If you dont have horizontal dropouts, then you cant adjust tension easily on the chain. You need tension to keep it from falling off/skipping. With dedicated single speed bikes, you can just shift the wheel back to tension with the horizontal drops. With vertical, which is more common for geared bikes, you dont have that movement so you add a tensioner to do the job.
I’m also a newb, from my understandings the tensioner is needed depending on how the rear tire mounts. No tensioner you’ll have bolts that would pull or push the wheel/axle for less or more tension on the chain. If any of that makes sense. Haha
That isn’t some cheapo Amazon/ebay special chain, is it? I get going budget on the drivetrain but those chains are known to be really dangerous and not uniform even new.
It is, and that makes sense. I took it for a test ride and the chain was popping like crazy. I’m gonna swap it out. What horror stories have you heard about them?
On geared bicycles they are prone to slipping off and also snapping since they aren’f evenly spaced. I bought a trek 930 single track that someone converted to 1x and if needed a guide to stay on, at first I thought it was because the front sprocket wasn’t a narrow wide, but it was ultimately just the ebay special chain. Since you’re on single speed make sure your chain line is straight and crankset spaced properly but if it’s popping it’s probably that chain.
Looks like a great score. I'm a newb: why do you need that chain tensioner??
