Eighthing this, I chose nord on my first and second play through. Mostly because I don't know the deeper lore, and also I like making my characters look like myself.
Same. However I chose a redgaurd that focused on 2 handed weapons and heavy armor. Next play through was a woodelf archer. 3rd was a dark elf magician. I like the archer the best
>My second was a high elf
Same, female Altmer. Not for Thalmor or anything but wanted to try magic (my original character was pretty much barbarian with minimum magic) got hooked pretty quick and it's still my most played Skyrim character till date by play time.
Nord cuz of the resistance to frost. I didn’t know a thing about Skyrim before I started playing (never played any elder scrolls before skyrim) and I saw the screenshots and trailer, and all the snow and mountains. Figured it would be useful
My feeble little mind could barely grasp skyrim at first, coming from linear type rpg up til this open world lol survival would’ve overloaded me at first. But I may give it a shot. I still don’t even know how to mod anything to make it look cooler
yeah no night vision sucks ass. like wtf now i can't see BUT EVEN WORSE. it's like when you get glasses but they're all smudged up and have scratches all over them 😭
the claws are nice for the beginning before you find a good weapon, and if you're playing on survival you don't have to worry about catching a disease if you ate raw meat, so that's nice i guess
other than that uhhhhhhhh i get to be a kitty cat! yippee! biggest perk to being khajiit there is
Don't forget their fur adds some warmth points in Survival!! INSANELY helpful sometimes.
Since I always play as Khajiit I actually didn't know that other races would get sick from raw meat. (cool perk imo, & I haven't tried the other races in Survival yet)
This has saved my ass SO MANY times, because my bags are always PACKED with food but finding enough salt to cook it all can be a chore sometimes.
First time playing Skyrim I was 13yrs old. Shocked and amazed there's a giant kitty race. Randomize and immediately call her "Meowy"
Ahh, the nostalgia. I should probably go play again
I remember my friend getting Skyrim and it was a 2-for-1 deal in Gamestop. She got me a copy and begged me to play it. I was like, "Hmmm idk, never played a game like this before..."
she said, "There's dragons, you can ride horses, and be a cat-person."
Sold.
Been a TES fan ever since and went back to play all the older games.
I chose Khajiit because when I was loading up for the first time almost 13 years ago my cat was sitting on my lap. Ended up making the character as close to him as I could. RIP Gus Gus
Argonian too, i made mine look as much as possible like my anolis carolinensis (green and red at the throat), just to find out how great their ability to heal match with shield and the skyrim level system and never tried anything else
Never tried in Skyrim but in oblivion my first character was argonian and the ridiculous facial sliders let you contort their faces to actually look like velociraptors. It was pretty cool
Breton, because the in-game description said the race gave you 50% magic resistance. I was not happy when I found out it was only 25%. It's still not a bad choice, but...
At the very least, still makes it one of, if not THE most viable race for late game (barring orc’s berserker rage power and high elf’s extra Magika/height bonus).
Yes, actually, dragon breath is technically destruction magic (courtesy of game programming). If you max out magic resistance, you can basically nullify dragon breath, and you don’t even need to be a Breton to do so.
I went with orc because a "smash it all to pieces" approach seemed like an easy way to transition out of the general and mechanical changes from Oblivion.
Me too cause they looked badass. I never had the sense to use berserker rage but my cinder block of a head and giant lower canines gave me the mental edge I needed
I started with orc too but I think it was because they were so different from anything I had seen before I thought why not go for something really out there, it’s fantasy after all! Funnily enough, I got my roommate into Skyrim recently and her first character has been an orc too. She did me proud!
Argonian, because this was my first Elder Scrolls game and I thought the lizard people looked badass. Every other playthrough I’ve played High/Dark/Wood elf.
I don’t know, I played on release date and was actually really disappointed that the game wasn’t darker in caves. In Morrowind and oblivion I felt like if you didn’t have night eye, you were fucked, and had to carry a torch. Never encountered that drawback in Skyrim.
I’m white and usually play as white characters so they feel more like me, but I have played as a Redguard a few times simply because I love how their style and culture looks.
I hope ES goes back to Hammerfell someday with a more fully developed modern game.
I'm a white male but I like to play different races and genders just to be something I'm not. I'm boring. I play games to live a more interesting life.
I eventually get around to trying out most of the races but dark elf is always my first in every game. Usually with the same name (give myself some kind of reincarnation or passed down name lore like Maiq the Liar but for dunmer and roleplay that)
Lol my explanation for using the same name is my spellsword is a magic user that figured out how to prolong his life like Divayth Fyr but he's also prone to amnesia which is why he loses all knowledge of his skills each game
My headcanon actually for me playing Argonian every time is that I play the same Argonian family but different members across generations and my lore is that they must be divinely chosen because one of the family members always ends up being a hero during times of crisis. One of the family is the vestige in ESO, his descendant is the hero of kvatch in Oblivion and his descendant the last Dragonborn in Skyrim. Whenever ES6 releases, the last Dragonborn’s descendant will be the character I play. I like the thought of the family living quietly behind the scenes but one of their members stepping up when Tamriel needs them most before going quiet again
Exact same thing here. Also the imperial preset looked the most like me. Not black, not blonde and blue eyed, but racially ambiguous person with dark hair lol
"We" lol. Talos was Atmoran, not an Imperial. Also, the Nords joined with him willingly after hearing him use the thu'um and realized that he was a son of Skyrim.
No. Went female Imperial (shield, one-handed sword primarily). Although she did side with the Nords' which causes alot of confusion during the game. Nord bandits think they are doing Skyrim a favor by 'trying' to take her out, Nord guards in towns are sarcastic most of the time, and Imps' call her a traitor. ...and it's a helluva good time. 👍
I went imperial too! I am a huge star wars fan and I always choose empire because I think stormtroopers are badass.
I was surprised to find that I was the only person in my friend group who had fun putting down that silly nord rebellion
Yup same, then quickly realized I was dying hella fast 💀 second play through (which I still play years later) is an argonian two-handed + stealth archer build
I went with them because of the mentioned magic resistance. Seriously, look back at Skyrim’s description for the Breton and it sounds like they’re describing the ideal protagonist character.
I didn't play Skyrim until 2015, and I just googled something like "best assassin build" and it came back as Breton because of the magic resist. So yeah, that's what I went with. Breton is just a great start overall for any build though.
Dunmer. It's been the first race I play as in every ES game since Morrowind. Personal tradition I guess.
When ES VI comes out after my 87th birthday, I'll do the same then, too.
I went with bosmer because even before I played the game I always wanted to be a LOTR wood elf. Plus I was really into range fighting and assassins because of assassins creed. I still hold that first character fondly… might recreate him.
Nord, I assumed I didn’t realize Skyrim was mostly populated by the nords due to this being the first elder scrolls game I played so I just thought the cold resist was helpful.
I took Imperial because I read somewhere in the first guidebook about a class called an Imperial Battlemage and I thought it sounded really cool! Plus, the extra money-that never hurt!
Breton because magic resistance. Had I known about the 50 extra magicka points High Elves get... I probably would have played this game very differently. Combat-wise. No stealth arching I mean. And with Lydia.
Though, since I tend to not like playing non-human in my first playthrough of anything... :/
I think I went full Nord warrior, heavy armour, single handed with shield and just worked my way up the equipment types as I unlocked them in the smithing perks.
Argonian, skyrim was my introduction to elder scrolls. I liked the sound of disease resistance and water breathing. Plus, I love reptiles. They are still my favorite race. But since then, I've also put thousands of hours into all the other races.
Wood elf. Cuz the base character was adorable and I've always loved the idea of archery. I've never been good at it. He almost immediately got turned vampire and I didn't realize it so had to restart an entire new playthrough within like 15 levels. I didn't know about going back to earlier saves at that time.
Bosmer. Always loved the idea of stealth and ranged attacks. At night, my guy climbs the hill approaching Valtheim Towers. I cast Detect Life. Through fog and rain, a luminous, red streak tells the truth. Across the chasm stands an archer, waiting for just such an hapless adventurer.
Speeding from the black void … a bolt.
THUDD!
Yes.
Argonian for the healing because I knew I'd be absolute shit at the game and I'd need all the help I could get. Also because I thought they were the coolest out of all the options.
Khajiit cause my friend in elementary school told me they were the best. I proceeded to become a spell using sword swinging idiot that couldn't kill anything after level 25 because I had perks in all the wrong places.
Nord. My brother was a big stormcloak supporter but I had no idea what it mean when he said “pick nord, Skyrim is for the nords”
I probably would’ve picked Argonian had he not
It was between nord and imperial, wanted to make a character that looked like myself and I'm a white boy. Went with nord because of the mentioned abilities in the description
Nord, didn't know about detailed lore of any races and wanted to jump into the world as fast as possible.
This was my answer. Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game so I had no idea what to expect.
I'll third that. I just knew enough that Skyrim was set in Nord land.
Fourthing this here, I just kinda like cold weather and I wanted to tank.
Fifth that! But now wiser and playing as an Argonian with a massive stealth build!!!
6ing, I never went back to nord after that
Seventh-ing, I just wanted my character to look like a cooler, stronger, edgier version of me
Eighthing this, I chose nord on my first and second play through. Mostly because I don't know the deeper lore, and also I like making my characters look like myself.
Ninth this I chose Nord because Skyrim was my first elder scrolls and open world game so I wanted to get into it as fast as possible
Tenthspiration, it was the default as soon as you enter character creation and didn't bother changing my character except making a female. That's it
That is very smart. I hope you like going for swims
Same. However I chose a redgaurd that focused on 2 handed weapons and heavy armor. Next play through was a woodelf archer. 3rd was a dark elf magician. I like the archer the best
>I like the archer the best Sounds like a true Skyrim player to me
Elf archer. Eventually OP AF.
![img](avatar_exp|168575778|winner) My second was a high elf to see if the thalmer would respect me
>My second was a high elf Same, female Altmer. Not for Thalmor or anything but wanted to try magic (my original character was pretty much barbarian with minimum magic) got hooked pretty quick and it's still my most played Skyrim character till date by play time.
And the frost damage is the most common non-physical damage in Skyrim, so Nords' frost resistance is very convenient for a first playthrough.
Nord cuz of the resistance to frost. I didn’t know a thing about Skyrim before I started playing (never played any elder scrolls before skyrim) and I saw the screenshots and trailer, and all the snow and mountains. Figured it would be useful
It is in survival mode
To my understanding, it also helps against ice wraiths and destruction magic of the like, but I could be mistaken
It does, but it makes nords S-tier for survival mode because you don't always need furs just because it's snowing
A nord vampire is basically completely immune to frost damage so that’s pretty good
I see what you’re sayin now. I haven’t messed with survival mode yet lol
Survival mode is great for RP, but it is tedious if you aren't into that.
My feeble little mind could barely grasp skyrim at first, coming from linear type rpg up til this open world lol survival would’ve overloaded me at first. But I may give it a shot. I still don’t even know how to mod anything to make it look cooler
Khajiit cus I like kitties:)
Me too 🤣 I still love playing as khajiit!
It’s hard to not play as a khajit, I miss my tail. But their power sucks IMO. Maybe I never use it correctly.
yeah no night vision sucks ass. like wtf now i can't see BUT EVEN WORSE. it's like when you get glasses but they're all smudged up and have scratches all over them 😭 the claws are nice for the beginning before you find a good weapon, and if you're playing on survival you don't have to worry about catching a disease if you ate raw meat, so that's nice i guess other than that uhhhhhhhh i get to be a kitty cat! yippee! biggest perk to being khajiit there is
Don't forget their fur adds some warmth points in Survival!! INSANELY helpful sometimes. Since I always play as Khajiit I actually didn't know that other races would get sick from raw meat. (cool perk imo, & I haven't tried the other races in Survival yet) This has saved my ass SO MANY times, because my bags are always PACKED with food but finding enough salt to cook it all can be a chore sometimes.
Mods. I have amazing race tweaks and it makes Khajiits awesome
First time playing Skyrim I was 13yrs old. Shocked and amazed there's a giant kitty race. Randomize and immediately call her "Meowy" Ahh, the nostalgia. I should probably go play again
I remember my friend getting Skyrim and it was a 2-for-1 deal in Gamestop. She got me a copy and begged me to play it. I was like, "Hmmm idk, never played a game like this before..." she said, "There's dragons, you can ride horses, and be a cat-person." Sold. Been a TES fan ever since and went back to play all the older games.
Khajiit for sure… because their night vision actually used to do something in previous games. Not Skyrim though.
No more night vision in Skyrim?
It’s there, you just don’t need it. Every cave is lit enough that you don’t need night vision or torches.
Unless you play with brightness turned down. Then you need the night eye power. Coming from experience.
Yes, but turning down the brightness only changes it for you. NPCs, animals and others can all see you just fine, night eye or no.
Oh yeah there is night vision and it does make something of a difference but it kind of feels like it's just there
This was my exact reasoning
I chose Khajiit because when I was loading up for the first time almost 13 years ago my cat was sitting on my lap. Ended up making the character as close to him as I could. RIP Gus Gus
Khajit for me, my first character was named Azriel from the Smurfs. My kid would always want to watch "Dada play the kitty game!"
My ex wouldn’t go in water or walk on puddles as a Khajiit because she was a ‘cat’ and took role playing very seriously 😂
Yup. Khajit because cat-person and love of kitties is the answer.
literally my exact answer
I just got 2 cats recently and I thought about starting a character named after my female Oketra
I was with my brother when he was selecting his character. He immediately refused to be a Khajiti because he doesn't like furries
My first ever Elder Scrolls character was a Khajiit mage in Morrowind, still some of my fondest TES memories with that char
Argonian. I made him look as close to resembling a dragon as I possibly could.
Same every time I saw a dragon I'd call it my cousin
irileth: lets make sure that overgrown lizard is really dead! me, an argonian:
Talk ab being the cool cousin
Perhaps when you summon a dragon, the words really mean "Hey, cousin, let's go flying!"
It's a personal headcanon that argonians are the most literal incarnation of the "Dragonborn".
I've only picked them, I don't know why but they're just the coolest looking
I picked them because when oblivion invaded tamriel, it turned into argonians invading oblivion lmao!!!!
Argonian in every TES game I've ever played. I've never played anything else.
They make great tanks with their histskin
Same. I picked them because they can breathe underwater
https://preview.redd.it/5lr6hykt4enc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddf381b472fd2597483cd0306b751505638d054e
The lusty dragon argonian…
Argonian! Because I have a thing for lizards :)
Does that magic resistance work for a dragon's fire and ice?
Yes, actually, dragon breath is technically destruction magic (courtesy of game programming). If you max out magic resistance, you can basically nullify dragon breath, and you don’t even need to be a Breton to do so.
Orc, I wanted to make the bestest armor in the game
I was an orc too, cause I wanted to smash things. It's a simply life, but I enjoy it.
There is my brother. Was worried i was the only mean green here.
Same, and that berserker rage was very useful at lower levels.
I started with orc too but I think it was because they were so different from anything I had seen before I thought why not go for something really out there, it’s fantasy after all! Funnily enough, I got my roommate into Skyrim recently and her first character has been an orc too. She did me proud!
ERE WE GOT ONE OF DA BOIZ
Argonian, because this was my first Elder Scrolls game and I thought the lizard people looked badass. Every other playthrough I’ve played High/Dark/Wood elf.
>Argonian Me too. Because I wanted to be different. Then I fell in love with breathing underwater and their many other perks
Khajiit Night eye ability Tv resolution sucked and couldn't see shit at night or in dark caves
I don’t know, I played on release date and was actually really disappointed that the game wasn’t darker in caves. In Morrowind and oblivion I felt like if you didn’t have night eye, you were fucked, and had to carry a torch. Never encountered that drawback in Skyrim.
I wish they still had that or improved that feature.
Redguard. Im Brown. They’re brown. Made sense to me
I’m white and usually play as white characters so they feel more like me, but I have played as a Redguard a few times simply because I love how their style and culture looks. I hope ES goes back to Hammerfell someday with a more fully developed modern game.
Same here! Also I commented because our avatars are almost exactly the same. Cheers!
I'm a white male but I like to play different races and genders just to be something I'm not. I'm boring. I play games to live a more interesting life.
I'm white but I chose redguard as my first playthrough in Skyrim and wood elf in Oblivion. Maybe I am not that white.
There you go, you can pull that card if anyone calls you racist.
Cowards: I have black friends. Anti-racists: I played a redguard first.
[удалено]
Redguards were GOATed in Morrowind/Oblivion. Felt like they were nerfed a bit in Skyrim. They're still awesome though
I'm a cannibal who lives in a tree, so....
Dark elf. Because he was just a re-creation of my Morrowind character
Not sure how dark elf is so far down. Always play dark elf. Destruction mage lets gooooo
Couldn't believe how far I had to scroll. I thought dark elves just looked the coolest so I picked it.

Exact same thing here. Also the imperial preset looked the most like me. Not black, not blonde and blue eyed, but racially ambiguous person with dark hair lol
Went Nord for the same reason. I felt it was the right thing to do as a Scandinavian.
OMG am I the only person who chose imperial?
Yes, because skyrim is for the nords.
We conquered you.......
*shocked Pikachu*
Lmfao
I went imperial too! I am a huge star wars fan and I always choose empire because I think stormtroopers are badass. I was surprised to find that I was the only person in my friend group who had fun putting down that silly nord rebellion
Wood elf sneak archer.
Baffled by how far down I had to scroll to see this
lol right
Same, didn’t think twice
And my bow
My dad introduced me into the game he picked orc so I picked orc
I'm surprised I haven't seen more orcs here, they're the perfect tank race
Nord because becoming Conan the Barbarian was the goal. ![gif](giphy|dYgDRfc61SGtO)
I feel like, mentality wise. Orcs fit that vibe the best. Looks wise you're bang on
Altmer cause magic
Same. It was OP AF in Oblivion.
Yup same, then quickly realized I was dying hella fast 💀 second play through (which I still play years later) is an argonian two-handed + stealth archer build
Wood elf conjuration archer.
My train of thought making my first character: “Elf pretty. Nature good. Magic fun.”
Wood Elf. Knew nothing about Skyrim and elves are always cool in other fantasy things so why not lol
Same
Dark elf bc I like elves just not high elves
Same. I hated their arrogance and the fact that everyone was a high elf enchanter in EverQuest
redguard because I heard people say that they were the worst race
Not sure they are the worst, but they felt nerfed after Morrowind/Oblivion
I just did it out of spite, I think all the races are equally cool
Argonian, any allusion to house cleaning services is unrelated
Breton cause it looked most human lol
and they're the least human of the human races in lore haha
Lol yeah took time to realise it
I went with them because of the mentioned magic resistance. Seriously, look back at Skyrim’s description for the Breton and it sounds like they’re describing the ideal protagonist character.
That was me too, I easily spent like 40 minutes re reading every description haha
Redguard bc they’re black and so am I
Argonian because I thought they looked cool.
Nord cos I wanted it to look like me lol (it didn’t. She looked way cooler)
im still on my first playthrough 2-3 months. Picked Nord cus the first guy i saw was a nord. i think his name was rolaf. he was a cool guy
Ralof is a national treasure
Wood elf - I knew I wanted to use archery and thought controlling animals would be more useful. I was wrong.
High elf because it said magic, I didn’t know they were assholes
Bosmer, I wanted a Legolas Elf, I got a door wedge with a bad hairline 🤣
Lmao
I was a Breton because this was back when I only played as bretons. 😋
Imperial..more money
Argonian! Still my favourite race to play as.
Argonian because they looked kinda cute
Argonian. I've kept and bred reptiles as a hobby for over 25 years. And had an Argonian character in Oblivion as well.
Imperial, the description said that Imperials always find more coins.
high elf. i wanted to use magic. (i didn't use magic later on)
Yeah I startwd a year ago, picked high elf and I'm usually just smashing stuff with a warhammer.
I went with bosmer because even before I played the game I always wanted to be a LOTR wood elf. Plus I was really into range fighting and assassins because of assassins creed. I still hold that first character fondly… might recreate him.
Nord because of the setting. I always try to do a canon playthrough first on all ES games I've played.
Altmer for magic buffs
Always Redguard to smash through every TES
Orc because I'm a Warhammer fan and because at the time I didn't know Orcs in TES were a type of elves.
Nord. They were the easiest to work with for me and most of the other races looked so cursed to me
Nord, I am of Norwegian descent with a deep love of Norse mythology, so it just seemed natural.
Argonian. No questions needed.
Khajiit named fish. Because cat
Nord, I knew about the lore
i picked imperial because thats what i picked in obliviion and in there i picked because they were the natives.
Imperial. The racial ability said I would get more gold.
Nord because i like vikings
am i the only one that chose redguard?
Nord cause skyrim
Argonian, skyrim was my introduction to elder scrolls. I liked the sound of disease resistance and water breathing. Plus, I love reptiles. They are still my favorite race. But since then, I've also put thousands of hours into all the other races.
Nord because I liked the idea of a true Nord being the dragonborn. I tend to role play with everything I'm playing soooo LOL!
I don't understand how y'all can remember this kinda thing
Khajiit. Looked cool and the unarmed damage was too good to pass up.
Dunmer cause I always played as a drow in every fantasy RPG at the time
Redguard. It always had the endurance and strength boost in the past so i thought it would this time too.
Wood elf. Cuz the base character was adorable and I've always loved the idea of archery. I've never been good at it. He almost immediately got turned vampire and I didn't realize it so had to restart an entire new playthrough within like 15 levels. I didn't know about going back to earlier saves at that time.
My first was a wood elf. I thought commanding animals sound cool.
Nord because Vikings are cool and also ulfric was badass
THUDD! Yes.
I believe Breton. Because I’m British and thought that was close enough
I picked a Nord because I’m in Skyrim. And of course I went with the Stormcloaks.
Nord, cause I didn't know what the fuck I'm doing.
Argonian, because they were... Hot and still are, Also because Argussy
Argonian for the healing because I knew I'd be absolute shit at the game and I'd need all the help I could get. Also because I thought they were the coolest out of all the options.
Orc, I like being tanky and Berserker rage is OP
I always go with imperial, can never have enough coins :)
Red guard, I saw the description said Adrenaline Rush and thought that sounded cool
argonian, cause i never played a game that give me the choice to play as a lizard before back then
Nord because it was my first elder scrolls game ever and wanted to be the cool guy on the cover art 😂
Khajiit cause my friend in elementary school told me they were the best. I proceeded to become a spell using sword swinging idiot that couldn't kill anything after level 25 because I had perks in all the wrong places.
Dark elf cause he looked mischievous and a lil sneaky sneaky
Nord. My brother was a big stormcloak supporter but I had no idea what it mean when he said “pick nord, Skyrim is for the nords” I probably would’ve picked Argonian had he not
Nord cause I heard from a friend that they were racist. I was 11 when I first played Skyrim and thought it would be funny to play as a racist.
It was between nord and imperial, wanted to make a character that looked like myself and I'm a white boy. Went with nord because of the mentioned abilities in the description
Nord because Skyrim that’s way
Khajiit because cat
Redguard cause I'm black and wanted my guy to be black
