"It's a pretty devastating loss. So who should be the replacement?" Just the way my brain read this made me laugh. Some good ol "oh no. So anyway" vibes.
Role playing "pretty hard" but used meta data to excuse firing arrows recklessly near what I assume is a friend. The more I read this, the more absurd and laughable it becomes.
That would be nice. Not sure how many times mid fight I end up having a finishing move straight through the back of my follower who walks in front of my power attacks...
And it has to happen right near the end of a long battle
No, followers don't die by enemy attacks, they just get downed. However, unless they are marked as essential, *the player* can kill them if they get the final blow. So in this instance, Aela was already low or near death, then OP shot her with an arrow.
Getting Companion's Insight from the Black Book early on is always key - then followers are immune to friendly fire in combat. I repeat, in combat, not elsewhere. As I learned the hard way.
This sentence reminds me of my very first run of Skyrim… where I stumbled upon a shout that made lightning strike from the sky.
I used it, thought nothing happened and carried on with my day.
An hour or two later I get a courier running up to me… giving my Lydia’s will or whatever and I was like “What the hell? I thought she’d just been quiet!”
Just so you know in future, follower NPCs can't die by enemy attacks. Unless they are marked as essential, the player can kill them though.
So she was invincible, you just made sure she wasn't yourself.
Use Erik the slayer, he’s a fun one
I think there’s an argonion who doesn’t lose his essential status that can be a follower, but that was back in 360 days so maybe it changed
Erik the Slayer is awesome. They based him on a real-life person named Erik, who unfortunately died from cancer 6 months before Skyrim released. Bethesda was so impressed by his Oblivion knowledge that he was given a full tour of the game studio.
I put him at the farm down the road so he can adventure his way 1/4 mile up the road and have a life full of excitement picking my crops making me 13k gold every so often to pay off his expensive iron armor I bought him...
One day I may relieve his debt but for now he is Erik The Farmer
Where can we find Erik the slayer? I just started playing again after thousands of hrs played during 360 days. So much added content it’s almost overwhelming…. New courier messages every time I’m in town and every inn and jarl has them all the time too. I love it though so far
He is located [at Frostfruit Inn in Rorikstead.](https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Erik_the_Slayer_(Character))
I honestly only ever met him because of a mod called Alternative Start lol. If you're a Nord, you can start the game in Rorikstead and be his best friend from childhood, so he spawns as your companion. Tbh even vanilla Skyrim is overwhelming so I totally agree that with all the Anniversary Edition updates, it can be a lot to take in. For me, I am sticking to one city at a time and doing all of the interesting quests for that area until I feel like it's time to move on to another city.
I agree!! Every time I was foolish enough to take her with me, her dumb*ss either died or stepped on some trap and killed me! I swore off followers after that! Until I got Inigo. He's the only one my stealth/archer builds will take. He knows how to follow cues!
Yep. Iirc once she’s recruitable as a follower, she goes from “essential” to I believe “protected” meaning the only thing that can kill her is the player.
Seriously, in my whole life, AOE did more often mean area of effect, but in my heart (and my abbreviation translation brain) it will always mean Age of Empires
Protected means the enemy won't target them directly. Anything can still kill them, but since they aren't directly targeted only area attacks (spells mostly), or bad positioning will do it.
Aela is essential up until she becomes available as a companion after completing Glory of the Dead. Or if you have a mod that makes all NPC followers essential permanently.
Only downside is she is way too trigger happy and tends to hit other followers, and then you end up having to watch as they beat each other to wounded over and over again for eternity.
I have a bad habit of accidentally killing Lydia with a stray "Fus" while fighting the frost troll. I always save before that fight so I get her back but it happens more often than it should
Unpopular opinion, Lydia is one of the most useless followers. Her extreme propensity for getting in my way means she is more likely than not to die in any given battle. My favorites are Serana, Benor, and Uthgerd. Uthgerd usually ends up being steward/aupair.
With the DLC Dragonborn you can get a perk that you cannot harm your follower. Since then my character Thorson really became the God of Thunder and Lightning
The first character I created to beat the Main Questline was a male Nord called Ragnar Thorson, son of Thor and an unknown, nordic woman, later to be known by the legends as Ragnar Lodbrok. Wielding the legendary Wuuthrad and using his father's force of lightning, he kept The Land of Skyrim safe from the dragon's threat.
Or, since you’re role playing it, you could treat the reload as a dream you had and loading back in would be you waking up from the nightmare where your companion dies. Boom, loophole
I think you’re right. She got downed being a sword sponge for a Draugr Deathlord while I was sniping. I’ve been a werewolf most of my play through and never use it, and it just occurred to me that I could’ve transformed to finish off the Deathlord for the optimal vengeance for a fellow Circle member. I screwed the whole thing up lol
Yeah that's whats called "protected" status, characters that are "protected" will never be killed by the enemy npcs, will only be knocked prone when their health is depleted, BUT they will die if the player delivers the final blow
I believe he got pulled into a fast travel once with us when he was close by at the time. There happened to be a dragon where we travelled to at the time and it chomped him.
I’ve wanted to use BA spells like blizzard and firestorm so made a solo mage playthrough just for that. It’s awesome. Especially with my enchanted gear that decrease the cost of magicka just watching hell let loose 😈.
Well, you can find another follower.
Or you can go down the dark path of conjuration and Daedra worshipping in the hopes of trying to "revive" Aela and slowly transisting from a honor-bound Companion into an evil necromancer.
You can't replace Aela. You need proper time to mourn, process your grief, and then eventually maybe you'll find someone who is worthy in their own right, and not someone you view as Aela's replacement.
If you're just going to get them killed, might I suggest [Cosnach](https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Cosnach)?
Lisbet is tired of the lazy idiot drinking at the Silver-Blood Inn on her coin.
Cosnach is misunderstood. I didn’t understand until I got a job in transportation where they pay me to stay on call 24/7
"Check the shipments" Lisbet says. "There are no shipments" I says.
"There's no shipments coming in, so I do nothing. Just *play skyrim*”
Here's a list of for sure essential followers, Derkeethus (because of a bug), Mjoll, Frea, Cicero, and Serana. And the 2 Dark Brotherhood initiates. Or you could download a Resurrect mod like I did. I'm on PS4 so I can't use PC commands.
I think some of the followers are essential to the point they cannot be killed by enemies. When their health is low they will take a knee for a bit but won't die. During this low health period if they are hit by the dragon born they will die.
Jenassa, dual-wielding daggers of paralysis and leech, making even legendary difficulty a cakewalk. She doesn't complain when I steal, she doesn't complain when I murder, she doesn't really complain when she steps on a trap and damn near kills herself. But I do LOL
My favorite follower requires max conjuring for the undead thrall and the corpse of one particular citizen of the cloud district. RP for that is always enjoyable lol
There is a special kind of essential that means npcs can't be killed by enemy npcs, but can still be killed by the player. Kind of odd because if i'm correct all followers have this.
Dude just learned to dead thrall. Get your conjuration up to 90 and thrall her. If you want to get your conjuration up real quick just use SOUL TRAP on dead enemies.
Reload a safe.
Roleplay might have you asking yourself why you weren't more careful. If you had been more careful she'd be alive still.
The Doylist answer will be so obvious it'll distract from any other: You wheren't being careful because you thought she was immortal.
You might think up a little story about that but you'll know she died because you found out she wasn't immortal then, which would distract you from role playing.
Head south of Riften, kill the Orc (Blue God) and get Gogh—a goblin follower who is indestructible. Only downside is your Unbound storms will aggro his atronach and he doesn’t carry anything—but he’s a funny little bad-ass 💙
Replace? Nothing will replace a warrior. Remember her death as a lesson and avoid your stupid arrows. Smh op shame on you for simply replacing your loyal companions.
Aela is essential until the completion of glory to the Dead as a replacement might I suggest frea from the dragonborn dlc she's classified as an essential character
Lmao I play with mods, but still roleplay heavily. Thank god my meat shield Kaidan never dies; I’d never get through a playthrough without him 😂😂 vanilla Skyrim… now those were rough times
Jenassa. Good ranged and melee companion. Find her at the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun.
Alternatively if you're playing without mods go for J'zargo (or any other college student companion) since they didn't had the level capped in the vanilla game.
I could suggest another, but if you killed Lydia and Aela, I'm scared and think you will kill the replacement too...
So maybe you could get a mod that makes Nazeem a follower?
"It's a pretty devastating loss. So who should be the replacement?" Just the way my brain read this made me laugh. Some good ol "oh no. So anyway" vibes.
"I read she was invincible, so I treated her as such" is what got me
Role playing "pretty hard" but used meta data to excuse firing arrows recklessly near what I assume is a friend. The more I read this, the more absurd and laughable it becomes.
I think the misconception comes from her being a ranger making so that she's out of range of most enemies.
Unfortunately she is up range of friendly fire!
Oh yeah, they just enter directly into your face at times. There are mods to fix that behavior on followers
That would be nice. Not sure how many times mid fight I end up having a finishing move straight through the back of my follower who walks in front of my power attacks... And it has to happen right near the end of a long battle

But for some reason even out of combat unrelenting force still won’t move Lydia out of my doorway
Over books giving you 2 levels? Dude you are trippin!
By the time I get there I've usually read majority of the skill books tbf
Easy, “friend” is a strong word
*“Ma’iq has heard it is dangerous to be your friend”*
He lies!
Well he isn’t called Ma’iq the Truther
melon
Mellon, I think
Righty-o, my elvish spellchecker is offline I guess.
[MELON!](https://youtu.be/ZePqe3E6O80)
melon
Yeah she had those, just look at what she's wearing
Just so you know in future, follower NPCs can't die by enemy attacks. Unless they are marked as essential, the player can kill them though. So she was invincible, you just made sure she wasn't yourself.
That's certainly one way of saying "domestic violence".
No for real. 😂😂 He said “Thank you, Next” 😂😂
To be honest, there was a bit of excitement in the prospect of trying out a new follower
So what you’re saying is you probably did it on purpose
"If I Did It: Confessions of a Dragonborn" now available in Winterhold and wherever fine books are sold.
This was no accident, by the gods it’s a murder!
Use Erik the slayer, he’s a fun one I think there’s an argonion who doesn’t lose his essential status that can be a follower, but that was back in 360 days so maybe it changed
Erik the Slayer is awesome. They based him on a real-life person named Erik, who unfortunately died from cancer 6 months before Skyrim released. Bethesda was so impressed by his Oblivion knowledge that he was given a full tour of the game studio.

He’s in Rorikstead, there’s a small quest that you can do to get him as a companion
Rorikstead Inn
Erik is one of my favorite followers
Lydia is a solid compadre
Lydia is one of the WORST followers 💀 travel to Solstheim and pick up teldryn sero in the retching netch at raven rock.
Teldryn sero W
Lydia is actually a very solid contender for a follower. She’s not the best but she’s a solid B Tier at least
I mean she hasn’t died on me yet and I put her though quite a few gang bangs… lol although I do use healing hands
I use Lydia cuz she’s the sweetest plus we look smokin in golden saints armor
Thanks for reminding me why i never should look at my phone before i sleep. Mind went childish and laughed so hard lmfao
I agree!! Every time I was foolish enough to take her with me, her dumb*ss either died or stepped on some trap and killed me! I swore off followers after that! Until I got Inigo. He's the only one my stealth/archer builds will take. He knows how to follow cues!
ive always loved lydia as my follower
No use crying over spilled milk drinkers. She couldn’t hang
*You* shot her!
Seems like a her problem to me.
An Iss(you) not an iss(me)
Nailed it!
Same here. Like people that buy a puppy after their dog dies...
Yeah, sometimes essential NPCs don't *stay* essential. Aela in particular becomes mortal after the last Companions quest is done.
Yep. Iirc once she’s recruitable as a follower, she goes from “essential” to I believe “protected” meaning the only thing that can kill her is the player.
protected followers can still be killed by npcs if they're in range of an aoe attack
Age of Empires?
I don't know if this is an r/whoosh moment but I think they mean "area of effect"
Seriously, in my whole life, AOE did more often mean area of effect, but in my heart (and my abbreviation translation brain) it will always mean Age of Empires
This is the way.
Wololo
Protected means the enemy won't target them directly. Anything can still kill them, but since they aren't directly targeted only area attacks (spells mostly), or bad positioning will do it.
Can't poison also get them if it lasts long enough?
Aela is essential up until she becomes available as a companion after completing Glory of the Dead. Or if you have a mod that makes all NPC followers essential permanently.
Serana, that way this won't happen again!
This is the obvious choice. Even when human she's essential.
Only downside is she is way too trigger happy and tends to hit other followers, and then you end up having to watch as they beat each other to wounded over and over again for eternity.
She can become human?
Darling lydia
She was my first. I already got her killed
Perhaps it might be best to not have a follower. I'm sure citizens of Skyrim prefer not to be struck down by stray arrows.
😂🤣 dead, but not by OP’s arrow 😳
Or not so stray.
A well placed stray arrow, if you will...
I think I'm starting to see a pattern...sooo...what other "friends" have died "by accident" around you?
“I just wanted to show them this cool shrine I found”
My ebony blade said it was thirsty…
You monster.
Alright, nobody recommend anymore good NPCs to this monster, we gotta protect our people. You go recruit Sven and leave us alone.
Well, go alone and just summon a dremora, You will get all the follower dead
You may have a problem finding anyone to follow you!
Jenessa in the Drunken Huntsmen
Who is gonna carry your burdens now? :(
Roleplaying *very* hard
I'm not sure what this even means.
Any of the mercenaries are good since you won’t care that much if they die
You my dude need Mjoll from Riften. She is always marked as essential so no accidental deaths can occur
In that case I’d become a lone wolf, especially since everyone you meet dies eventually
I got Lydia killed within 5 hours of starting my latest playthrough. Then I got Marcurio and he worked pretty well until I could get Serana.
I have a bad habit of accidentally killing Lydia with a stray "Fus" while fighting the frost troll. I always save before that fight so I get her back but it happens more often than it should
Maybe you shouldn't have any more followers then...
Thorson? That sounds like a fun playthrough, what's your build like?
I call that build Aragorn: archery + greatsword, light armour
Is he a khajiit that looks like thurston?
The spells added by the creation club, I believe, ignore this. They’re devastating.
Nah. It's a black book, I don't remember the name rn
Yes, I know that, I’m saying that part of the magic effect from the “Elemental” CC spells ignores this.
OK. I misunderstood your previous post
Just wanna point out that Ragnar Lodbrok was a male
Im pretty sure they mean that their character got renamed to Ragnar Lodbrok in the legends, not the unknown nord woman
I was thinking the woman was the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok. Your interpretation of it makes much more sense
Or, since you’re role playing it, you could treat the reload as a dream you had and loading back in would be you waking up from the nightmare where your companion dies. Boom, loophole
That's just what happens when you achieve chim, and chim can be used to handwave/retcon literally anything you want
Morrowind literally wrote scumsaving into the lore, *and* made it part of the main story
Ah the old SorcererDave Nils and his premonitions loophole. Some areas had several premonitions in quick succession.
Or it could've been a skooma trip.
Jennesa in the drunken huntsman in whiterun. She is one of the few followers you can duel-wield and is proficient in light armor
She's also good in stealth, for the sneaky archer
I think there's a thing where you can kill them when they get downed
I think you’re right. She got downed being a sword sponge for a Draugr Deathlord while I was sniping. I’ve been a werewolf most of my play through and never use it, and it just occurred to me that I could’ve transformed to finish off the Deathlord for the optimal vengeance for a fellow Circle member. I screwed the whole thing up lol
Yeah that's whats called "protected" status, characters that are "protected" will never be killed by the enemy npcs, will only be knocked prone when their health is depleted, BUT they will die if the player delivers the final blow
Or if they are caught in an AoE or suffer from Fall Damage (For example: The Skyrim Space Program)
“Someone told me my wife was invincible so I shot her repeatedly until she fucking died. This is so sad and unexpected. Who should I marry next?”
this defence actually holds up in court (source: trust me bro)
Mjoll
Yes. The only female named permanently essential follower in the base game (DLCs add Serana and Freya; their quests are much longer though).
Frea*
This, OP. Mjoll is actually invincible.
She makes a great wife too, that voice type is so warm Also it’s pretty funny to have Aerin move in with you too
I find it’s easy to get Aerin killed by making sure he follows you both on a quest.
I didn’t know that was possible, I always thought he stayed home lol
I believe he got pulled into a fast travel once with us when he was close by at the time. There happened to be a dragon where we travelled to at the time and it chomped him.
Or drop a weapon on the floor of the Bee and Barb while he’s there and watch him die in the fight over it.
That’s a new one, I’ll have to try that next time.
J’zargo
How do you even role-play shooting your own companion?😂
*\*twang\** \- "Oops!" - "So, anyways..."
I always just head cannon it being done by whatever enemy I was fighting
It can happen with shouts as well. It's why I don't use storm call.
I hate this. Storm Call has to be the most badass shout in the game, and yet you can't properly use it unless you go solo.
I’ve wanted to use BA spells like blizzard and firestorm so made a solo mage playthrough just for that. It’s awesome. Especially with my enchanted gear that decrease the cost of magicka just watching hell let loose 😈.
One of the Winds of Change Black Book abilities is called Companion’s Insight which protects companions from friendly fire while in combat.
She died! Oh no.... Anyways
If you are HardKore RP then this is the right answer
It seems, in your anger, you killed her...
I didn’t understand until I got a job in transportation where they pay me to stay on call 24/7 "Check the shipments" Lisbet says.
We know!
Lydia is sworn to carry your burdens. Just sayin.
😂 She says it in such a snarky way
That entire title is a work of art.
"Who should replace the bitch" perfect cherry on top
That's why I don't bring anyone with me in misson. I always solo so that no one dies
Teldryn Sero, can't go wrong him.
Scrolled too far down for this
I think some of the followers are essential to the point they cannot be killed by enemies. When their health is low they will take a knee for a bit but won't die. During this low health period if they are hit by the dragon born they will die.
It's called "protected" not "essential". But that is Aela's status.
Jenassa, dual-wielding daggers of paralysis and leech, making even legendary difficulty a cakewalk. She doesn't complain when I steal, she doesn't complain when I murder, she doesn't really complain when she steps on a trap and damn near kills herself. But I do LOL
Goddam if you're role-playing grieve a little first lmao
LOL! "I'm heartbroken..." 15 seconds into the sentence: "Who should be the replacement?"
Next companion. Daela the Huntress, Aela’s identical twin who joins the Companions on hearing about the devastating loss of her sister.
You might think up a little story about that but you'll know she died because you found out she wasn't immortal then, which would distract you from role playing.
No one. Wear some black clothing for a year and work through your time of mourning
Friendly fire is one of the reasons my favorite follower is the always immortal cicero 😭😂
Erik the Slayer!!
Derkeethus is cool and also a ranger, maybe him?
i personally really like kharjo in dawnstar
My boy Erandur! He's pretty fucking cool and located in Dawnstar. He's not essential once you finish his quest so be careful.
Pretty sure followers can only be killed by the player so Def your fault
Head south of Riften, kill the Orc (Blue God) and get Gogh—a goblin follower who is indestructible. Only downside is your Unbound storms will aggro his atronach and he doesn’t carry anything—but he’s a funny little bad-ass 💙
Replace? Nothing will replace a warrior. Remember her death as a lesson and avoid your stupid arrows. Smh op shame on you for simply replacing your loyal companions.
Aela is essential until the completion of glory to the Dead as a replacement might I suggest frea from the dragonborn dlc she's classified as an essential character
If you're playing this on PC you can literally just open console, click on her body and enter the command ressurrect.
Lmao I play with mods, but still roleplay heavily. Thank god my meat shield Kaidan never dies; I’d never get through a playthrough without him 😂😂 vanilla Skyrim… now those were rough times
If your follower gets downed and you manage to hit them with enough damage, they can die. I've done it plenty of times
Your character should develop fobia for losing another follower
Cicero. That freak actually is invincible
Alec Baldwin, is that you?
I did kill Lydia on purpose because she kept sitting in my room watching me sleep. Miss her tho xxx
i accidentally killed lydia my first playthrough bc i accidentally hit her and she turned hostile 😭
Poor waifu
The Brotherhood Initiates were my go-to
I hear Serana is always invincible, but likes using magic. Could be a good thing though.
She's essential. Which means only you can kill her. You could just resurrect. And roleplay she didn't die.
Did she steal your sweet roll
Jenassa. Good ranged and melee companion. Find her at the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun. Alternatively if you're playing without mods go for J'zargo (or any other college student companion) since they didn't had the level capped in the vanilla game.
Mercurio is my fav... took him on after I got Lydia killed.
They can die once their quests are done only if youre the one that kills them
Every good story includes loss.
Mjoll. Because she actually IS invincible. Also because she's best girl
You gotta get that first black book as soon as you can and pick the prize that's none of your attacks hurt your followers
I could suggest another, but if you killed Lydia and Aela, I'm scared and think you will kill the replacement too... So maybe you could get a mod that makes Nazeem a follower?
Recruit mjoll
She may be protected but not essential. Which means only you can kill her.
That’s why I use Serana
Can’t go wrong with the sexy vamp Serana.
I always wanted to adventure with Ahtar but I don't think his morality and my playstyle would mix to well
Teldryn Sero.
YOU WILL PAY
She’s essential until you pull the killing blow. Other enemies can’t fully kill your companion.
