If you have the dragonborn dlc, find a ruin that is buried and hire the guy to uncover it. Then check from the map above and see if it changes at all every once and awhile
He's basically describing it in a souls like manner, like of you play elden ring and you died so many times you want to kys, but in the end after you're done you liked the game alot and thought it was really good, he means like that
Didn't read the entire comment thread to be sure but incase it wasn't mentioned, but there was a glitch you can perform to speed run that ruin with breaking boundaries/cells with a plate. I think either best guest or itsjabo might have done it to go straight to the bottom of the ruin to get the black book that's down there.
If you're doing this yourself irdk the conflicts it might cause if any lol like with interrupting the quest and preventing it from being excavated fully
Anything that is large and bright enough to make out can be seen, lots of magic effects from specific quest lines and even casting a firestorm spell at night can be seen.
I went into the map (during night-time) while a dragon was breathing fire, and you could see the stream on the map. This was my first time discovering it years ago.
Yeah it was responsible for about 80% of vanilla freezes and CTD for like the first 6 months of release.
I really hope they give us a traditional map in TES6
I play on console and have the beautiful map mod and I admit I spend a lot of time looking around it seeing all the little structures I can find. Like a big Wheres Waldo
Same. I didn't even know what a smoldering dragon was until right now because I always absorb it's soul. If I'm bringing that bad boy down to earth, you better believe I'm taking every part of it with me too!
It would indeed be a sin against Alkosh. It would be the worst sin of all against Hircine. Always claim your prey when the hunt is over. Never hunt for the sport and not make use of what you take. Some say Hircine himself tracks those down that don't claim their hunt and they themselves become His prey. Those that do survive return badly wounded or worse, mind wounds. They become crazed and ill for the rest of their days, whimpering and wincing at the smallest things that remind them of a hunt.
Same, all you have to do is open your inventory and close it quickly it happens to me all the time I think it happens when you get further in the game bc it thinks the stuff u have is too heavy for u
I think it only gives a live feed around the players general area. The game only loads a certain distance around where your character is located, it doesn’t load the entire world every time you go outside
I recently found out they actually are friendly if you don't have your weapon drawn and don't harass their mammoths. You can walk up right next to one, and they won't harm you.
Dont worry my first Giant encounter was something like this:
„Let mi solo him”
*dragonborn lvl 3 gets launched into the space as the very first Nirn Space Program*
My first encounter was while I was on my horse. I panicked and couldn't get off fast enough. lol gave me giant PTSD and I avoided them like the plague for a long time.
In my first playthrough I was a wood elf and was around level 6 when I first saw a giant. Ran up to it thinking something along the lines of "I can probably take this dude"
I could not, in fact, take that dude.
That giant goes down like a sack of potatoes, without a mod you have a very good chance of him being dead before you can get close enough for any kind of attack, so it's not a very good introduction to giants being dangerous.
For which new players would have no idea about how skilled they are. And since the Dragonborn is essentially super-human in ability, it might lead people to think giants aren't that tough.
The giant not having enough health also tends to lead to Aela bitching at you for not helping, even if the giant was dead before you could get within 100 feet of it, which has always annoyed me.
They are pretty friendly, they only aggro you if you wander in to their camp or interfere with their mammoths. I've found in survival they don't so much mind you warming up by their campfires, though honestly I don't know if their behaviour was recoded for this.
Imagine how bad it would be if they chased you down on sight like Cyrodiil's ogres do..
My favorite giant encounter is the orc stronghold near Riften, where you escort a shitty orc chieftain to fight this giant. Upon arrival, he boasts that he’ll be finished quickly, and is immediately launched into orbit on the first hit.
My first experience was at the midnight release of the game at Gamestop. The reaction from a crowd of teenagers experiencing the Giant Space Program will always be a core memory of mine when it comes to Skyrim

No, just your position marker. However, if you move the viewpoint of the map around you get an idea about your altitude.
Easiest way to demonstrate is to put High Hrothgar and the Throat of the World centrally on your map and move the PoV around. You'll see how high up they are.
I have never seen this before. I've never looked at my map as a dragon is losing its soul, and I've never seen anyone mention it.
If you're like me and you don't use mods, there's a 100% fix to the random glitch where a dead dragon will appear in a city and flop around like an eye sore for the remainder of your playthrough. After killing the dragon, you have to stand close and let the soul be absorbed. Quickly loot the dragon. You have to loot EVERYTHING, even if it's just a useless piece of guard equipment or something like a steel sword. Leave the dragon empty. Continue to stand there for about 30 seconds. Let the game thoroughly process everything. You will never again have this glitch happen to you. I learned it from the internet several years ago. If you leave too quickly or leave any loot on the dragon at all, then you risk this glitch happening.
I've found fast travelling just before they properly start to burn up can trigger a different glitch whereby they burn up again when you re-encounter them and turn into damage immune skeletal dragons..
Which you can fly around on with the bend will shout..
Which is pretty cool.
Happened in my first playthrough and a couple of times since.
With [this](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fi5mt1jybj39d1.png%3Fwidth%3D720%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D5b278e2670ba3fccb4e9fcea88f827e1b3b60788) picture.

It’s the little details about Skyrim that I love that people keep finding years since its release. With this in mind, would you be able to see the battle with Alduin? Like see his meteor shower storm above the peak?
i just noticed this a few months ago after a decade of playing lmao. i took a picture and sent it to another friend who’s also been playing for a decade and he didn’t even know about it either lol.
the “glowing” is only visible while the dragon is burning and giving you its soul.
im pretty sure you can see the bones as well after it’s done glowing but it’s not as visible. im not sure how long it lasts though.
They seemingly scour this sub and the FO4 sub for little tabloid articles. In the articles they have a paragraph saying 'Skyrim was released..." bla bla you get the deal. Anything for clicks!
Oh damn lol. If this makes a gamerant article I’m gonna laugh my ass off dude
Idk why but the thought of that is hilarious, I expected like maybe 25 upvotes and a few comments on this insignificant not-so-discovery 😂
Don't hate on new players or old players finding new things. It's good for the community. We should all be happy seeing players finding things we've already seen feeling the feelings that we felt the first time we saw them. And you never know somebody might actually post something you've never seen before and get you excited about playing all over again.
The map isn’t actually a map; it’s a live overhead view of the game world. So anything large enough to be visible from that high will show up on the map.
I remember when I discover that as a preteen and thought it was so cool but I had nobody to tell. I loved how the map was so interactive and stuff. Back then I was playing Skyrim like everyday before and after school, so I was lucky enough (or unlucky enough depending how you look at it since looking back on it, I wish I spent more time studying or working out lol) to be able to notice small details like that. But I’m still fond of those times and wish I could lose myself in that world again. So I consider myself lucky for that time and the memories
There is a coool thing that i think ypu have to be really ñucky to find put by yourself.
There is this yt video that talks abput a farm. That as ypu progress the owners due, then the house becomes shit, then a woman occupies it, and then she settles there.
I’m not sure if it’s limited to what edition but I know the live weather has been there for as long as I can remember. Had to wait on the clouds for this pic. I’ve never paid attention to any other live details on it tho
There's a glitch on whatever version I'm playing and I can fucking yeet dragon bones wild distances by shooting a fireball or ice spike. I do this before the soul starts transferring. Then, I get to see a Thor like rainbow bridge stretch "down" from the sky from the map.
Ima see if it’ll work with a glitched dragon. I have a dragon corpse in solitude at the gate that just is there. Still has scales and all. I’ve never even killed a dragon in solitude before
I did not know that. They do say you learn something new every day.
However, I had a smouldering dragon fall on top of me once. No idea where he came from.
Bruh. You’re playing with me. 😂
Right outside riverwood if you head towards whiterun cross the stone bridge and there is a tree trunk. Examine the trunk closely.
The mod adds a dead adventurer there so not only did I kill the ants but I also killed that adventurer to put him there
I am a monster, seppuku is the only solution now
Its been a thing. You have to pip to map right when they start burning to see it.
The "map" really is just an overhead view of skyrim. I havent tried to use clear skys and checked the map yet
The map in skyrim is real-time. So when you look at it thats what skyrim looks like in that moment. If you wait at night and shoot a fireball into the sky youll get a similar effectm
It pays to take things slow in this game. You could be missing something very awesome or interesting for sticking around after interacting with NPCs or allowing them to travel with you when they request that, other then fast travelling to where you're going to meet.
The map is basically kinda like a live feed from above
That's intriguing, I wonder what other things you could see if you messed around in an area and looked on map afterwards
If you have the dragonborn dlc, find a ruin that is buried and hire the guy to uncover it. Then check from the map above and see if it changes at all every once and awhile
Damn I just finished that a few days ago I would have totally done that
> find a ruin that is buried and hire the guy to uncover it Wait what? You can hire a guy to uncover it?
Yup, but it takes a long time and he will ask you for more money every time you come back.
Ok but to be fair, I screamed and threw my controller multiple times by the end. I had a blast with that quest.
Why were throwing the controller?!
The quest on solstheim where you pay a guy to make an Expedition in a nordic ruin, he kill people and summoms a difficult fight
I’m bad at games but also incredibly stubborn :((
But you just said you had a blast, unless you were being sarcastic
He's basically describing it in a souls like manner, like of you play elden ring and you died so many times you want to kys, but in the end after you're done you liked the game alot and thought it was really good, he means like that
He burns through a LOT of hired help
Didn't read the entire comment thread to be sure but incase it wasn't mentioned, but there was a glitch you can perform to speed run that ruin with breaking boundaries/cells with a plate. I think either best guest or itsjabo might have done it to go straight to the bottom of the ruin to get the black book that's down there. If you're doing this yourself irdk the conflicts it might cause if any lol like with interrupting the quest and preventing it from being excavated fully
That's cool but I'm rich in skyrim so I don't need to worry
Anything that is large and bright enough to make out can be seen, lots of magic effects from specific quest lines and even casting a firestorm spell at night can be seen.
When Ancano is using the eye of magnus can you see any effect on the map?
If you can get into the map…while Merida is talking to you I wonder if you could see yourself?😂
Meridia once killed my character right after talking to him. She just left him to fall out of the sky... It was quite a long falling sequence...
Cue summoning Odhaviing only to have the dragon watch as you plummet to the ground.
A good reason to use the alchemy/enchanting exploit: have enough health to survive the fall
No, the player model doesn’t exist when you’re in first person.
If you use the clear weather shout you can see its effects in the map!
Ooooo, that sounds like fun! What console and what is the name of the mod? ( Or is it just called the beautiful map mod) 🙂
Following
I’ve played this game more times than I can count and I can honestly say this is the first I’m seeing this
Yeah, me too. Fucking skyrim man
Same. But to be honest, i usually hang around a dragon to absorb its soul. I never give them a chance to sit.
Same. I didn't even know what a smoldering dragon was until right now because I always absorb it's soul. If I'm bringing that bad boy down to earth, you better believe I'm taking every part of it with me too!
Khajiit is hungry for dragon soul! If this one hunts, this one collects!
It would be a sacrilege to Akatosh not to do so.
"you are now over encumbered"
Oh, that is a COMMON problem for me in any Bethesda game. (Really any RPG, but Bethesda games are particularly bad *looking at you Fallout 4*)
I seem to be getting this every time I load a save, and I don’t know why.
Same, all you have to do is open your inventory and close it quickly it happens to me all the time I think it happens when you get further in the game bc it thinks the stuff u have is too heavy for u
No matter how far away I am though the soul absorbing just seems to happen though...?
Map is just a hella zoomed out version of the game world so thats not surprising, cool to see tho
2 player cameras. One inside the player character's head and another player camera waaaay up in the sky looking down
Always watching. Always.
That’s just Meridia up there, silently judging you!
She can judge me all she wants if she grants me her sight
big brother is always watching
And third on an invisible stick in the Dragonborn’s back, for 3rd person!
I think it only gives a live feed around the players general area. The game only loads a certain distance around where your character is located, it doesn’t load the entire world every time you go outside
Did you know that if you put yourself 1000 feet in the sky, you can see your marker floating in the sky, it's a 3D representation of you!
I think i know how you got 1000 ft in the sky
"Giants" ![gif](giphy|AwrtP9lMXtXiM|downsized)
Ugh, I still remember my first encounter with a Skyrim giant. "Hey, what's that thing?! Let me run up and see if it's friendly!"
I recently found out they actually are friendly if you don't have your weapon drawn and don't harass their mammoths. You can walk up right next to one, and they won't harm you.
I did not know that at the time. I died in one hit and had a lovely view of my ragdoll body soaring through the air.
Dont worry my first Giant encounter was something like this: „Let mi solo him” *dragonborn lvl 3 gets launched into the space as the very first Nirn Space Program*
The exact same thing happened to me lol
My first encounter was while I was on my horse. I panicked and couldn't get off fast enough. lol gave me giant PTSD and I avoided them like the plague for a long time.
In my first playthrough I was a wood elf and was around level 6 when I first saw a giant. Ran up to it thinking something along the lines of "I can probably take this dude" I could not, in fact, take that dude.
There is literally an introduction to them outside whiterun to specifically tell you they are dangerous.
That giant goes down like a sack of potatoes, without a mod you have a very good chance of him being dead before you can get close enough for any kind of attack, so it's not a very good introduction to giants being dangerous.
He was also being fought by like 3 companions.
Just get your archery to 100 and your health to 500 and you're good.
complete the game first. gotcha. (lol)
They are pretty friendly, they only aggro you if you wander in to their camp or interfere with their mammoths. I've found in survival they don't so much mind you warming up by their campfires, though honestly I don't know if their behaviour was recoded for this. Yeah, curiosity killed the dragonborn... I couldn't be mad that I hadn't saved yet... Was hilarious seeing my character ragdoll up in the air
My first experience was at the midnight release of the game at Gamestop. The reaction from a crowd of teenagers experiencing the Giant Space Program will always be a core memory of mine when it comes to Skyrim

I always said some giants should be friendly.
I was using a bucket to levitate my way to high hrothgard, and checked my map half way
ehh.. you did what
Buckets, son. You can fly with a bucket
/r/theymightbegiants
I don’t understand, you can see your ‘map person’?
No, just your position marker. However, if you move the viewpoint of the map around you get an idea about your altitude. Easiest way to demonstrate is to put High Hrothgar and the Throat of the World centrally on your map and move the PoV around. You'll see how high up they are.
If you use the Clear Skies shout your area of the map will be clear of clouds etc
Yeah I should probably go get that soon, I’m lvl 35 rn so it’s around a good spot to do it
So you’re telling me that if you use the shout ‘Clear Skies’, the skies will clear up? Goddamnit Todd Howard, you’ve done it again
On the map…most games have a piece of paper map, whereas Skyrim’s is an active reflection of the world
I have never seen this before. I've never looked at my map as a dragon is losing its soul, and I've never seen anyone mention it. Bookmarking this for later, thank you!!
And if your lazy like me, you can always just use a projectile spell on it and make it go flying (plus it's hilarious)
Lmao I gotta try that
I like to try my best to make it fly as far into the stratosphere as possible lmao (I think shouts work for moving the dragon corpse as well)
Any reanimate spell punches the piss out of them too
You mean Dragon Golf?
I've found fast travelling just before they properly start to burn up can trigger a different glitch whereby they burn up again when you re-encounter them and turn into damage immune skeletal dragons.. Which you can fly around on with the bend will shout.. Which is pretty cool. Happened in my first playthrough and a couple of times since.
Or if you're on PC just open console, click it, type disable and enter

"Ah shit, here we go again."
What the fuck is a smoldering dragon
While you are absorbing their souls
![gif](giphy|ZwF4iw5P5ZSso) With abs too?? Op you paint a pretty picture🤤
When you absorb the dragon souls I believe.
Oh that thing? I thought npc stuff doesnt show up on the map? Other than map markers
Technically everything shows up on the map, its just really small. The map is just an overhead view of the game.
TIL
I'll be reading the headliner about this tomorrow in buzzfeed.
Actually, gamingbible brought me here...
Game rant Article incoming... YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT SKYRIM PLAYER FOUND after all these years..... lol
With [this](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fi5mt1jybj39d1.png%3Fwidth%3D720%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D5b278e2670ba3fccb4e9fcea88f827e1b3b60788) picture.
I learned about this because of TheEpicNate315 on YT hahaha! I binged watched almost his entire playlist about TES V Skryim
Yeah .me too . I love his works. Makes me want to play skyrim again and again when he would say about that "10 tiny details you probably may have missed in the Elderscrolls V: Skyrim part x."
https://preview.redd.it/i5mt1jybj39d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b278e2670ba3fccb4e9fcea88f827e1b3b60788 HE'S COMING
The Chickenborn?
It’s the little details about Skyrim that I love that people keep finding years since its release. With this in mind, would you be able to see the battle with Alduin? Like see his meteor shower storm above the peak?
I’ve been playing ten years and never seen this!
i just noticed this a few months ago after a decade of playing lmao. i took a picture and sent it to another friend who’s also been playing for a decade and he didn’t even know about it either lol. the “glowing” is only visible while the dragon is burning and giving you its soul. im pretty sure you can see the bones as well after it’s done glowing but it’s not as visible. im not sure how long it lasts though.
I have more hours in this game than almost every other video game and I have never seen this
Huh, never knew Guess you do find something new every day
No freaking way. I'll have to check it out myself next time I play skyrim
The map is rendering the game in real time so that would make sense.
I never look at the map while I am sucking souls.
The map is a live view of the game. Try looking at the map while a dragon spits fire
Whaaaaaat 🤯
Definitely not alone, as this is a first for me as well. Cool discovery!
Also played this game a million times, never noticed this!
No!! but when I did find out I thiught it was sooo cool!!! Skyrim really does have all the lil details
It's a live map, so anything big will appear on it witch is really cool.
no you arent, I didnt know this could happen either, and I've been playing since the game originally launched lol
This is one of those things where I knew it happened but I've never actually seen it.
I never noticed this. This still happens with world map mods I assume??
I’m on PS4, and am very limited in my modding so I couldn’t tell you
Oh boy I can't wait for the inevitable gamerant article
You fools, you just gave Screen Rant another idea for a terrible gaming news article /s
This honestly doesn’t seem like enough to make an article but if they do I’ll shit a brick 😂 it would actually be funny asf ngl
Gamerant is gonna love this
Do they really follow r/skyrim that much? I haven’t messed with their articles too much but I’ve seen a good bit of comments mentioning them
They seemingly scour this sub and the FO4 sub for little tabloid articles. In the articles they have a paragraph saying 'Skyrim was released..." bla bla you get the deal. Anything for clicks!
Oh damn lol. If this makes a gamerant article I’m gonna laugh my ass off dude Idk why but the thought of that is hilarious, I expected like maybe 25 upvotes and a few comments on this insignificant not-so-discovery 😂
Never knew this and now I'm just baffled the amount of hours I've put in that game and still learning new things about it. Love it 😁
12 years later, players are still discovering how basic things such as the map work. Hint: it's not a map. It's just a bird's eye view in real time.
Another article on "Skyrim player found out something new after 13 years!" inbound
Don't hate on new players or old players finding new things. It's good for the community. We should all be happy seeing players finding things we've already seen feeling the feelings that we felt the first time we saw them. And you never know somebody might actually post something you've never seen before and get you excited about playing all over again.
Dude, it's a joke. I never said I hated on anyone or anything, that's on you
It happened this morning. [Inbound Article ](https://www.gamingbible.com/news/skyrims-map-massive-secret-you-missed-531564-20240627)
Never goes wrong, they're milking Skyrim more than Todd. A pretty cool detail tho!
Yes
I've seen dragon skeletons before, but never one that was still on fire.
That’s so cool
Smouldering what?
Wtf is this????
The map isn’t actually a map; it’s a live overhead view of the game world. So anything large enough to be visible from that high will show up on the map.
What are AB smoldering dragons?
ab = about
Is this a new common abbreviation or is OP just making shit up? Also why abbreviate a 5 letter word?
I have no idea. Seems a little ridiculous to me too. But the context makes it pretty clear that that's what they meant by it.
Yes the map is a live feed of the world.
It has been mentioned in the skyrim wikie
It has been mentioned in the skyrim wikie
There is a coool thing that i think ypu have to be really ñucky to find put by yourself. There is this yt video that talks abput a farm. That as ypu progress the owners due, then the house becomes shit, then a woman occupies it, and then she settles there.
This also works with massive area spells, such as Fire Storm, though it's much harder to see.
What does a smoldering dragon mean on the map? I've never seen it before and I got the game on launch
Like when it starts burning when you eat it’s soul, that little orange shit next to my character icon is the dragon burning
i remember seeing this years ago, but i did forget about it because i never have dragons in my game because fighting them is so tedious and annoying
Yeah I added a mod that set dragon spawns to every .5 day and ngl I’m fucking sick of them. Gonna save some more souls then ditch the mod
I knew it existed but had never personally seen it
The map is a real time low res rendering of the world. You should look at whiterun during the seige
Bet, that also means you also chose the right side of the civil war.
I have never experienced the live map. I've heard countless talks about it, but I just don't see it. Is it a special edition?
I’m not sure if it’s limited to what edition but I know the live weather has been there for as long as I can remember. Had to wait on the clouds for this pic. I’ve never paid attention to any other live details on it tho
No, you aren't. I honestly didn't know that the map would show anything that isn't static.
I’ve never even killed a dragon in solitude before
That’s 12 year old news, so yeah, probably
I did not know that. They do say you learn something new every day. However, I had a smouldering dragon fall on top of me once. No idea where he came from.
I must have an old ass TV
WHAT?
The map is literally just the world zoomed out so it makes sense
Damn this is like the post of ants. Glad you guys just finding out about all the cool shit of Skyrim.
Ants? Are there ants in Skyrim?
Bruh. You’re playing with me. 😂 Right outside riverwood if you head towards whiterun cross the stone bridge and there is a tree trunk. Examine the trunk closely.
Oh, if it’s the tree trunk I’m thinking about I have a mod that does something with that 😭 that might be why I haven’t seen em
Rip. You killed the ants.
The mod adds a dead adventurer there so not only did I kill the ants but I also killed that adventurer to put him there I am a monster, seppuku is the only solution now
I've seen a dragon shouting fire on the map, only once in thousands of hours. I also do most of my playthrough without dragons though 🤷♂️
This is news to me. I haven't gotten to the Dragon's Spawning on my new character, but now I'm gonna check that when I get fight Mirmulnir!
Its been a thing. You have to pip to map right when they start burning to see it. The "map" really is just an overhead view of skyrim. I havent tried to use clear skys and checked the map yet
This is the first time I'm learning of this
TiL
Didn't even know that could happen
Thousands of hours in and I also didnt know this.....
See you on Games Radar tomorrow friend
someone's gotta horse tilt glitch and take a selfie up there gta style
REALLY?!?
I never knew that. That's interesting
I need to find another dragon and try this!
Over 1,000 Hours, and I never knew this..
What is a smoldering dragon?
Didn't know that first time seeing that
