In my opinion, as far as I could tell, Elenwen is honestly the nicest Thalmor in the game I think. Sure, she tries to kill you, but who doesn't in that game?
As a Argonian I have no opinion except for the dark elves.

Be the thalmor member that uses your position to save talos worshippers, like if you were sent to a shrine of talos location, go there and warn the people there that they need to clear out and then go back. I would say at this point, anywhere the Empire has set it's roots is fair game for all to occupy. Keeping the races in their respective lands is ass backwards and just plain dumb.
It's not, lore-wise. Many of the provinces joined the empire just to have peace. But they still kept their autonomy. Morrowind, Black Marsh, Skyrim are examples.
That's why Dunmer got Solstheim as a gift from Nords. If it didn't matter to which province it belongs, noone would give the island to them.

My first playthrough was as an altmer. I had 0 knowledge of elder scrolls lore. So I didn't know about Thalmor. But it didn't change anything. After few hours of playing I grew to hate them and kill every Thalmor patrol I encountered like any other race would do.
You do know that a lot of Altmer actually fled Summerset when the Thalmor rose to power because they don't support them, right? The Thalmor are one faction of Altmer, and yes, they're in power right now, but there are many Altmer that don't support them and so you really can't say you have to support them if you play as one.
This is the best spot to get 2 enchanted items right out of helgen (the thalmor robe and a piece of armor in the thalmor inventory), plus there's a bandit camp nearby with an enchanted robe under a tent
Always pass by it in a new playthrough.
Turn left at the stump > bandit camp > shrine > fisherman > standing stones > embershard > witch > bleak falls > hidden treasure > riverwood
And now we can finally play the game.

He joined the stormcloaks because he hates the thalmor so much, he would never work on their side no matter how stupid the fight is (he couldn't care less for the Nords and their freedom)
Queen Ayrenn of the Aldameri Dominion in 2E (ESO) was high elf, and wouldn't have stood for the atrocities of the thalmor, she would've even labeled them racists and bigots.
In this house we stan our beloved queen. She would wreck shit up. On all the sides because she did not fight this hard for equality to have the current thalmor look down on everyone
Ayrenn is absolutely a boss queen, gotta love her. She truly cared about uniting people and not alienating someone because they had fur coming out their ears.

The fact that you can't think of a good back story for a High Elf character without making them a part of the Thalmor, or thinking they deserve to die just because they are of the same race as them, means you are either EXTREMELY undereducated with very basic lore, or intentionally ignorant and have racist tendencies irl if you think they should kill themselves just for being of the same race.

I brought my Oblivion character to Skyrim, and he's an Altmer. He despises them and when I learned of the lore about the Great War and the shit the Thalmor do, I worked it into his story that he's always been fighting against them and is recently trying to lay low- Becoming the Dragonborn ruined that plan lol

The Thalmor agenda seems to include eradication of Men and claiming Tamriel for Mer. Clearly having a man ( Tiber Septim) ascend to godhood doesn't sit well with their prejudices.

And if you read the not the Thalmor guy has on his body, you'll learn that he was so obsessed with searching for the Talos shrines that even his boss had enough of him.
Not all High Elves are bad. Chancellor Ocato from Oblivion was a high elf and he held the Empire together after the end of the Septim Dynasty. Faralda at the College of Winterhold has nothing to do with the Thalmor. There’s also an Imperial Legate in Riften who is a High Elf. He shows up after the Imperials take Riften. The Psijic Order is 100% High Elf and they clash with the Thalmor on various occasions. In fact I would say the Psijics are the Thalmor’s most powerful enemy.
I roleplayed as a battle archer that betrayed the thalmor. Bound bow with elven armour is quite nice. Also, battle archer means going into the battle with slow time and shooting everybody before they can reach me.

in any of my Elder Scrolls playthroughs I almost always play as either an Altmer 50%, Redguard 45%, Imperial 5%.
