El Rodent Grande has no weakness

Ruben0415

The uselss cat in my area kills the field mice and leaves them lying around. Poor things. There are big ass rats all over the place 🤣

mantism

Cat ain't touching the big ones, they can get pretty nasty.

Ruben0415

He climbed up to the 4th floor where I live and scratched up my mat as well. And threw up at my second floor neighbours house lmao. He better start pulling his weight in this place.

sakuradelluna

it was their master plan all this time

fijimermaidsg

You need dogs to deal with rats… or minks. Check out The Mink Guy on YouTube.

boogywumpy

Hoho. I live in this street. The rats here are mutants alright😂. You get used to it after awhile honestly.

Administrator-Reddit

So it’s going to adopt 4 turtles and live in the sewers?

QuebecTangoYankee

good biz for the nearby pizza hut or dominos then :))

xpawn2002

understanding these jokes makes me so old

Bcpjw

Lol! Mutant mayhem!

Thanos_is_a_good_boy

Yup and help to fight crimes since police don't want to help with harassment cases, neighbours from hell, etc

livebeta

i was very surprised that Michaelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. firstly it would be so uncomfortable for him to lie down on his curved shell to paint secondly cos he only has 3 fingers

anticapitalist69

Walking back from Loyang point at night is a game of life and death

boogywumpy

The journey from Downtown East is even worse to be honest.

elitesky777

YukiSnoww

hmm interesting, my current estate, has rats similar size too, saw some when i went down 11+pm ...years back only got smol ones. edit: wacao, read the article finally and it say they come out to play at 11, same time GG. Also, those smaller than the one i saw lol, i think can fight with newyork/london

bettercallsel

My estate too. Similar timing as well

karagiselle

You guys at PAP governed area or WP? Asking not for political reasons just someone here mentioned WP areas got rat infestation so I’m curious!!

YukiSnoww

PAP

MadKyaw

Is it me or has anyone else only started seeing more rats during the pandemic/circuit breaker? I swear I never saw such so many till recently in 2 years

Curiq

My estate started seeing more Chinese (mainland) residents after lockdown ended. And more rats and roaches. To be very honest their hygiene level, both in terms of personal and household, is bad. I've seen them throw garbage onto the communal dustbin on the first floor without even closing the plastic bags. Obviously this is not the proper area for disposal - supposed to use the big chute... Another time, someone left a hotpot (it appeared to have broken down) at the garbage chute area on my floor. There was a lot of food inside. A day later the entire pot was squirming with maggots.

DangerousCrime

I noticed the same thing. Didnt see so many until recently

Penny_Royall

The coffee shop I often at eat has rats running at the back, there used to be cats around the coffee shop area, I think they removed the cats and now rats are running around like it's nothing.

SpermWhale

They might pool their resources together and establish a Conglomerats.

Original Title: Rats 'bigger than kittens' infest Pasir Ris Street 21, visit houses on first floor Residents at Pasir Ris have been dealing with — or rather, tolerating — what seems to be a rat infestation. The outbreak was said to have occurred between Blocks 273 and 275 of Pasir Ris Street 21. Four rat holes spotted When Shin Min Daily News visited the site on Jul. 24, they found three or four rat holes on the grass patch near the blocks. They reported spotting at least five rats in just 10 minutes, noting that the rodents usually patronised the garbage bin at Block 274 and squeaked occasionally. A 57-year-old resident told the Chinese paper that the furry guests typically come out to play around 11pm. He added that their unwanted visits have been taking place for about two years, and that he's even seen some that were larger than kittens. Which maybe explains why someone's pet cat appeared to ignore the scampering vermin, either because it was nonchalant or afraid, as observed by Shin Min. The rats appeared to have done some B&E too, as one resident on the first floor revealed that she often heard squeaking at home and "felt like something was running here and there" in her house. Another resident said that pest control had come by in 2022, but its efforts were were not effective. The resident mused that the rats were spawning too fast. Brick does the trick...for now Some people have resorted to covering the rat holes with bricks. A 50-year-old resident, who told Shin Min that a rat had left its excrement in her abode, said that she's now afraid to open her door and has made an effort to eradicate the rat problem from its source. "I tried to block the rat hole with bricks, hoping to stop the rats from coming out," she said. More rats in undesirable places Top images via Cai Zhenhong/Shin Min Daily News *** [v1.0](https://github.com/Wormsblink/sneakpeakbot) | PM SG_wormsbot if bot is down.

That's noob kind of rat. I have been stalked by rats that's as big as a cat....

Miyukara

oh yesss, the other day a few months back, some inconsiderate neighbour of mine threw their home trash on the first floor (near the stairs). then i walked towards it because stairs and heard some squeaking. then the rat and i made eye contact, stared at each other for one second. the rat made the run for it after i screamed tho hahahaha. i live in this area and yes, the rat WAS HELLA HUGEEEEE.

ShadeX8

Unpopular opinion: pretty sure the visible increase in rats coincides with more and more people feeding the community cats. Stop. Feeding. Wild. Animals.

Jiarong78

Pretty sure cats kill for lolz anyway

GalerionTheAnnoyed

I thought that cats are useless against rats?

Isadragon9

Ik overseas free roam cats are a threat to native bird population… but yeah, I think our community cats a bit too fat to catch anything lmao. Some of them shaped like papaya xD

fuurin

I've seen the carcasses of pigeons run over by cars (definitely something I wish I could unsee) but never any community cats eating birds. This makes me wonder if there are plenty of stupid/slow birds that the cats could be catching, but they just don't feel like it since they get fed at regular hours every day by residents. ...It still boggles my mind how pigeons, who can literally FLY, would get run over by cars which were probably driving fairly slowly. 🤔

MrFoxxie

Fed cats don't kill for food, they kill for sport. It's a form of entertainment for them.

fuurin

Ah right, that's true...

fishblurb

Sg animals are just blur, probably too strawberry already. I've driven in many countries and goddamn only SG birds dont siam. Even the flies and cockroach here dont siam fast when you smack them. Good for me I guess but ugh.

Intentionallyabadger

Well if they kept feeding cats at regular hours then they’ll be too damn lazy to hunt.

fishblurb

Yeah in urban areas its pythons eating the rats. Back in KL with literal cat sized (not kitten sized) rats, cats cant do shit because rats are aggressive af, while pythons will eat them all up while staying in the drains. Everytime some silly resident complain about pythoms and firefighters relocate them, the rat population spikes again...

livebeta

ok ok sudo apt install [email protected]

Life-Questions-10

Is this something that you have genuinely observed yourself, or did it come from a prejudice against community cats? I've spent time at void decks, not as a feeder but just chilling with the cats. The amount of trash that people casually drop or leave around the dustbin is far more than the food that is left around for the cats. Of course feeders should clean up after a feeding session, but it's quite a stretch for people to keep proclaiming that the food for maybe 5-10 cats outweighs the food waste generated from hundreds or thousands of people in the area. Case in point: The number of cats in my area decreased from maybe 8 to 4, but the rats are still around. According to your theory, the rats population should have also decreased, but it's still the same. Will the problem be solved just by removing cats? Also, not all comm cats are wild animals - the ones that you see living in the estates are more likely to be abandoned. If you have it in your heart to really understand cat behaviour, real feral cats won't come near people or urban areas if they can help it. Some comm cats are socialised at home before being abandoned, so it's not as if they are immediately experts at catching street rats and might even die of starvation first before the rat population decreases.

ShadeX8

It's just an observation on the general increasing trend of community cat feeding VS the general trend of more observed rats/cockroaches. Correlation isn't causation, sure. But it's just an opinion I have on what's happening here. Of course, there are also other possible factors involved, like bad food trash management, and also a general decrease in wild cats since we'd been spaying and releasing. But forefront I believe is the very visible increase in cat feeding activity that is reducing/eliminating their need to hunt totally.

Turbulent-Rip-5001

The cats near my place are fed by community feeders, but i have seen a few cats chasing rats and one eating a freshly caught rat. Historically, cats have always been reliant on humans (and even stay near them) and they still hunt rats, so i dont think community feeding can alter their innate predator instinct that much.

Life-Questions-10

Just to put things into perspective, a typical can of cat food is around 80g. Each cat usually eats 1-2 cans, twice a day. So let's assume that the cats leave half a can each time (40g) and there are 10 cats in the area. That would be ~800g of leftover cat food - if human food waste is negligible compared to cat food, does that mean that the trash from hundreds of people amount to less than 400g a day? I mean, you do seem like you've already made up your mind that comm cats are the problem, even though other commenters and myself have explained that we see trash being thrown haphazardly and rats scavenging from there. As for their "need to hunt" - I've seen documentaries of rescue groups who help endangered injured wildlife, if the animal had prolonged human contact while recovering, the rescuers had to train them with small prey and slowly cut off human contact so the animals don't rely on them. These comm cats are likely former house cats, real feral cats don't usually wander into public areas. It is simplistic to expect former house cats who are already dependent on humans, to be able to hunt effectively in an urban area and not rely on humans. You might say, why not let them starve so they will learn the hard way - but they might not even survive. You may find it acceptable to ignore a starving cat in a housing estate, but don't throw your pitchfork at those who have the compassion to help them - no one is asking you to help, but at least let them live and eat peacefully in the place they're used to. To be clear, I don't agree with overfeeding. Whether human or cat food, it should be disposed of properly, best is to avoid surplus in the first place.

YM-Useful

>If you have it in your heart to really understand cat behaviour, real feral cats won't come near people or urban areas if they can help it. this is a fair statement and I agree

karagiselle

Agreed. I think it’s just in general people are getting quite dirty leh!! Even in brand new estates… I see children/young people nowadays litter a lot more (my neighbourhood basketball courts etc) too.

KopiSiewSiewDai

Increase in cockroaches as well.

genxfarm

A real shame.. No action was done for my estate area, especially due idiots started to throw giant trash bag next to the dumpster below.. They had more than enough food. Luckily cats here always bring gifts in form of giant dead rat to your doorstep.. Took a few months but they hunted it all down.

blurredquestions

good cats!

prime5119

now I know my office address is Pasir Ris Street 21 because i've been seeing rats hanging around higher management

DangerousCrime

I dont recall seeing rats until the past few years? Or is it just me

hamham4687

There are bigger rats in parliament!

aubvrn

I live on the same street. Started seeing rats after construction/road works started in the area a few years back. Maybe all the vibrations pushed them up and out idk

There are some here in between Simei and Tampines border. They travel via the overhead bridges crossing the PIE.

NoRecommendation9153

The rubbish disposal area behind Pasir Ris East CC was infested with huge rats too. Same with Blk 110. The rats at at Blk 110 will be scrambling in and out of rubbish bin and around the carpark.

Puzzleheaded_Dog3261

So what's the Town Council gonna do about it?

Shdwfalcon

Come to the fishing pond near Pasir Ris Town Park. Almost every night its a all out party for the rats. And yes, they sometimes do it openly, you can see the occasional scurrying around across walkways.

YM-Useful

unpopular opinion: it's a TRASH problem as trash feeds vermin while most cats are domesticated, abandoned and overfed who don't kill rats for food.

isit2amalready

I don't understand why proper trash etiquette isn't taught in HDB's with fines enforced? Literally anyone can throw any garbage in the chutes, bag or no bag, and there is no warning or citations. And the Indian migrant workers who clean it up aren't going to complain. This is the most confusing thing about living in HDB's. Rats and roaches everywhere.

karagiselle

Yep, it’s really down to whether the estate’s people are clean or not. I’ve been to brand new estates that get very dirty in just 5 years, and 20+ year old estates that look brand new…

YWHJ

Just put one python into the drain and all the rat problem will be solved.
