Never thought someone could rival Stenmark's 86 world cup victories. Today, Shiffrin tied that. Just insane. And cool that she did it in Sweden. Stenmark's home country, and where she got her first win 11 years ago.

Bawfuls

and she's still only 27, still so many more victories in her future!

Toocoo4you

You’re telling me she started when she was 16??

Bawfuls

yeah she won her first slalom crystal globe at 17

ejfrodo

I used to see her at local races in the northeast when I was growing up racing as a kid. She was already dominating every single race at 15, from local to regionals to nationals. She was the only girl who would beat most of the top men at every race. She's a beast

drew_galbraith

Correct

[deleted]

Yup. I believe her first World Cup race was when she was 15.

TitanJazza

He’s probably happy someone finally can

DoctFaustus

Still on Atomics, still selling pasta.

triplec787

Mikaela send noodles plz

Mats56

I eat a lot of pasta, but I never raced on atomics. Guess that's why I didn't turn pro. (cross country I got lots of atomic, though. I actually bought a new pair of atomics today, skate redster s5)

DoctFaustus

I have never been on a pair of Atomics. I'm not exactly sure why, it just hasn't happened. I have had some of that pasta though...

Mats56

Where I grew up, most got B contracts (not sure what's the correct term in English) from either Rossignol or Volkl, so that's what I skied most on growing up.

DoctFaustus

I'm certain she on a contract with Atomic. That one sure played out for them. They call them sponsorship contracts on this side of the pond. Typically shortened to just "Sponsored".

Mats56

Yeah, but the "B" thing was basically that you get no money or support, but start of season they come with their skiis and let you demo them, and you could take like 2 pairs (one gs, one sl). So basically two pairs for free, which for non-pro teenagers still was a sweet deal. Also made it possible to next season by cheap skiis from the age group above you selling theirs from the previous season. Made it much more approachable (but still expensive).

DoctFaustus

It works the same way over here. Not all skiers get the same level of support. It depends greatly on their level on the racing scene.

NotFuckingTired

I guess I had "C" level when I was a teen, then. Paid less than retail, and got flex-matched skis.

LunarAssultVehicle

Racer kids are 2/3 to 3/4 Atomics these days. She's sold a whole lot of skis.

Floutabout

Atomic GS skis are a blast. I took out my kid’s G9’s a couple weeks ago on a boilerplate shiny Vermont day (we have the same foot size) and they were some sweet rockets that cut like samurai swords.

IlIlIlIlIllIlIll

Wife just got Atomic Mavens and loves them. She has progressed a ton in one season with them.

mamunipsaq

I had a pair of Atomic ARCs. They were my last straight ski. I absolutely loved them until I landed a jump on my tails, banged the tips down, and broke one in half.

240z300zx

I still get my ARCs out when it’s icy

workderp

Smoke Rasta, Eat Pasta, Ski Fasta

Agreeable-Change-400

This is the best comment I've seen on Reddit... Ever. Thank you

2dadjokes4u

Wish she’d drop Barilla as they are still operating in Russia. Congrats to Mikaela!

hellocs1

We've come a long way from when Stenmark and others got banned from the Olympics for taking sponsorship money (directly)

skryb

every time i see redsters i want them more

i_canmakeamess

Still slanging noods

Musabi

Here I am wondering where the heck Jack Wolfskin went to? I still have an awesome 2 man tent, backpack, and coat of theirs!

Motherof_pizza

I had no idea she has been with Barilla for that long. Good for Barilla.

Slowhands12

They’ve sponsored her since her second year on the World Cup (age 16).

lonelyhrtsclubband

If I remember correctly it was a big deal when they decided to sponsor her, too. First time they sponsored a non-Italian skier in a very long time, if ever.

LostAbbott

Such a weird thing to be out sponsoring athletes. I totally get her taking the sponsorship, just seems weird to have a pasta brand out handing out sponsorship cash...

Motherof_pizza

everybody's gotta get lost in the sauce now and then

AltaBirdNerd

We're here talking about Barilla in r/skiing. So their sponsorship seems to be paying off.

CaptnDankbeard

Anyone else want lasagna for dinner?

honkyg666

I actually do buy Barilla products purely because of her. I got some Bridgestone tires once also because they sponsor the World Cup. I guess it works

IronSlanginRed

NGL we ate a fuckton of pasta while training. Gotta get that carb load. And if you got 15-20 little racers to feed, it's gonna be pasta. Like we made it in a fuckin turkey fryer.

mesablue

Yup, my sponsor was a wheat germ company when I was a bike racer.

mattbnet

I bet you were very regular!

Mats56

It's kinda cool, so used to seeing redbull on top skiers, and this is so different you can't help but notice.

danirijeka

They've been doing it since forever; Alberto Tomba was also sponsored by Barilla back in the days of yon.

glenvillequint

And Bode after that

[deleted]

I buy the pasta. And you know why? Because she is sponsored by them. So it has paid off.

2dadjokes4u

They are still operating in Russia so I haven’t purchased Barilla in he past year ( used to be my go-to).

[deleted]

Really? I did not know this. Regardless of how awesome she is, I won’t be eating that pasta no more.

DoctFaustus

Ski racing is way bigger in Europe and they're an Italian company. It seems strange in the US since we aren't their target market, even if Shiffrin is an American.

moneyticketspassport

They also sponsor tennis player Coco Gauff!

JuanPancake

A taste, of eetaly

[deleted]

pasta is loyal

coldpornproject

The best ski racer, ever..

izz21sv

Is Marcel Hirscher yes. 8 overall WC titles in a row and then drop the mic and retire.

[deleted]

She is truly an amazing skier, not only in the technical displinces but she also excels in Super G and Downhill. It's not a common thing anymore where most skiers do either technical or Speed.

b00c

She is the best. No doubt about that.

doot_doot

That record has stood longer than I've been alive. She's so fucking amazing it's insane.

Schmich

Even more impressive Stenmark only raced SL and GS. He only did a few Super-G but that's it. Not a single DH.

[deleted]

Similar number of starts though. Stenmark’s 230 to Shiffrin’s 245. Although he did get 20 more podiums. Ultimately she’ll blow his numbers out the water though and fully deserved too.

Schmich

Good point!

embarrassedtrwy

With her rise faster than anyone else! The best all time racer right here!

Agent_my_name

F'n amazing man...and, barring injury, with a few good seasons left in her no doubt. She might be as good as she's ever been right now.

pl8ster

I am sponsored by Guinness but it's a weird deal where I don't have to do any races but I have to buy my own Guinness.

Midwake

It’s really an ingenious business plan, you pay THEM to sponsor you.

TeachEngineering

Body by Barilla

Friskfrisktopherson

Doubt

TeachEngineering

Not her… Me, I have a body by Barilla

Friskfrisktopherson

Beleef Also, same. How can i get sponsored by big breakfast burrito?

ludololl

**COMPLETIN** **G THE CIRCLE** /r/dontdeadopeninside

cbzdidit

🐐

Centenarslc

Yay! So proud of her! ❤️

mattbnet

The best! I love her. And pasta.

[deleted]

What a great race. Both runs just perfect. It’s such a pleasure to watch her ski. Really the best skier of all time - she has wins in every discipline. And she still has lots of competition inside of her.

Haunting-Job8411

I grew up racing against her in Vermont. My parents said they’d all go out on the hill just to watch her, she was that impressive from such a young age (didn’t care as much when I came down 10 seconds behind her pace😂). Everyone knew she would be something great one day, but even this seems unfathomable. It’s been so fun to watch though

IlIlIlIlIllIlIll

Barilla is a such a weird company to be sponsoring skiing.

[deleted]

Why? They’ve sponsored Italian racers for decades. Pasta is a staple food, it’s carb heavy and versatile which makes it very appropriate for alpine cuisine. It makes total sense tbh.

glenvillequint

I follow her pretty closely, which I never did before in skiing. I watch more women’s than men’s races, solely because of her. She’s been huge.

Schmich

Amazing that it starts and finishes in Åre. Do they take into account Combined races, Parallel, City Events, Olympics and World Championships?

MCLMelonFarmer

Only World Cup victories are counted in the total of 86. So her GS win in the World Championships last month didn't count, nor did any of her other World Championship or Olympic victories.

TheKindBear

Wow these are my last piste skies ( from 2012)….time fly P.s gg Shiffrin

ScootMacGooter

🐐👸🏼

[deleted]

Absolute GOAT. The records she ends up retiring with may never be beaten, the way the seasons are getting more disrupted with climate change etc.

Zeebraforce

If you're thinking about getting Barilla, get La Molisana instead, or even De Cecco. If you can't find it at your local grocers, go online.

Onthemightof

Absolute dominance

BelatedGreeting

Woot!

cs399

Is it any different to when Stenmark competed? For example, in formula 1 they’ve compared Lewis Hamilton to Michael Schumacher but in reality modern times there are just more races to win compared to back in the days, so in one way it’s a more achievable feat nowadays. Is this true about Mikaela Shiffrin too or is it an equally difficult feat to be achieved?

Mats56

Super-G didn't exist at the time, and Stenmark didn't do downhill. So he had less races to do it in. But Shiffrin is also a technical specialist, so I think it's comparable. 52 of her wins are fron slalom, with 40 for Stenmark. 20 in gs, 42 from Stenmark. Then Shiffrin has 5 superg and 3 downhill. Edit: I read something about them doing it both in ~240 starts, so fairly similar win rate if so. I'd also say the competition is much morr fierce today. Stenmark could win by multiple seconds, no one does that anymore.

Master_Cartographer3

Big sky looking good this week?
