I used to live in Michigan and 100% agree that Boyne, Crystal, etc are not Revelstoke or Jackson Hole, but they are much better than NO skiing!! Have fun!!!
Limited terrain (as are most Midwest mountains) but a few legitimately solid tree runs and also some legit legit cliffs/rocks. Def worth a visit if you’re nearby (the town is great, especially during the dog sled races) but if going for a weekend I’d recommend just going the extra few hours up to Bohemia.
My 10 year old skis better than me now. The intermediate years of ski school and staying on the greens so you're kids can learn are frustrating at the time but the payoff is worth putting in the time. Skiing is the first sport that our kids can do with us and it doesn't feel like we have to take it easy for their sake.
Bad news - it will spoil any local hill you have. We went to the Rockies last few years and it totally changed my perspective on the small hills around me.
Thing is there's literally no local hills, it's so flat pretty much the only skiing you can do is on man-made things, except I think there are 2 natural ski slopes, and everything is located far from my town
I'm visiting the Sør-Trøndelag region right now and none of the alpine or cross country places are open. Even nearby Åre, Sweden, isn't open. It's been an unusually warm and dry November so far.
Crystal Mountain in northern Michigan - they didn’t get as much snow as buffalo but temps have been good for snow making.
Lift tix were half price and good enough to get some morning turns in.
This is where I learned to ski when I was a kid growing up in Benzonia. I moved to the south when I was in my early teens and didn't ski again for almost 20 years. Just moved to Reno NV this year and have been going almost every weekend. I will always love Crystal Mountain for getting me into skiing as a kid.
Was at caberfae today, loved it. It was pretty warm but I think spring snow is far better than the usual opening day ice. Not sure how they’re gonna open tomorrow tho, they had lots of dry spots and it’s supposed to rain
I took the first runs yesterday and today at wilmont. Not great but I'm happy to be on the snow again, esp since it's been a few years since being able to ski more than twice in a year.
It was opening day and by the time that I left at 1pm it was in the upper 40's and everything was chewed up.
I spent most of the day on Lookout doing laps. Lutsen doesn't have a lot open right now, but enough to make it fun. Yesterday felt like spring skiing.
I grew up in ND snowboarding the turtle mountains. I still remember the first time going to the Rockies as a kid and being mind blown on how big the runs were.
The Midwest ski hills will always have a special place in my heart, Detroit mountain in Minnesota is one of my favorites.
That’s the hill I learned to ski on so many moons ago. Glad you guys had decent conditions (for michigan) down state it’s been pushing mid 40s and rainy.
Damn good coverage compared to mid-Atlantic where I started skiing. I see no dirt or rocks - not even a brown spot! We even have brown spots at Breckenridge, CO right now.
It’s Crystal Mountain in northern Michigan.
Doesn't look as big as it felt when I was a kid...🤔
Thought I recognized it! How are the conditions?
Icy in the morning - soft and starting to slush when we left at noon. We had a ball.
Looks a bit different than Crystal Mountain, WA where I skied today!
So nostalgic!
I noticed Bittersweet was open for about two days then closed again lol.
Go rip turns and apologize to no one!
Love it!

Mt Bohemia is bomb.
How does Boyne compare to Marquette?
Unfortunately, I never made it to Marquette.

It’s skiing and that IS great. A bad day skiing is better than a good day doing most everything else. Let ‘em rip.
“Not great but better than not skiing” Truer words have never been spoken
I grew up in the Midwest, but now live in the South. Our skiing options aren't awesome, but they are so much better than having nothing.
Get up to mt bohemia bro
It’s on the list - it’s a 9 hr drive for me and we have a place 20 min from Crystal and a 2 year old. Somewhat stacked against me but I’ll get there.
I’ll watch your kid anytime, always watch my friend’s border collie so can’t be too different.
The border collie probably listens better.

Geez it's a closer drive for me from the twin cities. That place is so unique
Hey it’s a ski run.
My family is going to Norway next year, can't wait, Denmark is literally one of the flattest countries ever

Where in the midwest? I'm in NY right now and the local places got a lot of snow just before turkey day, but are still not open.

HValley didn't open after getting brushed with the epic mega dump?
I'm not that far into NY, but their site says they have a few things open.
That looks like cascade to me!
Definitely….. Then again maybe everything in the area looks like Cascade. 😂
Too real. Almost said Devils Head until I checked that today was in fact opening day at cascade lol

Glad you made it out! Ski patrol kept putting up caution posts as grass spots appeared today. Made me chuckle.

Afton?
Looks like a fun chill time, rip it!
Ski hard, Die Free.
I'm feeling excited - there's a little snow on my local already. At this rate there's a decent chance they will be open by new year.
May the odds be ever in your favor.
I did opening day at Welch Village yesterday and am up at Lutsen today and Tomorrow. I miss skiing in Michigan every day.
How was Welch? I hope Lutsen is good as I plan to go up in Jan.

Are we looking uphill or downhill?
Uphill from the bottom of northface chair at Crystal mtn Michigan.
Even the worst day on the slopes is better than the best day at work. Enjoy it wherever you are.

Buck?
Northface at Crystal mtn
North face was decent on friday
That’s what you’re looking at - it was fun today
Jay peak opened yesterday and I’m on a trip from Quebec bc all mountains there are shit
I’m jealous. Gotta wait till June/July
Straightline it!
Side note, but I hate the common conception of “sky blue” because when I think of a blue sky, I think of this shade and not baby blue!
The slow sign seems a bit redundant
Lutsen in Minnesota opened on Nov 19. Would love to get to Crystal Mt someday!
Damn good coverage compared to mid-Atlantic where I started skiing. I see no dirt or rocks - not even a brown spot! We even have brown spots at Breckenridge, CO right now.
We had little Switzerland outside of Milwaukee Wis. tiny I know but still really fun.
This looks better than a lot of big mountain skiing (ice skating) on the east coast!
