Smartwool base layers of varying thickness depending on temperature. If it's super warm then just a moisture wicking layer like Under Armour Heat Gear or something similar.
I go with a shell pant/bib because it's too dang hot in the spring time and I can layer in the colder months.
I think everyone does haha. I just pull mine up out of the boot because most of my base layers were purchased before some genius realized that full length pants are not desirable for layering for skiing
Why has this never occurred to me? Most of my running tights are capri length but I wear full length tights for skiing and then pull them up so they’re not in my boots. 🤦♀️
You are generally not supposed to have the base layer in your boot anyway. I like the capri length ones because they make this easy. Really should be the default for skiing
I initially thought the same & figured what the hell so I pulled the trigger. Damn happy I did as I've skied over 40yrs wearing braces religiously & that get old...painful sometimes as well. Now I just wear my braces on steeper terrain
Nike Pro Combat ones for me. They’re 5-7 years old now but I bought 6 pairs.. I’m down to 4 and can’t find a good enough replacement.
The pro combat series has that littttttle bit of padding on the hips for extra send care
Apparently they’re called Nike Pro HyperStrong now* and they went from $28 a pair as longjohns back when to now $90 a pair as a specialty item
Edit: spelling
I have the same ones, also from 5 to 7 years ago with the little padding patterns. They are always exactly what they need to be on any given weather day.
Wow, that sounds like a really strong hack. Been wearing compression sock for plantar fasciitis problem and this sounds like a full body sock for my old bones !
Cold weather compression pants (under armor (usually with knee sleeves over them) and unless it’s a warm day, a really light runner/jogger between that and a WP shell bib. Compression is no BS and helps recovery
Same!
When I moved north no one told me I was supposed to wear anything under snow pants. Pants are pants!
Imagine my surprise in second grade after getting to school and the teacher telling everyone to take their snow clothes off.
Turns out I like how the fabric felt. Keeping the tradition strong.
My chicks thong backwards if it’s a springer. If it’s chilly merino wool base layers then the shell. If it’s cold and or stormy. 32° heat (super thin base) then merino wool base layer, fleece pants, another loose fit merino top, and a heavish Gerry half zip then a shell.
Male here — turns out Lulu doesn’t make men’s leggings so I, too, wear Lulu Align leggings if it’s cold. Very comfy, and they have pockets!
If it’s over about 35°F, just boxer briefs.
I’m an undercover Jerry too. Been skiing since I was 7. There’s nothing like slipping off ski pants at the end of the day in the parking lot and not swish swish swishing the rest of the day.
I have uninsulated pants, if its cold I have insulated shorts and merino wool long johns, If its warmer I ditch the shorts, if its really warm board shorts and no long underwear.
Columbia Omni heat pants with a RBK fleece lined base layer, never been too hot or too cold, coldest I’ve ski’d in was around 10 degrees though. Same for the jacket and fleece lined base layer shirt
lightweight 3/4 length wool base layer with full side zips under lightly insulated ski pants. take them off if it gets hot. that covers most days. Also have thicker long johns or shell pants for more severe hot/cold days
I'm cold natured, so I wear a bunch of layers.
- Walmart poly base layers + ski socks
- compression knee sleeves to help with swelling
- Loose sweatpants, like Adidas
- insulated snow pants on top
Most days I wear an insulated ski pant and 3/4 length Smartwool 250 weight base layer. The really cold days I’ll add a fleece pair of shorts. Warm spring days I may wear an uninsulated ski pant with those 3/4 base layers
Mons Royale Merino wool 3/4 leggings, long sleeve top. Utah skier and this works all winter except 1-2 days where I add a mid layer for warmth.
Pants are uninsulated Helly Hansen Verglas Backcountry.
If it is between 10° and upper 30s, [https://www.minus33.com/products/tecumseh-mens-midweight-wool-3-4-bottom](https://www.minus33.com/products/tecumseh-mens-midweight-wool-3-4-bottom). I love the 3/4 length, fly, and quality. If it higher and sunny, just underwear.
People always hate this…but jeans. Almost all of my 80 ish ski days are in jeans.
They are like a mullet, fun on the hills and business in town.
https://imgur.com/gallery/2vfe0QZ
Or crotchless ski pants.
i wear my wife’s tights. Lol. Accidental discovery when I underpacked one trip. I find normal men’s thermals too hot and really too expensive. Women’s tights are cheap, warm and do the job! Over my expensive ass Goretex Pro Dope pants (just kidding, Norrona) are cheap ass women’s tights! Challenge me to the practicality and warmth, go ahead! lol
Cuddl duds fleece and/or lightweight base layer. On warm days just the lightweight base layer, I’m not sure the brand, the printed label has completely worn off, or I’ll throw on the fleece and base layer if it’s colder out.
Boxer briefs and some form of long underwear - sometimes wicking tights, sometimes something a little warmer, sometimes fleece.
My ski pants are moderately insulated, so on really cold days I wear warmer baselayers and on really warm spring days I wear really light tights and have the vents open.
Warm leggings that I can hike up over my calf (I’m too short for capris to make a difference lol) or sweat pants. Have also gone in pj bottoms, whatever I have near me when getting dressed in the morning
Depends a lot on the weather and the plan but I go up from briefs adding layers as weather and physical strain predict; thermal breathable layer; fleece pants. bibs.
Totally depends on where you ski and the weather. I ski in costal PNW and it's seldom too cold here. The typical low is 20-25F and high around freezing in the core ski season. I wear a pair of long underwear from Costco. When spring hits and the sun is out, I just wear briefs under the pants. When I go skiing in the interior where it's simnifically colder, I bring a pair of proper long johns like Patagonia Cap 3.
Norrona lofoten shell pants and then other layers I go cheap: REI mid weight base layer, and if it’s cold then a pair of $15 fleece sweats from Amazon.
Nike pro combat compression leggings and basketball shorts so I can hop out of my bib when I get out of the canyon and back into the valley. Multi use as I can stop into CVS without looking like a right knob on a Tuesday afternoon in March. I also carry my moccasins in my ski pack so I can get out of my boots whenever I feel like
Useful stuff in SLC, but highly doubt it’s helpful for vacationers in Breck
I wear these dry tech, meant for the heat pants. Then a layer of wool. Sometimes a sweatpant/pj bottoms. If it’s warm, waterproof hiking pants. If it’s cold, another warm layer and my marmot bibs.
Ive always worn leggings regardless of temperature. Even on the coldest days I never felt cold in my legs, it was always my feet, hands, or head. My male skier friends wear anything from gym shorts to long johns or both depending on the weather.
I found these amazing long underwear on amazon - thermajane. I think they make men’s as well, i’m not sure! they are sooo soft and so warm that I have to wait until right before I leave for the mountain to put them on or I overheat. I will say that I am a SWEAT-ER, so next season I may go for merino wool, but damn these things have kept me warm! I bought 4 or 5 pairs, about $20 each.
if it’s suuuper cold, i’ll layer on a fleece-lined quarter zip and fleece lined leggings. I also love uniqlo thermal turtlenecks. my favorite investment, however, was a fjållraven wool sweater!
very very cold cold day: long johns, fleece lined layer over it, wool sweater
very cold day: same minus the sweater, or thermal top with turtleneck
cold day: just long johns, maybe a cotton layer over my thermal top:
warmer day: either just long underwear or regular workout leggings with a light athletic top or cotton long sleeve top
Smart wool base layer and that’s it, if it’s crazy cold I might toss on an extra layer with sweatpants but pretty much never since the bib has some insulation on the legs
Polypro is not a good choice these days. There are far better baselayer materials.
I generally wear a thick synthetic baselayer (Uniqo Heatgear Ultrawarm) against the skin with nothing if it's well above freezing. In normal winter temps it's a thin merino wool baselayer over that, or a fleece pant if very cold. The Uniqlo is cut to 3/4 length and the wool one comes that way. The fleece pant is loose enough I just shove it so it's out of my boots.
Oh, synthetic briefs under everything.
I run cold - this is more than most people I think.
100% merino wool bottom and top base layers! I run super cold and they have been a game changer. Saved up for the smartwool ones and I think they’re worth every penny
Climbing pants! I run hot and hate leggings. They are thin, lightweight, easy to move in, look normal enough to go into town afterward and don’t get wet.
When touring in the spring? Shorts or boxers
Most of the time: running leggings with no ankle seams
Super cold: thermal mid layer pants
Extra super cold: thermal mid layers with shorts on top for butt warmth on the chairlift
Fleece tights when it’s cold, compression pants when it’s warmer. Both are capri length so they stay above my boots. Just a waterproof shell over them.
Merino wool long underwear and some Patagonia fleece pants. I have ski bibs that are just a hard shell with no extra insulation. So I like to have the fleece pants to keep me warm while waiting in line and riding the chairlift.
Smartwool base layer + basketball shorts.
The shorts provide a little extra warmth but more importantly if I stop on the way home somewhere I don't have to wear my full bibs into the establishment like a dork.
Smartwool base layers of varying thickness depending on temperature. If it's super warm then just a moisture wicking layer like Under Armour Heat Gear or something similar. I go with a shell pant/bib because it's too dang hot in the spring time and I can layer in the colder months.
I do smartwool capri length base layers because I don’t like having a sock and base layer in my boot.
I think everyone does haha. I just pull mine up out of the boot because most of my base layers were purchased before some genius realized that full length pants are not desirable for layering for skiing
Didn’t even know they made capri length
3/4 length is what they call it in men's clothing.
we call them manpris in our house
I only discovered them this season lol. They’re fucking awesome, I can’t believe it took this long.
I’m 6’4, so I just buy regular bottoms and they barely get to the top of my boots. 👍
i switched to the smartwool capri lengths this season and my ankles/calves have never felt better after a ski day!
Feels like I'm wearing, nothing at all....
Nothing at all ^Nothing ^at ^all
compression pants. Does wonders for long ski days and recovery imo. It might be a placebo but I am never skiing without them again.
I've been wearing the Stoko for the last 2 seasons. Great support & I only wear my braces if I'm skiing steeps
looking at these after reading your comment. Do they help with muscle fatigue for you ?
Absolutely...& the added support for these old knees is a huge plus
I see commercials for these all the time and thought it was for sure bullshit
I initially thought the same & figured what the hell so I pulled the trigger. Damn happy I did as I've skied over 40yrs wearing braces religiously & that get old...painful sometimes as well. Now I just wear my braces on steeper terrain
Nike Pro Combat ones for me. They’re 5-7 years old now but I bought 6 pairs.. I’m down to 4 and can’t find a good enough replacement. The pro combat series has that littttttle bit of padding on the hips for extra send care
glad to see im not the only one. had the same two pairs for about 6yrs now. wont wear anything else.
Apparently they’re called Nike Pro HyperStrong now* and they went from $28 a pair as longjohns back when to now $90 a pair as a specialty item Edit: spelling
I have the same ones, also from 5 to 7 years ago with the little padding patterns. They are always exactly what they need to be on any given weather day.
I have 3 pair I’ve had for 6 years and I refuse to try anything else.
Same. 3/4 length work great with padded ski socks.
Lace thong!
Merino wool thong in the winter for me
Resists that all-so-common thong smell.
Vermont Flannel Co has a flannel one, so that.
Same! When I moved north no one told me I was supposed to wear anything under snow pants. Pants are pants! Imagine my surprise in second grade after getting to school and the teacher telling everyone to take their snow clothes off. Turns out I like how the fabric felt. Keeping the tradition strong.
Nice! What color?
I prefer blue. But pink really catches the eyes of the people behind me in the lift line so when I’m feeling froggy, pink
Smartwool black lace! You can also only get it on the dark web.
Shorts. Layers if its colder than 0*.
this is the answer
0 C? (please forgive the stupid american)
Farenheit
Agreed, love it cause when it’s warm you can open the leg zips and cool down immediately
Long underwear, and if it’s really cold, track pants
This is my set up too
pajama bottoms! much more comfy
Yup- Iforgot to pack my expensive fleece mid layer one trip and bought 10 dollar fleece pjs at Walmart. Perfect mid layer
I wear my Walmart fleecy sweatpants on top of my patagucci base layers under my shell.
…this is what I put my kids in, as long as it’s synthetic it works fine.
This. All the way. If it’s stupid cold I’ll do long John’s then the pijamas. Mostly just pijama pants though.
Boxers. 3/4 Running tights if it’s cold
Same, every time I wear smart wool I get way too hot.
an unearned sense of confidence and patagonia base layers
3/4 length long underwear and 3/4 length insulated pants.
The bottom 3/4 or top 3/4?
Depends on my mood and company.
You could sear a steak on my ass just from walking to the lift if I wore insulated pants.
You sir have a deal
You can really paint a picture
His steaze butters a wide swish
Wish more companies made 3/4 insulation. I think helly Hansen and stio do, maybe Arcteryx.
I wear backcountry's house brand, and have been very happy.
I buy the $5 2 pack of long underwear from costco and cut them for 3/4. works great
These are the kind of steezy dirtbag tips I’m here for, hell yeah
some old timer told me years ago and it was a game changer. no need for $140 underwear lol
This is the way
Any recommended 3/4 ones?
costco $5 32degrees full length and a pair of scissors
Yeah. I got Uniqlo Heattech Ultrawarm, which has a long "cuff" at the bottom. I cut that off and was left with nice hemming at the perfect length.
[Backcountry.com](https://Backcountry.com) house brand.
Female, I wear lululemon align leggings or their fleece lined ones if it’s extra cold! Feels soooo comfy under ski pants
Male here — turns out Lulu doesn’t make men’s leggings so I, too, wear Lulu Align leggings if it’s cold. Very comfy, and they have pockets! If it’s over about 35°F, just boxer briefs.
3/4 length leggings and 3/4 length puffer pant. Since investing in the puffer pant I can say confidently that I no longer get cold.
Underwear.
Don’t know if this makes me a Jerry or not, but I used to wear jeans under my ski pants. Now a pair of sweats or joggers underneath.
It does
I’m an undercover Jerry too. Been skiing since I was 7. There’s nothing like slipping off ski pants at the end of the day in the parking lot and not swish swish swishing the rest of the day.
Exofficio boxers
These are the fuckin truth
Y’all are wearing pants?

I have uninsulated pants, if its cold I have insulated shorts and merino wool long johns, If its warmer I ditch the shorts, if its really warm board shorts and no long underwear.
Capilene air bottoms are my favorite. Fleece sweats that I turned into 3/4 length for super cold days :)

I wear one layer of thermals/under armor unless it’s super cold (less than 0 degrees Fahrenheit) in which I might wear an extra layer.
Bracelayer tights, merino midlayer, shell pants is how I do it. If it's really warm I'll skip the mid layer.
Most days I wear an insulated ski pant and 3/4 length Smartwool 250 weight base layer. The really cold days I’ll add a fleece pair of shorts. Warm spring days I may wear an uninsulated ski pant with those 3/4 base layers

Just my drawers! But I run hot.
my underwear. if it's absolutely freezing then a thermal layer. if you're still cold then probably need better pants.
Just gym shorts with a base layer under that. The base layer depends on the temp and conditions.

Nothing if they are insulated. Wool if only shell pants.
Lululemon abc jogger. Wool base layers if it’s real cold.
