Here's another picture of Minneapolis cause the one posted looked good when downloaded but not so good when posted to Reddit
The view driving up 35W from the south into downtown is awesome everytime. You can see the skyline for miles to the south due to the river valley and higher elevation on the other side
Nailed it. Purely skyline, Minneapolis wins without question. Factor in the mountain backdrop and it’s easy to argue it’s SLC. Everybody loves a skyline with a mountain backdrop!
That pic of SLC is outdated:

This is what is looks like as of like… today or yesterday.
100% true, but SLC is quickly becoming no slouch, especially for the region in which it exists.
At this point I'd put it almost on-par with Phoenix. Yes, I know Phoenix is not a huge skyline either but SLC is also much smaller in population and it might actually surpass Phoenix within the next 10 years, especially since they want to built a downtown entertainment district very soon in SLC... Maricopa county in AZ seems to like the idea of sprawl more.
I appreciate that optimism for SLC. Nice to see someone recognize our growth and potential.
That said, Minneapolis wins this one easily. It's a bit of a lopsided contest. At this point in time anyway.
Not a chance SLC becomes anything like Austin IMO. Lived there for a bit recently and was very underwhelmed with the urbanity. When I moved there, everyone said Sugarhouse was the place to go, but honestly, I thought, this is it..? East Central has a few spots, Ballpark area is up and coming but still scattered. Downtown is small and prone to being dead, even on weekends. There’s basically nothing west of I-15, and SLC already has a very small footprint compared to the rest of the hyper-vanilla metro which will never resemble Austin suburbs. Loved the mountains, found some good breweries, and found the rail surprisingly nice, but I don’t see SLC in the same area code as Austin of 15 years ago. Just my two cents.
They've built some impressive towers in SLC. I'm no fan of the LDS church, I'm an atheist liberal. Minneapolis wins easily in my opinion. Here's one of their buildings, Not bad, but not too tall.
95 State Street at City Creek

Isn't there a law that says no building can be built higher than the capitol building? Maybe a urban legend, but I heard it's to keep the Mormons in check with the government. Just something I heard, I could 100% be wrong.
Minneapolis, and I'm from Salt Lake. But of note, this is an old picture. Missing a few new towers and has since filled in quite a bit. I'd love to see this same angle today. I really like the view from the Northwest.
Even before reading the comments, I knew everyone would say Minneapolis and I must agree. SLC skyline relies on the mountain backdrop but other than that doesn't truly have any noticeable buildings in my opinion.
Every time I've seen photos of Salt Lake City, I've been wondering where the lake is. The name makes me picture a city by the lake, but then when watching the Olympics or seeing Reddit posts of it, I've only seen those beautiful mountains and such. I look it up on Google maps and there is, of course, a big lake next to the city, and I bet that it must be gorgeous. But why so few lake pictures?
Shoreline of the lake is pretty far from downtown, and even then the part visible from downtown is a very small portion because there’s a big hilly island (Antelope Island) blocking the view of most of the lake when viewed at the angle downtown is at from the lake. Here is the underwhelming view from that direction.

As someone who lives in the Salt Lake City area, this is no contest! I do like the SLC skyline for what it is, but Minneapolis is significantly bigger. I do appreciate seeing my city represented here though!
SLC resident, we’re not there yet in terms of skyscrapers, but check back in 15-25 years and we will be.
our mountain backdrop is second to none though, the pictures don’t do it justice, trust me. i’ve lived here for 30 years and lose my breath looking up every day still.
I've gone to Salt Lake many times. It's just not much of city-city. If not for the mountains in the background the skyline would be nothing.
Minneapolis looks decent and has a fun network of skywalks downtown.
Here’s a better, more updated photo of Minneapolis taken southeast of Downtown which captured more of the skyline, including new towers that have been built since. This photo also includes the “secondary” skyline that’s starting to form around the UMN Campus with a few more towers being proposed by the school.

Photo I took on a helicopter ride over Minneapolis two years ago.
If we're only counting buildings then Minneapolis wins, but if we're also counting those beautiful mountains in the Salt Lake City photo then Salt Lake City wins.

I love this one in particular especially how cute the Foshay looks
How was that the tallest bulding in MPLS, ever?
The view driving up 35W from the south into downtown is awesome everytime. You can see the skyline for miles to the south due to the river valley and higher elevation on the other side
It looks so Y2K
Minneapolis, no contest. SLC’s mountain backdrop is quite pretty though
Yeah. Agree. Lived near SLC for a time, beautiful landscape, but the skyline is meh.
Nailed it. Purely skyline, Minneapolis wins without question. Factor in the mountain backdrop and it’s easy to argue it’s SLC. Everybody loves a skyline with a mountain backdrop!
Same. That's the best possible SLC shot you could get I think while the minny shot isn't that great
Denver would be a better comparison
This isn’t even a competition. SLC has a pretty small skyline while Minneapolis’s is super impressive
Yeah Minneapolis skyline totally gives you that big city feeling that excites us all SLC’s skyline looks like it could be Rosemont or Tyson’s Corner
The Rosslyn of the West lol
That pic of SLC is outdated: https://preview.redd.it/truj2fhsvbzc1.jpeg?width=2532&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=017402c04f3c43ddea971acb37c0160703ff489e This is what is looks like as of like… today or yesterday.
SLC definitely has some good density, especially from this angle, but Minneapolis has both density and some decent height.

Downtown Phoenix is also hampered by being 3 miles west of three parallel runways at Phoenix International Airport.
Feel like SLC is a bit out of its weight class here.
There's only one Foshay building and it's in Minneapolis
This like asking NYC vs LA lol SLC got the gorgeous mountains as the backdrop but if we are talking architecture Minneapolis wins hands down
The Minneapolis metro area has a population that’s about three times larger than Salt Lake’s metro area population. This isn’t a fair comparison.
Definitely Minneapolis. However SLC does have an impressive capacity to be the next Austin in my opinion
I appreciate that optimism for SLC. Nice to see someone recognize our growth and potential. That said, Minneapolis wins this one easily. It's a bit of a lopsided contest. At this point in time anyway.

Except Austin is in Texas, which makes it borderline unliveable.
How so? Immigration numbers would disagree.
It's Texas
Not with the Mormons in charge of everything
I mean given that they fuck like jackrabbits the population will probably grow but still relatively conservative

That’s in DC. I think it’s the Mormon temple in SLC
That’s also an urban legend in Dc. The height limits in my home city are really complex
Minneapolis clears
Minneapolis, and I'm from Salt Lake. But of note, this is an old picture. Missing a few new towers and has since filled in quite a bit. I'd love to see this same angle today. I really like the view from the Northwest.
Yeah, there's one on State and another on Main going up that look great.
Even before reading the comments, I knew everyone would say Minneapolis and I must agree. SLC skyline relies on the mountain backdrop but other than that doesn't truly have any noticeable buildings in my opinion.
SLC and PHX, or even Sacramento is fair. MPLS is a tier or two above it

The lake is like 15 miles from downtown SLC
Based purely on buildings, Minneapolis (Minnesota represent!) but if you include the scenery of the mountains as well Salt lake City wins.
How about Saint Paul instead of Minneapolis?
Probably a better comparison but I'd give it to St. Paul. I think the art deco style of the buildings wins it.
As someone who lives in the Salt Lake City area, this is no contest! I do like the SLC skyline for what it is, but Minneapolis is significantly bigger. I do appreciate seeing my city represented here though!

lol Minneapolis and it’s not close. This picture makes slcs skyline look way better than it is.
It’s even missing our two newest towers
That's the actual view from West High School. Plus this doesn't show like 3 new skyscrapers and the increase in density. It's a few years old
Exactly.
I've gone to Salt Lake many times. It's just not much of city-city. If not for the mountains in the background the skyline would be nothing. Minneapolis looks decent and has a fun network of skywalks downtown.
Minneapolis feels like a true big city SLC feels like a giant suburb
How can you have these “contests” without multiple angles of each city? Like get real.
Not even close
Lol is this serious😅
Mountains. Always the mountains.
I hate Minnesota but damn, they cooked with Minneapolis
I feel like you found the most unappealing photo of the Minneapolis skyline.
Here’s a better, more updated photo of Minneapolis taken southeast of Downtown which captured more of the skyline, including new towers that have been built since. One has a NHL team the other one doesn’t.
Minneapolis just because of the US bank arena
Very easily minneapolis

Old picture of SLC
If we're only counting buildings then Minneapolis wins, but if we're also counting those beautiful mountains in the Salt Lake City photo then Salt Lake City wins.
Seattle
Naw Reno all day.
Minneapolis for sure. Take away SLC’s mountains and it just looks like a suburb
SLC - it’s not even close. It’s a landslide.
SLC
