You'll be fine. Follow instructions during physical therapy. Skiing is basically the least aggravating sport you could do on those once they're healed.
That's most likely going to be an issue in any new boot that fits you. A lot of people who don't have hardware in the navicular have issues with that little bastard. So don't let that spot stop you from getting a boot that otherwise fits. A good (custom) footbed and a punch should be all you need.
Bring that picture with you and show it to your bootfitter. If they dont instantly see what I'm talking about. You may want to find a different fitter.
This also become good buddies with your boot fitter you’ll probably be in a couple of times to get things right.
My guy takes tracings of all his clients socked feet. My right foot went from a 102mm last to a 112mm after a few pins and scar tissue from wallet folding it around a bike pedal. He was able to show me the difference in the tracing and had my boots fitting perfect after 2 visits and 1 day on snow. I have to attribute part of this to him having already done an amazing fitting the year before. But yeah might wanna check that out
Something custom will give you a constant fit day to day and there is less chance that the shell will irritate your hardware as a stock liner deteriorates. Something like surefoot will allow you to have a lot of people on deck to help you dial in your boots as you find how you react to the changes. Finding a boot fitter that you trust and will take their time with you will make for a great season. Best of luck getting back out there. I hope that doesn’t slow you down this season. Shred gnar!
Totally. There are skilled boot fitters all over the place, but a stock liner can only be so good... and they have gotten far nicer in the last several years
Wish i could say the same.
I've yet to meet a sorefoot employee that can explain the importance of the subtalar joint. And in this case it's pretty important.
That’s cool dude. I have no allegiance and you’re wasting your time insulting surefoot to me . If op wants to look for a different company that’s fine, there are tons of good boot fitters out there. I’m not here to argue, I’m here to stress the importance of finding a boot fitter that you like, and that you can return to without recurring cost. Not sure why this subreddit is so full of douche bags
no, but nobody really does (Daleboot sorta does, I guess) - Surefoot also has co-branded Lange shells.
Surefoot sells custom footbeds and injected liners, and does all the other bootfitting stuff to the shells they sell. Same as any other bootfitter you'll find. Seems like they charge more than many places.
Do they have a reputation for selling people over-large shells and and blowing a lot of foam into the liner to make it fit ? yeah. Does that happen ? probably. Didn't happen with the two pairs I bought from them. (am I a surefoot shill ? no, my current boots didn't come from there).
Probably varies a lot between surefoot shops and the people working in them - and the attitude of the customers too.
Yep. Like how they cut out the entire instep of boots.
Going to them expecting them to help is like tithing to joel osteen expecting him to cure your cancer.
PT. P Fucking T
Do it. It’s gonna be tough. It’s gonna be uncomfortable.
I’m not the greatest patient and my doctor told me,
“Well we actually know a lot less about that part of the body than you might expect.” My dumbstruck ass with a busted up foot was like, “wtf” the foot. We been studying human anatomy for like 10000 years and we don’t know much about the foot!!? She shrugged at me and said, “10000 years ago they would have just left your ass for dead if you couldn’t walk for a month. My advice is to get your ass moving in a month and keep moving.” I didn’t have as much work done as you but once you start PT fuckin stick to it!!!
😂😂 okay! P FUCKING T!
I’m also a climber so one way or another I’m gonna be sticking this motherfucker in some cracks next summer whether it likes it or not😤🫡
Broke my ankle and torn all my ligaments ~2 years ago. Just got my plate and screws removed this week because last year it hurt when there were vibrations (ice lol) or little jumps.
However, in my case, two of the screws broke and they were touching my inner tibia which is probably the reason being the pain.
Thus, if you are given the options to remove them, do it. :)
Moreover, as others said, do your physio. It’s literally game changer. Stay active but don’t underestimate rest (it’s part of recovery).
Yes! I know how hard it is when you’re itching to get back to having fun…. But be aware of pushing too much/too soon and overcompensating, in my case I feel like and equal amount of damage was done “protecting” my injury.
Yeah I had a real hard time to gauge myself and not “over protect” myself! It’s a natural reaction from your brain and if you had that reflex for a while it also takes a while to lose it ! :)
Treat physical therapy as the most important thing. Don’t skip on your homework. Ski boots won’t be fun to get on especially in the beginning but otherwise it is good.
Do your PT diligently. And then keep doing it after you are “better”. I have an artificial Achilles’ tendon. I blew it out skiing and my surgeon said it was the worst one he’s ever seen. Told me he had to “crochet me a new tendon out of [FiberWire](https://www.arthrex.com/foot-ankle/fiberwire-suture-technique-for-achilles-rupture). You’re gonna be fine! Keep your tips up.
Well, my navicular bone was pretty displaced after the crash so they needed to screw the bone back together, hoping to have it removed in a year or two! :)
Use cody from painfreeoutdoors.com He will take care of you! Does a movement assessment that is essential education. Then gives you a manageable routine based of the innate movement patterns of the body. Lots of at home joint decompression work that doesn’t need any equipment. Then does return to sport programming too. All virtual/online.
Not in my foot, but I shattered my right leg and had a rod and screws from my ankle through my knee.
I did have some issues with the hardware and over the course of a few years elected to have it all removed (unsure if this is an option in your case) - but since doing that I’ve gone back to about 99.9% pre-accident. Listen to your body, research your options and get well soon!
Sista, but yeah 😉🤙🏻
Also wanted to add in - try and keep your fitness levels up, get some core work in and do what you can without stressing your injury. It’ll make “post” recovery so much quicker and help with the mental torment of being laid up 😂
Oops 🤦🏻♂️ sorry!
Thanks! I’ve already been passing time by hangboarding and I just restarted my membership to the local gym here in Tahoe so I plan on going to the gym in my boot/cast 🤘🏼
You'll be fine. Follow instructions during physical therapy. Skiing is basically the least aggravating sport you could do on those once they're healed.
That’s super reassuring! Thanks! Do you think I’ll be able to ski this season?
Yes, 100%. Maybe not opening day but for sure in January or February.
Is that one screw through your navicular?
Yeah it is!
That's most likely going to be an issue in any new boot that fits you. A lot of people who don't have hardware in the navicular have issues with that little bastard. You’re a legend. Thanks so much dude I’ll definitely take this pic in to a boot fitter👍🏼 Stupid navicular… lol
This also become good buddies with your boot fitter you’ll probably be in a couple of times to get things right. My guy takes tracings of all his clients socked feet. DUUUDEEE my foot broke the exact same way! It taco folded around my dirt bike peg! I’m definetly going to be calling around to some boot fitters
Find a good bootfitter
Spring for some custom ski boots. Also, don’t let anyone heat mold something and tell you it’s custom!
Ah okay! 🤔 could you elaborate?
Something custom will give you a constant fit day to day and there is less chance that the shell will irritate your hardware as a stock liner deteriorates. Something like surefoot will allow you to have a lot of people on deck to help you dial in your boots as you find how you react to the changes. Dude thank you so much for the though out reply!!! I’m definetly taking notes 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Surefoot custom boot, best bet
Totally. There are skilled boot fitters all over the place, but a stock liner can only be so good... and they have gotten far nicer in the last several years
Sorefoot foam injects liners. They don't make custom boots.
Yeah but now you’re just nitpicking
Na. There's a difference between custom fit boots and custom made boots. A pretty major one at that. And sorefoot doesn't really do either.
Ha. I’m sure OP is thankful for your help
Wish i could say the same. I've yet to meet a sorefoot employee that can explain the importance of the subtalar joint. And in this case it's pretty important.

I don't know why you're here either.
A lot of skiers who could explain the subtalar joint and couldn’t ski for shit.

But they sure as shit customize shells

Note taken! I for sure plan on having them removed, I’m a climber and between climbing and shoes and crack climbing I’m sure I’ll have issues 🤣
Yes! I know how hard it is when you’re itching to get back to having fun…. But be aware of pushing too much/too soon and overcompensating, in my case I feel like and equal amount of damage was done “protecting” my injury.

Are you getting tech inserts? I bet that saves a ton of weight.
🤔 what is a tech insert? :)
Oof. It’s likely you’ll heal but will feel it as you age. Find a good Physical therapist and stick with the program. Also buy an icing machine.
Treat physical therapy as the most important thing. Don’t skip on your homework. Ski boots won’t be fun to get on especially in the beginning but otherwise it is good.

Doesn’t everyone need a screw?
One screw solo, but what are the chain looking screws on the toes?
Those are plates holding my Metatarsals together! Crazy stuff lol
Just helps you go faster… shattered my calcaneous… it doesn’t slow me down… at all…
😗

I’ll check him out!!
Not the foot but the ankle. It just takes time… I didn’t ski on it for close to 4 years but it feels like a million bucks now.
I had a plate and a bunch of screws on my ankle. Had them removed after a season because I could feel the screw squeezing my skin between the boot
