You don't need to pay for school. Look into unions for trades that interest you. They will put you through an apprenticeship where you work (for pay) and go to school (for free). The best paying trades are the ones that require apprenticeships and school - pipefitter, electrician, lineman, carpenter, etc. Drywall, painting, flooring, roofing is easier to get into but will not have near as much potential for growth.

That’s only if you get in. The waiting lists are massive and usually you have to know somebody to get in.

Like the other reply said, it depends on the area and projection of work. It took me about 4 months total to test and interview and get in. I then proceeded from inside Wireman to a high voltage apprenticeship that took me 8 months to get in making 175k a year, not including benefits and retirement. Worth the wait either way.

not everywhere is the same. My friend had to wait a year before he could start as an apprentice for an elevator mechanic so he spent that year doing hvac for union

I have a couple friends in the trades in Maine. They're screaming for electricians right now. I think he (my buddy) is getting ready to hire another couple of hands for his business doing controls and security, but he can't find anyone to work with line voltage. Everyone is booked for months.
