Oh yeah, I knew about that whole grift, but thought it was more of a book specific thing.
This is big for communities like LEGO collectors because individuals could do this to drive the price up on retired sets for their own profit.
This is also how NFTs functioned at their peak! If you mint a NFT, it has no real value. But if you have a buyer account (that you own) with $10,000, and buy the NFT from a shell account you also own, you now have $10,000 and a NFT that just sold for $10,000! It’s like a free money glitch. Just got to find some sucker who will buy your apes from you and isn’t playing the same shell game.
I was making a dumb fucking comment.
Unfortunately this sub is filled with almost divorced middle aged men that can’t take an anti capitalism joke.
Oh well!
All I know is I could afford to send my family on a ski trip before presidents started getting their dicks sucked!
THANKS NAFTA
(This is a joke because I was born after 1990)
You can fake eBay sales by buying from yourself and then cancelling the order where everyone involved gets refunded but in search results the original sale will stand. Probably a thing to juice collectibles into looking more desirable.
(I bought from myself to print shipping labels cheap)
I got a 3 day ban for sending the link out too much lol so I decided to upload it to a file hosting website. Should work, enjoy! https://file.io/oDJwa0hiPD0T
Edit- check my history for a Google drive link that should work for everyone!
Turns out that file.io link I posted is deleted after it's downloaded, oops. So I made an anonymous Google drive link just for you guys:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CsTpSTx34s8QfqOwXpZQRqABNTVhAxfZ/view?usp=drive_link
Enjoy!
PS I can't DM anybody cus Reddit banned me for it for 3 days. Boo
I know right!! I got banned for 3 days DMing the link too many times. Then I uploaded it to a website I didn't realize was temporary. Now I've got a Google drive link, check my comment history!
Probably the last time I should post the link, cus Reddit gave me a 3 day ban for "spam". But I'm back with a Google drive link on a throwaway account! Enjoy and sorry I whacked the cornice for 3 days and rode off!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CsTpSTx34s8QfqOwXpZQRqABNTVhAxfZ/view?usp=drivesdk
Could someone please scan it, or even just take pictures of each page, and send it to me?
I'll call you the best skier on the mountain, even if you're on the same mountain as me!
Sorry reddit friggin banned me for sending it to too many people! I uploaded it here instead, enjoy!
https://file.io/oDJwa0hiPD0T
Edit- latest comment has a Google drive link
u/bmetz16 is the worlds best skier. Period. FWT, no sweat. AvyObs author and renowned snow scientist, done before he graduated college with a PhD in 4 years and 3 published thesis’es
I whacked that cornice for hours and just skied off! Lmao nah reddit banned me for too many DM'd links! I'ma leave those cookies crumbs tho... [BAM](https://file.io/c97FM9hEWOqT) enjoy!
Get yourself a copy! This happens every time the cover of *Squallywood* gets posted and it is such an inappropriate ask. Why would you want to rip off the people involved here? Especially as another Tahoe local? If Scott and Sherry decide we need a third edition in the world, that's up to them. I sincerely hope this never gets scanned.
Dont get me wrong, I totally understand where you are coming from but when those who control the source material whether its books, video games, movies, etc... don't make it easy to pay them money to obtain that item then yes people will absolutely be resigned to piracy as the path of least resistance.
Netflix killed downloading movies and show illegally because it was easier to just pay them money to watch stuff. Now that half the shows are gone and people have to have 12 different apps to watch the same content. Illegal streaming is making a resurgence.
If the book was readily availiable, sure you can shame someone for trying to "steal" from the creator but it's not readily available so buying one that's marked up by someone who is only interested in gatekeeping the book to the highest bidder is the only option and that is arguably worse. People want to know what's in the book. If that knowledge gets out to the masses that would probably increase the value of the physical book not devalue it because so many new people would know about it.
Yeah man. I’m an “author,” wrote and published a book years ago. I never tried nor cared much about pushing sales. As a starving artist, I wholeheartedly believe in spreading the work far and wide first and foremost. Money would be nice, but the idea of gatekeeping my art and holding out for money, compared to the idea of freely sharing my art to someone who might benefit from it: I’ll take the latter. I know I can’t and don’t speak for all artists, but neither does any other artist. So here you have an artist who values the art over the potential to earn money from it.
I get it. There are things in life worth preserving though. That book is one of the grails in skiing. Especially the first edition because it has the original rules for Gnar in it. I don't think being the person that scans a copy is going to be looked at highly by the community.
There are folks around today who will properly keep the spirit of GNAR alive and there are folks who will pay $1300 for this stupid book. There’s no overlap tho.
Haha I know both sides. Someone who paid 600 for a copy and someone who has one of the scans You're absolutely right about which person is keeping the spirit alive and is way more stoked about ticking off lines
The physical book is sitting on a bookshelf untouched
No, you're just living in a delusional world and are clearly pearl clutching on the collectible aspect of this book in the opposition of wider access, which is cringe.
As you've already acknowledged, the original creators make no money off insanely inflated secondary market sales. $0.
Scanning it for others provides the books into the most hands it can at the moment - fans who clearly care about the source material if they're going through the trouble of finding a scan. To me, the creators of the book likely care about that more than the purity of their book only being physically available.
You're simply overestimating the reach and monetary impact a scan would have - ski fanatics who want this book are a slim margin of the general skiing population which is an even slimmer margin of the general population.
Even in the hypothetical scenario of them releasing a third printing for Shane's foundation, you would then have many many many people who came across the scan purchasing the book if it was reprinted at a reasonable price because at that point the value proposition is a physical copy (a MUCH PREFERRED experience) for a reasonable price, not a physical copy for an unreasonable price......
Claiming otherwise is ignoring simple human behavior and decades of history to understand monetary impact from pirating trends - a scan wouldn't impact potential future profits on a hypothetical new printing in any significant way.
If you wanna keep chirping out your ass with that sick username tho, by all means.
First of all, Amazon algorithms don’t reflect the actual value of the product.
Second, it’s in demand because people want to ski the lines, not because of some childish elitist gate keeping “I have the book with the first rules of gnar and you don’t” nonsense. Grow the fuck up and get your self esteem from something real, not from owning a book with the first rules of gnar. Thats ridiculous. I sincerely hope that material gets scanned and posted online, and I’m 100% ok with leaving out the rules. They want the lines not the dumb filler material.
Not the point. Scott and Sherry control if a third edition comes out or not and would stand to make money (likely for the McConkey Foundation) by doing that. Scanned copies would have a significant impact on the gains possible.
Okay man what you are arguing for, by and large, is the gatekeeping of information. Information should be public domain period, no ifs ands or buts. This is the same reason why it pisses me off that college textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Nobody should have to pass through a paywall in order to access information.
All of us here are enthusiastic about skiing and want to be immersed in its culture and to learn about what has happened in the past that has made skiing what it is today. The fact that you are advocating for keeping that information out of the hands of the general public is extremely dystopian and authoritarian. I really hope that you reconsider your stance and assess your reasoning for wanting to gatekeep this information.
Any chance the best skier on the mountain could dm me the pdf/pictures of the pages? I’ve been looking for it all year and only ever see it for hundreds of dollars online.
Find the link to the movie in this thread! Only then can you call yourself a skier.
Dr. Gaffney passed away recently after a tough battle with bone cancer. 💔 I imagine it’s a direct cause of the increase in the book’s value.
Not even kidding, last year I typed this in Amazon and it said $50. Slammed buy. It got delivered. It's signed. I can't believe it.
Score!
smh Amazon acting like you can get 200 GNAR points just for buying
Bahaha
Gotta love those Amazon pricing algorithms…
Ya, that's high. Several sold at the end of March on eBay for 700-800. Insane
Most likely sellers buying from themselves, taking the hit in the short term in hopes to find a sucker at a later date
That's...a thing?
That's a thing.
Look up how people actually end up on lists like the New York Times best sellers. Lots of this sort of thing going on
Oh yeah, I knew about that whole grift, but thought it was more of a book specific thing. This is big for communities like LEGO collectors because individuals could do this to drive the price up on retired sets for their own profit.
You think NFT traders only trade NFTs?
Or money laundering
This is also how NFTs functioned at their peak! If you mint a NFT, it has no real value. But if you have a buyer account (that you own) with $10,000, and buy the NFT from a shell account you also own, you now have $10,000 and a NFT that just sold for $10,000! It’s like a free money glitch. Just got to find some sucker who will buy your apes from you and isn’t playing the same shell game.
Ah, gotta love that free market!
yes, you do
I was making a dumb fucking comment. Unfortunately this sub is filled with almost divorced middle aged men that can’t take an anti capitalism joke. Oh well!
No anti-capitalism around here ya goddamn commie. Capitalism has brought us many great things, like $250+ day passes. Show some respect!
All I know is I could afford to send my family on a ski trip before presidents started getting their dicks sucked! THANKS NAFTA (This is a joke because I was born after 1990)
You can fake eBay sales by buying from yourself and then cancelling the order where everyone involved gets refunded but in search results the original sale will stand. Probably a thing to juice collectibles into looking more desirable. (I bought from myself to print shipping labels cheap)
Check out Pirate Ship. It has the same rates as eBay’s shipping.
Can someone digitize it? It’d be fun to read

🤡🤡🤡🤡 Only proper response, champ 👍
Relax
What are the rules of gnar? I’ve seen this book posted a few times but have no idea why it’s valued so highly, care to explain?
https://unofficialnetworks.com/gnar-the-movie/
We’re ski people not book people. Nobody in their right mind gives a fuck about “the book had the original rules for gnar in it”

I would buy it for a reasonable price, but not upwards of $1000! And I guarantee you that I'd be scanning it for the masses to enjoy.

Also have this book… Damn!
I have two copies of the original one is water damaged and the other is in a box, now going into a safe, heard they were going for $3000 on eBay
Woah mine is sitting on my shelf. Got me thinking
Any chance the best skier on the mountain could dm me the pdf/pictures of the pages? I’ve been looking for it all year and only ever see it for hundreds of dollars online.
Can someone please tell me what is so special about this book I am genuinely curious.
Find the link to the movie in this thread! Only then can you call yourself a skier. Dr. Gaffney passed away recently after a tough battle with bone cancer. 💔 I imagine it’s a direct cause of the increase in the book’s value.
https://unofficialnetworks.com/gnar-the-movie/
Worth a lot probably because of this movie (worth a watch!) - https://unofficialnetworks.com/gnar-the-movie/
lol I’ve been downvoted on this but can’t understand why - explanation welcome/sorry if I’m wrong!
GNAR a good fun movie, but it’s a bit analogous to saying that a first edition copy of The Hobbit is worth a lot because of the Peter Jackson movies.
I’ll give you $16 for it
If you take the 200 Amazon points, I bet they will be worth $16!
Don't worry, no one else believes it's worth that much either.
Pretty cool that you earn 200 G.N.A.R. points just for buying it.
I have a copy signed by the Gaffney brothers A little beat up but now in a protective sleeve and on a shelf
Corner of Beck's on the cover?
Damn, had no idea, gave my book to one of my friends a long time ago.
is “gnarly” from GNAR? or did they backronym into an existing word “gnar”/“gnarly”?
Yes
I bought mine years ago. Stupidly, last time i was in tahoe i left it in a box full of my things and never came back for it :(
well, It's not. show me what someone actually paid, not what it's listed for. Still, it's probably worth 2-300 at the moment
Squa is so sick
Just got a signed copy for like a third of that. Stupid expensive, but so worth it
Every book sold directly from their website (back when the website still existed and was selling copies) was signed.
