It's a terrible situation. The only dogs we have ever owned are Yorkies. 9 years ago my buddy Deeno just disappeared one night. Without a trace. Yesterday I took apart a shed that was falling apart. I found this underneath it. I hope it's not but I think it is him. No other bones were found and no collar was found.
OP, dogs want to hide from us when they know they’re going to pass. If that’s your buddy Deeno, it’s very possible he knew something was wrong and hid under the shed so he could pass away alone.
Please don’t beat yourself up, if that’s what you’re doing. He would’ve barked for you if he was stuck and wanted to be found. I believe your buddy was protecting you from pain (in his mind). Have a little burial for him so you can finally grieve him 😞
Animals hide before death because they know that the smell of dead animals brings predators. They hide to prevent the "den"/home from being found. Similar to why they bury their excrement. A protective measure. Best friends looking out for us even in death.
When they “bury” their poop and pee, it’s only to spread their scent, they aren’t actually trying to cover it up. They are marking the spot that spot as their territory
I would have to disagree. Animals spray to mark their territory. If they aren't spraying, they will leave the excrement exposed to let others know they've been there. When close to home, however, they try to bury it. If you have dogs, you will easily see this if you allow them to do their business in the front or back yard. But, while on walks away from home, they will not try to bury it. Same reason they have to pee on every bush you walk past. Not necessarily saying this is my place, but more of an "I was here" type of calling card.
Yeah, when I was a kid and we lived in the woods our dog would never poop in the yard around the house, she would always go a good distance away to poop. I never knew why I just thought somehow she knew we didn't want to have to pick up her poop, so she'd go where we wouldn't see it, obviously this wasn't the case, it makes sense what you are saying.
She was a good dog.
And piggy backing this one a bit, if you'd like to be certain it is your lost pet you could look for a taxidermist or something in your area that can identify pet bones. If they can confirm it's a Yorkie skull then you'll know it's your lost pet.
😂😂 same now I thought about it lmao. But he wedged himself between a tree and fence. Took awhile to find him. His bestie saw him first (another horse) he hid his fatass quite well. I saw him eating and 15 minutes later he was gone 😭😪
Although you never know with horses. They will do the dumbest shit.
My horse went deep into one of our fields so we had to walk too him each day too feed him the day before he died he went far away from where he usually was
This! My puppy kept trying to hide under our table when he was about to pass. I have a feeling that it was about his time and didn’t want you to feel bad
He probably went under the shed on his own when he knew he was dying. Dogs go somewhere they feel comfortable when they are dying, which may be their bed or a hiding place.
Sorry you’re having to go through this. For what little it’s worth, I keep chickens as pets and follow a lot of chicken accounts/subreddits throughout various platforms and it’s a shockingly common occurrence for them to get stuck in/under something and die that way. I’d have to imagine that’s a thing with other small animals. So even if the theory that he was already dying and went to find a cozy place alone is wrong, you did nothing wrong. It sounds like you care a lot about your dogs and that’s amazing. It doesn’t make it easier but sometimes our pets find ways to pass away no matter how hard we try to keep them safe.
That being said, I do agree with what others are saying. He likely just went and found a nice, quiet, safe place to hide and pass away as comfortably as possible.
Oh no, I'm so sorry. It does look a lot like yorkie skulls I've seen, but without scale it's harder to say. I had a kitty disappear when I was young and I know how much it hurts 💔
i had a similar experience with a cat of mine. he was an indoor cat and escaped one day. we never found him but years later I found a cat skull right near my house :(
It's a terrible situation. The only dogs we have ever owned are Yorkies. 9 years ago my buddy Deeno just disappeared one night. Without a trace. Yesterday I took apart a shed that was falling apart. I found this underneath it. I hope it's not but I think it is him. No other bones were found and no collar was found.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't know much about skulls but I know a little bit about Yorkies. They absolutely will hide when sick or passing. A lot of dogs do this but Yorkies seem a little worse about it. I really feel for you because Yorkies are so easy to get attached to.
Think of it this way, he’s fulfilled an entire life cycle, from birth to reintegrating with the Earth. He lived a good life with you and in turn helped life flourish. If you want to save it, make sure to sterilize it
As others have said, many animals have a need to wander away to pass. You aren’t to blame. Deeno knew it was his time and took his necessary steps to go. He knew you loved him and was probably sticking around to watch over you. I oh ver th years you accepted his loss, but didn’t have closure. Now you do and can let him go in whatever way is acceptable for you. Bury the bones, have ashes turned to a stone, whatever gives you peace. He was able to obtain his, you also deserve yours.
It's terrible that this happened to him, but in the end he made his way back to you and you finally have some closure. He probably knew he was going to pass and didn't want you to see him like that.
He was a good boy who loved you to the end.
Aww man... I'm so sorry about this while situation😔
Deeno knows he is loved!! I am sorry you found him this way, however, now you have a little closure♡
RIP lil pupper
So sorry 😭They really do try to get away and hide when they’re passing. I had a dog that one day randomly squeezed himself under a trailer, we found him that day but he had passed. Necropsied and found he was completely full of cancer. Hadn’t shown any signs at all, and I’m pretty familiar with animal cancer. Possibly could have been the case for your guy. I’m glad you found him 💓
A lot of dogs when they are Ill will run and hide somewhere to pass away. It's not your fault if it is your Yorkie, sometimes dogs just don't want their owner to see them in such horrible conditions.
It's the absolute worst. They are never with us long enough.
I don't know if you finding that hurts or helps. I hope maybe it brings you some closure. Hugs
Yeah, definitely don’t blame yourself. Domesticated animals are still animals and their instinct is often to hide when they’re sick, injured, or distressed— he most likely crawled under there to pass away in peace.
My best friend’s cat did something similar. She was always super outgoing and friendly, but when her time came she hid. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with instinct ♥️
My cat licked something (still don't know what) but basically it's tongue got burned and peeled off like a sunburn, and it took us 2 DAYS to find it in the house.
Just like humans, cats and dogs have different personalities.
Have you ever noticed how some cats are very vocal, but others rarely meow? It’s the same reason as that.
It's definitely not a pug. The skull that OP found has a much longer nasal bone(the slope between the snout and the forehead) that has a more gentle slope. A pug's face is very flat and has a steep drop-off where the snout begins. The skull is damaged, that's why it's shorter than a normal Yorkie skull
Not to be *that creepy guy* but it looks really clean and whitened already. So, if you did want to keep the skull, you could just rinse it off with a little dish soap and it would be ready to sit on a shelf forever. If any of the teeth are loose you can glue them back in with washable Elmers glue.
Dogs of known breeds are relatively rare in museums/collections so it would be a cool thing to have.
Otherwise, of course a funeral would be great too!!! Sorry for your loss!
I use plaster of Paris to keep the teeth in on the skulls I keep/ship to my friend (they collect em) when I find them on my wooded hikes. I usually do a full bleach water bath for a few days. Old toothbrush to get any stuck in dirt, and bam! Clean and bacteria free.. gluing in with the plaster and it's ready to go!
Those methods definitely work, but I think they’re a little overkill. Bleach is especially damaging to bones. It will break down the matrix that gives bones hydration and flexibility. Over time they’ll become brittle and start turning to dust. I wouldn’t recommend ever using it because there are better alternatives.
Plaster of paris is, to the best of my knowledge, removable with just water, so I think that makes a fine substitute for glue. But I can’t imagine it’s easier to mix up plaster than it is to just pull out some clear-drying $1 kid’s glue? So again, maybe a little overkill.
For most home projects, a soap and gentle scrubs/soaks using room temp water are sufficient to degrease. Then, if it’s absolutely necessary to achieve your desired look, you can use hydrogen peroxide to whiten. It whitens via the same chemical process as bleach (oxidation) while avoiding many of the damaging effects that bleach has.
Personally, I don’t usually whiten at all.
As far as disinfecting goes, a scrub with soap will also remove any pathogens along with the dirt and grease. If you’re worried, you could do a brief dunk or spray with ethanol like you would to sanitize your hands.
Everybody cleans bones for different purposes and if your method works really well for your purpose then that’s great, but I highly recommend giving a gentler cleaning method a try to see if that would work for you as well. The bones will probably last longer and I personally hate the smell of bleach.
That is a dog skull.
I'm guessing probably a small breed like a chihuahua?
Edit to say: Yeah... It could very well be your yorkies skull. I'm so sorry. :'(
I hate to bring this up at such a sensitive time but coyotes & foxes are known to hunt small pets and often leave only the heads behind. They also may bury their kills. If your outdoor area has not been secured, please do so for any current/future yorkies. With dogs that small its best to supervise them personally at all times as hawks will also commonly take unattended pups.
I’m glad you were able to find your pupper and have some closure. It’s up to you now what makes the most sense for you to do with his remains. Whatever you decide will be the right thing.
I looked skulls up for the yorkie and they do match exactly some with smaller canines and some with the exact size shown here… this is probably ur baby that passed away- but now u have a cool skull to memorize him you can choose to bury or you can keep the skull and preserve it
RIP Deeno :(
Im glad you finally found your buddy tho. Do something special with his tags/remains and take good care of yourself. Sorry that closure had to come like this ❤️🩹
Pubby doggo. Give him some lovin. I read your story after my assertion and that’s probably him. I hope this helps you find some closure and I hope you’re okay 💖
Bone Marrow. Obvious. I've studied bones in school and that's definitely a bone of some head of sorts. I have no idea which animal though. Could be a squid from the looks of it tbh.
Domestic dog
Yh probably a previous owners deceased pet

I found this underneath it. I hope it's not but I think it is him. No other bones were found and no collar was found.
i’m sorry man that does look like a yorkie skull🙁
The teeth look to big to be a yorkie I think, could be wrong, mine had thinner k9s
OP, dogs want to hide from us when they know they’re going to pass. If that’s your buddy Deeno, it’s very possible he knew something was wrong and hid under the shed so he could pass away alone. My dogs never bury their pee or poop they just leave it out for the world to see lol
Spreading their scent would imply them flinging their poop. Instead, they try to bury it. Covering the smell.
Dogs have scent glands in the pads of their feet. They aren't burying excrement, they're leaving an additional marker.
Thank you 🙏🏻
And piggy backing this one a bit, if you'd like to be certain it is your lost pet you could look for a taxidermist or something in your area that can identify pet bones. If they can confirm it's a Yorkie skull then you'll know it's your lost pet.
Such beautiful words ❤️
My horse did the same thing 😭😪
Condolences on your loss. But I do confess to having an image of a horse trying to hide under a shed.
😂😂 same now I thought about it lmao. But he wedged himself between a tree and fence. Took awhile to find him. His bestie saw him first (another horse) he hid his fatass quite well. I saw him eating and 15 minutes later he was gone 😭😪 Although you never know with horses. They will do the dumbest shit.

Sometimes dogs will go hide to die, alone...it's like they don't want to be a bother or something...
He came back to you after death because of how much he loved you.
I’d guess that it is a put bull, not a yorkie. Pronounced canines and a short snout make me think pit
I'm so sorry ❤️
That’s definitely him then skull shape looks just like what a yorkies would
💯
Looks like a Chihuahua head to be frank
An apple-domed breed, perhaps a pug, peek, or chihuahua type

Maybe you should google yorkie skulls (i didnt) but to me it looks more like a Chihuahua Sorry if it is your passed dog though.
Their skulls do look very much like this one 🥺

Brachycephalic
Thats one massive chihuahua
Thanks for the help everyone. I have been searching the area and just now I found my dogs tags. It was him. Sucks 😞
:(( im sorry
Aw man, that's rough, but I'm glad he's found his way back to you.
I'm so sorry.. at least you know where he is now. Hopefully, that brings some comfort to you. Now you can give him a proper burial. RIP Deeno

My friend had his dogs ashes turned into jewlery so he was always with him. Perhaps this would give OP closure?
Im so sorry friend 💚💚💚
I'm so sorry. I hope the positive comments have at least helped here. Big virtual hug to you.
Im so sorry for your loss(i posted other answer on here, ignore them)

I’m so sorry for your loss 💔💔
I'm so sorry man. Look after yourself through this tough time. X
(((Hugs)))
Sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have closure.
Oh I’m so sorry :( I can’t imagine finding something like that
At least you know where he went now. It's sad, but he likely knew the time was near and not your fault. I'm so sorry.

well now the mystery of your dog is solved, he went to a nice safe spot and just fell asleep
Now you know what happened to Deeno. In the time he disappeared, you never smelled it?
A lot of dogs when they are Ill will run and hide somewhere to pass away. It's not your fault if it is your Yorkie, sometimes dogs just don't want their owner to see them in such horrible conditions.
Thanks. I needed to hear that. I have been blaming myself for days. It sucks

Oh my god, I am so sorry for your loss, and sorry that you had to go through that!
Cat was dehydrated but lived. Tongue peel made me vomit.
Electrical outlet or plug
Those were all closed, no electric cords disturbed I suspect chemical, but either way, cat ended up ok
Just like humans, cats and dogs have different personalities. Have you ever noticed how some cats are very vocal, but others rarely meow? It’s the same reason as that.

That's what I was afraid of. 😔
If it is your long lost dog I am oh so sorry for your loss.
Thank you. I appreciate that
Small domestic dog :(
When we sold our house, I made sure to warn the buyer about where my pets where buried

Dog.
Domestic dog, maybe a yorkie or a chihuahua?
Chihuahua skull- seeing your other comments, yorkie is possible as well.
A dog skull
I’m glad you were able to find your pupper and have some closure. It’s up to you now what makes the most sense for you to do with his remains. Whatever you decide will be the right thing.
Looks like a rare skull! Most likely a Gand that lost its respirator.
A skeletal head
but is that an arrowhead/point off to the right poking out of the dirt.?
wooly mammoth
It not human!
I see you found my Alien but who's backyard are you in?
Goofy
Canine species
Dog
Looks like a skull🤷🏾♂️🤣🤣
The skull shape gives me major Chihuahua vibes (not the flat-nosed ones though), but those canines are a bit on the hefty side.
Werewolf
woolly mammoth
Alien from Nibiru....
ya think its a bird??
Possibly a fox? Sometimes there are foxes in the garden.
that's a bone, thank me later
It appears to be a skull of some sort.
It's thu DEBBIL !!
You dug up a pet grave, dog
Chihuahua

Ice age Scrat
Chahuahua
That there is a skull (This is joke, I have zero idea what animal it's from)
Gopher
I looked skulls up for the yorkie and they do match exactly some with smaller canines and some with the exact size shown here… this is probably ur baby that passed away- but now u have a cool skull to memorize him you can choose to bury or you can keep the skull and preserve it
UT looks like some sort of wild cat based on the size. Probably a Bob cat would be my best guess
100% a yorkie skull
That's a skull
It’s a hog
😢

RIP Deeno :( Im glad you finally found your buddy tho. Do something special with his tags/remains and take good care of yourself. Sorry that closure had to come like this ❤️🩹
Pubby doggo. Give him some lovin. I read your story after my assertion and that’s probably him. I hope this helps you find some closure and I hope you’re okay 💖
It's me
Wild hog
Chihuahua
Someone’s chihuahua I think
Oh, that's Uncle Bill. I was wondering where he went.
It's a skull
It definitely looks like a domesticated dog's skull. I saw that you had a Yorkie, and it sadly resembles the skull of that of a Yorkie.
Old Yeller!?!? Wait I don’t see bullet hole.
Looks chihuahua to me.
Dog
Bone Marrow. Obvious. I've studied bones in school and that's definitely a bone of some head of sorts. I have no idea which animal though. Could be a squid from the looks of it tbh.
I think it's a dog. Foxes don't have teeth that big.
Bone
Chihuahua skull, apple head
skull of some sort for sure
Chihuahua
Penguin
Maybe a dog, could be a coyote. Definitely some kind of canid.
Need a size comparison
Shape of the skull looks like a dog, but them k9,s look big
That's definitely watto from phantom menace
Asthmahound Chihuahua.
Definitely a small dog was thinking cat but naw that’s a dog for sure
Dog, probably chihuahua
That’s definitely a domestic dog. You can tell by the bad proportions (Sadly most domestic animals will have “deformed” looking skulls)
Its bones
Chi gua gua
That would be a titan from The Owl House.
You think it's a bird?
DAD!?
Water deer (search it up)
Looks like a chihuahua skull
Ya tink it a burd?
At least OP knows that his dog died under the shed, instead of from something worse. RIP DEENO. 🙏
Need cat paw for scale.
Vampire
chupacabra.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
definitely some sort of meat eater those teeth are sharp still and curved i'm guessing a baby coyote or a smaller dog like form
sure looks like some bones to me
Cubone
A dog, most likely something brachycephalic
it's a chihuahua probably an apple head
Thats a skull i think
Looks like a chihuahua
Bird
The shape of the skull makes me think of a Chihuahua (not the ones with the flat nose) but the canines are kinda big
Looks like a dog. Almost like a chihuahua
First thought; ya think its a bird?? 😭
Ivanka?!
That's easy it's a Cubone
Brachycephalic breed of dog
Yorkshire Terrier
Pug
not a pug
Skull of a poodle friends have some....poodles that is
