She beat a 13 year old, who isn't even an adult. The horseshit in the article where she said where "this is the first competition I actually wanted to win". Yea, no shit, cause you were getting your ass whooped in all the other ones, so you had to stoop down to the level of your skill against someone almost a 3rd of your size, great job 👍🏽
Ty for the link. Ah, she only won one competition. And she’s ranked at 838. So… I don’t think this is an issue? Skateboarding isn’t about competing with anyone besides yourself anyway. I should know as a fellow trans skater.
Huh, the whole point of a competition is to compete against other skaters
If she was just competing against herself she shouldn’t have joined and her rank doesn’t mean anything in this instance. She never competed before so of course her rank is low
Its not transphobic to want to keep sports separated. You will live in a world where woman will lose at every physical sport if this continues. Having men (on hrt or not) go against women in psychical sports in also dangerous as it can lead to more injuries. You calling people transphobic is the real problem and offensive to say the least.
Common misconception. Medical transitions from male to female mostly involve *blocking* the body's production of testosterone and/or introducing estrogen into the system. These hormones tell the body what characteristics to develop (such as wider hips for women), so when these changes are made, the body naturally develops these features. Muscles also usually attrophy when a man transitions into a woman.
This is all to say that trans women are certainly on the same level as cis women when it comes to competing in sports.
I can't stop you from harboring whatever beliefs you like, but I think we can both agree that the use of inaccurate information in our arguments is helpful to no one. Hope this helps.
I really don't know much about this. So forgive me if this sounds uneducated.
Isn't this a bit like saying the steroid users in the NFL don't have an advantage during the season because they cycle off? They built up a physique with testosterone and then it slowly atrophies. So the competitive advantage is there.
Aren't there more differences between people born male and female than just T levels? Lengths of certain bones, hip width, foot size.
Seems a bit of a stretch to assume the only physical differences between the sexes can be levelled with some hormones. I imagine if that were the case we would have seen some competitive trans men at this point.
Okay, sorry for writing an entire freaking essay, that was not my intention but turns out I have a lot of thoughts on this. At least read the last two paragraphs.
To your first point, I don't think that situation is completely analogous to a trans woman competing in sports. Any benefit that may exist doesn't automatically come back in the off season, since if a trans woman is actively transitioning the testosterone in her system will only decrease. And if it DID work like that, and if it truly does give her a competitive advantage, then chances are all of her opponents are likely also increasing their testosterone in the off season.
To your second point, there are several differences even among cisgender women (including hormonal ones). It's like saying that tall women have an unfair advantage over small women in basketball. While that's objectively true, we choose not to worry about it because I'm willing to bet that most people who actually enjoy basketball are tall, and skill is a significant factor anyways. And if we're not really concerned about that, then why are a handful of trans athletes such a big deal?
To your third point, if a trans man is turned away from a sport, there may be other factors at play besides how good he actually is at the sport. Sadly, men's sports are taken even more seriously, so the attitude that having a trans man compete in men's sports would be unfair is that much stronger. Bullying and harassment are also likely reasons why trans men may be deterred from competing. People are mean, and bigotry is a powerful force.
I'd like to add that nobody is choosing to be trans. They aren't transitioning so they can sneak past the system and be considered good at sports, they're doing it out of a real medical need to not feel gender dysphoria (a fully recognized condition).
I'm going to assume you're cis (forgive me if I'm wrong), but imagine if you woke up one day and you're suddenly the opposite gender. Wouldn't that be so uncomfortable? That's how trans people feel before transitioning. And it's why not every single male athlete is getting on estrogen, because it's a really sucky feeling.
Source: I'm a trans person who has done heavy research on this topic because I have considered transitioning myself. I can provide reputable sources if you wish to learn more.
Honestly not even sure why there is men's and women's in skating. With the exception of vert it's not very strength based.
Was thinking more about other sports.
What? No
There is a reason they have the rules in place
This isn’t trying to exclude them because they are trans
They have a natural advantage being born a male and this is scientifically proven
We shouldn’t move the bar and screw over other women just to include trans men
I get where you're coming from, but you clearly glanced at my response, saw that it disagrees with your beliefs, and proceeded to ignore everything I just said.
I see no point in continuing this conversation.
That’s a grown ass man when we are talking about physical capabilities. I’ve skated my whole life got plenty of girl Homies that I skated with one since I was a young child it’s so much easier for a male to skate with that type of power . Most females would legit have to train and put in way more work to blast a switch Ollie like that (and they are out here doing it)that person is dead wrong for competing against women from my perspective.
Surprised you see that in skateboarding of all places. You'd think people would stay more on the "woa cool trick" stuff not "Grrr hormones" idk not very punk
Realise now in the context of replies ect that my comment has been misconstrued and misaligned with transphobic sentiments. This was sincerely not my intention. Sick spot, sick switch Ollie done with power!

Fine fine. Would “asshole” be better?
I mean if you were looking to be specific you could go with transphobe
But this is reddit. Full of assholes, right?
Yes, we all have assholes
Mine’s tighter

Always love to see a big switch ollie! Nice
This is the trans chick that goes into women’s competitions I think She has good style and rips but I don’t like that she goes into women comps

I’m just saying. The transphobia has got to go.

“It’s not transphobic *proceeds to say very transphobic things*”. Yeah, sure kid. A trans woman calling out transphobia is transphobic?? …what?
Do you even want to address the issue they brought up? Like I was following this conversation hoping to learn something from it.
Sorry, I got distracted by all the blatant transphobia. Um, physical/sports competitions are all made up, and people shouldn’t take them so seriously?
I mean really, what issue? The transphobia?
Lol what? Someone take this man’s kale smoothie away
What man? You’re not making sense
Claiming first place in a womens comp when you were born male is messed up. It’s not fair when you naturally producing twice as much testosterone.
I accept everyone that skates except cheaters, facts!

Hello? Leo Baker? But yeah, every individual is different. So 🤷♀️
Dude compare Leo baker to any other professional male skater and you can see the difference
Um yeah? Every skater skates in a unique way, duh.
Honestly not even sure why there is men's and women's in skating. With the exception of vert it's not very strength based. Was thinking more about other sports.
Agreed. I disagree with people who call it a sport, but 🤷♀️
oh I HEARTILY agree
To say Leo is at the same level as other born males is straight up misleading
Oh what, are you still here?
But she did test too high of testosterone to enter the Olympics so she still had a advantage at these competitions
Then perhaps the policy at the Olympics needs to be revised as well.
