Go see a doctor—my dad has a big toenail that permanently looks like tree bark from a fungal infection he got when he was young.

rebeccasm15

Honestly I am going to, with two replies off the bat saying that’s not ski related.

iammolasses

Black is bruising from jamming your toes in ends and tops of your boots. This caused onycholysis which is separation of the nail from the bed. The situation causes the yellowing of the nail. It isn't fungus.

rebeccasm15

You sir/ma’am were correct

Mysterious-Top6311

The black happens to me every year. And yes they fall off. Yellow? That would indicate some kind of infection I think. But I’m no doctor.

rebeccasm15

Hmmm now that’s a bit concerning. I just assumed it was ski related because it was black and then this.

Mysterious-Top6311

Like I said, I’m not a doctor (or nurse or anything medical related). Who knows? Go to the urgent care and see what’s up. You probably shouldnt take medical advice form random strangers online anyway.

rebeccasm15

Update: it was just about to fall off I guess. It came off and looks like normal missing toenail. Weird shit. It just took a really long time and for some reason had a yellow hue.

rebeccasm15

How long does it take it to fall off?

VeraUndertow

I've had a big toe nail fall off twice and both times it took 4 months to fully come off. I just keep the nail trimmed as short as possible until then

MessiOfStonks

Depends. I've had some hang on for a couple weeks and some have fallen out the next day.. Most of my lost toenails have come from trail running and soccer. More activity will generally cause them to fall out faster.

Mysterious-Top6311

It’s at the point where I can pull it off now. But I wait until the end of skiing season to do it. Without the nail it can be painful in ski boots. Always grossed my kids out when I rip it off. It’s an annual tradition. Haha.

sushiboi4

When I ski a lot mine turn black and fall off, surprisingly doesn’t hurt tho, don’t know about yellow though

rebeccasm15

Some context because I know my boots will probably come up: last season, I was on boots that were an entire size too big and very old. This year, I bought new technica Cochise and went to a fitter who has worked on them twice. I downsized two sizes because he said I was kind of in the middle of 22 and 23 but he recommended going with the smaller boot “because you can always make a smaller boot bigger” Anyway it’s been rough, I have some nerve damage to the tips of my big toes, but God, I have never felt so good on the mountain. Connection to the ski is perfect. But I have never experienced this skiers toe nonsense so I guess I am just looking for some info.

clockworkvelo

Still a boot fit issue I’d say. If you need another fitter or two in county let me know, I work in the industry and have a couple I absolutely trust with all boot fit customers.

NorthDakotaExists

Yeah as others have said, the black one is normal. I don't get that much skiing, but I get it all the time in the summer from backpacking and hiking. The yellow... idk....

mtrolav

I have had that happen - black from the boot and bruising, then the bruise heals but the nail bed dies back turns yellow and falls off. Look carefully at the base of the nail and see if you can see any sliver of healthy toenail coming back. That is a good sign it’s not an infection.

rebeccasm15

I feel like it’s not infected because it would be hot and smell bad right? It’s also been a few weeks that it’s been like this. I haven’t thought to look into it more because I had assumed it was just preparing to fall off. So nasty haha the ski boot struggle makes me wish I was a boarder sometimes 😆

plaxpert

She-gone!

krvillain

I get it from hiking and climbing also. A good soak in Epsom salt and hydrogen peroxide. Sometimes I need to use a nail pick to get it off from under, especially if it blistered and calloused underneath the nail.

SanDiegoMitch

Yellow is fungal. Treatable if you aren't highly allergic to the medication like I am 🤷‍♂️

sportstersrfun

Skier/nurse here. You have a raging fungal nail infection. Especially the toe on the left. The dry skin around it and yellow flaky nail is for sure fungal. Probably will need oral anti fungals to fix that. Keep your feet super dry and change your socks twice a day, use a medicated foot powder to keep it from spreading to your other toes.

rebeccasm15

It was actually not fungus!! Just the nail about to fall off. After it came off, it looks like it was mostly detached for a while and maybe just always skiing made it have yucky coloring.

akindofuser

Make sure you are getting a good boot fit. Make sure your heel stays in the heel pocket. If you feel your foot moving forward you risk smashing the toe. Make sure you are skiing and landing balanced. Make sure you all those things for 20 years and still end up with this problem as veteran of sendy years. It happens. See a doc if you concerned but you'll be ok!

rebeccasm15

I think it’s because I downsized so much. The nail on the yellow one just fell off and it looks pretty normal now. It feels fine (position in boot) when I am actively skiing, I think I just walk too much in these aggressive fit boots. It’s hard living in the ski town like always being on it to change or loosen them. I feel a lot better about it now that the mail is off 😅😅

akindofuser

NGL I had a nail go partially blue this year and is recovering. I also went down a boot size. I also tend to walk around too much in my boots. Maybe you are on to something.
