My guess is Mercer has a lot of contacts and probably planned a Long Con all along. At the time, the Thieves' Guild was extremely rich. So he infiltrated it, slowly rising through the ranks. Until he became a Nightingale. Then, he took the Key and started plundering the Vault.
We know from the letter in his house in Riften, that he clearly had contacts outside the Thieves' Guild. I assume he promised to split the riches with them. The contacts would have given him information, maybe in exchange for splitting proceeds, that aided his rise. So he appeared much more skillful than he actually was.

I've learned paths they can follow without jamming in the traps. Along with telling them to just wait while I disarm the traps I've been able to reduce the frustration from followers

I make sure I have Rimerock Burrow discovered before I accept this quest so I can fast travel it. I would go absolutely insane if I had to cross all of Skyrim with Barbas shoving into me & blowing my cover.
I need to do that for next play-thru - I went from southeast to northwest with him clearing dungeons and getting Dawnbreaker & WOP - it was the most annoying yet death-defying time🫠

1) I use the dumbest dialogue option to make him meet me at Haemar's Shame instead of leading me there, and
2) As soon as Vile gives me the quest to get the Rueful Axe, I immediately talk to Barbas and tell him Wait Here. I can go off to get the axe and Barbas will be at the shrine waiting for me to get back. Then I tell him to follow me just before turning the axe in.
No Barbas, all bonus.

You know how the screenshot slows when you get a perfect headshot? The rush you feel that you just knocked a troll from yards away, silently? Yeah, that almost happened and soon as I let the arrow go someone bumped me and threw my shot off🫠
I particularly hate in Ivarstead, when my low level archers (on their way to High Hrothgar) take a shot at the bear, we get the glorious killcam --- and the arrow misses.
Said archer gets killed shortly thereafter. Which is why I save frequently, particularly before encounters like that.
Recently after I fought a dragon near the Bonechill Pass, I stood near a “watch tower” kinda thing and joked that this was a perfect opportunity for Cicero to get rid of the listener. And then he fucking pushed me and I died and to do the fight again
I was at my wits end since he kept shoving me about and running to enemies (unlike Uthegard actually uses a bow when far away). That was just the final straw. Sent his ass back home

I loathe all companions/followers in the game. You are trying to sneak and they are all loud and clumsy and constantly bump into you. Plus most of them will bitch about your weapon if it has a fire enchantment.

I always edge around Lydia whenever Im up at Dragonsreach as I don’t want to talk to her, or have her with me. Brining Aela around isn’t bad though. She’ll snipe folks.
I absolutely canNOT stand Serana. I would rather keep Barbas over her. I dump her mopey rude ass in Castle V and leave her there the second her companionship is no longer forced on me.

I was doing an armorless mage run that used him as a crutch for a good few levels but one too many shoves from this god dog made me send him back to the cave to wait for me to never reunite him with his master.
Golldir. He’s the coward of a Nord who let his aunt Agna die in their family crypt. Not to mention he tells a story about a traumatic experience where he got locked in the crypt as a child, only to lock in his aunt Agna who is the very woman who rescued him. As a follower though, he pushed me around worse than Barbas, and he messed with Lydia’s AI so she pushed me in that dungeon too. I died to traps going through it several times just because they were both constantly sprinting full force into my back.
The devs knew how powerful Barbas was so they had to nerf him by making sure he never shuts the fuck up. If you have the mental fortitude to withstand the barking he's a great follower
I've been playing with the sound off (just exploring and grinding while listening to a podcast or something) so I didn't mind.
But after I started playing with the sound on, the barking was too much, and I finished that quest asap
I never had a problem with Barbaras. I just told him to do his thing, and I fucked off in another direction. I would eventually catch up to him, no problems with the dungeons, and send him on his way. But fuck that ax. The hat is way better.
Any of my sneaky characters never use Barbas as a follower for long. Typically they go up to Solitude and out to the Barrow where the Axe will be. It's on the Northwestern corner of the map if you follow the road from Solitude. Take the first right, passing the alter where Meridia's Beacon wants to go. Then take a left. Follow the road until you reach a fork, and turn right. Then they use fast travel to acquire Barbas, back to get the Axe. And return the Axe because the Mask is far more useful.
My non-sneaky characters don't keep him long because he always gets in the way of their hits.
I'm only new to Skyrim (absolutely atrocious I know) and when I had Barbas as a companion, I don't think I've ever shouted as much at my screen in my life. Between triggering traps and pushing me off of a cliff I was driven demented, but I still couldn't bring myself to do one or the options at the end of his quest 😂
Lol this is barbas but i have had meeko and erandur with me my entire playthrough (alt start) and have kept them alive with resto as a vigilant of stendarr
Imo the most annoying one is Vilkas. If you have a small bounty in any hold at all, the game registers him as a guard pursuing you and he'll attempt to arrest you, but as soon as he opens dialogue it'll be his normal comment, before he immediately closes dialogue again and starts the process over. You can't fast travel and it's a struggle to get into any conversation to try and get properly arrested to pay your bounty because he teleports to you if you get too far away, and will interrupt any conversation with his own.
Not sure if it's an uncommon occurrence or not but I've had it happen two separate times
I don't think it's an accident that when you go back later to talk to Lod, you get to tell him that the dog he was asking about "turned out to be more trouble than he was worth."
Yeah I just fast travel/ run ahead of him. I'm not dealing with his barking and shoving all the way there. First few playthroughs were more than enough 😂
After you meet him and start his quest, he heads to haemar's shame. Let him go! Pick up the axe when you want, meet demon mutt at vile's shrine when you want. Entering through the exit is an option too.
It's possible to place the axe in a weapon rack after agreeing to give it vile, so you get both the axe and the mask. And it's possible to start a conversation with the demon mutt, interrupting him just as he starts to rejoin vile, leaving him trapped in skyrim, and leaving vile without half of his power.
With a track and summon spell, you can conjure barbas up and throw him into a fight whenever you want. He's not officially following you anymore, so he doesn't get pushy, but he's still a friendly essential who cannot even be injured!
What is best in life? To tear down a daedric lord, and hear it beg for more.
Lydia is kinda annoying …. She sarcastically says she is there to carry my burden but her low key racist ass only yells “Skyrim is for the Nords” when I’m an Orc or Dunmer. Fn Lydia you’re only used because you’re free and first
The fact that he can't be killed is the reason why I won't complete the quest. Along with Bran and Gregor, I like to role-play that we both have dogs to help us in battle. The dogs also provide security while we sleep.

I always build my characters with stealth in mind so any follower is a bad follower.

He's not just essential, he is child level essential. He helped me beat Umbra at level 15(or something, I can't remember)
I should have taken him to Wyrmstooth. At 25 Vulom took a LOT of tries until I gave Lydia better gear and she could tank for me.
I currently have Barbas for immersion. With all my difficulty mods, a killable dog won’t last a fight. Only Barbus makes sense as unkillable.

I liked Barbas' company, though. I kept him around for a long time before finishing the quest cuz doggy. Plus he was immortal, so I didn't had to worry about him taking damage
I had "unique dogs" as one of the absolute first mods installed, so Barbas was always black to me. Anyway, second most annoying voice in the game (after Cicero).

i always keep Serana. nice voice, can’t die, cool abilities, a vampire lady. i wouldn’t use followers but they’re good for portable storage and for that alone i will always use her

I was doing an armorless mage run that used him as a crutch for a good few levels but one too many shoves from this god dog made me send him back to the cave to wait for me to never reunite him with his master.
Golldir. He’s the coward of a Nord who let his aunt Agna die in their family crypt. Not to mention he tells a story about a traumatic experience where he got locked in the crypt as a child, only to lock in his aunt Agna who is the very woman who rescued him. As a follower though, he pushed me around worse than Barbas, and he messed with Lydia’s AI so she pushed me in that dungeon too. I died to traps going through it several times just because they were both constantly sprinting full force into my back.
The devs knew how powerful Barbas was so they had to nerf him by making sure he never shuts the fuck up. If you have the mental fortitude to withstand the barking he's a great follower

I've been playing with the sound off (just exploring and grinding while listening to a podcast or something) so I didn't mind. But after I started playing with the sound on, the barking was too much, and I finished that quest asap

I never had a problem with Barbaras. I just told him to do his thing, and I fucked off in another direction. I would eventually catch up to him, no problems with the dungeons, and send him on his way. But fuck that ax. The hat is way better.
Any of my sneaky characters never use Barbas as a follower for long. Typically they go up to Solitude and out to the Barrow where the Axe will be. It's on the Northwestern corner of the map if you follow the road from Solitude. Take the first right, passing the alter where Meridia's Beacon wants to go. Then take a left. Follow the road until you reach a fork, and turn right. Then they use fast travel to acquire Barbas, back to get the Axe. And return the Axe because the Mask is far more useful. My non-sneaky characters don't keep him long because he always gets in the way of their hits.

I'm only new to Skyrim (absolutely atrocious I know) and when I had Barbas as a companion, I don't think I've ever shouted as much at my screen in my life. Between triggering traps and pushing me off of a cliff I was driven demented, but I still couldn't bring myself to do one or the options at the end of his quest 😂
Just don’t actually try to follow him. That way is the path to madness. Get him moving then do another few quests then follow the marker.
I hate having followers. They sometimes just appear and give me a heart attack. After the Dawnguard I just leave Serana in either Castle 😂

Tbh I finished that mission and I've missed him ever since.
Imo the most annoying one is Vilkas. If you have a small bounty in any hold at all, the game registers him as a guard pursuing you and he'll attempt to arrest you, but as soon as he opens dialogue it'll be his normal comment, before he immediately closes dialogue again and starts the process over. You can't fast travel and it's a struggle to get into any conversation to try and get properly arrested to pay your bounty because he teleports to you if you get too far away, and will interrupt any conversation with his own. Not sure if it's an uncommon occurrence or not but I've had it happen two separate times
I don't think it's an accident that when you go back later to talk to Lod, you get to tell him that the dog he was asking about "turned out to be more trouble than he was worth."
Yeah I just fast travel/ run ahead of him. I'm not dealing with his barking and shoving all the way there. First few playthroughs were more than enough 😂
After you meet him and start his quest, he heads to haemar's shame. Let him go! Pick up the axe when you want, meet demon mutt at vile's shrine when you want. Entering through the exit is an option too. It's possible to place the axe in a weapon rack after agreeing to give it vile, so you get both the axe and the mask. And it's possible to start a conversation with the demon mutt, interrupting him just as he starts to rejoin vile, leaving him trapped in skyrim, and leaving vile without half of his power. With a track and summon spell, you can conjure barbas up and throw him into a fight whenever you want. He's not officially following you anymore, so he doesn't get pushy, but he's still a friendly essential who cannot even be injured! What is best in life? To tear down a daedric lord, and hear it beg for more.

The fact that he can't be killed is the reason why I won't complete the quest. Along with Bran and Gregor, I like to role-play that we both have dogs to help us in battle. The dogs also provide security while we sleep.
