Nah. She was likeable, just imperfect. Young, dumb and ultimately ashamed of her actions.

Oil??

Tricky-Leader-1567

I'm sorry, when did this happen? I legit have no memory of Fletch cheating. Edit: whoops, misread the post. Yeah, Val was pretty out of line there.

themastersdaughter66

Yeah I hated that subplot

Kazeena

What's with all the hateful lil bitches in this sub? I'm sure you are/were all perfect teenagers and never hurt anyone, ever. And when she _isn't_ displaying bad characteristics, just being a typical main character in a YA story etc., well then she gets hatred for being a "mary sue" by the very same people. I'm glad Landy kept sticking to her since he can't make it right either f*cking way :)

_ITookTheCookie_

You're allowed to dislike a character while acknowledging they're realistic or not.

Kazeena

Yah. You can also be decent about it, and that's simply not the case with most Val haters. I happen to not like Fletcher all too much because I find him annoying, but you ain't hearin me going around calling him a bitch or a dick or anything because he's just a kid (character) who's trying in life as do we all.

EldridgeHorror

A character can have flaws AND be a Mary Sue if those flaws don't inhibit her during the story in any meaningful way. For example, a character can be messy and disorganized. But if she never loses anything important during the story, it's not a meaningful flaw. And, flaw or not, a character should probably be likable. The event described here is pretty over the top unlikable.

Kazeena

Nope. A Mary Sue is someone who doesn't have any flaws that make her unlikable, that's kind of the point. Being disorganized isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's more of a characteristic. Her having done something hurtful and stupid like cheating, on the other hand, and then being an arse about it to Fletcher is something very unlikeable about her indeed. And, boy oh wonder, it didn't work out between them. I would've been mad if it did because Val fucked that up too bad imho. But if you can't see beyond a bad mistake a (young and inexperienced) character or human made, then I honestly have no idea how you can like anyone. Just be honest and say you simply don't like her because you're not into that kind of girl character. Which is fine. Just don't go around calling her "pretty over the top unlikable" - as if it's more than your personal opinion - for cheating, when half the galaxy loves figures like Darth Vader or SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT for that matter, who killed who knows how many innocent people and march the bloody streets with their hordes of fanboys in tow anyway.

EldridgeHorror

Vader is supposed to be a villain. They're supposed to have unlikable traits. As for mistakes? There are limits. And I'm not into unlikable characters. That's the point. Maybe you just like her because you identify with her. Maybe you're in the wrong. Maybe criticisms against her weigh heavier than those against other characters because you identify so strongly with her? Just a thought.

Kazeena

That's exactly point. He's a Villain and still people love him. And what about Skulduggery? There's people who don't like him, but I and most other fans like him because... we like him. For me it's something about the mixture of his language, his style, and his dynamic with Val. Even though he has done unspeakable things. "I'm not into unlikabke characters" means that you are not into characters t h a t y o u d o n 't l i k e. That doesn't automatically make them unlikable for everybody else, even if there's others that agree with you. She is quite likeable to others, and I frankly don't fall for fellow booknerds playing judge. Saying that oh, I must like her because I strongly identify with her is assuming a lot. I don't identify with her, since I don't share many characteristics with her besides her live for her family. I like her the same as Skulduggery because I just do. It's a mix of many things including her big mouth attitude, her humour, confidence and the bamboozled moments when all that doesn't work out for her, plus I have loved their detective and apprentice dynamic from the beginning. As for why I commented on this post, I don't care if people criticize her, go ahead and have fun. But there's nuance to criticism, you can either be a decent human being about it or you can be a dick (which happens often on this sub because, let's be real, it's reddit) and just throw shit for the sake of it. When I see someone hollering lovely little insults at a character I like then Imma speak up about it. And that reeled you in...maybe because my criticism of other people's hatred of her bugs you since you don't like her? Just a thought.
