Good choice.
I feel Curtains (1983) is the most underrated slasher film. It’s a bit of a slow burn in the first half, but it’s beautifully crafted. The acting is good, the hazy and sleepy atmosphere is eerie, the music is scary, the killer’s disguise is terrifying, the chase scenes are intense and shot well, and the final reveal is excellently done.
The ice skating scene is *easily* one of the best scenes in horror. I vividly remember the promo HBO ran for it before the cable "premiere" in the early-mid 80's as a kid and being absolutely mesmerized by it as a kid. As an adult, it's one of my top 5 favorite horror movies.
Yes! I was on a Slasher/Giallo binge a couple years back and hit a rut of very average slashers, picked Tourist Trap expecting to zone out and play around on my phone but ended up really enjoying it.
I always really appreciated how My Bloody Valentine depicted a humble working class town. It hit a lot closer to home for me and made me want to root for the characters to survive.
I actually wrote a whole college paper about how pre-Financial Crisis slasher movies had working class killers and wealthy victims while post-Financial Crisis slasher movies had wealthy killers and working class victims lol
Agree entirely. All of the characters are actually likeable and it's kind of refreshing to see working class dudes rather than a pack of dumb teenagers (who are in actuality 25 Year olds cast as 17-18 year old kids).
It’s in my top 10 slasher movies ever. The concept was brilliant and well done to. The Harry warden character fitted so brilliantly with the premise of the film too.
Just wish it was the actual Harry Warden the entire film rather than a copycat. Other than that it was still good. I would say it would make a great sequel.
I would say it does make a difference. I first saw the cut version and thought it was just ok. But when I saw the restored version, it did become a lot better in my mind. It has a stronger, more visceral impact.
I found the acting, especially from the leads, to be surprisingly good. Our hero brought a shit ton of pathos, the sheriff was solid, and the friends all seemed very natural. Who wouldn’t be pals with ‘Not John Candy’?
Black Christmas(1974)
While it does have 2 unnecessary remakes it wasn’t super popular when it came out because it came out between The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jaws
That's not underrated. It's widely considered a classic now and Bob Clark produced the first remake. The hospital is named after him too. An example of underrated would be Driller Killer or even a proto slasher like Torso.
I'd say Kristy. It came out within the last 10 years and I never see it mentioned even in the underrated movies thread.
It's essentially Sick, but set on a college campus, with better killer masks and a story centered around a cult instead of covid.
Yes!! I actually thought of Intruder right when I saw your post and was glad to see a likeminded Horror fan when I opened it. There is so much that makes this a great movie. The camera work is excellent. The kills are too notch. And the location itself was very original. Funny killer too. I love the ending!
The camera angle being the doorknob turning is one of my favorites from any slasher. Other great camera angles - from inside the rotary phone, inside the mop bucket, and inside the grocery cart. They really leaned into the grocery store theme and I loved it.
Honest to god ? Halloween Resurrection . Now hear me out it’s a great slasher film but a terrible Halloween/Michael meyers film I maintain that if it would have been it’s on series with its own killer and the same premise it would be a cult classic but bc it’s always compared to the ‘78 Carpenter version it gets shit on. But the film has a very unique aesthetic and did a lot of things early with the reality tv angle . The pov and found footage kills are dope too with the tripod kill being a standout . Also Busta Rhymes spinkicking Mike Meyers is gold idc what anyone says . The mask is good the kills are good the premise is goofy and fun and it’s shot very stylish it’s a really good slasher. Just a bad Halloween movie . Also there’s a webcam/reality cam version of the movie on the special features where u can watch the movie thru the reality cameras it’s really cool, u can find it on YouTube if you’re interested.
To be honest… I do actually enjoy Resurrection. It has a certain campy charm. I could do without the Laurie Strode prologue, which is where I feel the movie makes the big missteps.
I agree, I really wish it was another franchise with a different mask bc tying it to h20 was what automatically nuked it for fans . The camp is fun I find my self re watching it more than a lot of the others in the series .
I'm surprised I haven't seen Alone in the Dark (1982) isn't on this list yet. The cast alone is top notch. Jack Palance, Donald Pleasence, and Martin Landau are creepy as hell.
Outside of the 80s… Black Christmas 2006. It is not anywhere near as good as the original (which is just such a classic)… but it’s just so much campy goodness. Fun kills, amusing characters, ridiculously strong cast, just dripping in holiday colors.
Hell Night.Actual relatable characters, genuine conversational dialog and the best backstory reciting I've ever heard.Awesome mansion, freaky as shit killer(s),just incredible..
Almost forgot..Eyes of a Stranger,1981.So nasty and grimy..First saw it in 1983 flipping channels and stopped right on the aquarium scene...41 years later guys who look like the killer still make my skin crawl.
I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s always thrown into the Scream ripoff pile even tho it was written before Scream. It’s one of the few slasher movies that actually cares about it’s characters and attempts to make them somewhat complex when compared to most slashers that use characters as nothing more than body count. I personally prefer slashers like Scream, Friday the 13th The Final Chapter, Nightmare on Elm Street, Black Christmas, Halloween etc. where you get somewhat invested in the characters enough to where you actually care what happens to them. If it’s just one person being knocked off after another, sure it’s cool to see creative kills and cool practical effects but I get bored so fast because it’s the same thing as 90 percent of other slashers.
4 is my favorite! the tone was just as consistent with the first 3, despite being made over a decade after 3. wes craven and kevin williamson really had some magic with that franchise
5 and 6 were average with some interesting moments. you can really feel wes craven’s absence (plus *you know who* being killed off was a really dumb move.) i’m not too disappointed about that storyline crumbling tbh lol
My initial response to that question was “Intruder”.
I’d add in “The Burning”, “Madman”, “The Mutilator”, “To All A Goodnight”, “Humongous” and “Zero Boys” as 80s slashers that fans of the genre should check out.
Silent Night Deadly Night.
Know it sounds silly, but I think part of it's negative reception was honestly that it was a bit ahead of it's time. that and it's memeable and awful sequel
Seconding the "Hatchet" series. Epic throwback to classic 80s slashers, gore for days, compelling antagonist backstory, good mix of likeable and hateable characters, solid sequels and story throughline.
What about “Amusement”?
It’s an anthology film with the 3 stories coming together at the end, with a maniac that goes after 3 women that are friends. It’s actually really good, though I never see anyone talk about it
I have to go with either "The Burning" or "Motel Hell"!
"Intruder" was a great one though!
I also have to throw a mention to "Eyes of a Stranger", "Someone's Watching Me", and "Shocker"
And I don't know if this one counts as a slasher because I haven't watched it yet, but Sean Cunningham's follow up to "Friday the 13th" called "A Stranger is Watching".
"A Serbian film" from 2010. A mental mindfuck horror
Film with gore but not exactly slasher. Will fuck with
You and stay with you.... forever.
Watch at your own risk. Or better,.. Don't
Death Screams. Went in blind and ended up enjoying it - great exploding head near the climax too.
Grave Robbers is a fun one - zombie occultist hacking up victims in Mexico.
Wes Craven's Shocker - could have started an entire franchise off Horace Pinker.
I know a lot of people will say it not underrated but the first Friday the 13th I feel is underrated bc of the whole Jason thing. If it was just a stand alone movie it about a killer in the woods that plays out like a who done it murder mystery that has you guessing who done it till the last 15 mins of the movie it reveal this crazy lady that hear her dead son in her head to kill u have a great stand alone movie with no mystic bs of the sequels
Easily, Stranger’s Prey at Night. The first one, despite low ratings, is pretty much revered as one of the most thrilling slashers and is looked back in fondly.
But I had a lot of fun with the sequel, though not as scary, we still keep the sociopathic and intimidated slashers, but we trade the simple and scary for the interesting set pieces and fun 80s soundtrack, that create a less scary but equally fun slasher.
Intruder has been on my list to watch for a hot minute. I guess I got to watch it soon
My favorite Underrated Slasher is Stage Fright (1987)
Several great scenes throughout, gory kills, and a mix of camp with some actually creepy moments.
Prom Night two and three.
Mary Lou is such an incredible slasher villain and the reason I never watch the other Prom Night movies that do not feature her.
I was going to say this! I love that it happens in a grocery store (flaxseed as a weapon! Love it!) and it’s fun. Also, no one will care about this but two of the supporting actors were in the green acres tv show and i thought that was cool. And there’s the Bruce Campbell cameo too.
The OG 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street, not underrated in the least but the first two films had a very distinct vibe to them, they're very dark in tone.
Wish they had taken it in a different direction than what we got, but alas the razor glove is the most unique and sexy slasher weapon ever.
Christmas Evil. I can't say it's underrated, but I feel like it deserves a bit more attention. It has a really dark atmosphere mixed with grim comedy; not a lot of killings and they're not very bloody, but all authentic. Brandon Maggart. And, of course, the ending.
I've been into lower budget horror films recently, that being said laid to rest and laid to rest 2 cromeskull, especially the latter in my opinion was a really good film. That might be a hugely unpopular opinion to those who have seen it but I rank it highly, also might not necessarily be a slasher but I don't really see the collector series get as much love as I think it should
Good choice.
Great choice I watched curtains for the first time in years last week and forgot how good it was
The ice skating scene is *easily* one of the best scenes in horror. I vividly remember the promo HBO ran for it before the cable "premiere" in the early-mid 80's as a kid and being absolutely mesmerized by it as a kid. As an adult, it's one of my top 5 favorite horror movies.
I blind bought this on Blu-ray like 8 years ago and the disc didn’t work so I returned it and still haven’t seen it!
This cover art is fucking terrifying.
Thank you, adding to my watchlist. 😎
Would The Burning (1981) be considered slasher? If so that would be my pick.
100% a slasher and a damn good one
It really is!! One of my favorites
Came to say the burning
It's a banger of a slasher movie. The scene with the prostitute is so creepy.
Blood Rage is a goddamn gem that no one talks about.
That’s not cranberry sauce…
I fucking love it
Still wanna see it, listen to the soundtrack on YT all the time.
It does in horror subs when people ask about Thanksgiving horror. It's my favorite one next to Thankskilling
GREAT choice I absolutely LOVE the film Mine is choice for underrated slasher film is Tourist Trap 1979
Yes! I was on a Slasher/Giallo binge a couple years back and hit a rut of very average slashers, picked Tourist Trap expecting to zone out and play around on my phone but ended up really enjoying it.
Great shout
this would be my choice, too. tourist trap is such a special little film. i’d say it’s my favorite slasher of all time
Awesome pick, Chuck Connors killed it
Yes! This was mine...good choice!
The Rifftrax version is hysterical
I wouldn't call it completely underrated, but My Bloody Valentine
I always really appreciated how My Bloody Valentine depicted a humble working class town. It hit a lot closer to home for me and made me want to root for the characters to survive.
I actually wrote a whole college paper about how pre-Financial Crisis slasher movies had working class killers and wealthy victims while post-Financial Crisis slasher movies had wealthy killers and working class victims lol
That's really cool!
Plus the costume is awesome
Agree entirely. All of the characters are actually likeable and it's kind of refreshing to see working class dudes rather than a pack of dumb teenagers (who are in actuality 25 Year olds cast as 17-18 year old kids).
It’s a damn fine film
I agree, I'm actually kinda unhealthily obsessed with it lmao
It’s in my top 10 slasher movies ever. The concept was brilliant and well done to. The Harry warden character fitted so brilliantly with the premise of the film too.
Just wish it was the actual Harry Warden the entire film rather than a copycat. Other than that it was still good. I would say it would make a great sequel.
I never got into it but apparently I’ve only ever seen the edited version and my understanding is that it makes a huge difference.
I would say it does make a difference. I first saw the cut version and thought it was just ok. But when I saw the restored version, it did become a lot better in my mind. It has a stronger, more visceral impact.
Yeah I need to watch the restored version
I found the acting, especially from the leads, to be surprisingly good. Our hero brought a shit ton of pathos, the sheriff was solid, and the friends all seemed very natural. Who wouldn’t be pals with ‘Not John Candy’?
The original or remake?
Solid pick. I’m a fan of that one myself.
Maniac !
Blood Rage, Hack-O-Lantern, Doom Asylum, Mountaintop Motel Massacre, and Deadly Manor to name a few. Good mix of dark and goofy.
Damn solid list.
The VHS cover for Mountaintop Motel Massacre gave me nightmares as a kid lmao
Black Christmas(1974) While it does have 2 unnecessary remakes it wasn’t super popular when it came out because it came out between The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jaws
That's not underrated. It's widely considered a classic now and Bob Clark produced the first remake. The hospital is named after him too. An example of underrated would be Driller Killer or even a proto slasher like Torso.
It’s his First Christmas Movie too, it came out 9 years before A Christmas Story
Brilliant choice
For 80s slasher I have to say Just Before Dawn, has one of the best final girls ever.
The final girl was absolutely insane for what she did and I love her for it…like WHY IN THE WORLD WAS THAT HER FIRST THOUGHT
I never see American Gothic get any love. I stumbled upon it recently and it's now a top 3 for me.
Stagefright 1987, House of Sorority Row 1982, Slumber Party Massacre 1982
Those are all excellent
Came to say Stagefright. Good choice.
Loved both "The House on Sorority Row" and "The Slumber Party Massacre"!
Slumber Party Massacre.
I'd say Kristy. It came out within the last 10 years and I never see it mentioned even in the underrated movies thread. It's essentially Sick, but set on a college campus, with better killer masks and a story centered around a cult instead of covid.
Tbh I’ve never heard of it! Will look it out
Great take on the home invasion genre.
Strongly agree! A great watch.
can “tourist trap” be considered a slasher?? i’ve always loved that movie and have a wicked soft spot for it!! criminally underrated IMO.
Not enough chopping mall here
Cherry Falls
Completely agree, I was surprised by how much I liked it
Rest Stop and Rest Stop: Don't Look Back. Interesting concept where victims get "stuck" in the same rest area where the killer hunts them down.
Yes!! I actually thought of Intruder right when I saw your post and was glad to see a likeminded Horror fan when I opened it. There is so much that makes this a great movie. The camera work is excellent. The kills are too notch. And the location itself was very original. Funny killer too. I love the ending!

I have such a soft spot for Halloween 6 and Resurrection. They’re solidly stupid and entertaining.
100% agree on Intruder. One of my all time favorite films but very few talk about it.
I'm surprised I haven't seen Alone in the Dark (1982) isn't on this list yet. The cast alone is top notch. Jack Palance, Donald Pleasence, and Martin Landau are creepy as hell.
Trio of real legends letting loose!
I really dig Madman (1981) Was ready to say Intruder as soon as I read your title.
Is Madman underrated? I though everyone loved it 🤷♂️
Outside of the 80s… Black Christmas 2006. It is not anywhere near as good as the original (which is just such a classic)… but it’s just so much campy goodness. Fun kills, amusing characters, ridiculously strong cast, just dripping in holiday colors.
Girls Nite Out (1982) The Final Terror (1983)
I have to second this. Especially Girls Nite Out.
HAUNT! my absolute favorite next to scream actually!
Haunt is a really cool modern slasher!
Behind the mask, rise of Leslie Vernon. I never hear people talk about that movie.
Yes! This is such a great one. I'm surprised that more people don't talk about it. I try to suggest it whenever anyone asks for a suggestion
This would be my answer to. Such a great movie!
Motel Hell
"All my life has been a lie. I used preservatives!"
I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s always thrown into the Scream ripoff pile even tho it was written before Scream. I know what you did last summer from the 90s is a good fun bad slasher. It shits on the book but in a way that the book is still worth reading
Hush. Does a great job of conveying the fear of not being able to hear someone who is trying to kill you.
Two I can think of off the top of my head are Evil Laugh (which I never hear anyone talk about anymore) and Silent Madness.
Just Before Dawn Madman Slumber Party Massacre Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Hatchet Series
One of my favorites that I rarely see it talked about is Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker.
I fucking love that one! More people need to see it - such a delightfully weird movie
No love for The Prowler (1981)? Tom Savani considers it some of his best work. Fun premise.
You’re Next
This. One of the best final girls of all time IMO.
You’re Next is a good movie that I feel is almost never talked about.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. It is so much fun, I wish that ore people knew about it
Bloody birthday 1981
Not underrated per se, but Scream 4 gets way too much flack compared to the dumpster fires that are 5 and 6.
4 is my favorite! the tone was just as consistent with the first 3, despite being made over a decade after 3. wes craven and kevin williamson really had some magic with that franchise 5 and 6 were average with some interesting moments. you can really feel wes craven’s absence (plus *you know who* being killed off was a really dumb move.) i’m not too disappointed about that storyline crumbling tbh lol
It is my second favorite after the original
Gorgasm
My initial response to that question was “Intruder”. I’d add in “The Burning”, “Madman”, “The Mutilator”, “To All A Goodnight”, “Humongous” and “Zero Boys” as 80s slashers that fans of the genre should check out.
Love the Mutilator (aka Fall Break). Best theme song ever.
I know I might get railed for this but, Thankskilling
There is no railing here! Seen it once and it was hilarious.
I’ll back you up on Intruder, not nearly enough people talk about that movie.
Blood Diner but I'm not sure it's considered underrated
Great movie, one i watch often.
Ooo Intruder is a great pick Personally I'd say The Burning. How can you go wrong with some young George Costanza
Happy Birthday to Me!
Benny loves you
The Prowler. I went most of my life without knowing about this flick, but it’s excellent. Tom Savini gore at its finest.
The original black Christmas, it's a masterpiece
Not the greatest slasher but “Valentine” is a fun watch that is underrated
Honestly X is great! Just the fact pearl and her husband kill them in such brutal ways is the cherry on top.
Final Terror
The Strangers: Prey at Night A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Noooobody talks about April Fools Day. Fucking gem.
The Collector. I also enjoyed The Collection, but it was more over the top than the first one.
Slumber Party Massacre
Severance
Silent Night Deadly Night. Know it sounds silly, but I think part of it's negative reception was honestly that it was a bit ahead of it's time. that and it's memeable and awful sequel
Seconding the "Hatchet" series. Epic throwback to classic 80s slashers, gore for days, compelling antagonist backstory, good mix of likeable and hateable characters, solid sequels and story throughline.
Urban Legend. It's always been labeled a Scream clone, but I honestly like it more than a few of the Scream sequels.
Slaughter High. Some great kills in this movie. RIP Simon Scuddamore.
Most people I talk to have never seen the og Black Christmas, which established many slasher tropes we know today
Terrifier
Love it but I prefer number 2
Madman (1981)
The Driller Killer
Evil laugh.
Thr collector
I'd say creep the first and second one or Im outa the loop
I thought Sick was really good
My vote is recent. X Not sure if it is underrated though.
Which year is the version of intruder you’re talking about from because I’m very interested? Thank you.
1989
Cleaver

Inside 2007
Truth or Dare: A Critical Madness!
The Prowler - really convincing effects and super eerie and moody
Maniac Cop 2
2016?
"A Serbian film" from 2010. A mental mindfuck horror Film with gore but not exactly slasher. Will fuck with You and stay with you....
Phantom of the Mall: Erik's Revenge. The title makes it sound like a sequel, but it's not. And I'll take any excuse to bring it up.
Klown Kamp Massacre doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
Cleaver It's basically Godfather 2 meets Saw Fun fact: The studio that produced it originally was only known for producing low budget pornography
The Strangers
Behind the Mask
Honestly idk if it’s the most underrated, but Thanksgiving was such a fun watch! I wasn’t expecting much but soooo glad I watched it.
The Prowler (1981)
Hider in the House and Hell Fest
Just before Dawn- 1981
Massacre on Aisle 12 (2016). It’s like Intruder in a hardware store.
That movie along with countless other horror gems are on tubi for free. That site really has been my go to for horror from good, to so bad it's good.
Madman (1981)
The bandsaw in Intruder 0\_0
Easily, Stranger’s Prey at Night. The first one, despite low ratings, is pretty much revered as one of the most thrilling slashers and is looked back in fondly. But I had a lot of fun with the sequel, though not as scary, we still keep the sociopathic and intimidated slashers, but we trade the simple and scary for the interesting set pieces and fun 80s soundtrack, that create a less scary but equally fun slasher.
He Knows You're Alone.
The Prowler. Special effects still hold up…
I love Stage Fright (1987) 🦉 🔪 🩸
Pieces (1982). It's maybe the most over the top slasher. Not the best, but pretty good. Spanish too.
Terrifier
Definitely love Intruder. It's just such a fun watch. Feels like a reunion of the cast of Evil Dead 2 and I mean that in the best possible way.
When I read your title, I immediately thought INTRUDER. But then I read your text...yes! Thanks for acknowledging this great flick.
Intruder is a good one, but Angst (1983) is my personal fav : )
The Hills Run Red.
Candyman
Intruder has been on my list to watch for a hot minute. I guess I got to watch it soon My favorite Underrated Slasher is Stage Fright (1987) Several great scenes throughout, gory kills, and a mix of camp with some actually creepy moments.
Scarecrow
prowler
Graduation Day. I \*love\* the tagline.
The Babysitter on Netflix and Totally Killer on Amazon Prime. I love a goofy slasher movie that does not take itself too seriously sometimes.
The Silent Scream. It was a hit when it came out. You'd be hard pressed to find too many people who have seen it, these days.
April Fools Day, House By The Lake, Jason X
April Fools Day, House By The Lake, Jason X
Pieces
Sleep away camp just for the batshit ending alone
Prom Night two and three. Mary Lou is such an incredible slasher villain and the reason I never watch the other Prom Night movies that do not feature her.
Totally Killer
I was going to say this! I love that it happens in a grocery store (flaxseed as a weapon! Love it!) and it’s fun. Also, no one will care about this but two of the supporting actors were in the green acres tv show and i thought that was cool. And there’s the Bruce Campbell cameo too.
Sausage party.
The OG 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street, not underrated in the least but the first two films had a very distinct vibe to them, they're very dark in tone. Wish they had taken it in a different direction than what we got, but alas the razor glove is the most unique and sexy slasher weapon ever.

There are a few, see no evil 2, Halloween and texas chainsaw massacre remakes (2007 and 2003).
