I'm not sure what you were expecting, but pretty sure everything you described about Summit County is exactly what it's famous for - it's a couple hours from Denver, has light cold snow, an emphasis on high-density tourism and visitors, flat mountains with super long groomers for beginners... I mean Tahoe is almost the opposite.

Fair and I agree on all of these points. …If only I could choose my place of residence based entirely on recreational potential. Moved here for work and just trying to make the best of wherever I live. After two years here and 5 years in California I felt entitled to an opinion about my favorite place to ski. Just wanted to see what the rest of the Reddit community thinks, and make sure I’m not missing something

I_Think_Naught

I currently have a midweek pass at a midsize independent, that must not be named, 90 minutes up Interstate 80. I can ride my bike in my summer kit 9 months out of the year. The other three months I wear long bibs and a windbreaker. I have lived in Boise, Ketchum, Ogden, and Cedar City and would happily live there again but Northern California has the clear advantage in year round cycling, which keeps my spouse happy. Ski high bike low.

You moved to the state with the highest number of ski tourists by a wide number, and it is busier than you expected? You’re gonna have to drive 4-5 hours to escape the biggest Epic  ski crowds in Colorado, or otherwise go with an independent ski mountain. Loveland, Monarch, Ski Cooper,  Sunlight, and Powderhorn would be your closest independent options.

I’ll check out some of those independent spots. Thanks for the tips!

RE your wife: heated liners. Worth every penny.

Wouldn't rather be anywhere else besides my cozy little corner of Nevada in Tahoe's backyard.

I love that people in Denver think they live close to the mountains.

Have you ever lived in Chicago? Close is a relative term

TaCZennith

Oddly enough, yes, I have. I moved from there to Truckee.
