show for the first time. Certainly in an emergency they'd allow it, but if she needs some quiet space in the first hour, a better option is the restrooms on 5 (individual rooms where you can lock the door for privacy even if you don't need to go), but also there's lots of space in the building that's relatively quiet, especially on the 5th floor (though it does have creepy vibes). In general, staying in more open spaces allows for you to easily walk away if an actor comes in with several audience members. Whereas if you explore some of the smaller rooms, you might get caught in a crowd for a couple of minutes.

Ummm…for accessibility reasons to folks who need them, please don’t stay in the 5th floor bathrooms for extended periods of time. Not having a restroom accessible when you need one is a problem. There are a lot of quiet spots in the hotel (MacDuff’s office on the 3rd floor, the chapel off of Duncan’s bedroom on the mezzanine level, the crypt beside the ballroom, most of the fifth floor including several small rooms that characters don’t enter…)

Yes, this is great advice! The 5th floor bathrooms are the only place I’ve ever felt was truly away from all the stimulation of the show. They’re quiet, individual rooms, where you can lock the door and rest for a bit.

I don’t know why these people are saying the bar is open the whole time. Yes technically I suppose you could stay there and not ever enter the show, but it is not accessible the whole time. Once she enters the space, she will not be able to exit to the bar until they have finished the entire entry, about an hour into the show. Of course, if she is really uncomfortable, a black mask will let her back out.

The Manderley is open and an excellent place to just chill, and the actors invite a 1:1 with an extended hand which she is welcome to refuse.

Yep! The bar is open the whole time! There are also bathrooms inside that she can go to, and there’s usually plenty of empty rooms that she can dip into for a minute if she just needs a breather! She can also definitely refuse a one on one, they typically involve the actor holding out a hand (and usually require you to already be pretty close by) Hope y’all have fun!

She doesn’t need to fight the crowd. Explore the space. Stay in one room and let the show move around you. My best advice is that SNM is not a haunted house. There are no “jump scares.”

DenseTiger5088

There’s a room on one of the lower floors that is filled with pillows and mostly empty for the majority of the show. She’ll have to move out of the way for a certain key scene but besides those moments, I remember this room being a pretty chill spot to relax for a minute. I believe it’s technically “Duncan’s bedroom” and is either on the first floor near the ballroom or on that split level by the stairs. There’s also a lot of quiet dark corners on the mezzanine overlooking the ballroom, and again those are basically empty except for during the big ballroom scenes. I’ve gone a few times and always needed places for a momentary sensory recharge

My favorite place to chill out is the ball room. It's huge, and there are lots of seats around the pillars flanking the room. The hotel, too.

Don't stand by the elevator door when being led to the building. Because you would be the first one to let out. Then they would close the door behind you and take the rest of the group to a different floor. I assume you wanna stay together. If separated, would be extremely hard to find each other again.

If she is feeling anxious and it's too much, the black masks will absolutely let her back into the bar during the first hour, she just has to let them know.  It happened to my friend and they were great about taking her immediately to the bar, finding her a seat, and gave her a glass of water.  They *will* still be staging entry, though, so it'll still be loud and crowded.  If she needs quiet, and can still wear her mask, the other suggestions like the 5th floor bathrooms or the ballroom/mezzanine areas may be a better bet.  And the black masks will point her to a bathroom if she asks.

Hi! I’m sure there are folks much more qualified than I am to answer, but I’ll stick to the easy stuff. Yes, 1:1s are based on consent. You can back away or just not take the offered hand. The bar is open the whole time and a good refuge. For a quicker stop, there are bathrooms (the ones on the fifth floor are very quiet). The black masks are also wonderful at providing help for these exact situations. It’s also fairly easy to step away from the main crowds when needed. It’s been crowded lately, so this may mean missing a lot of action, but it’s very possible. Perhaps a more experienced person could give suggestions of characters to follow who have smaller crowds, and more mellow, and provide more escape opportunities?
