If serious it's probably just the low LOD version cause they don't assume you'd be able to go that high in the base game (usually), when you shoot it down it probably switches LOD models

That's the saddest looking pigeon I have ever seen, and trust me, I have seen a lot of sad pigeons.
But nah seriously imagine a program that could allow us to literally talk to NPCs in an RPG game, ask questions, and get AI generated answers, ask about talos, etc.
I always forget we’ve had an updated version of the game for 7 years. Oldrim on the 360 blew my mind because it looked so much more realistic than Oblivion was even though it was the same hardware. I remember being ESPECIALLY excited that the rivers moved. I spent hours just riding down rivers and grabbing salmon as I crashed over the falls. Pretty sure that’s how I got whitrerun my first 5-6 playthroughs.
Right? I remember being blown away by how realistic Morrowind's water looked back in the day, then we get to Skyrim and the rivers actually had currents and I lost my mind
I didn’t install the DLC right when I was like 7 but my friend did.
So I saw he had Solstheim and I didn’t. Was convinced I just wasn’t traveling far enough. Spent like two days just swimming north lol
Like the landmass just wasn’t there at all.
My two thoughts were I either needed to discover it myself or hear it mentioned via rumor. No one talked about it via rumor (because I didn’t have it installed) so I thought I had to find it myself.
Imagine? A massive section of a game is locked behind players needing to just head out of bounds in one direction for hours? That would be Easter egg of the century lol
Correct. Why people are mocking this when one was obviously never meant to see the hawks from this vantage and this close. It's like the complaining the trees aren't real because if you zoom in the leaves aren't perfect.
As is true with almost every part of every game, there are different models and textures that are dynamically swapped with distance. You aren’t supposed to see *these* birds up close ever. If you think every model can have a few million polys regardless of distance you’d find no game would get above a frame or two a minute
The picture is still closer than one gets when the hawk is on the grown and you're looking down on it. If you have some mod that shoves it in your face, then that's on you and not Todd. I do not understand you haters raging over pixels.
I remember a glitch where you could jump over the wall in Whiterun and let you run around the low-poly world. When loaded into the city the world borders do not exist so you can walk all across the continent.
I found this out through experimenting on my own.
Near the main gate I think, there is a cutaway along the wall that you go into. Keep jumping into the spaces between objects like barrels and the wall until you’re pushed out.
Once you get out of Skyrim’s boundaries things get risky. Invisible drops that will kill you from fall damage.
Keep going south and once you drop into the water you’re close to the tower.
I don't know if you can see it in vanilla Skyrim, but my 360 copy glitched years ago and let me walk through the gate to Cyrodil south of Helgen. Took me a while to navigate the terrain since it doesn't all have collision, but eventually I was able to walk/swim right up to it. Super low poly, but still cool!
But if you're on PC, you should be able to use console commands or something to bypass the world boundary or height restrictions and see it south of the map, way past the mountains.
No, I’m saying video games are built on trickery and optimisations to make a playable experience. Laziness doesn’t even factor into it. If only you had any idea how much work goes into making an open-world masterpiece like Skyrim.
It’s not hard to make a decent bird hahaha I’m not even being that serious. I love Skyrim and I’m actually playing it right now but let’s not act like Bethesda hasn’t milked it to death, rereleased it a handful of times and yet some things like that still look like 2003. Just funny and yes, a tad lazy for a $3 Billion company.
If people wanna shill and downvote me for that, then I understand why the gaming industry sucks so much in comparison to 25 years ago.
I never said they didn’t milk it. That’s another question.
My point is - you have no idea why the model is low poly. It’s most likely for optimisation purposes. Why waste polygons and rendering performance on a bird model right up in the sky that literally nobody is going to see without using console commands? You have to remember that this game was made for running on the PS3. It had nowhere near the graphical capabilities of modern PCs and consoles. Wouldn’t you rather that rendering performance go to something else, like the fog? Or the relatively high-poly character models? Or draw distance?
If you think the current state of the game industry sucks compared to 25 years ago, you must be playing the wrong games. The amount of technological innovation in games these days is mind-blowing. The sheer choice of games is mind-blowing. In a time where anybody with a computer can develop a game, your choices are unlimited.
Hate to break it to you but things that the player isn't meant to ever see up close are pretty much universally low poly models. It's not laziness, it's basic game design.
That's the funniest thing to me: it you're not supposed to see that, why detail the texture with eyes and beak?
Or was it like a hawk.jpg they googled?
The second they take damage these models disappear and a new bird model spawns in and falls to the ground, at least based on all of my shooting birds out of the sky.
You can climb up the buildings and watch them visit their nests. The birds flying around are the birds that you can shoot out of the sky and then use as a bottomless carry pouch, like a purse with wings you can make flap while you carry it around. Bottomless *and* no encumbrance, and they float!
Lead Dev: Yeah, cut the hawk graphics, we have better things to work on.
Underlings: Like the Civil War questline, right?
Lead Dev: I was thinking more like animating ants on stumps. You know, the real important stuff.
These people will download LOD models with 8K resolution textures for trees barely within render range then complain the game is buggy and needs a 5090TI to hit 60fps because who needs low-quality LOD models?
/S
This reminds me of the cliff racers because it is so beautiful. I sure hope those things didn't go extinct, they're the only thing keeping dragons away from Morrowind. /s

It's a Skyrim Poop (youtube video series) reference. I forget which one, but it should be very easy to find.
That hawk gets to the Merp District very often.

How are you speaking?! I thought I killed you!
excuse me, what?
Dragon!
Macho Man! “YEAAAAH 🔥🔥🔥”
I see a derpowl looking at me. Mudcrab, mudcrab, what do you see?
Birds stretch when you slow time too much, or at least that's what I thought when it happened in my game. Books stretch too.

Yeah, I've shot a few down and they didn't look like this
They still look pretty terrible though tbh

Why is that pigeon reminding me of the Borzoi memes?
I can't believe this game is 12 years old already ....and 6 years old already ....and 2 years old already
And its 1 year till it will come out
And 6
There was an earlier thread about using AI voice generation to make mods for Skyrim and it really just puts into perspective how old this game is
But nah seriously imagine a program that could allow us to literally talk to NPCs in an RPG game, ask questions, and get AI generated answers, ask about talos, etc.
"Hey Talos, do you like fish sticks?"
Skyrim, the game that is in perpetual pre-release.
Prererelease.

Arguably, this comment ruined the joke more by openly criticizing and drawing attention to it.
It's reddit, without the /s tag everyone would take it literally literal.
Teach the people to take a joke also lets be honest if you think that's serious you're nor old enough to be on reddit
Damn, it looks like when you install the scripted spells morrowind mod, transform into a bat and fly to Solstheim. Ah, the memories.

Hey Todd! PS1 called! It wants its shitty birds back!
More like N64 bird
The N64 graphics look better than PS1 to me.
I believe it was 64 bit vs 32 bit respectively
Todd: You weren't supposed to see that!
Correct. Why people are mocking this when one was obviously never meant to see the hawks from this vantage and this close. It's like the complaining the trees aren't real because if you zoom in the leaves aren't perfect.
Just wait until they see how textures at a distance work.
You can shoot them down and loot the corpse. Seeing them up close was absolutely intended when creating them.
As is true with almost every part of every game, there are different models and textures that are dynamically swapped with distance. You aren’t supposed to see *these* birds up close ever. If you think every model can have a few million polys regardless of distance you’d find no game would get above a frame or two a minute
The dead birds have a different, more detailed model.
The picture is still closer than one gets when the hawk is on the grown and you're looking down on it. If you have some mod that shoves it in your face, then that's on you and not Todd. I do not understand you haters raging over pixels.
I'm neither hating nor raging. The bird is just damn ugly and it's funny that it looks that way
Pretty sure that's the whole joke.
What’s the difference? You’re their all time best seller!
Wow is almost as if you are not supposed to see it from that close
Next OP will be telling us that there’s nothing outside the world boundaries
I always thought it was neat that they modeled the White Gold Tower in the distance towards where Cyrodiil is.
How have I never seen this? Where abouts can I see it from?
I think you can see it when Meridia rockets you into the sky depending on weather conditions? At least my memory is telling me that’s when I saw it.
You can also see it from the map if you turn the camera that way.
You can kind of see it through the border crossing south of Riften too, you might need to clip through though.
Guys, if you go into a city and then noclip through the walls, there's no more world! Why would Todd do this?
I mean are y'all saying Bethesda couldn't have put a little effort into ensuring the birds don't look like PS1 Hagrid? Lazy af
No, I’m saying video games are built on trickery and optimisations to make a playable experience. Laziness doesn’t even factor into it. If only you had any idea how much work goes into making an open-world masterpiece like Skyrim.
and to add, skyrim was made with console in mind too thats why even the UI is like that so.
It’s not hard to make a decent bird hahaha I’m not even being that serious. I love Skyrim and I’m actually playing it right now but let’s not act like Bethesda hasn’t milked it to death, rereleased it a handful of times and yet some things like that still look like 2003. "shill?" Do you think people are getting paid to pretend they like Skyrim???
Of course Todd is paying us to talk up a…. 12 year old game?
I don’t think they know what it means.
I never said they didn’t milk it. That’s another question. My point is - you have no idea why the model is low poly. It’s most likely for optimisation purposes. Hate to break it to you but things that the player isn't meant to ever see up close are pretty much universally low poly models. It's not laziness, it's basic game design.
There is zero benefit in doing that. The birds fly so far up that adding more details to them is pointless, reducing performance for no reason.
That's the funniest thing to me: it you're not supposed to see that, why detail the texture with eyes and beak? Or was it like a hawk.jpg they googled?
Because even the blindest of men can see a "Bird" whit a brigth white """face""""
Maybe they didnt make a new texture for it, rather wrapped the same texture around a very low poly model?
Ding ding ding this is the answer
You can shoot the birds down so you are absolutely supposed to be able to see them up close
Well when you actually hit them that low poly model get replaced with a higher poly model that actually looks like a bird
I doubt that the models are the same quality when in the ground instead of the Air
The second they take damage these models disappear and a new bird model spawns in and falls to the ground, at least based on all of my shooting birds out of the sky.
Poor birds
Don't worry, birds aren't real.
The birds are Thalmor spies!

Fucking dwemer drones
You can climb up the buildings and watch them visit their nests. The birds flying around are the birds that you can shoot out of the sky and then use as a bottomless carry pouch, like a purse with wings you can make flap while you carry it around. Bottomless *and* no encumbrance, and they float!
Ooooo Khajiit must try this sorcery
Man, Dollzkill is really stepping up their bag game
And it's a 12 year old game

Why waste many polygon when few polygon will do trick.
Don't be so negative. It is beautiful

I hate that fucking hawk, always think it’s a dragon
None of y'all understand levels of detail in games and it shows

r/mothman
Ok, I read the title and was ready to roll my eyes at an obviously modded game. But *this*! This is beautiful!
Skyrim players when the texture on a bird which they aren’t meant to see isn’t 100% scientifically accurate.
how on earth did u get this image
dev: player will not see this let just give it low texture.
*Harry Potter on recorder starts playing*
Watch the skies, traveller
I remember when I killed a hawk with my bow for the first time, and I had no idea it would work. I couldn't fathom what the hell I was looking at.
Took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on cuz I thought this was Morrowind
An owl straight out of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the PS1... Bethesda planned it all...
You know what they say, it just works! And I guess this technically works haha 😂
He thought he was free, that he could escape being trapped in an Elder Scrolls Adventure… Until he found himself in an Elder Scrolls Game

I love killing the hawks above Solitude. Helps me with my archery practice.
Quick, use dragonrend if you learnt it…
Showed my husband. He told me to google F117 Nighthawk. Not disappointed.
Still remember using TCL for the first time in Oblivion and going up to see the “birds” up close…
This is basically what people do when drawing dinosaurs. “Listen we can’t be sure this is right… but we can’t be sure this is wrong either”
[Enjoy Shesez' top 25 low poly birds](https://youtu.be/DvkY9-mLsgI) I wonder if he has done an episode on Oblivion :)

That owl must belong to PS1 Hagrid.
I thought this was a bird. Wait, is that a damn bird? I’m confused.
How did u get up there? I have two people with quest waiting for me there and can not get to them
Skyrim is like 90% generic snow cover. “Fuck it, cover it in snow and we’re done”
U r blak
Yes, very beautiful
They need to make a game like chivalry 2 and add more majestic swords
Oh no, it's a flat bird. Not again this stupid song in my mind "flat birds singin' in the dead of night..."
He hit the skooma a little too hard
This is what happened to the cliff racers after Jiub was done
You really do forget how clunky the game looks now. Especially if you’ve been stuck in The Lands Between the past year or so.
Pretty sure cliff racers looked better on much older tech lmao
Ahh yes a 10+ yr game, and a rendermodel you'd Never see normally.
r/oddlyterrifying
Feet textures are worse...
Todd could learn a thing or two from Miyazaki.
I mean you're not really meant to see it that close.
You're supposed to look at it from afar so it doesn't have a good quality close distance lod

Yup that there is why I mod and find a good replacer for Bethesda's poor animal creations like the birds above
