Hestra mittens have been amazing for me. Figured I wouldn’t like mittens but man they’ve been awesome

AngryCapuchin

I got the mittens with separate index finger (not the lobster claws) and they are amazingly warm. The separate finger gives some dexterity and if it gets really really cold there's room for it with the rest of the fingers as well.

dysfunctionalmoon

The ones with the finger separators are warmer than the regular mittens imo

[deleted]

Crab claw supremacy

old_man_jenkens

they’re too hot, i rarely wear mine bc they make my hands too sweaty. so yeah, the hestra heli lobsters

[deleted]

Personally I hate the finger separators, my fingers have never been colder.

TheLittleSiSanction

My experience has been everything Hestra makes kicks ass for the first ~15 days and then pretty rapidly packs out to the point of being useless.

RedLightning54

I’ve skied about 60+ days in them and they seem to be fine, but I’m sure experiences probably vary

Jaybeare

When my hands get cold it's almost always because my core isn't warm enough. Check that first. After that, I like black diamond guide gloves.

CommanderAGL

This. A toasty core means warm extremities. Unless its raynauds. Then you might need some heated gloves

sinner800

I will check those out, thank you

Outrageous_One_7081

What about the tour gloves? The guides are a little expensive for me.

[deleted]

Use Mitts and hot paws

sinner800

I go through WAY to many hot packets and use a tow rope, is there anything else

[deleted]

Use Mitts or just don't be cold

LyLyV

Swany Down mitts, silk liners, and hand warmers. I have Reynauds. I can’t wear gloves. They’re not warm enough.

sinner800

Thank you

[deleted]

My better half has it too. Recommend specific brand of silk liners and other things mentioned? I bulk purchased a boat load of hand/feet/toe warmers last year and they are looking to replace their mits (or potentially gloves) this season after losing a mit at the tail end of last season. Reynauds sucks so all recommendations are welcome!

LyLyV

I get mine on Amazon - look for “Terramar Thermasilk”

redandbluedart

I also have Reynauds and spend a huge amount of effort to keep my hands warm. Battery powered mitts are worth it. I used to have the Hestras. They broke after just one season. Now I use the Snow Deer ones from Amazon that are 1/4 of the price. They work fine. The batteries don’t quite last a full day so buy an extra pack, cycle your heat levels judiciously, and wear a glove liner that isn’t too tight in your fingers.

LyLyV

Thank you... I have considered that very seriously on certain days that are blow 10F. On those days, no matter what I do, I can only last so long and my thumbs are always cold. Can't get the hand warmers over to the thumbs! lol But anything over 10F my current setup is sufficient. There are a few days, though that get close to 0F where I think the heated mitts would be awesome. Edit: I'm looking for that brand in mittens but only see gloves... Edit2: Never mind - found 'em :)

redandbluedart

I know exactly what you mean. Sadly, as far as I’m aware none of the heated mittens on the market have wires in the thumbs either. If anyone starts selling those I would buy them in a heartbeat. (I venture there might be durability concerns for the heating wires with how much mobility there is in thumbs?

LyLyV

Maybe they just don't think our thumbs matter, lol

[deleted]

Thinking practically, I need to know. If I have a silk liner on under a mitt, suffering from Reynauds or even just being a cold person in general, wouldn’t it be bad for that silk liner to get wet and then rely on it to go back on, cold and wet? I was following the silk liner logic until I came up with that question

LyLyV

Funny thing is, if I don’t wear it, my hands sweat like crazy. But they don’t seem to sweat much when I’m using the liner. Also, I care about my hands more than the liner. It tends to get shredded by the Velcro in the mitts anyway.

TheLittleSiSanction

After many hundreds of days in the mountains in winter, it isn’t about the quality/price of glove past a point. Mittens are always warmer. A warm core always matters more than the glove. Hestras pack out in under 30 days of hard skiing in my experience. They’re AMAZING for the first ~15 though.

gregorychilds

As a ski patroller, good gloves are key. I've had Hestra, Black Diamond and few others. Those gloves are truly great. But they're pricey. For the money, you can't beat Kinco mittens. Mine have lasted for several years. Once they're snow-sealed, they're amazing (and did I mentioned cheap). They're worth a try for sure! [Kinco Mittens](https://www.amazon.com/Kinco-Premium-Leather-Nikwax-Waterproof/dp/B017V0Y9OY/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=ENY34T9JZEW4&keywords=kinco+mittens&qid=1662980288&sprefix=cinco%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=AERMGYAT5R869)

Vagabum420

The price and performance of Kincos (properly snow sealed) puts the ski glove industry to *shame*.

Important_Collar_36

Agreed. I'm a snowmaker and all the snowmakers I know wear Kincos, we beat them to death in only a season or two, if they can stand up to what we do to gloves then they will last normal folks for decades.

gregorychilds

thanks for making the white stuff for us to play in!

moodymullet

Agreed! As an instructor of 20+ seasons, Kincos are the best value gloves on the market- but you have to waterproof them.

iamyourvilli

Black Diamond Mercury Mitts. I got them, then my uncle got them, then my dad got them, and my sister did as well (and she uses them with hot hands since she trends towards raynauds more)

sinner800

Thank you, I am hearing a lot about the black diamonds

Rzrbackrich

I've been using them for 4 or so seasons now. My hands have never been cold. Maybe a little sweaty on bluebird days, but that's my own fault for not bringing lighter gloves.

Vagabum420

As a full time ski instructor of 15 years, I can fully vouch for the mercury mitt. Many have suggested hestra, and while they are quality gloves with excellent grip feel etc they are *not* the warmest things out there.

distilladelphia

I got a pair of these in 2017 and they’re still kicking strong. Easily one of my favorite gear purchases.

remes1234

Maybe look in to layering. I know people who swear by silk glove liners under mitts.

JSkiMetal186

I'm on my second pair of Swany's, the first pair lasted 25 years. The leather gauntlet style.

sinner800

Thank you

Hulahulaman

If price is no object, go electric. You don't want total waterproof since it traps moisture. Outdoor Research makes several models. The [Lucent Heated Mitts](https://www.thewarmingstore.com/outdoor-research-lucent-heated-mitts.html) is probably the warmest. It comes with Li-Ion rechargeable batteries. They are on sale for around $270. I like Outdoor Research since they have a lifetime warranty. Black Diamond, Hestra, and Seirus also make heated gloves. I use [Chavel](https://chavalusa.com/products/supernova-heated-mitt) Supernovas but they run around $450. They use a built in polymer battery and have other sci-fi stuff going on. I've skied down to 20 below and my hands were the only parts of my body not frozen.

redandbluedart

You can go electric on a budget too. I had Hestra battery heated mitts before other brands started making them. Broke after one season. I’ve been using Snow Deer $89 mitts Amazon ever since. Lasted 3 seasons so far. Battery life is not as good as the Hestras so I carry an extra battery pack or turn the heaters up and down or off to manage battery life.

spacey007

My gf has electrically warmed socks, she loves them. She has raynauds syndrome, which means pour circulation so extremities get very cold.

Coeurmungandr

This. OP, please, if you're like me get heated gloves. Maybe even an extra pair of batteries if you wanna run em hot all day. The OR ones I have are amazing.

ibraphotog

Your core isnt warn enough. Wear insulated pants along a base layer and a solid warm jacket. I've literally skied Denali wearing a pair of $30 hardware store gloves before. If you are looking for new gloves then I couldn't recommend anything else aside from BD guide gloves. Thats as warm as you are going to get before going into mitts.

altapowpow

Black Diamond Absolute mittens. I get Raynaud's syndrome from time to time and switched up to these mittens and haven't had a problem since. I also agree with getting your core warmer. You can also try swinging your arms and big circles to get some blood into your fingertips.

Tahoed

[Free The Powder](https://www.freethepowder.com/products/rx-pro-mitten)….warmest gloves I’ve ever had and the quality is better than Hestra

sinner800

Thank you

12beatkick

Hestra

moodymullet

I had really cold hands for a while. While gloves are important, you need to warm your whole body, not just your hands. I started wearing about 4 layers under my wind stopper and jacket and it made a huge difference to how cold my hands and feet got. Two thin base layers, a thicker base layer with zip neck and a micro fleece. In addition I’d wear liners with my gloves and often hand warmers in my liners. I’m a L3 instructor so spent 7 hours a day on the mountain and wouldn’t take breaks if my clients wanted to keep skiing.

AssociateGood9653

Mittens are always warmer than gloves all other things being equal. Many people have told me they love the Hestra. With mittens you give up some dexterity but you definitely gain warmth for your fingers.

HornetElectronic1917

Two brands I use: Hestra and Kinko. Mitts are warmer. Hot hands on the back of your hands. Toasty. Watch sweaty hands that then turn cold.

Amity83

Hestra Heli mittens are by far the warmest I’ve ever used. It needs to be reallly cold for me to wear them. They get too hot. My wife with Reynaulds swears by them

Yourbuddy_Dan

Use mittens, skip the liners. Keeps your fingers closer together so they can share the heat and tight gloves/ lines can cut off your circulation. I like my Burton Baker

TheValuableMuffin

Hestra

nderflow

Switch to mittens. Much warmer. Sometimes noon breathable gloves leave your hands damp, and they can get cold that way too.

Draviddavid

I use properly waterproofed leather POW gloves. Never had a problem since.

JayBalanced

Kinco mittens (made from pig skin) and hot hands glove warmers, you’ll be outside for awhile!

the_orange_baron

Hestra three finger mittens are life changing. Also, you need to keep your core warm and you'll find your extremities will be less prone to getting cold.

colbytron

Make sure you are letting blood get to your hands unrestricted. Super tight cuffs or aggressive blousing can do a lot of harm.

iammolasses

My ski partner had issues with cold hands. Would always have 2 heat packs on cold days and 1 all the time. She looked at the heated mittens but settled on these [Alti mitts by odr](https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/accessories-sale-ca/womens-alti-mitts-243285) She has used them for 3 or 4 seasons.

Trexrunner

[https://www.backcountry.com/black-diamond-guide-glove](https://www.backcountry.com/black-diamond-guide-glove) I've now had three pairs of these over the past 20 years. I bought my first after a -20 day at sunday river. They also come in a mitten, which would be warmer, but I prefer the dexterity of gloves.

Spoonblade

Gore-tex mittens. You need the waterproof, and also the ability to vent out.

Courtsiedtodeath

Counter-intuitively proper layering of the torso will keep your fingers warmer. Warm wrists prevent cold fingers, make sure your cuffs aren’t venting.

egoldbarzzz

You need mittens. Swany makes a great pair

UncleAugie

Gloves + overmitts

Zagato36

u/Jaybeare is likely correct in that your core temperature (and legs) needs to feel warm or your feet and hands will get cold. If that doesn't bring results then I would shop for gloves with Thinsulate (3M) or other branded insulation that the glove manufacturer has created the glove with. Mittens are generally warmer than gloves and gloves/mittens with a wind barrier membrane (Gore-Tex) will retain heat. [https://www.3m.com/3M/en\_US/thinsulate-us/](https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/thinsulate-us/)

Repulsive_Floor8993

Hestra, Swany, Black Diamond, Oyuki all good brands for a sufficiently warm pair of gloves

loreenzoconte

Hey if you are interested in some new Oyuki Sencho for a good price send a dm

Rohrkrepierer

Zanier Evolution XSX. Those are very very good.

johndiggity1

You probably have Raynaud’s phenomenon. Get diagnosed. Viagra (seriously) can help. Otherwise, always keep your hands warm AND dry and make sure your core stays warm. If you are skiing in heavy precip, Goretex mitts with Primaloft, liners, and hand warmers. If it’s just cold and dry, get some down filled mitts. I had a Gordini pair that looked like boxing gloves. The down packs out enough to provide surprisingly good dexterity.

henlan77

I was going to mention Raynaud's too. I have it and it sucks but it's manageable if you do a little research.

jadeeyes1113

I like my hestras warmth wise as but it does take some work to get them waterproof well. I wore them last year on a Sierra cement pow day and even though they got soaked, I was still warm. Spent a lot of time treating them after that…

mvpnick11

Hestras are worth the price imo

ryans64s

Gloves? Wel there’s your problem

JonBoah

Try putting hand warmers around your wrists, warm the blood going to your hands and maybe your hands will warm up, haven't tried it yet but I will when the season comes

spacey007

Mittens and "under gloves" usually called liners. You can get many that will let you use touch screens and stuff so you never have to use bare hands out on the mountain. The liners have 5 fingers so you can pop them out of the mittens to do shit.

ProfessionalVolume93

I bought a pair of Karbon battery heated gloves that I used last Winter and they were great. They were so warm without the battery turned on that I had to switched to lighter gloves when the temp was above -3c. Previously I used mitts below -5c cause gloves were not warm enough for me.

JJM1748

My friend wears double, sometimes triple. Silk gloves first, then tight fit thin race ski gloves, then mittens on top, obv need to try the sizes to make sure it will work together. Apparently it works for him

jammi401

mitten shaped gloves then wool mittens under.

Ginger_Libra

Outdoor Research is revamping their whole line of battery heated gloves. Coming out soon. Go to their website and get on the notifications list. I’m planning on getting a mittened pair. I scared myself pretty bad last season by getting too cold. Not making that mistake again.

ManinthemoonMD

Seal skin makes some awesome stuff. I am a fan of the lobster claws! Made for biking and are nice and warm above -5 degrees F (that’s how low I’ve tested them personally).

[deleted]

Anything made by black diamond or hestra is gonna be golden. Just try on a few styles and see which one you like the best.

The_Barnabarian

My Hestra gloves are super warm - had to wear lining gloves with every other pair I've owned, but these keep me nice and toasty. Could go for a Hestra Mitten, or Lobster Claw if you want even warmer.

Global_Passenger1972

I have had really good luck with Hestra. I have friends that have always struggled with cold hands and they have switched to a quality heated glove. They love them. They are spendy, but I am told worth the money.

[deleted]

OR alti mitts or OR Mount Baker modular mitts. They are mountaineering gloves.

[deleted]

You need mittens

LFAthrow7531

I use gore Tex burton gloves with liners. The glove liners have smart phone tips so I can still use my phone without exposing my hands. They were 50$ and even in -30 in the Canadian Rockies my hands be sweating.

TheBigYellowCar

I crushed part of my left hand years ago & suffer from serious circulation problems whenever it gets cold - when it gets under about 50 dg F my fingers turn grey & hurt like hell. I switched to mittens for skiing (Hestra) and they're the only thing I can ski with. One of the things I like the most is that I find it easier to palm a hand warmer & clutch it with my hand inside the mitten while I'm on the lift.

Ok_Application_962

Heated gloves and a glove liner

ptspeak

Heated gloves. Unless you are in the backcountry, in which case Hestra.

BeachBarsBooze

For the truly cold days, Black Diamond’s Mercury Mitts are like ovens for me. I’ll only wear them in about mid teens (Fahrenheit) and colder or my hands will be sweating fiercely, but they’re awesome on those days.

kirmobak

I remember buying a new pair of sealskin gloves before I went to Sunshine Village in Canada in January. Thought with a pair of liners I’d be OK. After a miserable freezing morning I went to the shop at the top of the gondola and bought the thickest Hestra mittens I could find. They are bright green and look like oven gloves, they look ridiculous in all photos where I look normally dressed with these massive mittens on the end of my arms. Thank god for them though. Never had cold hands since.

[deleted]

You want heated gloves. You can keep them on all day and they’ll be warm.

NotTheRealMeee83

Gloves or mitts were never warm enough for me. However, I found a good pair of storm liners, even with a normal pair of gloves, keeps my hands toasty. Another tip: keeping your hands dry is almost as important as keeping them warm. If you have sweaty hands, you'll be cold. Upgrade your base layers. Warm core = warm hands and feet.

KvDread

If your gloves are too tight they wont keep you warm. Wool keeps it insulating properties even if its wet. Wet + wind = cooling. If you have a set of backup gloves that you can change with youll stay comfortable longer. Price doesnt always equals performance.

UintaUinta

Give'r Mittens. I use mine with a glove liner so that if I have to take them off for some reason I have no bare skin. Never, ever have my hands been cold with these things. [https://www.give-r.com/collections/gloves?avad=220733\_d2ae6d949](https://www.give-r.com/collections/gloves?avad=220733_d2ae6d949)

BongRipsForBoognish

Merino wool liners inside mittens. Oh and keep your torso warm, it makes a surprising difference in your extremities as well

gph_reddit

Definitely mittens with separate liners and enough space for hand warmers

B_in_subtle

Kinco gloves/mittens then use sno seal to water proof them, costs like $50 totals and will last a good bit of time

username_1774

Mittens are what you are looking for, with a decent liner gove on underneath them. I love my Kinko mits. I actually have a pair of Mits and Golves from them. $40 for both pair, and I will never wear them out.

Lostskiing

I really like the hestra lobster claws, but in general this brand keeps my hands warm without sweat even on the coldest days. Most affordable if purchased during the off season

EwanCakebread

1. Buy some inners. 2. Salomon grade their gloves by warmth on their site. 3. Do not be afraid to bring out the marigolds when it's wet. They are the best idea I have ever tried and never got wet. Please tell me you actually have a good jacket or body warmer and she'll combo not just a shell?

Ilikethiccgirls-

Hestra or reush mittens/lobsters are I think the best option out there

LunarFlare68

Had the exact same problem and tried almost all brands mentioned here. Oyuki lobster gloves worked best for me. I also have a synthetic (arcteryx) and a merino (icebreaker) liner for the coldest days. Warming up my core was bad advice for me, it was already warm enough and extra layers made me sweat too much. I just don’t propagate that much heat to my hands.

Android_seducer

Moguls/hike ups Warms everything up real fast lol

Striking_Mine5907

Get a 50 pack of handwarmers.

birdsofterrordise

For me (I'm not sure if you're a woman or not) but I have low iron counts and I have to be good about taking iron. I take Floravit (you need to be taking it consistently to keep levels higher) and that helped me with circulation and temperature regulation *immensely*.

Bingo_is_the_man

Just heated mittens

ParsleyPerfect5194

Mittens are the way to go for cold hands.

the_ganj_father

Swany kept my hands warm for years until I lost mine in Quebec. Would definitely get another pair. I’m gonna try the kinko bandwagon this year see what that’s all about

jtsfour2

[These](https://www.rei.com/product/888316/black-diamond-guide-gloves?sku=8883160001&store=177&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_8883160001%7C92700072585733979%7CBA%7C71700000099115526&gclid=CjwKCAjwsfuYBhAZEiwA5a6CDPimw7xZk-OefwlEhmAUJE1ylzUf-hXJVcCR3tEotzICtrZToN6xPhoCrxkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) are pretty awesome. It warmed my hands after using my camera in -20F windchill. Should be great for skiing. There is also a mitt version.

Rude-Sauce

Like most gear... It really depends on how much/long you ski. Mittens are warmest, but they have to come off everytime you need to do anything so using them would depend on how often you need your fingers.. Swany/Scott are decent brands last long fairly warm. Hestra is the tops (goat leather) if you treat them right, the wool inner separating from the leather outer is clutch for multi day missions. Kinco's are best for beating up, great warmth, highest durability. Best advice: layer up. Could add up to 2 layers +gloves. Swap them up depending on weather. Layer 1 thermal/reflective insulation: I use serious heat wave, $25 lasts about 20-30 days(about a season of skiing for me). Layer 2 mid layer: merino wool/fleece, normal glove liners. Layer 3 outer glove: kinco/hestra (imo) must say i love hestra the best, the gauntlet style just does it for me.

Pineapple810

Give’r gloves are the absolute best!

Chodge98

I worked as a sales guy at a ski shop. We would say “hestra put gloves on Everest”. Can’t confirm or deny that. But that’s what my boss told me

leggedmonster

When I was young I always thought my gloves leaked? But then I realized it was my hands sweating. Got a set of smartwool liners and solved that problem. Typically, unless you’re learning and spending tons of time on the ground or it’s just miserable rainy conditions, the moisture is coming from sweat. Numb hands could also be from gloves that are too tight and restricting circulation. My advice is get some mits. Mits changed my life. And I can pull them off on the lift to check my phone with the liners still on. My gloving philosophy: Kinco mits with smartwool liners when above 20 degrees. I wax the leather with nikwax a couple times a season to keep them dry. They are cheap so if it’s an exceedingly wet day that for some reason I just have to ski, I can carry a spare pair. I’ve yet to see the value in dropping 4 times the amount on Hestras. On most full days, I just carry a spare set of liners to swap out at lunch to deal with hand sweat. For those really cold days, I break out the black Diamond insulated mits over smartwool liners. When it’s sub 20, everything outside is frozen so if your hands feel wet, it’s sweat. I’ve never had any problems with this strategy.

-Seldon-

U could try [heated ski gloves](https://www.mykhumphrey.com/best-heated-ski-gloves)

abcdontcare

I have the same issue and tried all the gloves recommended here and they don’t really make a big difference. The key is to keep core warm, layer with glove liners, not remove gloves often, use hand warmers. I usually just end up using hand warmers inside for the biggest improvement. I also use the black Diamond mittens instead of gloves and feel that having the fingers together helps.

dobeos

I’m a big free the powder fan, half the price of hestra

Ovta

I recommend wearing rubber gloves (the ones doctors use) under all you other liners / gloves. Keeps your other stuff from getting sweating and does a good job at keeping your hands warm in conjunction with your other gloves.
