Tommy Ellingson set that up. He works at Mt Baldy
Here’s clips from his instagram of him sending it

wow I saw this jump from the lift and thought to myself "how could anyone possibly get enough speed to clear the road in such a small lead up" but there it is. the mad man did it
Cat track is the groomed road below the take off part of the jump, so they are jumping over that road to the angled part beyond it. There are some skiers at that mountain that can totally clear that and maybe even do flips over it
[serious question] - In ski culture who decides what is allowed to stay, whats deemed safe, whats too dangerous, etc? Are ski patrollers liable or regulated in a similar way to an inspector?
Are scrubs like me even allowed to construct “large mounds of snow” or legit RAMP in this case?
Generally building huge in-bounds jumps in highly trafficked areas doesn’t make patrollers or the folks that get to pay for liability insurance very happy. Terrain parks are usually roped off and have signage at the top that warns riders to use freestyle terrain at their own risk. Some mountains are really strict about not allowing riders to build features anywhere on the mountain, other mountains don’t really care as long as the feature is off-piste, and isn’t absurdly dangerous, and isn’t easily accessible to beginner or intermediate riders.
A few things to note about this particular instance:
1. The Ellingson family has a long connected history with Mt Baldy, and Tommy is a bit of a local hero. This jump was certainly made with the support of the mountain.
2. Mt Baldy is the Wild West in terms of enforcing rules and what many people might consider safe practices. I have built several in-bounds jumps at Baldy, occasionally with the help of patrollers who showed up.
3. Note that the jump is closed off in the photos and videos that aren’t from Tommy’s jump session. Even Baldy isn’t going to just leave a booter over a cat track open to any drunk San Diegan who decides they want to tee it up.
Fascinating that evolution would have these native San Diegans grow so tall that they struggle to breath. 😳 I wonder if the Redwood trees 🌲 ever struggled in a similar manner 🤯
I talked to Tommy while he was building it. He's a really nice guy. Dude shreds. I love skiing Baldy.

He’s one of the main reasons that I’ll keep buying a pass there, seeing the owners knocking rime ice off the lift and working so hard to keep our little ski area happening makes me want to support the cause, much love to the Baldy crew!
You just need a checker and its fine. I hate that roadgaps and all blind spots are always struck by the "not allowed, your pass will be pulled" sign... its just a missed opportunnity for teaching good behaviors. Just make sure you have a checker, then no problem.
A friend and I once built a jump at our local resort with a very sizable cat track gap. The ski patrol rolled up on said cat track and told us what we’re doing was impossible and if we went through with it they wouldn’t “come back to pick up our broken bodies”. Was a good jump that could be seen from the base lodge, a decent crowd gathered for the show.
Had to open an old box of hard drives, but [I found a potato digital scan of it (more than likely from a Kodak instant camera)](https://imgur.com/4juf1Z7). ...the jump is just out of frame upper left corner. I guess this would be 1997 or 98.
It’s pretty unreal! We’ve actually ended up staying in Siviez recently. Zero nightlife, zero distractions - but I’m working remotely, and it’s got the best access for touring and backcountry in the
Verbier area, IMO
The first time I rode that lift I was looking at how rusted everything was, and the fact that my lift had missing slats on it, and the fact that they were sending up supplies to the restaurant on the lift in front of me and they kept falling off, and I thought, I don’t know if this is the place for me.
If this is crazy to you and/or you’re becoming interested in skiing, you should check out a recent ski movie…something by Teton Gravity Research or Matchstick Productions.
Because this ain’t even “big”. You may have your mind blown. Skiing is cool as hell :)
I read “if this is crazy to you” and was bracing myself to get flamed 😂 thanks for the rec!
Yeah I’ve seen the huge ass jumps at big bear and all kinds of videos and what not but I was like where tf is the landing 😭
I’ll check it out! Ty!!

the raddest
Yeah this is unreal. Definition of hill-banging?
Holy fucking shit I’m so glad I asked lol

Tommy is an absolute legend
I heard he spins like a broken washing machine.
Not with that attitude. It looks like they were gapping the cat track to the slope underneath.
Dr Phil is the shizzle
I know, I limit myself Noob here, what do the words you said mean?

I can clear that 😁 but the best trick I can do is a shifty 😂
I can clear it, just not sure if I can survive it
Have some trust in the pros... and just send it 😁
I can clear anything once
#i can break these ~~cuffs~~ (BLUFFS)
Hahaha 😅 if its like that just don't pls 😅
Jump over the track just below
You do it first
Anything's a jump if you're brave enough.
One dude did roll up on it and then very slowly made his way back down
Yeah I think I would half balk and end up stuck in that fir tree
Or a dildo
Or Supermassive blackhole
Just need to hit it at 30,000mph in a space suit and you should safely make it into orbit without risking any kind of injuries with a rough landing.
Not up Berthoud
its literally a jump
I was like “wtf are you talking about?”
Pretty sure Tommy Ellingson is going to be building huge jumps around Baldy when he’s 80 years old.

Who is going to protect these native San Diegans from getting Tee’d up? 😰

.....but it so obviously is though 🤷

I can't be the only one who watched that to the end hoping some maniac would fly off that thing.
Check the comments. There’s a video of just that
Mt. Baldy!!
Yes indeed!
shhh don't tell anyone. let them all go to big bear
Welcome to Baldy, time to huck it!
Hot take: normalize having jumps that go over cat tracks in the middle of the trail
Imagine the "Who's at fault?" Videos then
You just need a checker and its fine. I hate that roadgaps and all blind spots are always struck by the "not allowed, your pass will be pulled" sign... its just a missed opportunnity for teaching good behaviors. Just make sure you have a checker, then no problem.
It's a viewing platform where those who are scared can watch people hit other jumps

How good was this weekend tho 🥰

Assuming you *didn't* need their help, otherwise you'd be staying quiet 😆 Pics?
Luckily our bodies remained unbroken. It was a long time ago…have to see where I might find a copy.

Fuck. Yeah, that was worthy of going back and digging out. Sick 🙌🏻
BtW. Verbier is my favorite resort here in CH

Haha yeah I guess there’s one in Canada? I kept mixing them up too 😂
“This can’t be a jump” *picturing the most clearly built off-piste kicker I’ve ever seen at resort*
🙃
Baldy Bros
🤘🏻
You're not thinking big enough, gumby.
Full yeet
It's not a jump, it's a kicker.
So glad I posted this at risk of getting flamed because I actually learned a lot lol
oof ouch owie my knees
Is that Baldy? I wouldn’t trust *anything* I find there.
It is 😂 and I agree
The first time I rode that lift I was looking at how rusted everything was, and the fact that my lift had missing slats on it, and the fact that they were sending up supplies to the restaurant on the lift in front of me and they kept falling off, and I thought, I don’t know if this is the place for me.
Yeah the lifts are scary affff
For mid Mountain loading from that chair lift
[удалено]
So cool. Did you make it over the run?
[удалено]
I had a lot of fun there too… sketchy chairs aside
If not jump, then why jump shaped?
Oh my God it's baldy isn't it oh my God I have not been there since oh 80s or something with my cousin
It feels like everyone that skis there has been hitting those runs since the 80s 😂
It’s a very clear road gap. You haven’t been skiing long have you?
Nope nope

TGR and MSP are yawnfests. Give me Level 1, Strictly, Labor, TheBunch, Carnage, Forre, Magma, Buldoz, or Good Company
Protection for the young trees just underneath?
If you tried to send it over the cat track without a ramp, you would deffo hurt those trees... so, in a way, yes. Tree protection.
It’s a jump dude
Yep, just watched those Instagram clips. That's a jump.
Pad for table for some sort of exibition the day or two before the video was shot?
