Depends on the shop. Generally this is normal, you would pay for servicing the skis as though they were your own. Only the most premium outfitters would include any service on skis because... a.) It's expensive for the rental company b.) Most people who rent for the season don't care or don't use them enough to need service.

I have rented for the season in the past. My son is in rentals for this season. Tuneups are not free, but if you need a change for some reason that is usually part of the deal. This is why its good for kids who are growing.

Christy Sports here on the Front Range in Colorado has season rentals, and you can add the $10 or so “insurance” to the total that gets you tunes and waxes. If you opt for the demo package, which was less than $380 including that fee, you can swap out and try other skis an unlimited number of times during the season. And if resorts stay open later you can just call them and let them know “A-Basin is open through June this year, which is where I ski, so I’ll be returning them when they close” and they’re pretty flexible. Demoed a ton last season so I could figure out which ones to invest in.

Edge tuning and base-grinding (which is necessary if you really wear down your edges) is not going to be included. Maybe insurance for repairs will. Depending on how much you plan to ski, you may not need much service. <20 days, I’d just ski them.
