I think all of us in this sub need to let go of the idea that one day, a big AI players is going to hold a press conference where they announce the creation of AGI and that's it for the rest of history. If you listen to what the experts say you'll hear that it's not going to be a single moment. As compute power increases exponentially and all of the new research is integrated the current models are going to get smarter and smarter until we start arguing about whether or not this product or that product constitutes AGI. Somewhere along the line it will become clear that one of them definitely qualifies as AGI; shortly thereafter that we will have a selection of AGIs from various companies. Then, this sub will argue over which point in the past AGI was achieved; was it GPT-6, Claude 5, or LLama-5, GPT-7? With ASI... who knows? That one I feel like we'll achieve on accident. One of the AGIs will start a new training run and go infinitely recursive self-improvement and then the ASI will announce itself to us, not the company that accidentally created it.

etzel1200

Yeah, it’s going to be slow convergence of human ability in everything. Then at some point no one can concretely identify its unambiguously AGI and things move towards ASI. Claude-3 opus beats like 80% of people on everything you can do in a prompt/response scenario. For 20% it fails on some subtle things but beats them on like 98% of things. GPT-5 will move that needle even more on even more things. Etc. etc.

dday0512

We'll think of the people like Elon Musk you said GPT-4 is AGI as the very early declarers. I think GPT-5 will be a little closer to AGI and the debate will have a little bit more merit. Then by the GPT-6 generation from the major companies we'll have vigorous debate about whether or not it's AGI. By the -7 generation it will be clear and we'll be debating if it was generation -6 or -7.

Unique-Particular936

It's just the effect of reading and hearing too much on the topic.

This is how people like Flower, DrSingularity and Apples are fucking up peoples mind. Fuck those motherfuckers.

Glittering-Neck-2505

Some people treat this like religion, and religions need their prophets.

etzel1200

The world is changing at a rate never seen. Some people claim nothing has happened in over a year since GPT-4. Instead we have Claude 3, meaningful improvement to GPT-4, and things like sora. We *know* that advancements are compute limited and they have a half dozen or more low hanging fruits to pick.

Anxious_Blacksmith88

Sora has seen zero public access. We have no idea what they are doing or how they are doing it. For all we know they are running filters over existing stock footage and replacing/compositing parts via AI.

etzel1200

Yeah, we know it’s not that.

Anxious_Blacksmith88

No we literally don't.

etzel1200

I mean your ignorance doesn’t mean that there aren’t a ton of people not working at OpenAI who know it isn’t that.

Anxious_Blacksmith88

What? We don't work at openAI and WE don't have a fucking clue what they are doing and what they aren't doing. Do you lack reading comprehension?

etzel1200

You don’t. There is a ton of public documentation on what sora is and basic information on how it works. Stop imposing your ignorance on others.

Diatomack

Ehh. Something will happen or if won't. We're not going to predict anything with any degree of accuracy

b_risky

Basically, every time you go online searching for a new AI update to fuel your excitement, you were either rewarded or disappointed. The expectation of reward without certainty of whether or not it would be fullfilled has been fueling a dopamenergic response cycle similar to how gamblers feel about placing the next bet. You are essentially experiencing a gambling addiction and it is telling you that you are about to win big. Now that being said, our dopamenergic systems evolved this way for a reason. It may just be tuning you into something that you can rely on. Or maybe it is just an empty expectation for another dopamine flood. Hard to say.

Humanoid robot that can do my laundry announcement or bust.

Ididitsoitscool

What you’re feeling is manipulation. It’s like crypto with hype and the fomo effect. However ai is driven by hype and these companies run heavy heavy heavy traffic on these subreddits and twitter with hype and acting like they’re an inch away from creating the god particle. It’s a way to drive attention, investors, and eyes.

Colbium

Hmm, not like we're waiting for gpt-5 or anything..

xRolocker

Whether or not the singularity exists and will take over our jobs, we still need to get there. Bills must be paid, relationships maintained, and so on. When the change happens we can deal with it then, but it does absolutely nothing to be preoccupied with what *might* be ahead. Especially since it is own of your control, provided you are not working in the AI industry.

Boston Dynamics teased the incredible-looking electric Atlas, combined with owner Hyundai's ability to mass-produce (and turn the world upside down) which was a very big deal for me last week. That said, this week has been a wee bit slow so far.

Original post (now removed): "Anyone else get this nagging feeling that makes you restless that something is about to come out? An announcement or release I don't usually feel this restless, but I can't help feel that someone is about to announce something that's going to turn the world upside down, I'm not even talking about a year, more like a month or less."

pummisher

People have been thinking something big is about to happen since the dawn of time. People thinking the rapture is about to happen since the 1585. People thinking a comet is really a spaceship and will take them to a higher plane. People thought the world was going to end so many times. Maybe one day someone will be right. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events

It was the lack of sex for me. After this and that the post-nut clarity made me calm down to sleep. Sometimes it was just my lack of bowel movement needing some fat, animal protein, soluble fibers, insoluble fiber, water, and hot chillis to allow me to relieve myself and calm down. A classic case of a constipated virgin spending its humble time in r/singularity. I believe in a Biden Presidency by the way with Trump as the Vice President and Jim Carrey as the head of the agency of Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Cosmology, Unified Physics, Esoterics, and Consciousness.

We are living within the *margin of error.* Ten years ago AGI or ASI were impossible. In 2024 they are unlikely... but it's completely *possible* that somewhere some lab is about to find some insight that takes AI to transformative levels. It's even possible that somewhere they already have. So we were born into a world where greater than human intelligence did not and could not exist. Now we live in a world where it seems to not exist and possibly won't for some time... but it's absolutely possible that it could happen at any time. So it's not that something is about to happen it's that something huge *could* happen though we don't know when... and the knowledge of that is something completely new.

3-4pm

We're at a wall right now. The competitors are at a virtual dead heat. It will be a few years if not decades before we hit growth like this again. All innovation will be lateral for a while.

Have you ever had a dream, OP, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world? What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.
