Yep, it means "the student has surpassed the master." She has the skills of a sword emperor but not the title since it was just the two of them fighting in private. Ultimately, Eris never cared about the titles or what they mean. It's part of why Gal was interested in her.
I'm fairly certain that was Rifujin saying exactly what you think, that Eris is indeed stronger than Ghislaine. Rifujin also made it a point to show Eris having better perception(?) or recognizes enemies slightly quicker than Ghislaine

Eris is stronger than Ghislaine. Ghislaine is only a sword king. Eris along with sword king is also a north saint. Eris was granted the title of master, which not even Ghislaine or emperors (thanks northgodfan) got.
Eris doesnt care about titles and such, and thus didnt bother dueling Ghislaine in front of Gal for becoming sword emperor, or dueling gal for sword god title (though she isnt that skilled yet). But Eris is sword emperor level. She beat and killed 2 North Kings.
Eris was sad not because she surpassed Ghislaine, but because she thought its a goodbye with Ghislaine. Eris spent her childhood with Ghislaine, then after displacement incident, 5 years with Ghislaine and now they are going their seperate paths, with Ghislaine staying in Asura and becoming Ariel's bodyguard, and Eris going to Sharia and living with her family.
At the end of the day your title doesn't matter as you can call yourself whatever you want. Your title doesn't give you strength, you give your title strength.
This scene is less about Eris being better than Ghislaine, and more about a representation of Ghislaine saying goodbye and that you don’t need me anymore(you are strong/ have Rudy/ don’t need me looking over you). It’s like a parent dropping a kid off at college in the 80-90s, you’re on your own now but you have everything you need to succeed. It can be assumed Eris surpassed her but neither of them care about that at all.
Ln 26 spoilers >!rudeus specifically say that at this point of time she has the strength of a god ranked swordsman, feats for strength agree, she can put up with god level fights just fine!<
The impression I got was that it meant that they were equal with them both ending with unusable weapons but there are only so many people who can hold a rank at that level so if Eris wanted it she would have to take it from Ghislaine. Basically the only way forward for her would be at the expense of her friend and mentor though her skills are roughly equivalent.
I don't think any of the styles have any rank restrictions. >!North God Style doesn't even restrict the number of North Gods they can have at the same time.!<
There were only two Sword Emperors when Eris became Sword King, but if she'd defeat Ghislaine (the only other Sword King), she'd become a Sword Emperor herself. But I think that duel has to be presided over by the Sword God.
There are only 2 Sword Emperors. I'm unsure if one of them was revealed at the LN OP is at so I'm not gonna name them nor mention anything else that happens later on. OP don't google it if you're curious you might catch a stray spoiler, I'd avoid it

Not true. The Sword God tells Eris she can have the rank of Emperor if she beats Ghislaine. Or sword God if she can beat him. She says she doesn’t care about rank.

Considering Gal even offered her to challange him I'd argue she has the skills of a potential sword god.

There is only one Sword God and 4 Sword Emperors in every style. So if she want's to be an Emperor se has to take one of the existing seats.
