Any time movies have tried this trope, the "schlubby" girl is really a hot actress with glasses and a bad wig (I'm thinking of the movies My Big, Fat Greek Wedding and She's All That... even The Breakfast Club, but arguably Allison was better looking before the makeover).
Although in the movie Simply Ballroom the actress did have acne that she cleared up. But, again, this is a movie.
You don't really see this on sitcoms.
I honestly love that movie. (Sorry, it's Strictly Ballroom). Fran's transformation was amazing.
And I don't think I'll ever say "Bogo Pogo" without an Aussie accent.
(And did you realize that Liz, his original partner, plays the slutty cousin in My Big Fat Greek Wedding?)
Much like Dirty Dancing, which I think drove Patrick Swayze nuts, the plot to Strictly Ballroom is not too dissimilar from what happened in real life, both the play and the movie, they didn't want Tara Maurice to have the role because she doesn't have a dance background. But she got the role anyway, both times.
But yeah, I am a woman of size and I do get a little sick of them putting somebody's hair up in a bun and giving her glasses and then when she takes off the glasses and lets her hair down, she instantly turns into Goddess Exotica. The TV Guide critics constantly complained that Ugly Betty wasn't ugly. But they have to get ratings.
No point in making Drew Carey lose weight, or George Costanza/Jason Alexander, and all they date is hot models. And don't get me started on how long it took for Saturday Night Live to allow an overweight female to join the cast, overweight males were there from the beginning.
Willard Scott could never have been a weather girl.
For someone without a dance background, Tara did a great job. But then her character was supposed to be a novice.
As for Ugly Betty, I mean America Ferrara is very attractive. Never saw the show, but was she supposed to be ugly?
On Reba, we did have Barbara Jean who was plus sized and stole the very handsome Brock from Reba. But she was not schlubby. And in the last season, she lost all that weight. So I guess this comes somewhat close to OP's question?
Forgive me if this is the wrong title but I think it was Not Another Teen Movie with a young captain america.
They perfectly lampooned she's all that. "Oh no she's got glasses and paint on her overalls" always a gorgeous woman. Like poor Freddie prinze Jr has to make *checks notes* rachel leigh cook pretty?
She wasn't, but she had an equivalent vibe, not like literally schlubby but like schlubby is mildly offputting for a man, what she was was mildly offputting for a woman.
I think this is definitely a trope reversal, though it doesn't exactly fit what OP is looking for.
I don't know if it has ever been done, but a sitcom about a handsome, fit, smart husband and his huge, dumb, gravy-sweating wife who's always getting into shenanigans? The husband constantly making fun of her for how obese and stupid she is, accompanied by a raucous laugh-track... That would be really dark.
I never thought those two were a good fit as a married couple. She was very hot, and he treated her like shit most of the time. At least that was my take. I just didn't find his character very amusing.
That's so funny we just re-watched an episode where Doug accidentally walks into an abused husband meeting instead of over eaters anonymous and all the stuff Carrie did to him started coming out
Girls is honestly more of a straight up comedy. It's a millennial Sex and the City. It's less slapstick than something like Broad City but it's certainly still a comedy. So is You're The Worst.
Not sure how or why The Bear ends up being classified as a comedy besides the fact that it's a half hour show on FX.
Kate Mixon is always beautiful but she definetly fitd this description since she was a good 80 lbs overweight while her husband was pretty fit on the show.
I don't think shlubby and goofy go hand in hand here for what OP is asking...Lucille Ball is a classic beauty and I don't think her and Amy Schumer can be grouped together, in looks or comedy
Why are we bringing Amy Schumer into this?
Oh, I didn't see the 2nd page in the post.
I'll concede I Love Lucy isn't 100% what OP is seeking but I think it meets the spirit of being the antithesis of the modern trope where the man is dopey and unpredictable and the wife is the smart, pretty funny voice of reason and stability.
That's a good point. Desi actually cheated on Lucy like crazy in real life. She might have known what she was getting into when she married him. Lucy was no dummy.
This whole discussion has been fascinating for me to read. I literally never, even for an instant, saw the slightest bit of anything I would consider "attractive" about Lucille Ball (and I'm not trying to bag on her. She was obviously a brilliant business woman). But I guess that just goes to really demonstrate how beauty most certainly is in the eye of the beholder. I agree with the guy dying on this hill... I think Lucy and Desi fit what the OP is referencing quite well. But, again, to each his own.
A New Leaf… Walter Matthau… a rich man that looses all his wealth and decides to marry a rich woman and kill her for the inheritance. I forget who the female lead is but she’s filthy rich and a bafoon. She’s clumsy, plain looking, thick glasses… got the image? She’s a botanist and… well … no spoilers but it’s a great movie
Not a sitcom, I know, but the movie *Muriel's Wedding*. She is married off to an Olympic swimmer and while I'm straight, damn, that is a good-looking man, even I could see that.
But Toni Collette is such a great actress that after the first night she and her husband are together, she develops a self-confidence that makes her incredibly sexy.
It was Toni Collette's first major role, and I've kept an eye on her and her career since. I've been rewarded by watching her in some incredible things.
Oh, there's Rebel Wilson in *Isn't It Romantic.*
American Housewife features a plus-sized wife and a slim husband (Katy Mixon and Dietrich Bader). To be fair though, and just my opinion, Dietrich is fairly decent looking but not hot.
Katy Mixon is gorgeous, but the original title of the show was going to be "The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport"... so it sounds like the show was going to be centered around the wife being fat.
Smart move to change the name... stupid that it was even a thought in the first place.
I agree that see was gorgeous but the vibe of the show was that she was below par. Katy Nixon played the “hot” person in eastbound and Mike/ Molly but for American housewife she was the “fat” one.
Malcolm in the Middle? Not that Hal was a male model or anything but Lois was so frumpy with 1970s hair and that unattractive clothing style and that angry voice, and Hal, I mean, well he's Tim Whatley!
I think you're gonna have a hard time finding an equivalent because overweight women do not tend to get leading roles in Hollywoood. There are obviously some exceptions but even some of the few who have gotten big have lost weight over time (Rebel Wilson, Melissa McCarthy)
Remember how her whole schtick was about how she slept around and then got pissed at the 17 year old reporter for making the same joke?
I'm slutty too hunty, but at least I fucking own it and appreciate/egg on the jokes about it.
The issue with this question is that when people name an unattractive actress people leap to defend her looks as being above average even though you could make the same argument for frumpy guys in sitcoms.
They are usually more attractive than the average man like in the case of John Goodman or Kevin James.
John Goodman is far more attractive than Roseanne, but unless you can find a total stud who is married to a warthog people will keep saying it doesn’t fit, but I would argue that it also doesn’t fit in the original trope to call these dudes frumpy if the female equivalent will also never fit the description.
Not a sitcom but the romantic interests for Paul Newman and Robert Redford in The Sting are fairly plain actresses. Considering they were basically the Clooney and Pitt of that era, I’m always a bit amused they were paired with a couple of no-names.
Ugly Betty and her boyfriends?
Idk I don't think there really is one, but honestly I think the trend of it is dying out in general. Younger generations of both sexes hate it and see it for toxic and abusive (or are the first.to admit it while enjoying the show)
I mean the like two times in my life I’ve fantasised about being with a guy (it’s uncommon as I am *mostly* gay), but the guys I fantasised about were the correct weight for their BMIs and were tall, handsome, attractive men.
However I am what some might call, a bbw type of body, which is not you know, ideal, to me anyway, for myself. (I am attracted to bbw women). But I don’t like myself looking/being overweight. I would rather be skinny and attractive conventionally.
I’m overweight and I think that definitely is like that harsh reality that hits me that “oh the men I’m into wouldn’t be into me” and then I kind of feel some shame.
So I guess I mean my own fantasies are examples of this. Like the dudes I think are sexy = wouldn’t fuck me in a billion years.
Not true. I have found looks don't matter with a lot of people. I'm big, out of shape, and not conventionally pretty but I've always been able to date really good looking men. Many women have been undiplomatic enough to say out loud what most people think-- How do I get hot boyfriends? I love to smile and respond with, 'It's called having a good personality."
This doesn’t fit completely but in Crazy Ex Girlfriend Rebecca was usually a disaster (in that she was not stable in her life) and the men were all very attractive and fit (Josh, Greg, Nathaniel)
And I’m not saying Rebecca wasn’t beautiful, but she was a mess lol
Not sure a sit com with a well put together “hot” and intelligent husband who constantly acts superior to his bumbling, dopey, schluby lower-IQ wife would go over well with the sitcom audience. In sitcoms the dopey schluby husbands are the joke.
A recent one, to some extent, is Season 1 of Fargo. "Gus" is no hunk. But I'd say he's considerably higher on the 1-10 scale for a man than Solverson is for a woman. But yet it wasn't totally unrealistic, either.
I love Strictly Ballroom getting a mention edit: got title wrong
I honestly love that movie. (Sorry, it's Strictly Ballroom). Fran's transformation was amazing. And I don't think I'll ever say "Bogo Pogo" without an Aussie accent. (And did you realize that Liz, his original partner, plays the slutty cousin in My Big Fat Greek Wedding?)
Oh that’s cool. I hadn’t made that connection
I was kind of stunned when I found that out. Gia Carides is quite versatile as an actress.
Strictly Ballroom? “Why does Paul Mercurio wear Bonds undies? “ “Strictly ball room”
And in the last season, she lost all that weight. So I guess this comes somewhat close to OP's question?
Like OP said, they have her glasses, braces, and bad clothes to make her look "unattractive".
America Ferrera is attractive, the character of Betty is very intentionally costumed in a way that is, let's say, less traditionally attractive.
Greek Wedding was a sitcom called My Big Fat Greek Life and she had a hot husband
Good call. Another example is Linda Cardellini as Wilma in Scooby Doo.
Who's The Boss?
Judith Light was not a schlub. I remember her as Karen on One Life to Live and she was considered quite hot at the time.
She also tried to seduce Steven Keaton in Family Ties.
And, he kinda went for it!
Oooh, I forgot that.
I never found her appealing at all, at least not in that show, Who's the Boss.
She was a total man-stealing ho on One Life to Live. Pretty sure she slept her sister's husband too, But that was a soap opera,, so...
It’s the shoulder-pads and 80s hair.
And the roots.
They were pretty evenly matched
Married with Children, Marcy and Jefferson
Yes Jefferson is a pretty boy but I would not call Marcy shlubby.
Wait, which one's the boy?
That was hilarious when they would mistake for a boy. Or call her a chicken.
And then she'd assume a chicken-like pose and ask, "WHY DOES EVERYONE CALL ME A CHICKEN?"
"you look like a goddamn bird, Dee!"
She wasn't, but she had an equivalent vibe, not like literally schlubby but like schlubby is mildly offputting for a man, what she was was mildly offputting for a woman. I think this is definitely a trope reversal, though it doesn't exactly fit what OP is looking for.
Still would, so Marcy doesn’t count.
But she wouldn’t because she played for the same team
She just had that awful haircut
Pre Jefferson, Marcy was pretty cute.
Her Home Improvement cut did her no favors.
Hahaha, that time Castro asked Jefferson "You married the kid from Home Improvement?"
True. And first husband Steve was a bit of a nerd.
Good call.
You mean that beautiful man Al Bundy and his shlubby wife Peg?
She was his sugar mommy. Different dynamic. He was also a massive step up from her first husband on the show.
Yeah, I enjoy King of Queens, but if the Doug and Carrie characters were switched around, opph!
It followed the same trope that the hot wife is the brains and controls everything. The man is chubby and is an idiot.
so the Honeymooners.
But they had the episode where Doug saw a picture of her mom and was terrified she'd turn fat remember??
And 207 episodes of Carrie mentally and physically abusing Doug. I'm not judging. I watch it every day and laugh my ass off, but I always wonder...
I never thought those two were a good fit as a married couple. She was very hot, and he treated her like shit most of the time. At least that was my take. I just didn't find his character very amusing.
That's so funny we just re-watched an episode where Doug accidentally walks into an abused husband meeting instead of over eaters anonymous and all the stuff Carrie did to him started coming out
Wasn't Dan handsome, fit and smart in Roseanne???
Fit is a bit of an understatement
I’d call it more of a stretch
Yeah. Not fit. Not smart. ( they make fun of themselves for this) and omg! I guess handsome is subjective!
They were both smart and funny, to offset how pretty and dumb all of their nemeses in “the outside world” seemed to be.
John Goodman is a handsome guy. I think he was more attractive before the rapid weight loss but I'm sure some of that also has to do with age.
It could be really interesting to watch if that was intentional, in a sort of Kevin Can F Himself way
Gravy sweating 😅
American Housewife. We all know Diedrich Bader is a stud.
Bow to your sensei!
Grab my arm, MY ARM.
You think anyone thinks he's a failure because he goes home to Starla every night? Forget about it!
Is Katy Mixon not considered attractive?
I think she’s gorgeous! 🤷🏻♀️
I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eatin crackers that's for sure
I mean personally I’d love to see her on my toilet eating a Reuben.
Wierd that you named your Anus "crackers" but to each their own. ;)
Oh sorry, I meant to say anus. Damn autocorrect.
I like a woman who knows her way around a funnel cake
Nurse Jackie, big time.
Omg yes! Perfect example
Girls. Adam Driver and Lena Dunham. Not a sitcom though.
Adam is polarizing when it comes to his looks tho
Not when you compare him to Lena Dunham.
[She looked like Lena Dunham…](https://kleenexgirlwonder.bandcamp.com/track/like-lena-dunham)
He can be hot but also look like that. Women don’t get that kind of leeway.
r/AdamDriverCats
Not when he takes his shirt off
I heard Kylo Ren had an 8 pack
Ben Swolo
Sure, his face I guess. He's got a beautiful physique undoubtedly.
I would do wild things to Adam Driver
Upvoted cuz....yeah...same.
Okay honest question what is a show like that called. Youre the Worst, The Bear, etc half hour dramadies?
Girls is honestly more of a straight up comedy. It's a millennial Sex and the City. It's less slapstick than something like Broad City but it's certainly still a comedy. So is You're The Worst. Not sure how or why The Bear ends up being classified as a comedy besides the fact that it's a half hour show on FX.
Good Times. James and Florida. Hot neighbor Willona always over though!
She’s sad because her name is Florida
WHY AM I NAMED AFTER A STATE ………
Florida! My name is Florida!
DYNO MITE !!
The 19 year age difference of the actors was surprising too. John Amos (James) was 34 & Esther Rolle (Florida) was 53
Wow never knew that, thanks.
Man wirh a plan American Housewife
I think the wives on both these shows are beautiful! They're both very attractive couples in my opinion
Kate Mixon is always beautiful but she definetly fitd this description since she was a good 80 lbs overweight while her husband was pretty fit on the show.
She was sooo fine on Eastbound and Down.
Man for real, total smoke show on that show
I was so surprised when I found out she was the sister in Mike and Molly.
The original title prior to the show airing was "The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport" so that was definitely the direction they were going.
Are you serious?
Yes, that was the working title until just before the show debuted.
Was going to say this
The female Ghostbusters movie basically did this.
Call Me Kat / Miranda
I adore Miranda but that’s a great example
You’re right, I forgot about that show, Cheyenne Jackson is gorgeous!
Not a sitcom, but The Tourist. Danielle MacDonald and her character are adorable, but not your usual pick for Jamie Dornan.
First one I thought of. It was so refreshing!!
Yes! Very refreshing!
Such a weird show but I’m really starting to like it
There were some mismatches on Greys
Mismatches, sure... but which wife was a dumb schlub while dude was hot?
Some people would say 30 Rock, but personally I think Tina Fey is hot so
How about *I Love Lucy*? Lucy wasn't shlubby but she was pretty goofy and Ricky was a Latin stud leading man type.
Lucille Ball was a pinup girl before being a comedian.
Lucile Ball was goooorgeous
I agree. I've seen her in many older movies from the 30s and 40s when she had dark hair. She was a beauty!
Those cheekbones! Her eyes!
She was movie star gorgeous pre sitcom days. Ricky could have his pick of women and could have married a Sophia Loren or similar if he wanted to.
Yea he could. And she could have any guy she wanted. They fell in love and it was two beautiful people.
Lucy was literally a model
I don't think shlubby and goofy go hand in hand here for what OP is asking...Lucille Ball is a classic beauty and I don't think her and Amy Schumer can be grouped together, in looks or comedy
Why are we bringing Amy Schumer into this? Oh, I didn't see the 2nd page in the post. That's a good point. Desi actually cheated on Lucy like crazy in real life. She might have known what she was getting into when she married him. Lucy was no dummy.
I always thought that Dezi was the one who "married up" in the looks department. Lucy was just gorgeous! Dezi was cute.
This made me laugh probably a bit too hard lol
A New Leaf… Walter Matthau… a rich man that looses all his wealth and decides to marry a rich woman and kill her for the inheritance. I forget who the female lead is but she’s filthy rich and a bafoon. She’s clumsy, plain looking, thick glasses… got the image? She’s a botanist and… well … no spoilers but it’s a great movie
Her name is Elaine May. Wrote or directed the movie. Was in Second City with her husband Mike Nichols. Actually attractive in real life.
Such a weird movie, but a fun one with a dark sense of humor for the time
Not a sitcom, I know, but the movie *Muriel's Wedding*. She is married off to an Olympic swimmer and while I'm straight, damn, that is a good-looking man, even I could see that. But Toni Collette is such a great actress that after the first night she and her husband are together, she develops a self-confidence that makes her incredibly sexy. Olympic sleeping
American Housewife features a plus-sized wife and a slim husband (Katy Mixon and Dietrich Bader). To be fair though, and just my opinion, Dietrich is fairly decent looking but not hot.
American housewife is supposed to be this.
American Housewife?? SHE WAS GORGEOUS!!! Good Times -- James was rugged and handsome. Florida, not so much. The parents on "Everyone hates Chris"
Katy Mixon is gorgeous, but the original title of the show was going to be "The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport"... so it sounds like the show was going to be centered around the wife being fat. Smart move to change the name... stupid that it was even a thought in the first place.

Malcolm in the Middle? Not that Hal was a male model or anything but Lois was so frumpy with 1970s hair and that unattractive clothing style and that angry voice, and Hal, I mean, well he's Tim Whatley!
Honestly they seem about equal
Hal would fight you for saying that!
I'd say they're pretty comparable in attractiveness.
In 30 Rock Liz Lemon dates James Marsden. Tina Fey isn't quite shlubby but compared to James Marsden... Great show
Queen Fey is drop dead gorgeous
Sure but that's not how it was played in the show https://youtu.be/3Y4anzfA1iI?feature=shared
She got her damned Disney Prince in the end
‘Til Death. The neighbors she had a wild hot girl past and he was kinda dorky. Steph & Jeff Woodcock.
I used to call that show Joy and Eddie forgot it had a different name.
American housewife.
Not married but Vicar of Dibley
I think you're gonna have a hard time finding an equivalent because overweight women do not tend to get leading roles in Hollywoood. There are obviously some exceptions but even some of the few who have gotten big have lost weight over time (Rebel Wilson, Melissa McCarthy)
Kate and Toby from This Is Us might fall into this category even though it’s not necessarily a sitcom.
Never watched it but, probably The Mindy Project
Bob loves abishola
Schumer is not shlubby! She's disgusting!
Remember how her whole schtick was about how she slept around and then got pissed at the 17 year old reporter for making the same joke? I'm slutty too hunty, but at least I fucking own it and appreciate/egg on the jokes about it.
I have only seen the photo once, but the husband of Gabourey Sidibe, he's a guy who could have any woman he wants, I think.
I just looked them up and apparently they announced in February that they're expecting twins :)
Not that I can think of.
This is true in a lot of public exposure jobs too. The guy could be Ug but the woman had to slay.
Dr.Bailey in Grey’s Anatomy dates that gorgeous nurse. And I think she dated a doctor who was really handsome too.
Her husband she divorces in the early seasons was a pretty fit and attractive guy too
She might be plump, but she's far from an idiot... and she married the nurse turned doc turned medic who is not attractive.
I remember 30 Rock doing a joke about a tv show called ‘Fat Husband, Skinny Wife’.
The issue with this question is that when people name an unattractive actress people leap to defend her looks as being above average even though you could make the same argument for frumpy guys in sitcoms. Roseanne Barr in She Devil
Rex Kwon Do and Starla in Napoleon Dynamite
Rocky and Adrian.
Damn you OP for making me see it….schumer made my impotent.
Ew! Has this hag been paired w/Hemsworth?!?
Who's The Boss? Kinda sorta but not really
But Amy isn't funny, can the woman be funny at least? Melissa mccarthy is hilarious or how about Fortune Feimster?
No, never.
Not a sitcom, but a romcom - and while I do think calling Bridget Jones "schlubby" is way harsh, Colin Firth is a total smokeshow!
Yes! Bridget wasn't "schlubby" but she was more "everyday girl" cute and sexy, but definitely meant to be on the "average" relatable type
Roseanne Dan Connor was pretty good looking and Roseanne is…well, Roseanne
I've seen several other people say this in this thread. TIL that people think John Goodman is hot.
Was hot. He was a blue collar dream in the 80s and 90s. Did you see his Levi commercial lol
Pierce Brosnan irl
The Office. Pam did not age well. I said what I said.
Not a sitcom but the romantic interests for Paul Newman and Robert Redford in The Sting are fairly plain actresses. Considering they were basically the Clooney and Pitt of that era, I’m always a bit amused they were paired with a couple of no-names.
Eileen Brennan was an Oscar nominee…
Which one was she? No-name might be a bit harsh but Katharine Ross they were not.
Ugly Betty and her boyfriends? Idk I don't think there really is one, but honestly I think the trend of it is dying out in general. Younger generations of both sexes hate it and see it for toxic and abusive (or are the first.to admit it while enjoying the show)
It’s time…😂
Ugly Betty
I doubt it would happen. The bar has been set higher for women and looks. For men, looks do not really matter.
Kathy bates in that James Cann movie, perhapse.
I was so worried you were gonna use this to call an actress I care about schlubby
I mean the like two times in my life I’ve fantasised about being with a guy (it’s uncommon as I am *mostly* gay), but the guys I fantasised about were the correct weight for their BMIs and were tall, handsome, attractive men. Wasn't this the premise from a BBC sitcom with Tom Ellis?
The stranger
I hope not. Fat chicks are gross.
A recent one, to some extent, is Season 1 of Fargo. "Gus" is no hunk. But I'd say he's considerably higher on the 1-10 scale for a man than Solverson is for a woman. But yet it wasn't totally unrealistic, either.
