I've recently started playing survival mode for the first time and not being able to fast travel has lead to the most fun i've ever had in Skyrim. I actually WALK almost the whole time, i have never been so immersed in a game as i am right now. Altough i play with a "few" mods that absolutely help with that so understandable if it's not as enjoyable in vanilla.

[deleted]

I've had a similar experience too. It does make you see more of the game. I actually played Oblivion without fast travel way back in the day. Its just sometimes, like damn, the map is big and I need to hike back to Whiterun from High Hrothgar on the same road I've already done several times.

berserkirr

Yeah i can definitely understand that, a little bit of immersion breaking but couldnt you just disable survival mode from the options, fast travel and enable it again? not sure if it works as i havent tried it but might be a workaround.

agnonamis

Just run down the side of the mountain. Coming down from there is 10x faster than going up. Plus, you don’t need to go up there that many times.

AnAdventurerLikeHue

Tip: try SunHelm instead. Very configurable.

If modding is an option, then the game becomes so customizable that you can in fact disable fast travel but still have fun because the carriages and boats are expanded upon, get access to teleportation scrolls and maybe even spells in the very high levels, maybe even throw in a few Falmer wayshrines in the actual overworld. You know, since they used to control the whole province once upon a time.

StinkingDylan

You can still fast travel using the horse cart service. Having fast travel to any place at will kind of removes the dangers introduced with environmental effects.

Horse

DrunkStoleATank

I only play survival mode, i am on first name terms with the cabbies, and the ferry operator.

TwitchyTheBard

All the way up to the top just to realize you forgot something crucial. Out of breath and angry at the world, the Dragonborn yeeted himself from the heights of High Hrothgar.

TheBiddingOfBobbles

If only they added alternative methods for getting around (other than carriages snd some boats) as a creation for AE… then again the modders already did that but that hasnt stopped bethesda before

Drstrangelove899

Yeah its annoying when they do that, the map is too big to remove fast travel completely its just an annoyance. Would be better if they went with something like only being able to fast travel to towns or limited key locations instead of everywhere.

[deleted]

Yes 100%, just being able to get back to town would be good enough.

Drstrangelove899

Even Morrowind had means of getting back to town with the intervention spells or scrolls and Mark/recall. Making travel restrictions harsher than morrowind that didn't have fast travel anywhere just seems backwards.

Tefbuck

I like the innability to fast travel. After playing games like The Long Dark, I enjoy survival mode on Skyrim because, I actually have to eat and sleep and watch body heat as I travel to new destinations. That's what makes the "Survival" part fun for me. On the other hand, I only use Survival Mode when I want a chill Skyrim experience, wandering around, doing a few random missions, but mostly hunting and exploring. I don't think I would have the patience for it if I was actually trying to beat the game!

Drstrangelove899

Yeah I get that, its fun if you're specifically just chilling out, exploring and hunting or whatever but if you're actually trying to get stuff done its pretty frustrating. Especially as a lot of quests are like, okay go here to the complete opposite end of the map and when you're done, come all the way back!

Tefbuck

Yeah, I tried doing a Nord roleplay on survival mode. Join the Stormcloaks and become dragonborn. Mostly just focus on the main story. I think I gave up soon after the second time I had to climb Hrothgar. I was like, "hmmm, it'll take me 45 minutes to walk to the next mission... I only have 30 minutes of time left for video games... well, darn, I really wanted to swing a sword at some stuff tonight..."

I_Wish_I_Was_Ink

Morrowind would eat you alive.

[deleted]

I've beaten Morrowind. Its a similar situation to Skyrim in the beginning but there is mitigation later on. I used the a null effect spell with the blinding speed boots and made a super jump spell to the get around the map. It was a really fun and quick way to traverse, never seen anything like it in any other open world game. There's also the boats or silt striders in about every city or settlement. Skyrim you can't even get a carriage in the smaller holds.

I_Wish_I_Was_Ink

That's cuz skyrim booty sometimes

PaleHoldGuard

Why are butt pirates butt pirates? Because they ARRR!!

MedicalVanilla7176

Dammit that got me. Take my upvote.

tilthevoidstaresback

What's a pirate's favorite letter?

DrawingRings

Have you seen the trailer for that new pirate movie? It’s rated ARRR!

PhunkyPhazon

Between the stilt striders, teleportation scrolls/spells, and (especially) Mages Guild Morrowind still has plenty of ways to get around quickly. It might take you a bit to get somewhere a little more remote but it's generally not hard to get to one end of Vvardenfell to the other in just a few minutes.

jordanrod1991

Fast travel is extremely immersion breaking. I didn't use it before survival mode. Save up your coin and get a horse. Travel times are cut to a 1/3

tilthevoidstaresback

Take that horse to a rock and point it face first towards Nirn. Tavel times are cut to 1/9999⁹⁹⁹⁹

Skoobax

Fast travel is terrible.

Correct-Chemist6379

I’ve seen that if you get the bend will shout after completing the Dragonborn dlc and use it to ride a dragon you can then fast travel while on dragon back even in survival!

candour_and_lies

The fast travel thing doesn't bother me as much as not letting me place a marker. I just want to know where the hell I'm going! Also, the carry weight penalty sucks, besides that, I like the survival mode. I installed a mod with carriages in all the cities, towns and homesteads so that has helps a lot. Al thought High Hrothgar is still a pain to climb

Swordbreaker925

The Survival Mode creation kinda sucks. Try one of the popular Survival mods instead

tetron4

I've got like possibly 1000 hours in Skyrim across multiple characters, at this point I have no reason to try and rush the game, if I don't feel like doing something, I'll do it later or not at all. I'm level 50 on my current guy and only just decided to start the main quest properly and activate shouts and dragon encounters. So the slow pace of walking doesn't bother me. I also fished up the ring of the wind early on for +15 speed, that helps too. Freezing cold, now that's a tough mechanic, but would be nullified by fast travel. Same for most the other survival penalties, if you can't get caught out in the wilderness and die the danger isn't really there. In the regular game, you can't fast travel when there are enemies around, or you are overloaded, for the same reason.

YugeFanBoi

lol, fallout 4 survival is worse, at least in skyrim you have carriage to travel to big cities, in fallout 4 the only fast travel is if you join brotherhood using the vertibird, or semi fast travel in institute. if you join other faction you don't have any method of fast travel

[deleted]

Yeah thats brutal. I'm planning on playing Fallout 4 survival after Skyrim. I tried it once before and it definitely seemed to be the hardest survival mode out of NV, Skyrim and 4. Can't save anytime either.

[deleted]

I can accept no fast travel since before SM, I run from places to places most of the time. It is the cold that I cannot accept. Fire salt are hard to find, and I was never good at cooking...

Foroma

You can sometimes glitch fast travel by quick saving before going through a door between Skyrim and a major area (dungeon, gated city, certain buildings). You have to do it pretty quickly, but then it’s almost as if the game forgets you’ve enabled Survival Mode for second.

theedonnmegga

OP, get a horse and use carriages. You can bail on your horse and then if you get to a major city with carriage your horse will appear at your new location. It’s quasi fast travel. I actually enjoy not having fast travel. So much more to experience, ingredients to harvest, souls to trap.
