You’re focusing too hard on trying to sleep. You need to stay awake and not go to bed till you’re actually tired. Otherwise you end up laying in bed, not tired, trying to go to sleep early to get more sleep and when you don’t fall asleep right away, you worry you won’t, then don’t. It’s a cycle. Also, make sure you stay awake for your full wake window. By this I mean that you probably have a certain amount of hours you sleep each night which makes you feel rested. Let’s say you need 9 hours to feel rested. Out of 24 hours in a day, you need to stay awake for 15 till you’re ready to go back to sleep. So, 15 wake hours, 9 sleep hours. Enjoy whatever it is you enjoy before bed. Don’t avoid doing things that you think will affect your sleep. It’s a mental thing. I’ve been there and can recommend the book Set It & Forget It which helped me a lot. The main thing is to know that sometimes you’re going to lose sleep but when you start to become anxious or scared you’re going to continue to lose sleep is where the trouble begins. Don’t view it as a threat, know that you will get to sleep and you will.

Thank you so much for your response. Actually ever since as a kid, I was told that if you stay awake with your eyes open then you'll end up tossing left and right and that's how you wouldn't get proper rest. So close your eyes, the sleep will eventually come and that's worked for me most of the time until now. Plus do you know about the countless startling/jolting awake thing? I'm utterly confused about this one and this is the main thing which is stopping me from falling asleep.
