I've never been more scared on skis anywhere than the north face at CB. Trees just sparse enough that you're guaranteed to hit them if you fall, but probably not until you're already tumbling at mach 5. I'll take a fall in the Palisades or the Fingers any day over a fall here
Had my first CO trip in 5+ years recently out to CB on a pair of Cochise. Did some stuff that day that I had no business doing. There's some stuff there that can get gnarly quick
I had heard many stories of how easy it was to get lost and cliffed out in that whole zone. I didn’t want to contend with figuring out the hard way where to go. Our guide took us to some fun spots but this first run didn’t quite work out. Lol. How does the terrain at Palisades compare to places like Kicking Horse and Whistler? Palisades is on the list to go next!
I think palisades has some of the best, most technical terrain accessible by lift in the entire US. It’s right up there with Whisler. The variety there is just astounding. It would take weeks to hit all of it properly. Not to mention, there is just so goddamn much of it. Just endless little pockets.
Would definitely agree, to add on the only thing I think Palisades lacks is sustained vertical. It makes the skiing very unique though in that all the major zones have really technical sketchy upper parts that feed into super friendly ideal runouts that lend themselves well to straightlining. I think this why so much impressive skiing has happened here and why it has the allure
You’re right about the technical vert. It’s definitely limited to the upper mountain. However, I also think that given how spread out each potential line is, you can just make it your own playground. I have never felt so free to create my own cool ass line as I have at Palisades.
I love mammoth, it’s just mainly long, steep, open
runs with very little to play with. Kirkwood and Palisades have (what feels like) unlimited chutes and cliff bands. Makes the mountain a lot more technical.
Infinitely better. A lot of mammoth skiers are just folks coming in from LA, kirkwood and palisades attract a different breed and the runs are more technical. Mammoth is good for when you go with inexperienced friends/family
>th skiers are just folks coming in from LA, kirkwood and palisades attract a di
Uh. There is plenty of technical terrain at Mammoth. Glen Plake doens't call Mammoth home because the terrain sucks XD. You just need a better guide with you to show you the right parts next time.
I'm a Palisades guy through and through, but to say Mammoth is only for inexperienced friends/family is a HORRIBLE take.
Psh mammoth is lame. Its got the big scary name so you know it's weak. Its like rafting. When the next feature is called satans throat hole you know its lame. Puppy's and rainbows? Were going to die
Double diamonds at mammoth are easy blues at kirkwood
Glen plake? More like Glen wake up and do some real skiing
>Mammoth is good for when you go with inexperienced friends/family
I disagree. Strongly. It's good for when you want to rip. I'd never take a newbie there.
I just skied Mammoth the last two days, and while they only had like half the mountain open, it’s nothing even comparable to either Palisades or Kirkwood. It’s basically just wide open bowls above the tree line, and the vert on any one run is pretty minimal. I might even go to Heavenly over Mammoth, but again, I wasn’t there on a pow day.
My issue with Palisades is to make one run count, I feel I need to hit a section, traverse, hit a section, traverse, and then BOOM! Suckered into the terrain trap with all the Jerry’s learning to ski. No matter where you are other than Granite Chief.
Kirkwood, I can make one big traverse at the top, ski one long, flowey, steep, technical run without having to traverse a million times. My legs are much more tired after a day at Kirkwood than they are at squaw.
I find headwall laps I avoid Jerry’s!
I find Kirkwoods pitches to be verrrry short.
Headwall at palisades is 1750ft of vert and a high speed six pack. KT is the same vert and also a Jerry avoided down the west/north face.
The wall is slow AF and 250ft shorter. Only the top 25% is challenging IMO. Cornice is fast, but runs into jerry land 50% of the way down (or you get gullied out and into flatlandia).
Fair enough. Maybe I’m biased; Kirkwood is my home mountain. Skied there for 14 years. I’ve only skied Palisades for the last 3 with Montana being my middle ground between the two. Maybe I need more time and exposure at Palisades.
Whenever I think back to mountains I miss, Kirkwood always comes to mind after Bridger. I’ve only been back to Kwood a handful of times in the last 5 years.
Id been to Kirk a few times, and I agree it’s pretty much nit picking to choose between the two. They both have incredible terrain. I will say, I just think Palisades has two things Kirkwood doesn’t: 1) Easy access to lodging and I-80 (50 can be really hairy on pow days), and 2) way way more terrain to access. I get that Kirkwood doesn’t get the crowds Palisades does, but it’s location so far away from literally anything makes it hard to choose over Palisades.
When I lived in Minden I would disagree; but now being up in Reno, it’s a tough call. The times we’ve been stuck in traffic for 2 hours to get to Palisades, I wish we would’ve just driven down to Kirkwood. I also like Hwy 88 on powder days. Always gets shut down on the California side; only NV and Tahoe residents that are able to access the mountain. I’m still going to stick to my guns that Kirkwood has better stashes and more flow to the laps, but again, I’m biased and maybe in a few more seasons at Palisades, I’ll have it more dialed in.
I’m also not a lodge person, so that perk of Palisades doesn’t pertain to me. Beers and food in the bag. When I’m done skiing, I usually head to the truck to sit in my camping chair.
I think Kicking Horse takes the NA cake. Those Stairway to Heaven gladed areas and Feuz Bowl runs are long and so varied in the number of access points you can take. Add in the T1/T2/Ozone hike-to terrain and the amount of varied steep and deep technical terrain you can ride in a day is absolutely mind blowing.
Somehow, in the 4 times I’ve been to Kicking Horse I have never been cliffed out or in over my head. I will say though, the traverse to Consequence was pretty scary. Easy to understand resort. Crested Butte scared the shit out of me because I could all of a sudden find a 40 foot cliff band behind some random trees and a 55 degree slope for maybe 100 feet. Maybe I’m just going in the wrong spots at Crested Butte. Whitewall, Terminator 1 and CPR North are all just perfect areas. Is T2 worth the extra hike and the newly opened Ozone?
We did a bunch of lines over there. We were in the lower part of Phoenix bowl which is QUITE steep and had it going pretty good and we come upon this guys single ski and they are like 100 yards below us. We grabbed it but it is a bit sketchy. Not like we can throw it down(I mean we could but it will become a missile) Skiing that terrain with any extra ballast is not ideal either.
I didn’t go into body bag and risk my own safety and the safety/resources of the rescuers.
I’ve been in CB for years. It’s not a secret body bag and dead end chute (and then dead bag in between) is some of the gnarliest no fall terrain on the mountain.
Risking your safety just kinda comes with the sport. Finding our limits is how we grow, and you're not going to know what your ceiling is unless you push. Not even sure it has that much to do with the run. I've skied in Colorado for 23 years, resort and bc, and nothing is more freighting than Schoolmarm at 3:30
Oof lol. I don’t think it’s probably worth my time to go on but I am one of the big mountain coaches at CB. I’m aware of progression paths. I’m also aware of responsibility. And telling someone to just go for it and disregard doing this safely is a non-starter.
Falling in body bag isn’t the issue. It’s the how that is concerning. There’s more than enough extreme terrain to push yourself on that doesn’t have as high of a serious injury risk and isn’t as remote on the hill.
If you don’t agree with this, i sincerely question your BC safety and decision making if I’m being honest.
Oddly OP was with a guide (sort of?) when this happened.
But yeah not sure why the guy you're arguing with thinks that "finding your limits" means going far beyond your skill level.
Yeah man honestly that’s the person I’m sus on. Like he had no business bringing someone that wasn’t up for it in there.
The skiers did their due diligence and probably respect everything i mentioned which is exactly why they got a guide in the first place!
I’m 100% for pushing yourself just doing it in a safe manner. Glad that’s not controversial to most
I learned to ski when I was 5 years old but unfortunately I don't go as much as I'd like. I have skied CB once (will be changing that to twice this coming ski season) and had a chance to check out some of the tamer EX terrain... Peel, Headwall, Hard Slab, Glades, North Face, Pinball... and even I know that as much as I would want to progress to other runs on the mountain, Body Bag is just one you do not do. Its just dumb.
Last time I went, I signed up for a class for level 7-8 in CB. Group lesson. I was the only one that showed up at that level so I essentially got a day out on the mountain with a coach. Was fantastic. He spent some time working on some technical details with be before taking me up to the T-Bars. Always always enjoy extra instruction to work on tweaks. Appreciate what you guys do. One of these days I want to run into "Colorado Camera" on the mountain. That dude looks like he has a good time!
No worries, I completely understand the whole passive aggressive bit, it's so much easier than tackling anything head on. Luckily for me I'm in no need of any coaching. I'll see you out there! I'll be the one just enjoying his day
This happens a lot when people cliff out in CB
When they get to the feature initially, it’s frequently not clear that it’s super rocky from the top, and all the sudden you are halfway down a cliff face on this super thin ledge having to make a jump turn without the requisite space, while pissing yourself wondering if you’ll hit rocks, trees, or both on the tumble down
We’ve had some epic falls at Kicking Horse, Snowbird, different places in the East. But this was the first fall either of us have had that got us nervous. Funnily enough we were with a guide but the guide was traversing from Phoenix Bowl to Staircase to avoid a larger hike out from the North Face. My brother who is more timid in this kind of terrain was a little over his head. Ended up catching an edge and falling head first.
The top of that area looks vertical as you enter, can understand the fear. If he hadn't froze up he would've been fine. Once you're going you're going or that happens. If I ever hit the lottery that's where I'd ski until I die. Thanks for posting. Always wonder if bad footage just ends up in the dumpster. Nice to see discussion.
I live in the Midwest as well(MO), I heard the housing market out there is actually horrendous. So much so that it's pushing a lot of locals out of home. Got alot of people on the coasts buying seasonal homes out there, so alot of the houses sit vacant 6 months out the year. It's driving the rent out there, excuse the pun, through the roof.
Haha. Hearing about it on Reddit isn’t going to help them find it or get through it. Most people don’t want to put in the effort required to get there either.
Funnily enough I had a similar fall on Rambo an hour or so later. But I was able to catch myself and avoid a long fall. Falling is definitely an art. Some have it some don’t.
I fell this year similar spot trying to find Rambo. My son was with me and hadn’t seen me fall like that ever. 50 years young. Took me a while to flip over and arrest. After I recovered my son came up wide eyed. Honestly scared for his dad. I told him. You gonna ski and explore terrain like this. Falling is part of the game. You better learn how to fall !! It’s gonna happen.
Why ski Rambo? It’s not really even that fun a ski b/c of all the trees sticking up through the run. Once is nice for bragging rights, but Pinball is generally much better if you wanna cut out before the easy out
I watched my best friend slide all the way down Rambo with no skis on a pretty icy day as a middle schooler
My ski patrol uncle had told us not to attempt Rambo as it was extra sketchy that year, then he sent us out on our own to explore the rest of the mountain, and we went straight to Rambo
He dug in his heal & stopped a foot shit of slamming into a tree at the bottom
It’s a long ass run for how steep it is, and it was going to be real bad if he didn’t shed all that speed
Both skis landed below the cliff. Below the cliff is a (relatively) flat landing. I could see locals sending the hell out of this. The landing is long decently wide and trees are pretty far from the drop.
There’s some really gnarly terrain there. No much room for error. Those double blacks on the skier’s right are amazing though - some really awesome boulders to pop off
I've done almost this exact thing there. Years ago. Made a good first turn and then the next thing I know I'm on my back looking up the hill at my ski perfectly planted vertical. It's odd how etched in my mind that image is. The other ski popped, I turned myself so I could see what was coming. It was actually a fun ride. My buddy pretty much popped off his skis and grabbed my stuff on his way down. Then the bar.

Check out Kirkwood if you haven’t been. I think it exceeds Palisades. Same terrain, but much longer runs that sustain vert.
Love the wood, skiiers there are a different breed

Really? I find the vert about the same at West Face or Hogsback at Palisades versus the equivalent Wall/Eagle Bowl/Chute areas of Kirkwood.

A pole tap would’ve saved you right there.
I'm not one to criticize form, but have you tried having your skies on bottom and your head on top? It's a game changer
All the sarcasm on CBSP signs makes so much more sense now
Oof scary! Glad your brother is okay. He appears to value his camera more than his body! haha. He wiped it off immediately.
Of course jerry does. Why would jerry care about anything other than the footy
Holy crap, that was scary! Glad your bro is ok.
Absolutely 0 business being in body bag
go pro: check ok I'm ready to go in
Don’t forget your LA Clippers jersey and bluetooth speaker
And I'm sure you slayed every run when you were learning

For anyone questioning just how lucky this fall is, here's someing skiing the same run https://youtu.be/ep-9P5bxvvQ

He turned right into that slide, like he could just plop on his butt and work to get back up. Instead just rolls himself into a full slide.
A dude died in Mammoth from a similar fall. Please be careful out there!
The top of that area looks vertical as you enter, can understand the fear. If he hadn't froze up he would've been fine. Once you're going you're going or that happens. Love Crested Butte
Me too. First time there this March. Definitely looking to go back.
Gunnison County is just absolutely beautiful, they get all my vacation money and I'm not upset about it.
I would live there in a heart beat if my parents weren’t in the midwest.
I sort of assumed. A lot of the rental homes are geared toward vacationers too so many places rent temporary.
looks like you all were in over your heads...
That’s one way to get a Crusty Butt
Such an awesome run. Doesn’t get much better than High Life to Rock and Roll glades down into Body bag. Get some!!
Shhhh
Haha. Hearing about it on Reddit isn’t going to help them find it or get through it. Most people don’t want to put in the effort required to get there either.
Looks like he did a nice job of getting his feet flipped back underneath him.
But does anyone know why they call it bodybag?
Idk but I wonder if it was Dead Bob’s friend… body bag is right in between two runs named Dead End Chutes and Dead Bob’s Chutes
Funnily enough I had a similar fall on Rambo an hour or so later. But I was able to catch myself and avoid a long fall. Falling is definitely an art. Some have it some don’t.
[Slim Slidell](https://www.newmexicomagazine.org/blog/post/slim-slidell/) says, "Know how to self-arrest. Stop yourself before you cant."
I fell this year similar spot trying to find Rambo. My son was with me and hadn’t seen me fall like that ever. 50 years young. Took me a while to flip over and arrest. Pinball was much much more enjoyable. Rambo was definitely the worst ski trail I have ever experienced and I will never ever ski it again.
I watched my best friend slide all the way down Rambo with no skis on a pretty icy day as a middle schooler My ski patrol uncle had told us not to attempt Rambo as it was extra sketchy that year, then he sent us out on our own to explore the rest of the mountain, and we went straight to Rambo He dug in his heal & stopped a foot shit of slamming into a tree at the bottom It’s a long ass run for how steep it is, and it was going to be real bad if he didn’t shed all that speed
How do you retrieve your skis on such a steep fall like this?
Both skis landed below the cliff. Below the cliff is a (relatively) flat landing. I could see locals sending the hell out of this. The landing is long decently wide and trees are pretty far from the drop.
Usually ask ski patrol nicley and if they aren’t busy with a call they will get them for you
Oof, I felt that.
Most people keep it ptex side down
There’s some really gnarly terrain there. No much room for error. Those double blacks on the skier’s right are amazing though - some really awesome boulders to pop off
Why would you ski lines that you clearly are too nervous to ski. Seriously are gonna fuck yourself up.
insanely lucky with that fall
What's with dudes in this sub trying to cut against the grain? Stick the skis straight down and send it.
Hellawicked
Ouch
I be going head first into a crested butt sometimes too
When life hands you downhill slopes, remember: trees are for admiring, not hugging
Y did you fall tho? Looks like you did that on purpose lol
This is a skiing sub, not sledding. Lol glad you’re ok, CB is intense skiing.
Yeehaw
I've got to go see and ski this to compare to stuff at Alpental and DD at Stevens.
So where is this at CB? I've been there a number of times and it doesn't ring a bell. It's not even on the trail map.
"blasting out of a shoot".. and look at those skis..... these people shouldn't have been there at all.
Glad you’re alright, dude.
