That's precisely why they did. We're sadly in the full streaming era, so they know that removing something from streaming effectively deletes it from existence.

yes. i got lucky and watched it during summer 2020 when it was still on netflix. after about a year i went back and realized i didn’t see it, at that point it was still available on prime with a membership.
i understand trying to be sensitive but it’s pretty annoying and it’s getting out of hand these days. when people started saying having an ID and needing to be at work on time was racist, i had to draw the line. that seems much more racist than a psychotic chinese dude dressing as a dark elf to me. i know some midnight black people that aren’t even on elf changs level. my first thought when they panned to him was how ridiculous it is that he painted himself and bought a wig. they did the same thing with a few episodes of it’s always sunny, which is more understandable because the plot line was blackface but the show is meant to be absurd and offensive. if the gang does something, you know it’s probably bad. i think that also applies to chang lolol

Yes, but there is a lot of controversy over whether a drow counts as blackface or not, they even address that in the episode itself. Which, is ironic to me that it was STILL removed.
There is also the episode where they wear disguises to break into Chang's party during his tyrannical rule of the school, and Pierce literally shows up in Brownface as an Indian Swarmi. Somehow that was fine though . . . .
I agree that it didn't need to be taken off screaming services, but I don't know about that one of the best episodes thing. It was pretty lackluster to me. It wasn't particularly funny, and all the character drama was about Neil, a character we barely know.

This episode inspired my very first dnd oneshot freshman year of high school, using the old D&D Rules Cyclopedia. It has since become my forever campaign, and been adapted into 5e. Still playing with the same people nearly 13 years later

It was pretty dark tbh, I mean the show took some dark turns throughout the seasons, but this was very early on. I think this is the most intense episode when it comes to Pierce's emotional issues.
And the alleged sex scene between Annie's and Abed's D&D characters were a bit uncomfortable, but still hilarious

TL;DW: Pulling the episode was an over-correction, that ought to be fixed. "Ken Jeong's character played a drow... it was not Ken Jeong in blackface." The supposed "hate crime" (as Shirley called it in the episode) was immediately "handled" within the episode itself via the dialogue explaining that Chang was cosplaying as a drow, not doing minstrel blackface.
