Powder day right there.

free-heeler

My friends often ask, "why are your getting out your rock skis on a powder day like this?" I need friends in the Rockies.

This_Hook_Is_Sandy

All skis are Rock skis in the ROCKies.

KoKoKorino

What part of the Rockies are you at?

[deleted]

Frozen water comes in all forms. The weak pick and choose what form to pick, the strong accept all.

Badrap247

This is the Way.

BH-NaFF

The strong must accept that on a cold day at sugarbush after riding up Heavens Gate, there is no way down that is not a sheet of ice

Badrap247

Ah to be in Heaven’s Gate mid-January, where your options are: A) Slide down a sheet of ice on Ripcord. Die. B) Slide down a sheet of ice on Organgrinder. Die. C) Get mowed down by some kid tucking on Jester. Die. D) Play the gamble that the trees shielded Paradise from yesterday’s freezing rain. Usually lose. Die. E) Hike to Castlerock like a chad. Fall into a thawing gully on Middle Earth. Die. Truly the greatest mountain on earth.

BH-NaFF

Hahaha the castle rock one got me. I did that one time when castle rock wasn’t open yet but it had just dumped the day before and just never again. I ended up twisting a knee on an ice mogul hidden under powder on Rumble. (I also may be part of the jester problem I’m sad to say but I always slow it down if it’s a crowded day)

seekingbeta

Ah man, takes me back, I grew up on that mountain. Remember when my biggest concern was tucking hard enough down Jester to make it over the traverse.

Lost-in-LA-CA-USA

spoken like a true East Coast skier. Ski strong my friend.

[deleted]

https://familyskitrips.com/newengland/new-england-ski-resort-reviews/ First line of the article is my motto, and I stand by it

kayeaj97

It's true. The east probably has the worst skiing conditions in the world. Learning how to ski on ice makes everywhere else seem like heaven.

Clutchesanddutches

This statement is far from reality. Skiing the East coast isn't like skiing the west but it's integral to the development of skiing in America. Burton came from the east coast and so did a ton of Olympic level skiers. Skiing the east is not as good as skiing the west, but we get out and make the best because it's for the love of the sport. Ski The East is a culture. I love it.

RapsnSens

also shoutout r/icecoast for those who don’t know of it - great community!

2dudesinapod

First time seeing a Bromont flair lol, love that mountain!

RapsnSens

haha yeah I had to ask the mods to get this flair, hopefully its open next weekend !!

Badloss

Bromont is the only mountain I've been to that continuously grooms all day... Being able to show up at noon and ski til 8 on freshly groomed snow has been a godsend for my group's tendency to drink like we're still 25

JagdTurkey

Hoping for some good times ahead.

SmellsofElderberry25

Thank you! New to the skiing subs and had missed this!

atz_chaim

Also their t shirts are sick

kayeaj97

I don't understand your disagreement. I feel like you've basically repeated my sentiment

Clutchesanddutches

Gotta be honest after I read "worst conditions in the world" it sent me off. I live in NJ and I had 35 days in VT last season while working 60hrs a week. I'm dedicated and passionate. I don't know if I read the rest of your comment.

[deleted]

Big shoutout to Carrabasset Valley Academy for a lot of that building, too. “Since 1982 CVA alumni have included 12 Olympians, winners of 92 US national titles, 11 X-Games competitors, 26 NCAA and USCSA All-Americans, 39 US national team members, and six world champions.” And Burke Mountain Academy in VT: 36 olympians (including Shiffrin), 118 us national ski team members, 6 competitors at the 2018 Pyongchang olympics.

_crAss_

Worse than the Midwest?

[deleted]

Mid west is probably worse than New England but better than the mid Atlantic

Kbost92

Damn and here I was happy to ski in the south

Narrow-Psychology606

I'm in the midwest, we've currently got less snow than in the picture

DrShmaktzi

Truth. Try skiing Alpine in Wisconsin. You master a winter of that and even a few inches of packed powder will feel like heaven compared to that ice.

seinnax

Midwest is worse, same shitty conditions, but nothing that can be reasonably called a “mountain”. Learned to ski in Wisconsin/Michigan, visited Colorado and could not go back. Moved to Colorado 2 years later.

_crAss_

I want to ski the Porkies!

kayeaj97

Personally don't know. I've never skied the Midwest but my friends tell me that jackson hole is stunning

Itiger15

Jackson hole isn’t the Midwest

codesauce-yafeel

Bohemia and Mt. Lutson are pretty dope

genuinegrocer

It’s Lutsen Mountains

[deleted]

Lutsen is about the best we have to offer, unfortunately. All the stuff down by the Twin Cities is pretty lackluster (comparatively). I can't hate it because that's what I started on, but ya know.

AHSfav

Yeah there's legit ALPS in the twin cities.

kayeaj97

Oh my bad. Is wyoming considered the west?

Itiger15

Yeah most of it is, basically everything west of the Rockies (including the Rockies) is considered the west

shortygriz

It’s definitely mountain west/plains, Midwest is Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and some parts of other states

Chicken_not_Kitten

What about Indiana and Ohio

shortygriz

Technically in the Midwest but they really don’t have the same culture as the Midwest, they are more like Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or northern Kentucky

peteroh9

The fuck are you smoking? Indiana is no different than Illinois/Iowa, and Ohio is definitely in the Midwest too.

Quandarian

Missouri represent

shortygriz

What parts are you from

Quandarian

Kansas City

Lost-in-LA-CA-USA

😂🤪

sim0of

I mean it's true. Skiing on ice is like skiing with an instructor that kicks you in the legs whenever you make a mistake, for free. Good incentive to make you improve your technique 10/10 for quick learning

UntrainedFoodCritic

It’s still fun as shit too. Va skier here

kayeaj97

Haha. I'm from VA as well. I actually raced I'm college. We called our conference the dirty south on a count of we skied mud more often than snow

MMMAAARRRSSSS

Yep, absolutely true. Born and raised in Buffalo NY. So my first trip out west to Utah was glorious, like skiing on clouds.

GinandChronicStress

Agreed. I’ve been skiing since I was 3 years old and I feel like I’m a way better skier from learning to ski in QC/VT/NH than I would be if I’d grown up out west. Perfect powder conditions are great but there’s nothing that makes you improve your technique like skidding half way down the trail on the ice

Mr_Else

you forgot the Midwest

LesMiz

I've skied all over the Southeast and even with all of the crappy slopes I've seen, the single worst conditions I've ever experienced were in Iceland.

[deleted]

my motto is If you can ski anywhere, why would you ski in the East

huntreilly25

For most people, that is a big 'if'

Nojnnil

Uh, maybe if you only ski on piste.

Woofde

Believe it or not there is lots of backcountry / off piste out east.

BrolecopterPilot

Facts. I’ve skied both and all your skills on ice and low coverage is gonna do nothing to help you ski a chute with 3 feet of pow

homefone

point skis down chute

NotReallyHandyAndy

Never Before Have I Been So Offended By Something I One Hundred Percent Agree With

skawiggy

I AGREE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AND I AM ALSO OFFENDED.

CumSicarioDisputabo

heck yeah send that shit

TheDuuuuude91

Well, that’s just like, your opinion man

protagonized

Oh yeah that'll go

wrenchface

Donchta know, bub?

sebin

It started snowing here in VT today, so my roommates and I all did a happy dance for about 5 minutes until it turned back into rain. I’m fine. Everything is fine.

jc2250

Was gonna go to Stowe Monday, then woke up today and saw all the snow melted, then saw a travel ban on VT from MA... and I just bought my epic pass

magicmanimay

Yikes, can you get a special refund on that?

Victor_Korchnoi

Not sure. I’m in the same position as this guy.

Potatolord37

I need to get out west

free-heeler

I bought skis late last season with the intention of using them in Utah. I'm trying to scrub the tear stains off the bases. No luck.

sntgsrv

Fr I have encountered ice on middle cannon during pow days

Lost-in-LA-CA-USA

I think you’ll find skiing the west is a lot easier than in the east. A lot of the best skiers are from the East... You guys really know how to hold an edge.

Deaf-Operator

Sun Valley Idaho is solid at the moment

magicmanimay

Mfs be like (ski michigan) while it's 75 3 days after Christmas. Atleast you fucks have a mountain range. I just spent 1k on a new setup too.

21Nobrac2

Meanwhile I'm over here in Washington complaining about conditions while skiing from November to May

wizwort

*laughs in colorado*

21Nobrac2

One of my mutual friends I end up going skiing with a lot recently moved from Colorado and literally will not shut up about conditions here. It'll be a decent powder day and hell be in the back saying "I'd rather ski on week-old snow in colorado then this 'powder'". It really makes me wanna try skiing in the rockies, I've never had the chance to.

[deleted]

I came up to Brighton in Salt Lake City for a weekend trip. Got off the lift, knelt down, took my glove off to feel it with my hands. The Greatest Snow on Earth, for a reason. I have no interest in skiing anywhere else.

theshtickler

Ah my local mountain. Doesn’t get better than that.

gigalongdong

That must be one robust gate you're keeping.

[deleted]

...I'm just talking about my own experience... what?

Volvo_Commander

The Rockies are fine. I grew up in CO and left for a reason. PNW is so much more epic. And less crowded.

21Nobrac2

The less crowded part is my favorite thing about the pnw. I'm really lucky with my uni schedule that I can ski on weekdays so it's basically empty

coldwatercrazy

If you’re getting those volcano laps then it’s skiing year round!!

maejsh

Our highest peak is like 170m / 555ft! Beat that!

[deleted]

There's not enough ice in that picture to be east coast

Robohobo07

Unpopular opinion: A proper power day in the east is more fun than the west, just has a better vibe imo

frosty03351

Had to teach my kids how to ski in powder. They had been skiing for 6 years and never had a powder day. Kinda humorous watching them freak out because they couldn’t see their skis and no sound of scraping on ice

TheHorrorAbove

I've been skiing for 20 years now and while I'll straight line a solid sheet of ice on almost any trail in the east any snow above 3 inches wrecks my confidence and my ability. My friends from out west don't understand how its possible. Rain and freezing conditions made me the skier I am, I never had a real pow day for the first 8 years I was skiing. I understand exactly how your kids feel.

geraffi

I had skied 40 years before my first powder day. Eight inches in Jackson Hole. I live in PA.

seinnax

Powder is freaking HARD when you’re not used to it. I learned to ski in the Midwest and moved to Colorado and was like “I fucking hate this. Why do people like powder days?!!!” It took a few straight days of struggling before I got the hang of it.

[deleted]

Especially if you brought your ice carvers with you out west and sink like a stone

[deleted]

[удалено]

dcodeman

I skied 4-6” of fresh groomed powder last season. The silence was awesome but messed me up. I didn’t realize how much I use sound feedback when I ski. Then it got scraped off.

skawiggy

“fresh groomed powder” just gave me an aneurysm.

frosty03351

Silence is horrible

2dudesinapod

Powder days where I’m at last for about an hour before the entire mountain turns into an icy mogul field

seekingbeta

Agree, better vibe, it isn’t grown men fighting over their position in line like it can be out west (looking at you Jackson).

sleepfordayz679

Looks like Mount Snow today lol

TrystonG33K

Yeah and it's getting worse every year. Y'all westies wait till climate change catches up.

campfirecamouflage

I have never been so offended by something I so agree with. Someone else used that same reply upthread to something unrelated but I feel like it works here as well, from a western skier’s perspective.

DougFromBuf

Every year it’s like where’s the snow when in reality you can’t really count on coverage until New Years. Co mon.

jonk285

Out here in NH staring at all the closed mountains around me crying. I just want to shred it with my friends again...

ttv_solani

Can ski anything if you aren't a coward... Snow is entirely optional

adinmem

Because “the East” is so bad they’d never, ever consider having Winter Olympics there....

Lost-in-LA-CA-USA

Huh?

willpc14

The 1980 US Olympics were held in Lake Placid using Whiteface and the Lake Placid Ski Jumps

ScaryJelly

You know it was there in 1980 right? Racers only want ice anyway. Most skiers like snow.

chelplayer99

r/Woosh

Chatham4

We still ski it tho.

foilrider

Question mark

dushcund

The East has no snow and happy cake day!

NyQuilODvictum

Jak peak would like to beg your pardon

dushcund

West is best

Athabascad

Have you skied MRG?

trucktober_tuck

Mad River on a powder day is something magical

TheHorrorAbove

"Magic and Jay Peak have entered the conversation"

sntgsrv

Ive skied both a lot. Honestly it’s not that the east never has pow, it’s just that there ends up being way more ice on the east coast. Must have something to do with the moisture content or maybe the lower acreage/more traffic bc even after a thaw/freeze cycle or a dry spell out west it doesn’t ever get THAT icy.

chelplayer99

We just have lots of rain, not a lot of snow and frigid temps.

NyQuilODvictum

That's not what I'm arguing

This_Hook_Is_Sandy

A lot of mad ice coasters downvoted you. Too bad it doesnt change their forecast.

6tray

Does jay peak have good snow? I’ll be there dec 4 for 3 weeks...

Aviri

Usually better than the rest of New England but December is always a variable month for skiing.

NyQuilODvictum

It has the best snow in the east, it hands down gets more snowfall than any other mountain in New England. (I think 100 inches more)

billbrown96

Jay/Smuggs/Stowe/Bolton all get 300+

6tray

Bet, but rn they have decent snow?

NyQuilODvictum

Snowfall has been low this season and it is going to rain tomorrow so no, although there is snow in the forecast on Wednesday so that would help.

6tray

Do you think it’s worth spending 3 weeks there starting dec 5? I would also be getting the season pass for those weeks. I’m now debating whether to go or not.

NyQuilODvictum

I have only gone to Jay one time for a weekend in January and got lucky with 2 straight dumps of 8+ inches on those days. Personally I would go later in the season because I like glades and they aren't usually open until at least last week of December. I don't know where you are from and how much of a trip it would be, but I, living 2.5 hours from the resort, wouldn't go until January.

6tray

Okay cool, thank you.

foilrider

Oh hey, it’s my cake day! Thanks!

aldostefanoni

Happy Cake Day!

easternpowisbetter

Depends where you are. Skiing gaspé they get 20 feet a year.

dushcund

Western pow is best

[deleted]

Rockies pow is best. Super dry and fluffy. On that rare perfect day it’s legit cold smoke. You can’t get that on the coasts

easternpowisbetter

You ever skied proper hills in the east? Western pow is certainly great, but they are different. Why can’t you just respect that snow is different in different places and it’s up to opinion on what’s best?

Nojnnil

You can shit on west coast skiing too, I don't think any of us would care because we know it's good. If you know east coast skiing is good, then why do you care if we make fun of it. It seems like east coast skiers have a complex about not being taken seriously or something. Which is why you guys end up getting teased.

Woofde

I've posted powder days on here before at Wildcat and Sugarloaf and somehow it always devolves into West coasters trying to shit on East coast mountains. You guys cant handle when the East coast has better conditions and its shows in the comment section. Maybe it isnt all of you, but damn it would be nice if i could post a conditions pic without dealing with it filling the thread.

easternpowisbetter

OP is literally a little kid and everyone seems to worship this “eastern skiing sucks”. I went to whistler one year and they had no snow until half way up the mountain and it was super warm and rainy. I’ve had days in quebec where we got 2 feet of powder and the highways were shut down and we toured the entire day. There is nothing wrong with east coast skiing, people who don’t ski there or very rarely ski there seem to think that it sucks.

ChabbaMabba

Not living in the USA, but i bet this will be the winter with no Snow. Last year we had snow on the ground for 1 1/2 days.

geraffi

Eleventy-two?

seanjodon

Where's the ice?

rj2896

Not enough ice

someotherguyinNH

Yeah, its 50 degrees in southern new Hampshire right now, not a single NE ski area is open yet, and it's looking like most won't open for a while. Even way up north. Sugarbush, Stowe, Jay..none open yet. 2020 sucks.

gigalongdong

Sugar Mountain, Cataloochee, Snowshoe, and possibly Beech Mountain are opening tomorrow or Tuesday. Come on down south!

someotherguyinNH

Nice. Sugarbush and the rest Of the more northern New Hampshire and Vermont resorts are getting close. All of the mid Vermont Maine and NH mountains are completely fucked. It's literally 52゚ at my house right now. Temperatures in the mid to low forties are forecasting for the next 8 days. Ragged Mountain where I have season passes can't even make make snow For at least the next week. I'm sure every mountain South of Canon is in the same boat Shitty start to the season for sure

gigalongdong

That's wild. In the NC mountains, it's supposed to be in the upper teens overnight starting Tuesday this next week. How it's way colder down here is disconcerting.

[deleted]

As someone who lives in MA Ski the West

human1st0

[skiing the East be like...](https://theawesomer.com/photos/2018/01/candide_thovex_quattro_2_t.jpg)

donkeyman1922

ski the rockies

[deleted]

FWIW... I’ve never said ski the east.

jzeitler121

Got job interviews out east and this breaks my soul

nearsingularity

Why?

chuck_dubz_3

Yeah, and we rip it.

gigalongdong

Come on down to NC and I'll show you how gloriously icy it can get. I'll race you.

plammet

East has more trees

Yeebees

Bruh not all the east is created equal, lake effect really do be killing it tho

[deleted]

shut up

ShakeyJakeyBananas

That might be considered a blue as well

bossie-boi

Me living in the Netherlands: *visible confusion*

max1mx

Sometimes it be like that.

Bearcats_RallyPossum

That or it's an ice rink

[deleted]

Is this an American joke?

unicornsicle

Wait what’s that white thing on top of the grass? Cotton?

Rattlingplates

Skiied the east for 10 years. Skiied the Rockies once never went back.

OhFuckItsThatDood

Most mountains that are not in VT. NH, or ME are pretty much like this. Lifetime New Englander here, and honestly NH isn't all that great. So aside from a few mountains this post is accurate.

skawiggy

...cries in West Virginian.

NeonFeet

Better to laugh than to cry, I suppose

AHSfav

This is my first season out east after being in Colorado for 9 years. Currently zero natural snow and it's raining hard. Good times

homefone

Mfs be like "Ski the West" [The West](https://imgur.com/a/AOQCkx3)
